Food / What You Need To Know About Tiger Nuts And Amazing Ways To Prepare Them by tessylove2(f): 11:39pm On Nov 04, 2017
Tiger nuts, one of the hottest super foods in the market. These wrinkled, marble-sized small, tuberous rhizomes of a sedge grass (cyperus esculentus lativum) that’s been cultivated for millennia around the world. With a flavor reminiscent of both coconut and almond, they earn their name from a tiger-striped exterior. They can be eaten freshly dug out of the ground, or cooked–roasted, boiled, or juiced. Packaged tiger nuts have been dried to make them shelf-stable; they’re also sold as tiger nut flour, and as a tiger nut milk. All come with numerous health benefits. Tiger nuts have been around for 4000 years they are a vital component of our ancestors’ diets—that plus the fact that the tiny tubers are high in fiber, low in calories and fat, and non-GMO, making them an attractive ingredient for low-carb and paleo dieters alike.

WHAT ARE THE ACTUAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF TIGER NUTS?

For starters, tiger nuts are super-high in resistant starch fiber, which has been getting a lot of buzz for its weight loss benefits. Resistant starch passes through the stomach and small intestine without being digested, and may even help you lose weight by reducing blood sugar spikes and keeping you fuller longer than other foods with the same number of calories, she says. It also benefits your gut by acting as a prebiotic, stimulating the growth of good bacteria in the digestive tract.

One kilogram, raw tiger nuts, contains 120 calories, 10g of fiber (about 40% of your daily value), 9g of naturally occurring sugars, tons of vitamins and minerals such as magnesium and iron, and 7g of fat, most of which is oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that research shows can help reduce appetite and promote weight loss. For some context, a serving of almonds—about 23 nuts—has 163 calories and about a third of the filling fiber of tiger nuts.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TIGER NUTS BEFORE YOU TRY THEM

People with digestive issues are sensitive to high-fiber foods might experience some gas, bloating, cramping, or diarrhea if you eat too many tiger nuts, but other than that, there aren’t many drawbacks.

HOW TO PREPARE AND EAT TIGER NUTS

Here are 9 ways to use them;

Eat Them Whole

Of course, tiger nuts are delicious in their whole state, and I often eat them by the handful tiger nuts come either. You can also soak tiger nuts for a few hours in order to soften them. I find after about four hours of soaking, the nuts inflate with water and take on the crunchy texture.

Make Tiger Nut Milk

One of the first tiger nut recipes you’ll want to try, is making a simple dairy-free milk. All you really need is to blend with a high-powered blender and sieve with a cheesecloth or a nut milk bag but try soaking your tiger nuts over night and then blending them in a ratio of 2:1, two cups of water to 1 cup of tiger nuts, along with half a vanilla bean. Using a nut milk bag, separate the milk from pulp. chill in the refrigerator and drink. Although you can always skip this step and buy pre-made milks, too. Keep the pulp to re-purpose as tiger nut flour.

Once you have milk, you can use that liquid in countless ways just like dairy milk. Or, you can use the tiger nut milk base and add other flavors to create an oatmeal or with cereal, added to morning coffee, added to various baked goods in place of dairy milk, or just sipped as it is!

Make Tiger Nut Chia Pudding

A natural way to introduce tiger nut milk into your diet is through breakfast cereal, oatmeal, or chia pudding. I love that tiger nuts add a subtle, natural sweetness to dishes, and the milk is perfect. addition to an abundance of dishes. Tiger nut milk is a great vehicle to re-hydrate chia seeds, and once you mix the two, you can add any other flavors you like.

Make Tiger Nut Flour

You can take the leftover tiger nut pulp from step 2 and repurpose that into a “flour” by dehydrating the pulp. From my experience in baking with tiger nut flour, the flour acts in a similar fashion to almond flour, adding moisture and chewiness. So, I sometimes sub in tiger nut flour for almond. Tiger nuts are a bit sweeter than almonds, so they add a nice natural sweetness to recipes as well. Pre-made tiger nut flours are also available online, or at natural foods markets and Whole Foods.

Make Tiger Nut Cookies

Tiger nut flour is an excellent option for gluten-free bakers. As mentioned, when baked, tiger nut flour works in a recipe similarly to almond flour, with the added boost of a slight sweetness. Here’s a classic chocolate chip version.

Make Tiger Nut Pancakes

Using tiger nut flour, I’ve found that tiger nut pancakes remain moist but not too heavy, and the batter binds well. Feel free to jazz up the recipe with any baking spices you enjoy.

Make Tiger Nut Ice Cream

One of the downsides of non-dairy ice cream is that oftentimes the outcome is less creamy than one might expect. That’s because you’re not adding full-fat milk or egg yolks, ingredients which add to traditional ice cream but because tiger nuts are quite rich on their own, tiger nut milk yields a great ice cream base.

Make Tiger Nut Bread

Tiger nut flour is a great ingredient to added extra moisture and fiber to baked goods, both savory and sweet. Tiger nut flour also works well in breads, which gain their lightness from the addition of baking soda, while eggs bind the loaf together.

Make Tiger Nut Burgers

Anyone who has ever tried a veggie burger will have noted the addition of ingredients like rice, lentils, beans, mushrooms, and, of course, vegetables. Some veggie burgers even incorporate flour or other such ground grains to help join the other ingredients together. So, in place of wheat, tiger nuts serve as a healthier gluten-free option when making a plant-based patty.

A new era for the consumption of tiger nuts has begun. Until now it was strongly linked to the production of horchata but this is changing. This tuber is beginning to gain ground on its own and time will make it receive the attention it deserves. Innovation continues every day. How will the tiger nut surprise us again?

Health / Easy Method Of Self Breast Examination, Fight Against Cancer! #pink October by tessylove2(f): 10:12pm On Oct 26, 2016
Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), also referred to as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of cancer. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

A variety of events around the world is organised in October, including walks and runs, and the pink illumination of landmark buildings. In different countries, the National Football League promotes breast cancer awareness by incorporating pink on and off the field, and comic strip artists use pink on one day in October. As you can see my About me page by your right-hand side also changed, I changed to my pink outfit in commemoration of the fight against Cancer.

I'm a strong lady and I strongly support the fight against this deadly disease, this month couldn't have passed without me penning down my thoughts on this issue. My heart goes out to all the beautiful woman around the world fighting this deadly disease, you shall come out victorious.

Breast self-massage is simple, helps prevent cancer as well as detect it. Breast self-massage helps keep breast skin supple. Breast self-massage is a way to be intimate with your breasts. Breast self-massage is a piece of women’s wisdom. Breast self-massage is safe. Breast self-massage is free.

Many of the women I’ve talked with say they don’t do breast self-exams, though most think they ought to. No one wants to look for (or, heaven forbid, find!) cancer. We’ve been trained to avoid danger, and looking for cancer sounds like looking for trouble. Our bodies are influenced by what we think, so how can it be safe to spend time every month doing a breast self-exam, worrying if we’re about to find a lump? But we feel guilty when we don’t.

And what are we supposed to feel when we touch our breasts anyway? They feel full of lumps! Most of us aren’t sure how to touch or examine our breasts or what we’d do if we did feel something truly suspicious. Our guilt and confusion make it all even more complex.

Breast self-massage offers a way to let go of this tension and get in touch with yourself. This soothing, nurturing self-massage is a pleasurable and relaxing way to get to know your breasts. It avoids the worry of checking for cancer while providing an excellent early-warning system should cancer arise. Regular, loving touching of our breasts allows us to recognise normal breast changes without fear and gives us time to respond thoughtfully to abnormal changes. Breast self-massage is also a quiet, focused time that alerts us to any changes that require our attention.

Infused (not essential) herbal oils are an important element of breast self-massage. When herbs are infused into oil, active plant components are liberated and can be massaged into breast tissue – where they help reverse abnormal cellular changes such as hyperplasia, atypia, precancers in cancers. But if you don’t have any, plain olive oil works fine.

WHEN SHOULD I DO MY BREAST SELF-MASSAGE?

Now. Anytime. All the time. Sure, your breasts are less lumpy at some times of the month. But you can do breast self-massage whenever you want, even if they're lumpy. If the best time for you to pay attention to yourself is when you bleed, because that’s when you take the time to be alone, then that’s the time to do breast self-massage. You could do it every week and get to know how your breasts change with your cycle and with the moon, but most likely you’ll do it every month. I like to do my breast self-massage monthly.

HOW DO I DO BREAST SELF-MASSAGE

First, get your oil, then, create a comfortable, private place where you can lean back: in a warm bath or prop up with cushions in bed. (Protect linens and clothing from oil stains.) Arrange yourself there, bare-breasted, with your oils close at hand.

Let your eyelids fall. Put your hands over your heart and hum. Cup your breasts with your hands and hum. Imagine or visualise energy streaming out of your nipples. Allow your breasts and heart to open and flow as you hum.

Open your eyes. Transfer some oil to your palms, rub your hands together briskly until they feel warm. Place them on either side of one breast and hum.

Cup your fingers alongside or under your breast, thumbs touching up as high on the chest as possible. (If your breasts are very large, rest the right breast in the right palm and massage with the left thumb, starting in the armpit and moving toward the center of the chest.) Press in and slide your thumbs down toward the nipple, pressing the breast tissue into your fingers and palms. Stretch your thumbs up toward the collarbone again, but slightly farther apart, press in and slide down.

Continue until your thumbs are as far apart as possible (the middle of your chest and your armpit). Repeat, gradually increasing pressure, but only as long as it feels good. Caution: There is a slight possibility of spreading breast cancer through vigorous massage, rough handling, or very deep pressure.

Transfer more oil to your palms and rub your hands together. Cup your breast as before, thumbs up and touching. Hum. Repeat the previous pattern, but break up the stroke: Instead of a long, slow, smooth stroke, use your thumbs to make a lot of overlapping short strokes, gradually moving down the chest. Try various degrees of pressure.

Raise the arm of the breast you’re massaging, and put your hand behind you or on your head. If your breast leans to the outside, prop a pillow under that shoulder or lean over. Cover your breast with your free hand and hum.

Dip your fingers into your oil and starting with your armpit, press the finger pads of your first two or three fingers down with enough pressure to hold the skin, and make a small circle. Don’t let your fingers slide over the skin. Keep making little circles (with enough pressure to feel the underlying structures) as you trace an imaginary spiral from your armpit around and around your breast, growing ever smaller until you reach your nipple. (If it is difficult or impossible for you to use your finger pads, use your palm.) Cover your breast with your hand and hum.

Curl your fingers into your armpit and gently grasp the ridge of lymph-rich tissues and muscles that extend from the shoulder down into the breast. Move up and down this ridge several times, using small squeezes or long glides or little spirals or your own strokes.

AFTERWARDS . . .

After your breast self-massage, take a moment to record your experience. This will help you learn more quickly what’s normal for you. You can draw a map of your breasts to help you remember what you’ve felt. Try using colours. If you like, make up a little song to hum during your massage. The keynote in breast self-massage is the pleasure.

Food / How To Make Delicious Akara (bean Ball)..what I Had For Breakfast Yesterday! by tessylove2(f): 1:28am On Oct 23, 2016
Akara (Beanball) is a deep fried meal made from ground beans (Black eyed peas either white or the brown species) mixed with other ingredients as you will find out in this recipe to make a sumptuous delicious breakfast. It's one of the most common meals you'd find on the breakfast table in most Nigerian homes during the weekends.

It can be taken alone as a snack or served with Pap (akamu "Igbo"/ Ogi "Yoruba"/Koko"Hausa"wink, Bread, Garri, peppered stew e.t.c.

Akara also known as bean balls, bean cakes, bean fritas or acarajé in Portuguese, its is a Nigerian breakfast recipe made with beans normally eaten during the weekend, precisely Saturday morning.
Akara balls remind me so much of the weekends when I was in secondary school, my mum doesn't miss any Saturday without preparing akara for our eating pleasure and we all loved it.
This recipe is also going to be the one of the softest, easiest, fluffiest akara you'd ever make.

Ingredients to make Akara

2 cup of Beans (black-eyed or brown beans)
2 habanero peppers (also chilli peppers)
1 big sized onion
Salt to taste
Vegetable Oil for frying/ palm oil (For deep frying)
3 Chilli pepper (Shombo)
2 Scotch bonnet pepper (Ata rodo)
Crayfish little quantity.

Tools you will need

Blender
Mortar and Pestle
Sieve

Procedure

Sort the beans to separate the chaff of the beans, today, I used the white beans and it came out very nice. To remove the skin, there are three methods i.e The hand method, the blender method and the mortar and pestle method. The hand and the mortar and pestle method are the manual way of peeling beans while the blender method is easier and could take few minutes to complete.

I used the mortar and pestle method, just put your beans int the mortar and add water but not too much and pound it but not hard within 5 minutes the coat of the beans will pill off. Then remove it and put in a bowl for washing.

It is also important to know that you do not let salt come in contact with the beans you will use in making akara till you are ready to fry it. Salt is believed to destroy the leavening property of beans. This is what prevents spattering of the beans batter during frying. Also, do not blend onions with the beans while blending it else while frying it, your akara will come out scattered or it will even scatter and mess up your frying oil.

Then soak the beans in water to make it soft enough for your blender. If you will grind it using the heavy duty grinders in Nigerian markets like I did because I wanted it extra smooth, it will not be necessary to soak the beans for a long time.

Cut the pepper and onions into desirable sizes and blend them differently and then blend your beans and crayfish together.

Making Akara

When grinding the beans, don't add to much water, the less water you add at the grinding stage, the more the beans batter will stay together during frying thereby reducing spatter.

Set some vegetable oil on the cooker to heat up, I used vegetable oil, but if you want the native kind of taste you can also use red oil, trust me, it tastes delicious too. The oil should be at least 3 inches deep.
Put some of the ground beans into a mortar and stir the beans puree with the pestle in a continuous circular motion. You need to apply some pressure so that you can energise the particles of the beans puree and make it smooth.

This stirring technique releases the gas that will act as a leavening agent to the beans particles, making them rise and somehow stick together and rise.

Keep stirring till the ground beans appear whiter and you can perceive its peculiar aroma.
Add some of your ground pepper and onions till you get the consistency as shown below.

Check to make sure the oil is hot enough to sizzle but not too hot. If too hot, the akara will spatter as soon as the beans batter hits the oil.

Add salt to your taste and stir again. Salt should always be added just before scooping the beans mixture into the oil.

If salt stays in the mixture for extended periods of time, it will destroy the leavening property of the beans.

This property is what makes the akara float in the oil and prevent splatter during frying.

To fry the akara, scoop the mixture with a tablespoon and slowly pour this into the oil and add onions in between the akara and also drop some into the oil for the special aroma and taste as shown below.

Fry the underside till its brown and flip to fry the top side too.

When the akara balls are brown all over, remove and place in a sieve lined with paper towels.

Iate mine with hot pap and peak milk! Yum!!! Lol

What will you eat yours with? Pap, bread, tea or garri?

Health / New Research Alert! Paracetamol Consumption During Pregnancy May Cause Your Baby by tessylove2(f): 12:01am On Oct 23, 2016
According to recent research, taking common painkillers during pregnancy more often is likely to raise the risk of autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, especially boys, new research warns.
The findings also showed that prenatal exposure to paracetamol raises the risk of autism spectrum diseases more in boys.

“The male brain may be more vulnerable to harmful influences during early life. Our differing gender results suggest that androgenic endocrine disruption, to which male brains could be more sensitive, may explain the association,” lead author Claudia Avella-Garcia, a researcher at Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL), a Spanish research organisation said.

On the other hand, maternal intake of paracetamol increased the risk of ADHD in children of both genders.

“An increase in the number of symptoms that a child has, can affect him or her, even if they are not severe enough to warrant a clinical diagnosis of a neurodevelopmental disorder,” Avella-Garcia added.

The exposed children were at higher risk of hyperactivity or impulsivity symptoms at age five.

For the study, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, the team recruited 2,644 mother-child pairs in a birth cohort study during pregnancy.

Paracetamol could be harmful to neurodevelopment for several reasons.

First of all, it relieves pain by acting on cannabinoid receptors in the brain.

Since these receptors normally help determine how neurones mature and connect with one another, paracetamol could alter these important processes, the researchers explained.

“It can also affect the development of the immune system, or be directly toxic to some foetuses that may not have the same capacity as an adult to metabolise this drug, or by creating oxidative stress,” noted Jordi Julvez, one of the researchers from CREAL.

I was browsing online and I bumped into this article and decided to share it with us, this is just for us to take note and be careful, also reduce the intake while pregnant, we never can tell.

I know I normally take paracetamol two tablets thrice daily when I was pregnant but they all came out very sound and healthy.

One thing we should be aware is that all these our oyinbo people keep finding out different things every day , big kudos to them though but we should also try to minimise the intake so that our adorable will come out healthy and alive.

I'm using this opportunity to wish my pregnant friends a happy and safe delivery in advance and for those still looking up to God for the fruit of the womb, in no time, you will have a testimony

Have a wonderful weekend ahead guys.

Health / Benefits Of Healthy Living by tessylove2(f): 11:37pm On Oct 22, 2016
Living healthy is good for us to keep our body healthy and fit, we must learn to eat and drink healthy.
what do I mean by eating healthy? Incorporating in balanced diet including fruits, vegetables and lots of water in what we consume.

It is said that water it's a substance which is colourless, tasteless and odourless. So, for you to kick start your day, it is very important to start it the early morning water therapy because it helps detoxify your body system for the new day.

We really don't have an option but to stay healthy and alive because health is indeed wealth.

How is this therapy done? I know you are itching to know about it ,it's very simple.

Take a glass or two of water immediately you get out of bed in the morning that way if you are even constipated it will help your bowel movement to be easy.

Some of us when eating, we take a bottle of soft drink and place on our tables, that's not right nothing can ever replace water, instead of the drink use water, the drink is sugar and daily consumption of those drinks could be harmful to our system.

Veggies and fruits also help the body in every aspect, they provide vitamins and minerals that help the body to function properly. It's better to eat them before any meal, they are called starters, say like 30 minutes to one hour before your meal, that way your system wouldn't get messed up, like your tummy been bloated.

The last and very important aspect of keeping healthy and fit is exercising, exercising your body daily should be your normal duty even if it's just taking a 30 minutes work, running jogging and then any other form of exercise you can carry out you got to move those joints make them flexible, so that your blood will keep circulating properly ,that way you wouldn't have anybody pains or even high blood pressure which is normally caused by accumulated fat due to lack of exercise.

For those that eat too much food at a go, please It's advisable to eat in portions or if you prefer rather than eating large quantity at once that will only make you fat and always sleepy because our body system just utilizes a little of what you have eaten and the rest will turn to waste then you will go fill up your loo.

Then, your breakfast should be a must! it's advisable to eat like a KING in the morning, eat well, then for lunch you can snack on anything but make sure you eat your dinner not later than 6pm, when you do so and you are kind of hungry later in at night, I would also advise you eat fruits before going to bed, rather than eating another food.

Hope this little advice of mine has educated someone out there.
