This is because President Bola Tinubu dissolved the board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) with a single statement less than a month after he became president in 2023.

NMCN is the statutory body responsible for nursing education, certification, licensing and regulation in Nigeria. It is a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education, and it is headed by a board chairman, supported by board members who are appointed by the president.

Since the dissolution, the council has had no board chairman who could sign certificates of qualified nurses and midwives.

Abiodun Grace* graduated from the School of Nursing in Osogbo, Osun State, in 2023. She also has not been issued her certificate.

“My school authorities are aware of this problem, but they said it is beyond them. While I have not been pressured to present my certificate at the private hospital where I work, many of my friends don’t even have a place to work because all the opportunities they have seen required them to submit a certificate,” Grace told FIJ on Tuesday.

“I know a colleague who applied for a role in a state hospital but missed out due to the unavailability of her certificate.

“We don’t know the truth about what is delaying the issuance of our certificates. Two other sets of nurses have graduated from my alma mater since 2023, and they have joined the pool of yet-to-be-certified health professionals.”

When Samson Adams*, another affected nurse, left the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) in 2023, he hoped to quickly kickstart his career locally or in a foreign country.
