Inspectahdeck: Let me help you answer some of your questions
3m is very good to start a piggery business (starting small o).
1) oke aro is a good place to start. You can rent a whole pen, half or rooms. I think a room goes for 2,800 - 4000 depending on the size.
2) breeds matters a lot. You can't start and sell every month with you capacity (finance and housing) you can sell every 3month if you plan well. You can start with weaners (foreign) which goes for 20,000 and some growers (foreign) which goes for 30,000. This will enable you sell at 3months interval. Also you need about to cross (foreign) I think it goes for 75,000-80,000. This will help you produce your own and aid your 3months interval without buying any pig after the first purchase.
3) feeding depends on the number of pigs you buy from the price list above. Also feeding as too much analysis you can get a nutritionist to help you. Basically, you need spent grains and concentrate.
4) as a starter yes you need a vet. When you start you will be told by the vet drugs to us and the prices.
5) you asked too much questions you don't need at the moment. It is good to think of expansion but I think it is advisable to start, learn and adapt before thinking of expansion. Some people step aside after 3month in the business. So be careful.
Finally piggery isn't bean. Be prepared for the business and rearing.
quote author=Tolyna04 post=49906292]House please I need some sound advice. This is my situation. I got a 3m naira grant to do piggery. I'm a programmer currently working at Yaba with some flexibility in time.I live at Allen, Ikeja. I'm starting from zero, I don't have any farm land anywhere or experience raising pigs. I just want to invest the money on pigs.
1. where and how do I find a pig farm to rent? and what location in Lagos would be suited for such activities. How much should I budget for this? 2. If My goal is to be able to sell pigs monthly, how many weaner pigs should I start with per month and where do I get the weaners from and at what costs? as a starter how much should be budgeted for this? which breeds would you advice I go for with reasonable costs 3. How much should be budgeted on feeding and what type of feed combination is good for maximum yield of the pigs for fattening 4. Would I require the services of a Vet and what drugs and vaccines would the pigs need during their production cycle? how much on this 5. If after some cycles, I want to move to a permanent site, what location is advised to buy land and build a pen in? nice advice just that with that capital he shld able to build his own pen, very difficult to expand most farmers in oke aro do over stock cos lack of space or high cost of renting pen,u can't even plant like moringa or pawpaw to feed ur pigs, people with low budget can rent full or half pen at oke aro,but with 3m u shld able to own ur own farm, then go into it fully within 2years u will start smiling to d bank, but your parent stock matter most, most pipu start with concoction breeds, they find it hard to record any profit cos there feed convertion rate is low |

Looking forward to your response. there is sense in it but u no say piggery biz require capital n numbers, let assuming after 5month u make just 150k as profit den divide it by 5 months u only earn 30k per month so u ask urself does it worth the stress let assuming u are making 6k profit on each pigs, just imagine how many pigs u need to feed b4 u make more profit, and again u might av challenges of buying good weaners,so venture into it wen u av enough capital,or start small by breeding n u source for there feeds n expand gradually but note u won't make any income in your 1st year |

If after some cycles, I want to move to a permanent site, what location is advised to buy land and build a pen in? with the amount of money involve you are good to go,1st u need to lease a pen cos piggery biz deal with a lot of patience, renting few rooms might not help ur budget or capital,2ndly u don't need xpensive breeds to kick start, just get normal large white breeds which is rugged n they convert easily, start with let say 20 female weaner, then buy 1 or 2 exotic male boar, then buy 20males for fattening purpose, largewhite breed might cost u Ntin less than 8k for good breeds It depend on the farm u buy them from sum1 told me he recently buy 6k from a farm,so it depend on location,3rdly b4 u site a company It must be near raw material,so find n choose a location were u can source for cheap materials to feed ,why I don't like oke aro cost of pen expensive,u might have problem of expanding,u don't get any free or cheap materials except u buy, then they charge u 20naira on each kilo u sell, but with ur money u can get a farm land n build a pen worth 2m then spend 1m of pigs n feeding,u can start with just 20breeders only if u own ur pen,but wen renting a pen u start fattening as well, piggery don't require much medication, with that money I expect u to manage d biz urself, the most important thing is go for training n u must be patient n have passion for it,so get train n make research of were to site ur pig farm, once u get trained u shld able to no the right n cheap source of feed to use for ur pigs,sum1 in lag might be using gala waste, but sum1 in ibadan might not have access to it,so ur location will determine what u will use,y I said u don't need foreign or exotic is because u are producing for slaughter purpose but don't go n buy runt ooo,so get train 1st,the exotic male will improve there offspring |

Jadet: Hello All on "Pig Farmers Let us Meet Here" Post, I have learnt some essential and critical piggery farming tips on this post thread. I am writing a piggery business proposal and I have to make the investment come true. I have asked 4 piggery farmers with varying years of piggery business and received loads of information,I have also done reviews using online sources within and outside Nigeria. However, none has hit the nail on the head on the vast differences between the use of Exotic/Pure breed/Imported breeds over the commonly available breeds in Nigeria, I got this information on a single thread post on this forum. In summary, what I have learnt now are : Besides the capital cost of pens, borehole, power source and fencing, the primary purpose of the business should guide the choice of breed to use. If venture is for breeding purpose, the better option is to use the pure breed especially *camborough* because of its feed conversion ratio, litter size and attainable weight of piglets farrowed within a 4-month period that is greater than what is obtained in the local breeds. Although, there is no price differenciation in the kilogram price for pure or local breeds, the difference lies in the reduction of feed cost, halved market size wait time and income that can be derived from selling piglets of farrowed. Boars from breeding lines can be used for fattening while the females can be sold off at all stages of a pig's life and some chosen to continue breeding . I have also observed that the cost of feed is a major part of the operational expense. Please can anyone verify if the prices below holds true : 1. Palm Kernel Cake @ N32/kg 2. Corn @ N130/kg 3. Cassava waste @ N200/15kg - 20kg bag 4. Noodles waste @N120/kg 5. Dried Blood meal @ N120/kg 6. Bone meal @ N400/kg 7. Bread waste @ N200/kg 8. Brewery wet waste @ N70,000 -N100,000/ 15 tonnes 9. Vitamin premix @ N1100/0.500gm 10. Industrial salt @ N500 [b] However, please what is the farm price for the following pigs : 1. Camborough about-to-cross 2. Camborough weaners 3. Camborough growers 4. Camborough boars 5. Cost of artificial insemination per sow
Where can the Camborough breed be purchased whatsap me let me give u a contact were u can purchase full breed, cos that the only breeds they have on there farm |

BYSilver: thank you very much, pls any particular breed I need to consider or all female pigs are good in breeding in piggery u must have good combination of good breeds feeding n management, dont start your farm with concoction breeds, they might be good mothers but slow growth, just go for Largewhite or Landrace, for the boar you can get duroc or LW or Landrace, please select your breeder stock carefully cos they are not slaughter pigs, you need to select the shooters. Assuming u want to start with weaners,so u will be able to see there parent b4 buying it might be expensive but it pays @ the long run |

SinaAkinsanya: You can go see some of the exotic breeds (Large white, Landrace, Duroc and gene converter) kept by Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IART) in Ikenne. It is federal Government Institution established to help farmers. The Ikenne site is devoted for swine research and to assist swine farmers. They imported what they regard as grand parent stock about 5 years ago. I have seen only the males of all the breeds i mentioned above. They are very very impressive animals. I understand that they have animals for sale now. One of their officers that we deal with is Momoh. His number is 0803 383 1083. They are public officers, so i have no qualms in providing his info on this forum as they are there to assist swine farmers. The key is that if you buy from them, they have verifiable history and i want to believe that one will be buying from a trusted source. They challenge is the cost of their weaners. I think N70,000 is too much and damn cracy given the financial resources of most farmers. Anyhow, from my about 2 year expereince in this business, i must say again that most of the animals being circulated amongst us have been bastardised over the years. By that, i mean they and their parents have not been properly fed over time , in-breeding, poor medication etc. Those are the things that tend to reduce the quality of the animals over time. In other words, no matter what you do with most of them now, you cannot achieve say 90-100 kg is even 6 months. In my view, it should not really matter, whether one is buying LW, Camborough, Landrace or Duroc as any of those animals have very good feed conversion ratio, quickly grow large and farrow quality animals in large numbers. What matters is that you are really buying what you think you are buying (good genetics and the seller is honest and can show and demonstrate records. I rili like your writeup, that the reason why we have breeder's farms, were they strictly sell exotic breeds with good genetics, they can afford to buy there parent stock any amount cos they no they will make there money within that same year, but most people prefer or selecting there breeders from a slaughter pigs, and expect the offspring from such pigs to attain 80kg in 7months I doubt, that more reason why am preaching,we should inject exotic breeds to our farm if you can just get the boar alone it good, but if you can both get male n female that just the best,it might be expensive but I bet u,you will surely make your money back once they farrow, they eat less and convert high,i saw large number of pigs In a farm I ask there age the man told me close to 5months,just saw 3 shooters which are just 30kg some are 5kg but average of 15kg,so tell me how many months with it take such pigs to attain 60kg? Most annoying part some farmers will still select there breeders from such growers,Is high time we farmers should start doing it right,if some of the farmers keep records they will will no they are running at a loss, how many farmers can pay himself 100k monthly from his pig farm and still record profit? While some just litters from 1sow his paying his salary n workers, am telling you if you have good breeds in your farm you won't sell 1 weaners less dan 10k,while some are still selling for 3500 bro like I said I love your writeup needs more people like you on this platform |

moniyitan: You are right about cutting cost as when it comes to farming, it makes a big difference if the finance is there to do it the right way. Another question that comes to mind is since maize and soya could make a big difference in their feed, can the farmers not plant it since the price is not affordable on the open market. most farmer will decide to plant and sell in open market n use the money to buy alternative feed for there pigs, but u shld no that no matter how u feed a cockrel or local chicken broiler mash they can't attain a broiler weight,so we really need a good breed feeds n management, please let start doing it right so we can get a good result,if is even largewhite we can afford let get it,the get a superior breeds to mount them, and please u must be an experienced farmer b4 getting exotic breeds, cos there disease resistance is low compare to LW LR or Camb most people with exotic breeds are breeders,so if u don't have good management just settle down with LW they are rugged n convert easily,or use a good boar to cross your high performing local breed, sows that don't weigh beyond 50kg even after farrowing like twice pls send it to slaughter house, under performing sows please clear them out, stop counting the quantity of ur pigs count quality |

moniyitan: This question applies to all the gurus in the house, based on research a pig should reach min 100kg in 5 months but we don't seem to get that in Nigeria. 80kg in 7 months is not acceptable because it means more time spent and money . What are we doing wrong and how can we improve or do we have farmers who achieve 100kg in 5 months . If we do please share with us the secret. if any farmer can even get 80kg in 7months they will be happy, how many farmer can buy 40k weaners as there breeders, how many farmer are using nipple drinker, how many farmers can use maize n soya xcept using a bi-product,if we can adjust and do this u can achieve it,a lady has a 7months boar that weigh 185kg,imported from UK wen it was a weaner, but we can't pay the price n u xpect 100kg in 5months,we still av a longway to go,now camborough Dat can even improve our breeds, how many farmer can afford it as there breeding stock both male n female? |

Inspectahdeck: It depends on the volume
Feeds you might need less depending on volume. Per month Let's say 24k for a tonne of Pkc Spent grains double tipper 50-60k Compounded 25-40k
Salary per month Attendant 10-20k Vet 5-10k
Drug per month 5-20k might be high depending on epidemic etc.
I gave you the prices of pigs earlier
If you have roughly 500k- 1m. Everything depends on the volume of pigs hmmm with this your quotation, am expecting you to work on his budget, but your quotation na for commercial purpose ,but can u try work on just 2 to 5breeders,and mind u he might not rili need farm hands 4nw,like I said he shld get train for now he might not need Vet or spend much on drugs except deworming n multivitamins, hoping to hear from u |
