I wasn't going to comment, but I have a duty here. Jide Macaulay is right to share his story, and stop people destroying their lives and others' lives when they know they are gay. It's very stupid to force gay men into marriage with women. Marriage is very hard to sustain even for straight couples who love each other, let alone for someone who enters into it to hide his nature. What of the social ills? Having children of doubtful paternity, the wife sexually and emotionally frustrated, the man frustrated into drunkenness, violence, depression, all sorts of problems. Let's get wise.If you did a bit of research, you'd find that gays are part of nature, that gays exist throughout the world of mammals. The earlier homophobic argument was that even animals didn't do it, so how could human beings? Now that a few minutes' 'googling' shows us it pervades the animal world, the argument becomes 'are we to emulate animals?' There is abundant medical evidence, from the gay gene to women's bodies femininzing the male embryo which is like a foreign quantity in her womb, to show us that being gay is a straighforward biological phenomenon. The Western world has faced up to this fact, but we refuse to. The Biblical arguments are too selective. What about eating shellfish, wearing poly-cotton fabrics, or even a girl not marrying as a virgin? These are all abominated in the Bible, but casually forgotten when we start 'It's a sin before the Lord' arguments. Those who hate on gays are on the same mental level as those who'd kill twins as being of the devil, whereas twin birth is perfectly rational biologically. Infact, there is a theory that the gay is a higher/more advanced creature than the straight man, and if you study the lives of the greatest, most creative men who ever lived, almost all of them showed a gay orientation. I leave you with this quote from D.H. Lawrence: 'Nearly every man who approaches greatness tends to homosexuality, whether he admits it or not...'

Speaking solely as a lover of literature, I think the comments about Anthills of the Savannah are wrong. It is not a trivial work. It did not win the Booker in 1987, but it was short-listed, not just long-listed for that most prestigious award for the novel form. A shortlist of six, from probably many hundreds of novels published that year throughout the Commonwealth? Far from marking a decline in Achebe's art, I think it was his most accomplished novel. There are different voices, there is literary sophistication, and Beatrice is in no way a lightweight or ephemeral creation. The charge of marginalised female characters can't be sustained about her. Anthills of the Savannah has layers, is witty and ironic. I recall the descriptions of the affected Englishness of Sam, the presentation of the sage of the northern tribe, the revolutionary mode of Ikem's speech at the University... I read that book years ago but scenes keep coming to mind. It is not a trival thriller.
As for the rest of Omatseye's comments, whether or not Achebe was great or merely good as a writer will continually be decided by his readers. The discussion tends to leave the realm of literary appreciation and become a tribal fray. If the Nobel were mine to award and I had to choose between Achebe and Soyinka, I would give it to Soyinka. That's just my humble literary judgment.

It cheers me up to read about Uti. He's entertaining, he is intelligent, he is pleasant. Who could do better over those marriage questions, the persistent prying into his private life to fuel rumours? His answers are clever. If Uti reads this, let me help him by saying that many great artists in history were either unmarried (like Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Gray, Walt Whitman), or married and living apart from the marital situation (like Shakespeare, Samuel Taylor Coleridge), or living in marriage, suicidal (like Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky). I don't know why you can't stand the ones who pretend to be straight. I think Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed for numerous sins, including inhospitality. Many women barren today are probably barren from inept abortions caused by sex with men. This Jason Collins has decided to be true to his nature. He could have married some innocent girl and had a sham marriage, become frustrated, had men in secret, become violent to his wife or a drunk or drug addict... Some commentators on my post yesterday did not engage with the issues raised but just got abusive. However, a few points. People don't choose to be albinos, twins, etc, and people don't choose to be gays. Someone said some gays changed and started to lead 'normal' lives. Debatable. Maybe they just suppressed sexual expression. Maybe they are bisexual. Maybe in marriage to women they became famously lazy/reluctant lovers. Maybe many married men called impotent in our traditional communities were gays who didn't know how to fulfil and express themselves. I repeat that many worthy developements in the past came, not from majority wisdom but the initiative of inspired individuals. Only Uti and the good Lord know whether he is straight or gay or bi or asexual. I sympathise very much with him. I only pray he doesn't get into a sham marriage just to silence gossips. If people who are straight and crazy about each other find it hard to make their marriages work, someone who marries just to stop gossip has no chance. Two lives will be messed up.
