Factsheet: Update on Exercise Crocodile Smile II in the South West and Niger Delta

On Friday October 13, 2017, the Nigerian Army commenced Exercise Crocodile Smile II in the following South-west and Niger Delta States: Lagos, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River.

The Exercise will span 3 Divisions of the Nigerian Army (2, 6 and 81 Divisions) and is in line with the 2017 Training Directives which aims at training troops in the conduct of Internal Security Operations in aid of Civil Authorities across the various formations’ areas of responsibilities, based on Constitutional provisions.

Why is Exercise Crocodile Smile II necessary?

1. Exercise Crocodile Smile II is designed to further the gains and consolidate on the successes of Exercise Crocodile Smile I.

2. Exercise Crocodile Smile II is also designed to leverage on real time intelligence to curtail insecurity, thereby fulfilling the Army’s training and
operational objectives.

3. Exercise Crocodile Smile II is necessary to tackle and curtail security challenges in the South West and Niger Delta, such as illegal oil bunkering,
pipeline vandalism, cultism, kidnapping, and militancy.

4. Exercise Crocodile Smile II provides an opportunity for Nigerian troops to sharpen their skills to cope with these security challenges within the
2, 6 and 81 Divisions’ Area of Responsibilities.

5. Exercise Crocodile Smile II is designed to complement Operation Python Dance II in the Southeast.

How long will Exercise Crocodile Smile II last?

The Exercise started on Friday October 13, 2017 and will last until Saturday October 28, 2017.

Exercise Crocodile Smile I was conducted within the Niger Delta States (Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Ondo) and Ogun, in late 2016.

This exercise has been hijacked by some criminal and corrupt elements. And their modus operand is for one of them to wear mufti covering military attire; be it under neat t-shirt or military cap and be collecting money from motorist on the highway. Especially at bad portion of lagos Abeaokuta road at joju bus stop. And to cap it they demand for money as if its their birthright. whoever is not ready to comply is beaten, harassed.

this is really sad. Now that soldiers has join join SARS around that axis claiming operation python dance, i wonder if things like this will not increase. i had an encounter with one of them yesterday while driving to lagos from toll gate. one of the soldier was making gesture that meant slow down to me, i complied and even stopped waiting for him to say something though i have passed him. after waiting for about 1 minute, i decide to keep driving. Then there was a bus blocking the way that made me stop again. then i saw the soldier coming towards me. i almost freak out wondering what have i don wrong. Then he caught up with me asking me why didnt i wait when he asked me to. Then i told him i thought he said i should slow down which i did and after waiting for him without him doing anything i moved.
at the end he said i can go. i wonder if he was drunk maybe the encounter would had been be different. anyways they should do quick and leave the road. Their sudden presence on the road is frighten.
