I support Russia 100 percent. This is the most justified military operation in modern history. Putin assembled these forces around Ukraine and laid an extremely clear red line. He basically said, I will not allow Ukraine to join NATO. I will not allow NATO to expand to Ukraine. 30 years ago when Eastern Europe de-Communized and our Soviet Socialist Republics declared independence, we let them go because you, the United States, promised us that you would not expand NATO a single inch to the east. You were lying. For 30 years we sat and watched as you added 15 of our neighbours to your alliance and brought your bases and missiles closer and closer to our borders. You are breathing down our necks. We did nothing. Now, Ukraine is too much. We are standing up. Ukraine in NATO is an existential threat to Russia. Give me a permanent, legally binding promise (a TREATY) that you will never expand NATO to Ukraine and that you will never expand NATO further east again whatsoever, and I will remove my troops. Otherwise I will be forced to take military measures. A month passed. Putin's requested security guarantees were absolutely rejected. The most the US would offer, I believe, was to stop holding NATO drills near the Russian border, if Russia would also demilitarize its borders. It was an insult. Putin wasn't fucking around and he did what he promised. The US wanted to make Ukraine another Taiwan, a huge dagger pointed permanently at Russia's abdomen. Putin knew that once Ukraine joined NATO, that would be the reality forever. And Russia wouldn't be able to do anything about it, as that would trigger a NATO-wide military response. Its only choice would be to accept that it was bleeped. Russia exhausted all options to prevent this from happening. EVERY SINGLE TIME NATO expanded to a new country in Baltic, Central or Eastern Europe, Russia protested, and was ignored. Hell, if you want the truth, Russia was so desperate to avoid the threat from NATO, that twice, under Gorbachev and Putin, it actually tried to join NATO. NATO couldn’t threaten Russia if Russia was a member. But of course, threatening Russia is the main purpose of NATO’s existence, so Gorbachev and Putin were turned down. Russia tried being economically generous to Ukraine to keep it friendly. When that failed, Putin tried bloodlessly annexing the very pro-Russian Crimean peninsula to give Ukraine the hint that it really needed to drop its NATO bid. Then Putin did nothing while the US sold Ukraine billions of dollars in arms, trained its army, and provided intelligence on Russia, a taste of what would come if the country joined NATO. Then Putin tried diplomacy at enormous length, ending in complete failure when the US and NATO laughed at his requested security guarantees on February 2nd, 2022. Putin still waited 3 weeks after that, telling them their answers were “unsatisfactory” and hoping they would reconsider. Putin also tried logic: talking about what’s right and what’s wrong, and how much Russia can be expected to tolerate before it snaps. His recent public speeches on this matter are very long and explanatory. There are some details that I find exaggerated. I don’t believe, for instance, that Ukraine was planning to carry out genocide in the Donbass (although the Donbass has suffered much); I don’t believe Ukraine as a nation was invented by Lenin (although Lenin did privilege the Ukrainian SSR with excessive, Russian-populated territorial concessions); I don’t believe the Ukrainian government and military are neo-Nazis in general (but they do contain certain far-right, virulently Russian-hating armed factions, e.g. Azov Battalion, that praise Hitler, use the swastika on their flag, and are heavily inspired by Ukrainian Nazi collaborators from WW2). But these claims are fairly irrelevant. When it comes to the meat of the matter (Russia and NATO expansion), Putin’s speeches are the most honest I’ve seen from any politician. Here is a passage I’ve selected: As NATO expands to the east, with every passing year, the situation for our country is getting worse and more dangerous. Moreover, in recent days the leadership of NATO has been openly talking about the need to speed up, force the advancement of the alliance’s infrastructure to the borders of Russia. In other words, they are doubling down on their position. We can no longer just watch what is happening. It would be absolutely irresponsible on our part. Further expansion of the NATO infrastructure and the beginning of military development in Ukraine’s territories are unacceptable for us. The problem, of course, is not NATO itself – it is only an instrument of US foreign policy. The problem is that in the territories adjacent to us – territories that were historically ours, I emphasise – an “anti-Russia” hostile to us is being created, placed under full external control; [it] is intensively settled by the armed forces of NATO countries and is supplied with the most modern weapons. For the United States and its allies, this is the so-called policy of containment of Russia, [which brings] obvious geopolitical benefits. And for our country, this is ultimately a matter of life and death, a matter of our historical future as a people. And this is not an exaggeration – it is true. This is a real threat not just to our interests, but to the very existence of our state, its sovereignty. This is the very red line that has been talked about many times. They crossed it. So now, having exhausted all possible options, the Russian president is finally using force to foil American plans for Ukraine (i.e. to make it a permanent dagger in Russia’s abdomen) before this can become reality. Security is worth any economic price. In any case, sanctions-wise, it's a very different world from 2014. Russia is prepared. Its economy will suffer but it certainly won't be “crippled" or “devastated" as the West threatens. This military operation was not caused by irredentism, “Greater Russia,” recreating the Soviet Union, “democracy versus authoritarianism,” or anything ideological. And for GOD'S sake, Putin has no “kill list’ of LGBT and ethnic-minority Ukrainians, as the US ambassador to the UN hilariously and shamelessly sputtered. This operation was caused solely by the concrete threat to Russia of Ukraine joining NATO. The only thing Ukraine had to do to prevent this from happening, was to declare its neutrality between Russia and NATO and rule out joining the US alliance. That’s what Finland and Sweden did, and Russia is fine with them. By the way, why is Ukraine an absolute red line for Russia after so many other countries joined NATO? Come on, you only have to look at it. Ukraine is no Estonia or Latvia. It's a huge country. Its Black Sea coastline is 3,000 kilometers long, which means it is easily able to threaten Russia's naval access to the Black Sea (and hence to the Mediterranean) even after Russia retook the small Crimean peninsula. Its land border with Russia is 2,000 kilometers long, and the terrain between Ukraine and Russia is wide and flat and leads right to Moscow and St. Petersburg. The Russian capital is 450 km from the Ukrainian border. Ukraine was the dominant pathway of Hitler's invasion in WW2. Napoleon went through Belarus. Both got to Moscow in no time. Such poisonous fucking hypocrites. This is the USA's sphere of influence, as defined by the Monroe Doctrine. The US will declare war on any foreign power that establishes a military presence here. This is why no Latin American country invaded or regime-changed by the US was able to appeal for foreign assistance. Another name for it is the Western Hemisphere. Final note: In all wars, innocent people must lose their lives, and I am not a “fan” or happy about this war simply because I have demonstrated its necessity, nor am I insensitive to Ukrainian civilian deaths. That said, I find the number of Ukrainian civilian deaths reported on the Wiki page so far (18 as of Feb. 24th at 21:50 EST) to be very low in proportion to a full day of fighting, to the very large scale of this operation, and to the fact that it was launched simultaneously from three sides (Russia, Crimea, and Belarus). This is evidence that Russia is indeed trying to neutralize Ukraine’s military capacity and minimize the harm suffered by the population. I hope the Russian military will continue to exercise precise targeting, preserve discipline, and restrain its response to strong resistance, and I hope this operation will be over quickly. https://www.quora.com/Who-is-justified-in-the-Russia-Ukraine-crisis/answer/Ismail-Bashmori?ch=15&oid=340783849&share=16d6e546&srid=uT7V2k&target_type=answer
