The senate yesterday proceeded on six weeks recess without debating any bill, more than two months after the 8th Senate was inaugurated.
The recess was unanimously agreed upon by the senators at the end of yesterday’s plenary chaired by the Senate President Bukola Saraki.
With this recess, the senators have gone on recess four times so far. They are to resume on September 29, this year.
From June 9th when the eighth Assembly was inaugurated, the lawmakers have spent about six weeks holidaying.
Our correspondent reports that so far, they have only sat for 15 days since their inauguration.
It was observed that since the commencement of the 8th Senate, no bill has been debated unlike what was obtainable during the 7th senate.
Although about 20 bills were presented for first reading they have not been debated. But in an interview yesterday, senate leader Ali Ndume said the recess was normal and annual holiday.
“This has been the tradition, in fact it used to be eight weeks but now we are going on six weeks and if there is anything we will come back,” he said.
The House of Representatives also went for a six weeks holiday yesterday. They will reconvene on September 29.
House spokesperson Sani Zorro said the recess was part of their legislative calendar and that they have exhausted all that they had for this period. Source: http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/news/senators-reps-begin-another-6-week-holiday/106382.html |

The Senate on Thursday approved the request of President Muhammadu Buhari for a $75m World Bank loan for Edo State.
The Senate gave the approval after considering the report of the Senator Kabiru Gaya-led ad-hoc committee which worked on the loan request. Efforts by the Peoples Democratic Party member representing Edo South, Senator Mathew Urhoghide, to make the Senate reject the request did not succeed.

President Muhammadu Buhari said unsuitable qualifications limit the employment prospects and potential of the Nigerian youth to contribute to national development.
The president spoke at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday on the occasion of the 2015 International Youth Day celebrations.
He said “although education attainment by the Nigerian youth has increased significantly in the last decade, the relevance of curricula, quality of education and the fit with skills required by the job market still remains a challenge for the country. Unsuitable qualifications limit our young peoples’ employment prospects and potential to contribute to national development.”
The president said the youth had written their names in history and would be remembered as true heroes of the country’s democracy and architects of change.
“The role you played, individually and collectively, in not only being peaceful members of the electorate but also galvanising the social media platform and mobilising your peers to make the right choice,” he said.
