Immediately that was achieved Russia pulled out of Kyiv. Now do you see how Ukrainian normal soldiers are being destroyed in all fronts. Azov battalion was the back bone of Ukraine troops. My husband did die in Ukraine," Brittany Cancel, the widow of the 22-year-old Marine veteran, told Fox News Digital. "He went there wanting to help people, he had always felt that that was his main mission in life."

Cancel leaves behind his wife and a 7-month-old son. He appears to be the first U.S. citizen to die while fighting alongside Ukrainians in Ukraine.

My husband was very brave and a hero," Cancel said. "I did not expect to be a widow at 23 years old or for our son to be without a father. All I want is for him to come home, and to give him the proper burial he deserves."

The Marine veteran signed up to work for a private military contracting company on top of his full-time job as a corrections officer shortly before the war in Ukraine broke out at the end of February, Willy Cancel's mother, Rebecca Cabrera, told CNN. After the war began, the company asked for contractors to fight in Ukraine and Cancel agreed to go, the mother said. Cabrera did not respond to Fox News' request for comment.

[b]Lend-lease isn’t free, and generations of Ukrainians are going to pay for the weapons that’ll be supplied by Washington to Kiev under the program, Vyacheslav Volodin, Russian State Duma speaker, has said.

On Thursday, the US House of Representatives approved the “Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act,” which makes it easier for Washington to send weapons to Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia. However, those deliveries are conditioned on Kiev having to pay for the “return of and reimbursement and repayment for defense articles loaned or leased.” The lend-lease bill, which now only needs Joe Biden’s signature, is separate from the White House’s ongoing efforts to arm the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with weapons from the Pentagon’s stockpiles.


Washington’s motives are crystal clear,” Volodin wrote on Telegram, suggesting that lend-leasing to Ukraine “would allow to increase the profits of American defense corporations by several times.”

The parliament speaker recalled the events of World War II when the Soviet Union had received military hardware from the US under a similar lend-lease scheme.

“It was described as help from the allies,” but the USSR, which lost 27 million lives fighting the Nazis, had to return those debts for decades, among other things, sending its platinum, gold and timber to America as part of mutual settlements, he said.

“The payments were only completed 61 years after the Great Victory, in 2006,” Volodin pointed out.

Lend-lease is basically a commodity loan, and “not a cheap one,” he warned. “Many future generations of Ukrainian citizens are going to pay” for the weapons, ammo and food supplies delivered by Washington


By agreeing to the land-lease scheme, “Zelensky is leading the country into a debt pit,” the parliament speaker insisted

Rockets hit Kyiv during the UN Secretary General's visit to the city, in which he criticised his own organisation's Security Council.

Antonio Guterres said the council had failed to prevent or end the war in Ukraine.

This was "a source of great disappointment, frustration and anger," he said. "Let me be very clear: [it] failed to do everything in its power to prevent and end this war," he added.

The 15-member UN Security Council is specifically tasked with ensuring global peace and security.

But it has faced criticism, including from Ukraine's government, for failing to act since the invasion began in February.

Russia is one of five permanent members of the body and it has vetoed more than one resolution on the conflict.

Mr Guterres was speaking on Thursday evening at a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has previously criticised the Security Council.

"I am here to say to you Mr President, and to the people of Ukraine, we will not give up," he said.

But Mr Guterres also defended his organisation, admitting that while the Security Council had been "paralysed" the UN was taking other actions.

"The UN is the 1,400 staff members in Ukraine who are working to provide assistance, food, cash [and] other forms of support," he told the BBC.

Gas distributors in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia reportedly plan to open ruble accounts


Some of Europe’s largest energy firms are planning to use a new payment system for Russian gas supplies demanded by the Kremlin, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

Sources told the newspaper that gas distributors in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia aim to open ruble accounts at Gazprombank in Switzerland. They said that negotiations between European buyers and Russian gas supplier Gazprom have intensified as payment deadlines approach.

Under the new mechanism, European companies would continue to pay Gazprombank for their imports in euro in order not to breach the sanctions regime. The Russian bank, which is not under EU sanctions, would then, at their request, convert euro-denominated deposits into rubles in a second account opened in their name, for onward payment to the Russian gas provider.

“We consider that the amendment of the payment process complies with the sanctions law and so the payments are possible,” said chief financial officer of Germany’s Uniper Tiina Tuomela.


Austria’s OMV also announced it had analyzed the Gazprom request on payment methods in light of the EU sanctions and was working on a solution. According to Bloomberg, on Wednesday the Austrian firm denied that it plans to open an account in Switzerland to pay for Russian gas supply. Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer earlier described as fake news the reports about the nation’s shift to payment for gas in rubles.

FT’s sources said that Gazprom’s other large customer, Italy’s Eni, is evaluating its options. The company has until the end of May, when its next payment for Russian supplies is due.

Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded that ‘unfriendly’ countries pay for Russian gas in rubles. He has also warned that failure to comply with the currency switch would mean that affected countries risked losing Russian gas supplies.

On Wednesday, Gazprom said it had completely halted gas flows to Bulgaria and Poland after the two countries failed to pay for April supplies in the Russian currency.

Reverse flows from Germany ramped up after direct supplies were halted, the energy major says


Poland continues to buy Russian natural gas from Germany via reverse flows, after its direct supplies were suspended due to non-payment in rubles, Russia’s energy giant Gazprom said on Thursday.

“This week Poland refused to pay for the Russian gas with the new terms, in rubles. It was grandly announced that they no longer needed Russian gas and would not buy it any more. But in fact Poland keeps buying Russian gas after the direct supply was halted. It now buys the gas from Germany, and it comes back to Poland with the reverse flow via the Yamal-Europe pipeline,” Gazprom's official representative Sergey Kupriyanov said.

On Wednesday, Gazprom announced a complete halt of gas exports to Poland as Warsaw had failed to pay for its fuel in rubles in line with a new payment mechanism launched earlier this month. According to Gazprom, supplies will not resume until Warsaw complies with the new terms. Deliveries to Bulgaria were also halted, for the same reason.

Poland raised its bid for reverse gas supplies from Germany fivefold on Wednesday, data from the German operator of the gas transmission network Gascade showed.

A month ago, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said his country will ban all imports of Russian gas, oil and coal by the end of the year. His position was reiterated on Wednesday by Polish Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure Piotr Naimski, who said that Warsaw did not intend to buy gas from Russian companies any more.

One of Germany's biggest energy firms has said it is preparing to buy Russian gas using a payment system that critics say will undermine EU sanctions.

Uniper says it will pay in euros which will be converted into roubles, meeting a Kremlin demand for all transactions to be made in the Russian currency.

Other European energy firms are reportedly preparing to do the same amid concerns about supply cuts.
Uniper said it had no choice but said it was still abiding by EU sanctions.

"We consider a payment conversion compliant with sanctions law and the Russian decree to be possible," a spokesman told the BBC.

For our company and for Germany as a whole, it is not possible to do without Russian gas in the short term; this would have dramatic consequences for our economy."
