Are people supposed to come here to ready posts and decide on the purpose of their trips? No one owes you a feedback on their interview. So if you see one be appreciative and pick what you can from it. Coming here to poke holes and tell him the information he should share and what not is going overboard. Thank you!!
if you don't feel the need to provide value to this thread, then that's ok. Some folks genuinely come here looking for value. Pretty sure no one is scrolling through 395+ pages and counting just to listen to chit-chats.

Guys, let's provide more critical information as that's the purpose for posting here. Stuff like, what you do for work, what took you to those countries (eg school,) how old are those other visas, etc are what helped your application significantly, and not disclosing them is not that helpful for those here. Try to be as descriptive as possible without doxxing yourself.

"Me and friend are planning to visit Niagara Falls... my friend's house in New York" will weaken the average person's visa application, but not for a profile like yours, hence the importance of those.

Note how the VO went further to ask for your old passport and verify your travel history, it meant they were still undecided until they saw the history, age, and status of those visas, and could as well have denied your visa application if you didn't have your old passport with you. Therefore, your interview wasn't that great, your travel history 'saved' you. Average folks with no travel history should not "visit a friend and 9/11 memorial" not gonna work, just saying.

PS: A friend's visa success didn't make sense to me until I found out they were born in the UK (shown on passport) and it obviously played a huge part.

nnewsnjobs:
Good morning all, please I need your advice on the way to go about my visa application because I don't want the VO to see my application as being inconsistent or as if am not being straight forward.

My plan was to go for a seminar in my Field of study and experience. I filled DS160 for B1/B2 and applied for visa appointment date in 2022, I got date in August 2024, after trying many times to reschedule, I finally got May 2024 and I have no other option to reschedule so I have to stick with this date for my visa interview.

Now my challenge is that the seminar comes up ones in a year and this year own is coming up in March before my interview date which is in May 2024. So I will be going for my visa interview in May after the seminar for this year has been done with.

So my question is, when filling my new DS160 form and during the interview, what will my travel plans/purpose to the US now be?

1. Should I maintenance that I will be going for a particular seminar (this my intended seminar) next year 2025, since this was my initial plan and is still my plan. But my concern here is that I can't pay for the seminar now and will not have invitation letter or any contact in the US nor have any correspondence from them since 2025 schedule is not out yet.

OR

2. Should I change my plan to vacation (tourist visa) and during the interview I tell the VO am going for holiday/tourist in the US this year and I also want to attend so so seminar next year if my visa is granted because that was my initial plan for this visa but I can't go for the seminar this year because the seminar date for this year is done already.

Please kindly help me out here, what is the best way to go on this my situation in order not to look suspicious or inconsistent on my travel plan.
Option 2. Call and ask for emergency appointment for the 2024 conference. Otherwise, ask to reschedule to late 2024 so it's closer to the conference time. The "tourism now and conference later" reason looks sus when you hear it. Always stick to one purpose. Use conference (stronger term than seminar/workshop.) Telling mediocre stories as reason for travel will always weaken your application. Go big or go home.

Good evening everyone,
My best friend who is in the US is getting married and he wants me to be his bestman. He wants to send an invitation but doesn’t know the documents required to send an invitation.
Please what documents do I need too for this to happen?
"bestman" come on, man. Find a better reason to travel to the US. If you were a VO, would you approve your own visa?

Governor17:
On October 10 2022, I went for a B1/B2 visa interview. The purpose of my visit was to purchase a loom machine and also attend a three-day workshop held by the same manufacturer from whom I had been planned to buy the machine. I am the procurement manager for a firm owned by my wife, and I was to travel to purchase a new machine for my company as well as attend a three-day class organized by the company. When I arrived at the interview, I just had 4 minutes before the consular officer denied my visa and advised me to try again later. Non of my documents was checked.

I was only asked this 2 questions.

1. Ques: what’s the Purpose of my trip?
Answer: I’m traveling to purchase a loom and attend a short course?

Ques 2: Tell me about your company.

Ans: told him the name of the company and what we do.

To my surprise, the next thing I heard was....you are not eligible for this kinda bla bla. He asked me nothing bout my wife and none of my documents was checked

Then I asked him why, so he asked me if have been out of the country before, I said no

I will need to reapply. And I need your candid guidance on how to navigate my next interview and I also need to know what went wrong? Thanks
Potential red flags:
1. your wife owns the company you work for (assuming you mentioned these when describing your company.) Huge red flag. "My wife owns the company" is the stupidest thing to hear as a visa officer. You are married to each other; saying you both own the company sounds better, although I wouldn't recommend it, leads me to next point.
2. your company was perceived as an SME (small business) and shows weak home ties.
3. your wife went on a B1/B2 and hasn't returned.

Advice:
1. Let your wife return first to prove non-immigrant intent. Wait for 3 months after she returns.
2. Learn to describe your company as this huge conglomerate and you hold a managerial position (salary should show this.) If possible try not to link your wife to your company, she's only married to you, and having your work tied together can be an issue if her recent nonimmigrant visa intent is questionable. Having the company name as your name will make this harder as well.
3. make sure you're not listing close relatives in the US that could potentially hurt your visa intent.
4. Make your reason for travel compelling. "To purchase a loom" is not compelling. You can also purchase it from Nigeria and have it shipped down. The "short course" is too often used. Make something else.
Or don't apply at all. You should never be desperate for a B1/B2 visa anyway, being desperate already shows immigrant intent as opposed to non-immigrant intent. Now that you've been denied, why isn't your company sending someone else to procure the equipment?

Just let it go, man, and find a better reason or time to travel.

How many of them have you seen come here to say the dates gotten worked out?

Denied under 214(b)

Profile:

Affected by the UAE visa ban and returned to Nigeria after failing to obtain a new work permit. Passport was renewed in Malaysia so place of issue was out there in the open upon inspecting the passport. Over a year of experience as a SWE in AI and RFID/IOT Engineering.
Dual B.Sc. in Computer Science (2021) from a UK university, and a Malaysian university
1st Class Honors in both.

Program:

M.Sc. in Computer Science, BGSU, funding covered by parents (Canadian permanent residents).

Context:

VO was stern and visibly/slightly upset with all preceding candidates including myself. Nonetheless, confidence and grooming was on point.

Interview:

VO: Good morning, pass your I-20 and passport.
-- [Greeted back and obliged]

VO: Who will be sponsoring your studies?
-- My parents will be fully backing me up for the study. With over 2 decades of experience as a chartered accountant, she is a financial analyst manager at ... in Winnipeg, Canada, where she's currently a permanent resident. On the other hand, my dad has over 3 decades of experience in the hospitality and events services industry and recently launched his equipment trading company in Canada where he's also a permanent resident. I am expected to manage the Nigerian branch which we have registered in Lagos upon returning. [Cuts in as I was about to declare their financial status]

VO: Aside from Malaysia what other countries have you been to?
-- [Succinctly described my travel history in Malaysia and UAE, and offered older passports since she was inspecting the pages/stamps on the current one]

VO: [Types for a while and hands over blue paper] You do not qualify for this visa under US Immigration Law.
-- [Walks away dispassionately (I'm a calculative person and a scientist, so I never make the mistake of associating emotions with statistically unfavorable situations {82% rejection rates for the F-1 in Nigeria})]

--------------------------------

PS - I won't be reapplying as my situation and profile almost certainly will not change, but will focus on seeking employment overseas. Please direct potentially sensitive queries to qpdqr@mailed.ro (valid for 24hrs) if you have something valuable to offer that cannot be publicly disclosed, in regards to my case.
your parents are canadian permanent residents, why not get a visa to canada and go to school there, or apply from there. It makes much sense that way, instead of having to explain that your parents have high status and are canadian residents. The USA takes non-immigration intent really seriously, and you've just shown to the VO you have immigration intent and that you're using them as a stepping stone to continue your country hopping already shown by your residence in UAE, Malaysia, etc.

"My parents. Dad is a veteran in the hospitality industry with branches in Canada, and mom is a chartered accountant and top manager at X multinational company. They have $50k of graduate school funds for me, with an additional $20k if I come out summa cum laude."
Short, sweet, and concise.

VO: Aside from Malaysia what other countries have you been to?
-- [Succinctly described my travel history in Malaysia and UAE, and offered older passports since she was inspecting the pages/stamps on the current one]
when describing your travel history, it might help if you show that you were a child accompanying your parents through their many multinational company travels. It sells better (if it is true.) Just hopping from UAE to Malaysia without doing business or schooling does not look good for your non-immigration intent application.

You should try again, this time, don't be in haste to mention your parents' canada PR status, it'll likely hurt your application. This is an example of how what we think will work to our favor, instead works against us.

this is a sponsor issue. 120k for a MS (or Bachelors) degree at Cornell isn't good financial decision and the VO can see through that. At least get 70% scholarship for it to be worth it. Your sponsor can barely afford half of 120k, and since he isn't your biological father, it's too much betting. You had to bring MPower into it, huh? That was the final straw.

Good luck on reapplying but get another school with $60k tuition, my friend. Let Cornell go

VO: What do you do
Me: I’m a quality control pharmacist at …. I ascertain that finished products meet standards of pharmaceutical grade……VO cuts in

Me: Yes

VO: You are going for a master’s in chemistry you have done these programs before (sternly)
Me: No, I will be focused on advanced methods of physicochemical analysis of drugs……I will come back to take a position at NAFDAC….VO cuts in

VO: Who will be covering your 10k deficit ?
Me: My sister, she owns……..a chain of frozen foods businesses…..VO cuts in

VO: Has she sponsored anybody before ?
Me: No, she has not

VO: You do not qualify for a non immigrant visa….then issues blue paper.

Everything was over in less than 2mins.
Wow. a few things:
how old are you?

VO: You are going for a master’s in chemistry you have done these programs before (sternly)
Me: No, I will be focused on advanced methods of physicochemical analysis of drugs……I will come back to take a position at NAFDAC….VO cuts in
the VO thinks that pharmacy and chemistry aren't closely linked. Here's how you could have responded:
"Yes, my college bachelor's degree was in pharmaco-chemistry" or some shit like that. Always know what the VO wants to hear and try as much as you can to give him that. That question is to show if what you studied, or currently do is linked to what you're going to study. Every question counts.

Also, seems you were already answering the 'what will you do after your studies' question, and the VO thinks you were trying to be disingenuous with your answers. Answer what is being asked, or closely. Don't answer unrelated questions, or at least answer the main questions without a doubt and see that the VO is nodding before moving on to your own agenda.

VO: Who will be covering your 10k deficit ?
Me: My sister, she owns……..a chain of frozen foods businesses…..VO cuts in
This question is to ascertain the economic status of your sponsor. You're supposed to use recognizable words like:
My sister, she and her husband (if she's married) are Cofounders of Bleep Company, a logistics tier-2 company based in Aba, with headquaters in X. Upsell your sponsor to improve your chances. $10k is not much money, this question was just the last straw.

VO: Has she sponsored anybody before ?
Me: No, she has not
"Yes, if you mean sponsoring part of my college education" shows that your sister has always been involved in sponsoring you in some way (especially if she's 10 years older) eg pocket money. If you answer Yes, then demonstrate that it has always been the little things, and this master's education is the apex of all when she'll finally stop sponsoring. Don't say all of this, of course, but you get the point. Say something that hints that your dear sister and her husband has been involved in your career progress.

the question isn't really a big deal and I can see why you immediately answered "No." which is equally a good answer but depends on what you follow with it. How would you even know if she has sponsored anybody before? Not sure if this question is really a thing. Maybe you should verify with your sister if she has, the visa officers might keep a record, who knows?

My advice is, you should try again soon. And prepare harder. Get every possible question and get the appropriate answers. Remember, it isn't about how truthful you can answer, it's about what they want to hear (truthful of course). If you have a deep Nigerian accent, then you want to keep your answers short, sweet, and to the point.

Get someone to look at your DS160 form, most disqualifications result from what is entered into that file. Usually, the VO makes up their mind before you even open your mouth. Make sure you have enough social and family ties back home. really important

Don't. Risk. It. Too many red flags. Since your aunt will sponsor you, why don't you get admission into another school in a faraway state? it should be easy. Also, I hope your aunt is doing a prestigious occupation, and she's not married, because why else will she be pouring her hard-earned money into you. Even average Americans don't sponsor their kids to college, they push them to get loans.

The thing is that my husband is staying back with me but my child will be traveling with me just that the child is not yet born.
I am currently pregnant and will be due in May.

Can the I-20 form be submitted without listing any dependent and applying later when the child is born?
Will listing a dependent on the DS-160 affect my chance of visa approval?

Please what should I do in this case?
Graduate school as a new mother is arguably the hardest thing on this planet. The VO might deny you as a favor to you. Like others said, don't risk it, defer to Spring.

My dad is the sponsor so money isn't the problem but I don't know the best visa status he should apply with...
Your dad is sponsoring you. Going alone first might be best, but since you've already studied in H town and returned, they'd believe you this time. I think the main issue is that someone else will sponsor a family abroad. What will your husband be doing? Make sure you have a detailed plan for the kids and your hubby, with accurate cost of living numbers. Since you already lived in Houston before.

Pls advise me on how to declare this in the form and to the VO at the interview (if asked)...

Thank you.
Declare it in the form, don't falsify facts. It helps if your school is not in the same state as said brother. I hope he's not your sponsor lol. You don't need to emphasize different mother, doesn't matter.

Just say you guys talk once in a blue moon. Don't portray to know too much about him, might give up vibes that you're going to live with him and immigrate. All the best.

There were 3 Consular Officers on desk, two men and a woman at the middle desk. I have been praying to meet the woman cos I observed she is calm and reasonable with applicants, she gave a young couple that even the wife's pregnancy is so glaring a visa with smiles and wish them safe journey to US but denied the next applicant she interviewed, yet I wish I met her but I was called in another window.

To the interview ....

Me: Good morning, happy new month
VO: Good morning, I can see you are going to MCCC, how do you find out about the school
Me: From online, from my research online
VO: What course are you going for
Me: Web Development
VO: Have you travelled out of Nigeria before
Me: Yes I have been to Ghana
VO: What do you do
Me: I have an internet cafe where I do online registrations, printings and lots more
VO: How is your work related to Web Development
Me: (Without confidence and lowered voice this time) I have websites which I operates but there are some difficulties I'm facing which google always give me reports to debug but I could not so I want to go for Web Development to be able to rectify the issues.
VO: Sorry you are not qualify for F1 visa now.

I was so weak and heavy to even talk to anybody, people that are outside waiting to be called in can also read my feelings. It was after my interview that one of my friends now hint me about Nairaland.
I am available for corrections please.
Yes, you're right. Your answers were very weak.
"How did you find out about the school?:
Through a former research associate of mine. We met last year through a research conference during the pandemic, and his professor liked my work etc Always go hard on the research angle, always.
"What do you do?"
Software Utility Manager. anything "online" is a red flag, printings, registrations are ordinary words. Thumbs down

You have been denied countless times before. You should know better than to rush down to the embassy for your F1 interview without preparing like your life depended on it.

Hi guys,

Please I would want your candid advice.
I have gotten my 1-20 form for I and my wife, Fall 2022 session. Please what is the chance of getting a F-1 and F-2 visa with 3k scholarship &
bulk of funds coming from a sponsor (relative) who resides in the US and an opportunity to get GTA if visa is granted.

Those who have gone through this route successfully, planning to or any other person. Your advice will really go a long way. Thanks
A relative (maybe Uncle/aunt not even biological parent) who resides in the US wanting to sponsor you and your wife? c'mon now. Don't go that route, please. More than half of parents in the US send their kids to get school loans to study. No relative is doing that for you. Don't risk it.

If I were you, I'd go alone first, using that relative as sponsor (still dangerous by the way), then let wife come after a semester or two.

1) Can i update my I-20 immediately after i get VISA even before getting on the plane to the USA so i can use it for my accommodation and fee.

2) When is it advisable to use the Mpower loan as i already have my final approval letter.
Please don't update your I-20 until you enter the US. There shouldn't be inconsistencies when they check it at the port of entry.

Hello, Good evening everyone, this is a bit urgent please.

I've read a lot of rejections at the visa interview due to being unemployed and not having enough reason to come back to Nigeria. Actually my dad has a family business which he has been running for years. I do work there sometimes. We actually work with a lot of big companies in lagos. I'm thinking if filling out that I'm employed in my family's company in my DS form and also presenting my Company's ID card at the interview just in case.. this will proof that I'm employed and I have enough reason to come home and manage the family business along with my dad.

Is this a good idea ?
My advice is that you go big on the employee angle (show you're doing really well as a middle-class person.) and you're a top manager in the company. You can also emphasize that the company is your Dad's and that you have a place in your family business, but it must be presented correctly. If you show too much that the company is your family's, they might just think you're using the business as a front to japa.

I'm assuming you're fully funded by the school. If not, don't take my advice pls

After proper evaluation, I figured that the issue isn’t home ties. Reason because there are usually 4 home ties you could use. Professional, Marriage, Business and properties.

I use professional. I work with a Microsoft Partner here in Nigeria in line with my intended course of study.

The point is that, The VO figured that since I am on a loan, I will be tied in the US to repay the loan before coming back. That means I haven’t provided sufficient reason to come back after school.

If I have full funding, I can prove to the VO that I don’t have anything to do in the US once I am done with my studies then come back to my company to pick a managerial role based on my new degree.

I hope this helps.
Spot on. You know what you're doing. Get the loan bit out of the way and try again, but be on top of your game this time. Good luck

Since the VO was kind enough to tell you that the issue was one of weak home ties, why are you still insistent in your belief that the problem was one of funding?
To be fair, that's what they say all the time. Everything ties back to home ties since it is a non-immigrant visa. Lack of funding or a question on affordability means you're willing to risk it all to go to school, hence weak home ties. Same with other reasons.

My advice is he/she should recall the exact line by line of the interview and get someone to review it for them.

What location is that LAGOS or Abuja

I chose Lagos but people are telling me it's not a great choice that I should change to ABUJA because it's better.
Lagos. Although I almost changed to Abuja after seeing posts here but didn't, I couldn't afford to start all over again.

Hi,

So I personally feel maybe reapply without your daughter as F2.
You clearly have a strong support system here in Nigeria, your mum, the family owned school and your husband. And collectively your daughter has more stability and support than if she were with you juggling school, daycare and living alone.
Maybe do your F1 application then 6 months down the line, They can apply for your daughter’s F2.
Agree. We tell people every time, if you're married or/and with kids, always go alone the first time. Get your F1 out of the way first, before pushing for your dependents one after the other. Put your best foot forward always, and be strategic. Don't go with your family all at once, and expect the VO to trust you for a non-immigrant visa. Don't give the VO any opportunity to deny your visa.

Good afternoon. I applied for EA via the Lagos embassy about 3 weeks ago but there has been no feedback or decision.

I am contemplating on changing to Abuja but before I do cancel my visa appointment in Lagos, I would love to confirm if I will need to pay a new visa fee before I can apply for the emergency request in Abuja or emergency request is one for Lagos and one for Abuja?

Thank you.
Looks like we're in the same boat. My emergency request has not been responded to for 2 weeks now. I can't cancel because I will be back to square one. What if Abuja request takes longer? What if I will be asked to pay a new visa fee? What if there are no dropbox dates (I'm eligible for renewal)? What ifs and what ifs...

If I were you, I'd wait for the emergency request to be responded to, which is exactly what I'm doing. My school is in session right now and I'm praying hard I get a visa before my exams.

*VERY LONG POST ALERT‼️*

I'm here to say a BIG thank you to everyone who helped me correct and trim my proposed transcript here.

My Visa was approved @ Abuja yesterday 31st March, 2022

-My first Interview was on December 1, 2021 – surge date @ Lagos.
-My husband and I were interviewed by a young white female V.O
-Full funding (61k plus) covers for both of us (58k plus) with excess (3k plus)
-There was massive denial. More than 12 people before us were denied.

Intro:
-I completed my application in February, had issues with CGI portal for 3 weeks which was resolved on March 1, then 3 days after, I was able to pick March 23 date which was posted to a group.
-On getting to the embassy on March 23, they said no interview (it wasn't funny). They directed us on what to do, after which we started saying June dates.
-June is a no no for me, because by then, I would be very heavy. So, motivated by a friend whose resumption is on May 3, we prayerfully went uninvited to the embassy on Monday to make complaints. -We were there for about 6-7 hours, lodging our complaints to different officers God favoured us. At about 12noon, a VIP came in to make complaints, his complaints was immediately forwarded to the Visa officers along with ours. And the reply came that they will open early dates for us, that we should go home. We obeyed, but were very doubtful as this was just a verbal assurance.
-We however planned to send them reminder mails. Do you know that I was still on the bus going home, when this March 31 and April 1 dates came up on the emergency portal? I quickly picked and called my friends to pick and tell others.
-In the midst of all these stress I kept telling God, please I don't want an anyhow date again o, just give me a date in which my Visa will be approved. And that's what HE did. I give GOD all the praise
Congrats. Did all of these embassy encounters happen in Abuja?

I'm currently enrolled in school and I'm stranded here in Lagos. My Lagos emergency request is more than 2 weeks old and hasn't been answered. Should I go and lodge complaints like you did? Maybe I'll be lucky to get quick dates on the emergency portal.

What do you think? My last appointment was dropbox; I missed it and showed up a week after, but they refused to collect my documents

Sorry, things happen just take it easy with you.

Except they have changed the dropbox arrangement, before it was stopped you are not given a date after applying. All you need do at the end of your application is to print the appointment page send it with your passport to the embassy or consulate as the case may be.
Well, must’ve changed. I showed up at the embassy a week after and at the final stage of documents collection, I was bounced. Because I wasn’t on schedule that day.

Dropbox appointment dates aren’t even available for some time now.

Plus, I have no idea if/how I’ll write my exams in late April and I’m struggling to carry out my TA grading and lab assignments. I can only wait for a miracle.
