Politics / We Hope 2018 Budget Will Be Passed In December – Osinbajo by Techknowng(m): 3:13pm On Oct 05, 2017
This is coming from the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, while speaking at a dialogue session with members of civil society organisations on Thursday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Professor Osinbajo also revealed plans by the government to promptly prepare the 2018 budget and submit it in October towards effective implementation.
This comes amid growing concerns about the poor implementation of the 2017 Appropriation Act and inadequate funding of the budget.
On Tuesday last week, the Senate had summoned the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, and her counterpart in the Ministry of Budget and Planning, Senator Udo Udoma.
The ministers were invited to brief the lawmakers on the cause of the inadequate releases and steps taken to expedite release of funds for the capital component of the 2017 Appropriation Act.

Phones / How Apple’s New Face ID Works by Techknowng(m): 6:53am On Oct 05, 2017
How Apple’s New Face ID Works

Share Tweet
Apple’s new Face ID technology appears only in the flagship iPhone X. This replaces Touch ID on that device, instead unlocking the phone via facial recognition. This has sparked some concern with users who have grown used to the speed and reliability of Touch ID and seen similar face recognition technologies fail. While the technology underlying Face ID isn’t new or revolutionary, Apple claims it’s implemented better than ever before.

How does Face ID work?

Face ID is powered by Apple’s TrueDepthcamera. When the user enrolls in Face ID, thisinfrared camera scans their face and creates a depth map with more than 30,000 points. The iPhone X uses these points to create a mathematical model of the face and then stores that model securely. On future unlock attempts, the camera re-scans the user’s face and compares the result. If it’s sufficiently similar, the device unlocks.
With gaze detection, Face ID detects when users are looking directly at the phone. When they do, it unlocks. Otherwise, the device will remain locked. This prevents unwanted unlocking when the device is sitting near the user.
What about sunglasses, beards, and darkness?

The infrared light used by Face ID is invisible to humans, but it functions much the way normal light does. However, because its frequency is lower than regular light, it has a slightly easier time passing through some objects. This includes things like sunglasseswhich are typically balanced to block visible and ultra-violet (UV) light. This light exists at the opposite, high-frequency end of the spectrum of visible light. As a result, mostsunglasses allow infrared light to pass. This permits Face ID to catch a glimpse even when sunglasses obscure your face.
The iPhone X’s much-touted A11 Bionic chip supports machine learning, allowing Face ID to adapt to changes in your appearance. If you grow a beard, cut your hair or put on glasses, Face ID should keep up with the changes. We’ll have to see how successful this feature is in practice, but if it works as advertised, that will be a major advancement in face recognition’s utility.
Infrared light also allows Face ID to work in the dark. Because the camera provides its own light source in the form of an infrared beam, the system doesn’t require external sources of light to function. It can also use the flood illuminator (basically an infrared flash) to balance and normalize lighting on your face. And because this infrared light is invisible to humans, there won’t be a bright flash. This means that, even in total darkness or uneven illumination, the iPhone X should be able to correctly identify your face.
Is Face ID secure?

According to Apple, Face ID avoids common spoofing attacks that made other facial unlocking systems insecure. Because it uses a depth-sensitive infrared camera, attackers can’t fool the camera with a photograph. Even three-dimensional masks were apparently unsuccessful in fooling Face ID.
While the methods of avoiding three-dimensional spoofing haven’t been released, infrared light can penetrate the skin, allowing the TrueDepth camera to scan subdermal features that would be difficult (if not impossible) for mask-makers to replicate. We can also assume that the many thousand points of facial recognition make it difficult to create a mask with sufficient fidelity to fool the TrueDepth camera.
Like Touch ID’s fingerprints, the mathematical models of recognized faces stay within theiPhone X’s Secure Enclave. They’re encrypted, inaccessible to other apps and much of the OS, let alone attackers. Recognized faces exist only on the device and are not stored on Apple’s servers or synced to iCloud. And as far as we know, Secure Enclave has yet to be compromised.
Will Face ID replace Touch ID?
According to Apple, Face ID’s error rate is 1 in 1,000,000. This means that Face ID could unlock for the wrong person once in a million attempts. Touch ID had an error rate of 1 in 50,000, making FaceIDmore accurate by several orders of magnitude. And just like Touch ID, Face ID can also authenticate ApplePay. Does this mean that Face ID will replace Touch ID eventually? If it turns out to be as easy and reliable as Apple claims, it just might.

Politics / Biafra: The Last Thing Nnamdi Kanu Told Me – Ejiofor, IPOB Lawyer by Techknowng(m): 11:45am On Sep 30, 2017
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has disclosed his last conversation with Nnamdi Kanu.

Ejiofor also lamented that he has not been able to reach Kanu since the military stormed his Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia, Abia State home.

The lawyer, in a chat wit Sun, recalled that he got a call from Kanu on 14th September that army personnel were shooting sporadically around his house.

“I quickly issued a statement which was widely published on the social media alerting the world of what was going on; that my client was under siege as the military was shooting for over 40 minutes trying to gain access into the house.

“He called me again that they were at the gate shooting to gain access, I asked him to remain inside, while I continued to let the world know. That was our last communication and I never heard from him again after the attack. And the rest is now story.”

On the fate of the sureties who are expected to produce the IPOB leader in court, Ejiofor said they cannot be touched “because the circumstance that presented itself is such that had gone beyond the sureties’ control.

“In legal parlance, it’s called force majeure. It’s not a situation they would be able to control. The court is a human being; it can listen to our application. If at all this incident never took place and by tomorrow we start looking for Nnamdi Kanu, they will be told to go and produce him.

“But in this case, Nnamdi Kanu had been visible; moving around, going places, meeting people and was very certain of coming to Abuja before now to face trial, so, people who attacked him, killed people in his house, wounded people and arrested people, should be in a position to show us where he is.

“It now lies with the army; it’s out of the sureties hands, so they cannot be held liable.

“I am in communication with the sureties. They don’t have cause to express fears, because it’s not within their control. They don’t know anything about what happened. The people that should be held responsible are the military and the Federal Government; simple!

“I believe if at all they wanted to arrest him, they would have extended invitation to him saying we want you at this period to interrogate you; there is allegation of this and that offence, be it police, army or the DSS. But such thing never took place. So, what informed their going to his place to shoot and kill?”

Asked if he thinks security agencies would produce Kanu on October 17 in court, Ejiofor responded: “Forget about the lies they’ve been telling; they must produce him. If they have killed my client; they should come and tell the court. Then we will now know what to do, because he has to be given befitting burial if at all such thing happened. But God forbid!”

DHQ spokesperson, John Enenche, made the declaration while stating that it was not the responsibility of the military to declare Kanu wanted.

Eneche maintained that the whereabouts of the IPOB leader was unknown.

He said this while addressing journalists on Friday.

According to Enenche, “Nnamdi Kanu is not in the custody of the military.

”It is not the responsibility of the military to declare Nnamdi Kanu wanted. The military did not proscribe IPOB.

“Due process was followed to proscribe it. The job of the military was to diagnose security issues and warned the public of consequences and that is part of our media operations.

“We did our media operations very well, otherwise that weekend would have been the longest weekend in this country and we are also very careful choosing our words and we know the law very well.”

Following an alleged military invasion of his residence in Umuahia on September 14, Kanu has not been seen or heard from.

Crime / Police Parade Five Suspected Kidnappers In Ekiti by Techknowng(m): 5:55pm On Sep 28, 2017
The Police in Ekiti State has arrested five suspects who kidnapped a 67-year-old woman, Mrs. Florence Popoola, at her residence in Ikere-Ekiti on September 14.

The suspects, according to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdullahi Chafe, were tracked down through the efforts of the anti-kidnapping unit of the Police Command.

The suspected kidnappers, Adeoye Sunday 30-year-old, Adeusi Dare 26-year-old, Ogunlayi Seun 25-year-old, Bamigboye Damilola 27-year-old and Ojo Tope 32-year-old, drove the woman to a thick forest in Awo-Ekiti and held her captive for four days.

A sum of N1.5 million was said to have been collected as ransom from the families of the victim before letting her off the hook on September 18 when the Police had closed in on them.

During the parade on Tuesday, Chafe disclosed that N323,000, being the remainder of the ransom was recovered from them.

Represented by the command’s spokesman, Alberto Adeyemi, Chafe revealed that the woman was abducted shortly after arriving from church and was whisked away in her Nissan Sunny car with registration number AG 08 KER.

The suspects who confessed to the crime revealed that they had used part of the ransom to rent a two-bedroom flat and purchased other luxury items.

But the victim, Mrs. Popoola disclosed that the suspects seized her phone and drove her out of Ikere via Ilawe before arriving on the outskirts of Awo where she was held in captivity.

She said, “They stopped at a place in the bush and they asked my children to be looking for money, that they should pay N1.5 million for my freedom.

They offered me food but I rejected their food; they beat the hell out of me and insisted that I should eat. I was forced to eat but I vomited, I defecated and urinated in the same spot where I was tied down.

“When they discovered that security men were on the trail, they changed location and continued to beat me that I have put them in trouble.

“After my children had paid the ransom, they were making moves to release me and they carried me on a bike to another unknown location.

“Some people coming from the church and night guards came to my rescue and assisted me in calling my family and it was around 9.00 pm that I breathed the air of freedom.

Phones / Samsung Galaxy X Foldable Smartphone To Be Released Soon To Compete With Iphonex by Techknowng(m): 6:23am On Sep 27, 2017
Samsung Galaxy X foldable smartphone closer to launch following certification

Samsung may be stepping up efforts to produce and release its long-rumoured foldable smartphone, the Galaxy X, after appearing in a filing in its home country of South Korea.

According to SamMobile, a Samsung device with the model number SM-G888N0 showed up at the Bluetooth SIG for Bluetooth certification a couple of months ago.

Now, a Samsung device with model number SM-G888 has appeared on South Korea’s National Radio Research Agency for certification. The NRRA is South Korea's version of the US FCC.

If the device in question is indeed the foldable Galaxy X, it's likely it will be launched initially in Samsung's home country, before making its way to other territories.

While Samsung hasn't given away much information about the phone, Slashgear says that mobile division head DJ Koh has been quoted as saying it would appear in 2018. Whether that is in prototype or final form remains unclear.

Previous reports have suggested the foldable phone won't be available until 2019, as Samsung halted development to focus on bezel-less displays instead. Now that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8, both with Infinity Displays have been released to many positive reviews, Samsung can once again focus on the Galaxy X.

The Galaxy X will more than likely feature an OLED screen and has even been rumoured to be capable of morphing into a tablet when fully unfolded.

Religion / What Do The Bible Say About Alcoholic Drink by Techknowng(m): 11:41am On Sep 24, 2017
Proverbs 31:4-7 (RSV):

[4] It is not for kings, O Lemuel,
it is not for kings to drink wine,
or for rulers to desire strong drink;
[5] lest they drink and forget what has been decreed,
and pervert the rights of all the afflicted.
[6] Give strong drink to him who is perishing,
and wine to those in bitter distress;
[7] let them drink and forget their poverty,
and remember their misery no more.

My first thought in reaction to this is 1 Timothy 5:23: “No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.”

Clearly we see a “medicinal motif” in Scripture; even in the new covenant. The cross-reference works with regard to Prov 31:6, but not so well with 31:7: “let them drink and forget their poverty.” That is the fascinating part. I suspect that it is saying to drink to some extent to forget miseries; though not to the extent of getting drunk and out of control, which is condemned in many places in Scripture.

It's also interesting that in 31:5 the “strong drink” when taken by kings is said to lead to oppression of his subjects, whereas the same thing for the poor person is almost a balm to help them forget their “misery”: scarcely any different than the philosophy of a million down-and-outers (including non-alcoholics) at any given local pub.

The same Paul writes in the same book:

1 Timothy 3:8 Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, . . . (cf. 3:3; Titus 1:7)

And elsewhere:

Romans 13:13 let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy.

1 Corinthians 5:11 But rather I wrote to you not to associate with any one who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or robber -- not even to eat with such a one.

1 Corinthians 6:10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit,

St. Peter agrees:

1 Peter 4:3 Let the time that is past suffice for doing what the Gentiles like to do, living in licentiousness, passions, drunkenness, revels, carousing, and lawless idolatry.

Proverbs itself condemns drunkenness:

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

Proverbs 23:20-21 Be not among winebibbers, or among gluttonous eaters of meat; for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

Proverbs 26:10 Like an archer who wounds everybody is he who hires a passing fool or drunkard.

Yet it is by no means against wine per se:

Proverbs 3:10 then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.

Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding. Therefore, the Bible is in no way, shape, or form, against all alcoholic drinks whatsoever. That said, how do we interpret Proverbs 31:7?

A Catholic Commentary on Scripture, edited by Dom Bernard Orchard (London: Thomas Nelson: 1953, p. 488) refers to “Two proper occasions for the use of wine, bodily suffering and mental distress; cf. Ps 103 (104), 15.”

Here is the cross-reference:

Psalm 104:14-15 Thou dost cause the grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth, and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread to strengthen man's heart.

Haydock's Catholic Bible Commentary (1859) confirms what I suspected would be the case:

“Ver. 6. Drink. Hebrew shecar, particularly palm-wine. --- Are sad. HebrHebrew, “perish,” being sentenced to die; (Mark xv. 23., and Amos ii. 8.) or, who grieve and mourn for one deceased. On such occasions no food was prepared in the house, but the friends supplied what was necessary, and went to eat and drink with the afflicted, Ecclesiastes vii. 3.

“Ver. 7. More. Not that intoxication is permitted even to them.”

In effect, then, it seems that for the ancient Hebrews and early Christians, consuming wine had (among other things) a medicinal use (Paul's suggestion for stomach problems; Prov 31:6) and in severe situations, a function as an anti-depressant or stress reliever (Prov 31:7); though in both cases, it's not sanctioned to the extent of becoming drunk, which is condemned throughout Scripture. Today we have anti-depressant and anti-anxiety pills and candy and caffeine and so forth, that help us at various periods; back then it was wine. I see no essential difference, unless it is used excessively, leading to a drunken (therefore irresponsible) state.

Eerdmans Bible Commentary (1987 edition, p. 569) states: “Drink is the anodyne of the hopeless -- there is no excuse for it for those who are not in this condition (vv. 6, 7).”

The Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary of 1864 opines: “The proper use of such drinks is to restore tone to feeble bodies and depressed minds (cf. Ps. 104:15).”

Famous Presbyterian commentator Matthew Henry chimes in:

v. 6, 7. . . . Those that have wherewithal must not only give bread to the hungry and water to the thirsty, but they must give strong drink to him that is ready to perish through sickness or pain and wine to those that are melancholy and of heavy heart; for it was appointed to cheer and revive the spirits, and make glad the heart . . .

I think we get the general idea by now.
