As a matter of fact if someone will really learn and acquire knowledge and relevant experiences in piggery, it is quite better to start with crossed or pregnant sows or such an individual mate the gilts personally.

A new farmer will learn the behavior of the animals while pregnant and at delivery period.

Also, he can also benefit from knowing how to take care of piglets and weaners and their behaviors.
There's nothing like starting from the beginning because such an individual will really have bulk of experience in a short while which will make him succeed.
It is imperative to know that in piggery, "the more the experience, the more the success rate and stories".

anyway I agree with but to be successful in this biz your foundational stock matter most some 1 might sell a year old gilt for u as ingilt but u won't no,such animals won't pass breeding test cos it a slow growing animal,how many farmer among us do buy a special boar to cross the offspring of there sow? I believe pregnant animals n nursing mothers are d most delicate part in pig farming so if u feel that d best way for an intending farmer to start then I rest my case,if is that easy why did he need to put them incare of his fwend? If they farrow 10 n he claim it 5 or still birth who will u hold responsible?

Most people here no me as a laptop farmer,but want to announce to you am now a full pig farmer like u,most pipu tag me as a breed promoter,but some pipu from this group are able to chat with me n get some animals thru farmers that I no that have good breeds anyway I started Dec last year and I will soon flaunt some of the pics of my stock,so u Will no I also practice what I preach feel free to ask me what u feel to no about piggery here on this group so other pipu can benefit

@ FashPet thank you for the insight. I have decided to keep the sows with the friend selling them to me till they farrow, since he has the experience already. I will cater for the feeding and the other logistics. We have benefitted a lot from the contributions here.

I love your decision and am not here to discourage u,getting a weaner is sumhw best for those new farmers so u can grow with it, advantage of using weaners,when buying weaners u will be priviledge to see there parents stocks which is the best,u will be able to select the best piglet which are the shooters for breeding purpose, but most of us want to start harvesting on time,disadvantage of ingilt,some farmer tends to use the boar that mount the sow that gave birth to your ingilt,they don't wait for the appropriate weight b4 crossing,and most time the ingilt are left over of a litter were most farmers has sold d shooters among it,so my advice to you is to choose your breeder stock from the offspring the gilt will farrow,but we still have so many breeders that sell good breeding ingilt animal for u,just no it won't come cheap,anyway av miss this group sha,cos this was the 1st group that brush my knowledge on pig farming so feel free to ask what u wish to no about piggery

I dont know any pig farmer who doesnt make use of soyabeans, maize and pkc in his compounded feed and who doesnt supplement with brewery waste and cassava peels to make up for the necessary daily feed weight intake of his animals

in piggery almost everything is possible garbage in garbage out,PKc is never a complete diet for pigs the usage shouldn't exceed 30% cos it contain high fiber as well,so is beta we should feeds our pigs different varieties of feed cos time is money

u buy pregnancy kit,or beta still after mating your gilt or sow keep the record on the day the boar mount the sow,after 19days start checking If the sow or gilt will come on heat or not

I hope someone can answer a few questions.

What is the most common breed farmed in Nigeria in intensive settings and why?
Where do Nigerians source their stock from and how easy is it to import pig stock into the country.
It seems to me most people expect their pigs to be about 70-80 kg by the time they arrive at market but in Europe it could be double this. Is this an issue of breed or practice and why can't we farm these higher yield breeds

I hope my questions are not too many

we have so many hybrids n crossbreed,the most common ones are largewhite,we have landrace duroc n hermshire and we have this our native breeds as well,or crossbreed as well we also have gene converters n PIC they are the most improved breeds in naija,we have big companies that do import exotic breeds from different countries to naija,like Obj farm Casia farm and the rest, why we don't get much high FCR is becos we don't give them the right feeds n we like cutting corners alot,how many farmers can afford to feed his or her pigs soya and maize? Most farm always want to make atleast 25% or more on each pigs,unlike the white they settle down for 15% profit on each pigs,cos in pig farming feed n maintainance gup upto 85% of your total profits,reason y farmers don't farm this improve breeds are lack of awareness and it expensive,but at the long runz it save time and money,cos they have good FCR(feed convert ratio Is high)it easy but you ask yourself reason y you want to import with the high exchange rate,will I able to make my money back,do I want to venture into AI,is there farms that sells the kind of breeds I want to import to naija already,can I get other breeds that have same quality or characteristics of the breed I want to import in naija at cheaper price here in naija,do I want to be a breeder selling premium weaners,or a breeder selling fattening weaners,this are the questions u ask yourself

it take 6 to 7month from birth to gain average of 60 to 100kg but it all about breed feed and management just try and get trained anything u don't understand then come here n post it

it depend on the loacation n farmer you are getting it from so no fixed price so far you av visited so many farm you can ask from diff places make sure it a good breeds that the koko,tips to no if they are good breeds,check how big the boar is,and check how big there sow is that how you will determine

I belief if u av done the necessary training like u said u shld able to decide, hope the 300k excluding there housing? Just buy like 5 to 10 female weaners or grower n a male,make sure they are LW that might cost u 100k then use 200k to feed n do other tinz,buy bulk feeds,then within 4 months I expect u to add more to your capital cos once they start farrowing ur xpenses will increase
