Nairaland GeneralRe: Brunel Shortlist 2018 Controversy: The Politics Of Being Too Black by Thandiubani(op): 10:00am On Mar 17, 2018
lalasticlala Seun ishilove please help me push this article to reach all those who can help correct this anomaly.
Nairaland GeneralBrunel Shortlist 2018 Controversy: The Politics Of Being Too Black by Thandiubani(op):
Over the years, I had thought that Brunel International African poetry prize was meant to project African voices in their raw awesomeness no matter which part of the world you live, without discrimination so far as you are African and the poems meet the required standard. But, events of the past few days have convinced me to believe that Brunel is a pseudo-African platform commercialised by blacks living in diaspora with a twisted view to ridicule, re-colonise and downgrade African writers domiciled in Africa.

If a poetry competition as Brunel (I had rated as impressive) stoops so low as to shortlist poems for its poetry prize not on the basis of excellence but who has had "access to a creative writing education and a literature development culture outside of the continent, especially in the US and UK", according to a statement by its founder, British-Nigerian writer Bernardino Evaristo, then African poetry is dead on arrival.

The popularization of the whacked mentality by Evaristo and to an extent, her judges that the so-called Africans exposed to creative writing education and literature development culture outside of the continent, especially in the US and UK are better off is not just a delirious thinking pattern but also an insult to all Africans living in Africa who have not left the continent before.

What it means in a layman's language is that a majority of African writers who are talented will be ignored for the fact that they are not privileged to have access to creative writing education abroad - they are considered inferior to their counterparts abroad. Those who live abroad and exposed to the 'almighty creative writing education' bla bla bla are chosen over their contemporaries who live in Africa.

And that is exactly what happened this year.

6 of the poets shortlisted this year do not live in Africa (and may never have stepped foot in the continent). For the remaining two: one lives in Cairo and studied at the University of Mississippi (she's got the abroad connection), while the other is a Nigerian (chosen obviously to save face).

This toxic reasoning introduced by the organisers who should know better might set off a catastrophic precedent for the future. When discrimination is spelt out openly in this fashion without remorse, it is a clarion call for all those living in Africa who have 'sense' to count their teeth with their tongues as you are now considered as second class contestants.

'Nwanne m, jiri ire gi guo eze gi onu'.

Evaristo has made it clear that Brunel is too big for African poets living in Africa as they are considered 'not good enough'.

Even if Brunel has now become a UK/US affair as the organisers want to make it seem, the transition should've taken a gradual process.

Moreover, this new trend will spell doom for the future of African literature as those given the mantle to represent Africa are nothing but pretenders who do not carry the conscience of Africa. This favouritism is unacceptable.

Betterstill, the organisers should create a competition only for people living in Africa, as this will see to it that African talents are given the recognition they deserve.

How do you call this 'Brunel International African poetry prize' and yet expect people who do not live or probably have not been to Africa before to tell the story of Africa (after reading books and watching movies innit?) from UK and US after muting the original voices of those who live in Africa? That is preposterous!

The name should be rightly changed to 'Brunel International poetry prize for Africans Living Abroad' to reflect its new role.

Again, how convenient was it for the organisers to have shortlisted 6 women for this year's prize? Out of all the thousands of applicants, only two men were considered worthy to be shortlisted. The gender bias by organisers of this poetry prize is a shameful attempt to favour a gender over another which no reasonable person can take.

Such discriminatory and unfair practice should have no place in a competition of this standard in this day and time.

If the table was to be turned, everyone would have run mad by now.

My advice to African poets living in Africa concerning Brunel is this: please stop wasting your time applying for Brunel poetry competition because you are seen as inferior just because you have not attended any creative writing education outside Africa.

Unless you know the judges or have someone within to fight your battle, then don't waste your time waiting for a Brunel miracle no matter how good you are. Well, if you think otherwise, goodluck to you.

If you have not traveled/studied outside of Africa, you are mostly considered incompetent and incapable of writing poetry to meet their standard. Of course that insinuation is dumb because many poets I know here are in a different class far above the writers of some of the tasteless poems shortlisted this year.

Evaristo owes all Africans in Africa an unreserved apology for the ludicrous, ill-informed and discriminatory statement (you can visit the Brunel page to read her full statement). If this issue is not addressed and apology tendered, I will write a protest letter to the Commonwealth Foundation for sponsoring such a dishonourably shameful campaign.

May we all be successful.

PoliticsHow Buhari Failed Millions Of His Supporters And Made Them Turn Against Him by Thandiubani(op):
President Muhammadu Buhari rode on the goodwill of millions of Nigerians to emerge as the 7th democratically elected President of Nigeria. The hope and optimism expressed by the people towards his change mantra was unprecedented.

Three years down the line, many of his supporters have been left disappointed, disillusioned and defeated by his woeful performance so far. Notable personalities like Olusegun Obasanjo, father Ejike Mbaka, Bisi Akande, Dele Momodu, Aisha Buhari (his wife) and many others who had in the past given their full support to his administration have expressed sadness over his inability to effect the change he promised. Even his wife Aisha publicly revealed that her husband's government has been hijacked by a powerful cabal who take decisions without his knowledge and input.

In October 2016, Aisha had raised alarm saying she will not support her husband's re-election bid because he was not in control of his government. In a BBC interview, Aisha Buhari suggested his government had been hijacked by only a "few people", who were behind presidential appointments.

She said the president did not know most of the officials he had appointed. It is two years since she made that statement and nothing has changed. She recently showed signs that her husband hasn't changed after she retweeted two video clips lambasting the President over his nonchalant attitude towards the massacre of Benue indigenes by Fulani herdsmen. If the President's wife can openly reject her husband, what do you expect from the poor masses who feel abandoned by Buhari?

The past three years have been one of mixed feelings. Buhari’s effort in tackling Boko Haram is undeniable, however, it has been mainly overshadowed by the military's false claims over and over again that it has defeated the terrorist group and killed its leader, Abubakar Shekau. Such blatant lies put the government of President Buhari in a very bad light as one fueled by media propaganda. The military was given 40 days to capture Shekau in late 2017, the days came and passed like any other day. The military nicely kept mute as Shekau appeared in videos taunting them. Boko Haram continues to claim more and more lives as it gets stronger and stronger. Over 300 of its captured members have been released by Buhari’s government. Yet, the government through its propaganda machine regale Nigerians with tales how the terrorists have been defeated. In spite of all this claim, the government has gone ahead to seek approval for $1 billion to be used in the fight against Boko Haram - a group the government claimed it had defeated on numerous occasions.

How Buhari failed his supporters
1. During his election campaign, President Buhari promised to give the power sector a total repackaging considering the outcry by millions who yearn for steady electricity supply for household and business consumption.

The government through its Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola claimed it has jerked up power supply from a mere 3000mw to 7000mw in October 2017. But the issue of electricity supply still remains a matter of the more you look the less you see.

Joy Ogaji, Executive Secretary of the Association of Power Generation Companies revealed that Transmission Companies in Nigeria can only distribute a capacity maximum of 5,500mw. Even at that, she believes the country has only been able to transmit a mere 4,500mw. What this means is that the government's claim of generating 7000mw of electricity is just a bogus statement to titillate the ears as millions of Nigerians will still sleep in darkness because only about 4500mw of electricity or less can be transmitted.

According to a World Bank 2017 report, 75 million Nigerians do not have access to electricity supply.

The Spectator Index of the world’s worst electricity supply in 2017 ranked Nigeria as the second worst electricity supply nation in the world. This was contained in a report it released in 2018.

Of the 137 countries examined in the report, Yemen ranked as worst electricity supply nations in 2017, followed by Nigeria, Haiti, Lebanon, and Malawi.

The claim by the government that it has improved power supply in the country can only be seen on paper as Nigerians are yet to witness any significant change. They sleep and wake up in darkness. Buhari’s government continues to make bogus claims on the pages of newspapers without anything to show for it.

2. Many of Buhari’s supporters especially those from Benue state have come to see the President as an ethnic warrior and a political bigot following his remarkable 'silence' while Fulani herdsmen murder, rape and massacre people in Agatu, Logo and Goma areas of Benue, including other parts of the country.

Buhari did not visit the people to console them after the massacre some weeks ago. He was totally nonchalant as he found it even difficult to condemn the killer herdsmen.

Buhari is viewed as a president who enjoys crushing any uprising from other ethnic groups with brutal force but romances the bums of his kinsmen who have raped, pillaged and massacred innocent villagers in hundreds.

Buhari’s reluctance to prosecute killer herdsmen has become a weakness too intolerable. 73 innocent villagers were brutally murdered in their sleep By Fulani herdsmen last three weeks, yet the government has not arrested let alone prosecuted them. The President instead of hunting down the killers had admonished Benue people who visited him in Abuja to accommodate the herdsmen. The Fulani herdsmen are viewed as an untouchable group that no matter what crime they commit, nothing can be done to them, that is why they fearlessly murder innocent people without security operatives making any arrest.

In 2015, Global Terrorism Index named Fulani militia as the fourth deadliest terror group in the world, yet Buhari’s government has consistently claimed that Fulani herdsmen are not terrorists. But each time they take their cows to graze in people's farms, those people end up dead. In February 2016, suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked a village in Agatu, Benue State and reportedly killed at least 300 people. They are yet to be arrested and prosecuted as I write.

These herdsmen attack helpless communities with Ak47 guns and other dangerous weapons without security operatives arresting them. They invade farms and ruin goods worth millions of naira. They murder and rape farmers who challenge them, yet President Buhari has not found it worthy to stop his killer kinsmen.

The failure of Buhari who is indirectly siding with his kinsmen has won him many enemies including those who supported him in 2015.

Buhari didn't waste time to deploy the army against the helpless Indigenous People of Biafra members protesting peacefully in the South East. They were dehumanised, murdered and killed by the men of the Nigerian army under Buhari’s order. These young IPOB members had no weapon but were declared a terrorist group by Buhari. IPOB didn't kill anyone, didn't rape anyone and didn't set communities ablaze.

But the murderous Fulani herdsmen who murder, rape and set communities ablaze are allowed to walk around free with the government defending them. One should not look far to see the reasons why many people have been left disappointed by Buhari.

3. Buhari has a history of sheepishly supporting those he feels are his own. When Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal was indicted by the Nigerian Senate over alleged breach of Nigerian laws in handling contracts awarded by the Presidential Initiative for the North East (PINE), President Buhari defended Mr. Lawal.

The ad-hoc committee on “mounting humanitarian crisis in the North East” led by Senator Shehu Sani had discovered that Mr. Lawal received N200 million contract to clear “invasive plant species” in Yobe State through a company, Rholavision Nigeria Limited.

The Senate asked for Lawal's suspension and sack. The Senate said Mr. Lawal remained a director of the company till September 2016, over a year after his appointment, in breach of Nigeria’s code of conduct for public officials as enshrined in the 1999 constitution.

Mr. Lawal denied the allegations, dismissed the Senate as saying “balderdash”, and accused the lawmakers of attempting “to bring him him down at all cost."

President Buhari defended Lawal and refused to sack him. However, after setting up a committee to probe Lawal, he had no option but to fire the loud-mouthed Lawal. The report of the probe headed by VP Osinbajo was never made public. Many of Buhari’s supporters are disappointed that he has the penchant for defending his own people even when it has been established that they are not innocent. Yet, he wastes no time in sending security operatives to harass and intimidate opposition party members 'accused' of corruption. It was under Buhari’s watch that men of the Department of State Security Services invaded the houses of Judges in gestapo style after they were accused of corruption. Some of the judges were acquitted, as the agencies rushed to arrest them without proper investigation. Too bad for a man said to be an anti-corruption czar.

In his three years as President, Buhari has been accused of surrounding himself with people of questionable character.

For instance, his Chief of Staff (CoS), Abba Kyari was accused of taking N500m from operators of MTN to help the telecommunications giant mitigate the fine imposed on it by the federal government, according to a Sahara Reporters investigation. Shockingly, the matter died a natural death.

Just recently, the Attorney-General of the federation and Minister of Justice, Ibrahim Malami was accused of secretly aiding the controversial reinstatement of embattled former head of Presidential task force on pension reform, Abdulrasheed Maina to the position of a director in the Ministry of Interior after he had been sacked by former President Goodluck Jonathan over allegations of fraud. Malami up till now still holds the view that he did the right thing. Instead of answering questions on his alleged role in the embarrassing incident, Malami ran to the court to get an ex parte order stopping the probe by the Senate Committee. If he is innocent, why run to court to stop the probe? These are the kind of people Buhari has surrounded himself with. People of questionable character.

On Wednesday, a sycophantic Minister was stopped from distributing Buhari's 2019 campaign materials during the Federal Executive meeting even when the President has not made his intention to re-contest in the 2019 Presidential election public. This is totally against the Independent National Electoral Commission's directive that no such thing should happen outside the calendar it gives for political campaigns. These are the type of charlatans Buhari has surrounded himself with without knowing that they are doing all these to consolidate their own individual interests. Yet, Buhari looks on like a kid who got lost in the market place.

4. Buhari has failed on his electoral promises. The President before the 2015 election had promised to ban all government officials from seeking medical care abroad in order to reduce government expenditure. He did ban government officials but flouted the ban himself. As a firsclass hypocrite, the President shocked the nation by spending over three months treating himself in London. While many cannot afford standard healthcare because of the abysmal condition of our hospitals in Nigeria, the President rushes to London for treatment at the mere sign of a cold. A leader who exhibits this kind of hypocrisy does not have the interest of his people at heart.

Buhari promised to create 720,000 jobs in the first year of his administration. It was Vice President who made this public in January of 2015. He had said that the government of Buhari had created plans to employ 20,000 young persons per state as such, urged people to vote them into power to actualize the grand plan. Apart from the N-power scheme which the government claims has employed about 200,000 graduates in late 2016 on a meagre N30,000 less than $150, there is nothing to show that the government is ready to redeem its pledge.

According to statistics released by the national Bureau of Statistics for the 4th quarter of 2016, about 3.67 million Nigerians lost their jobs under Buhari in 2016. Also, the number of unemployed Nigerians rose from 7.51 million at the beginning of October 2015 to 11.19 million at the end of September 2016.

The government is yet to create 20,000 jobs per state as it promised in 2015.

While Buhari's benefactors, media aides, advisers and people of interest continue to feed his ears with all what he wants to hear, millions of Nigerians have since realized that the Buhari they voted for in 2015 is not the same person in 2018. He promised them change, but gave them chains.

Buhari is preparing himself to be shocked the same way ex-President Goodluck Jonathan learnt that the voice of the people matters if he doesn't do something fast.

Never in the history of this country have we seen a president so clannish and unapologetically bigoted in his reasoning so much so that he set aside the federal character principle only to feed the whims of his kinsmen by using them to fill strategic positions of authority.

Buhari has handed Nigeria's security apparatus to his kinsmen. Does it mean there are no other people qualified from other ethnic groups to hold these positions other than his kinsmen from the north? Here is a summary of those holding strategic security positions appointed by Buhari:

Chief of Army Staff - Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai
National Intelligence Agency - Ahmed Rufa’i Abubakar
Nigeria Immigration Service - Muhammed Babandede
Minister of Defence - Mansur Dan-Ali
Nigeria Police Force - Ibrahim Idris
Director, Department of State Security Services - Lawal Daura
Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission - Ibrahim Magu
Nigeria Customs Service - Hammed Ali
Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps- Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu
Nigeria Prisons - Ahmed Ja'afaru

While Buhari continues to say that the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable, he has unwittingly been heating up the polity with his nepotic appointments. His inability to understand the dynamics of internal politics betrays recent insinuations that he's a true democrat.

Not only does he lack the intellectual clout to force the promised change, he doesn't possess the wherewithal to negotiate the country out of its latest economic and political quagmire.

5. Nigerians were sold a bait when the government selfishly and in a heartless manner removed fuel subsidy and hiked the price of petrol to N145 per litre. Buhari's government had sold millions of Nigerians the dummy line that removing subsidy would allow the government the ability to use the resources to develop the refineries, stop fuel scarcity and make fuel readily available for millions. It was a good script Nigerians in their numbers bought it. Sadly, the removal brought untold hardship on Nigerians, forcing goods and services to triple in price. People mourned, shouted, cried but the government promised them a sweeping change. The government said it was better for Nigerians to suffer its effect for a short time as things are likely to change. That was just another falsehood. Nothing has changed. The suffering has increased leaving many boiling with anger.

The Senate some weeks back were shocked to have discovered that the Buhari government is still paying fuel subsidy after it had told millions of Nigerians that subsidy had been removed. It means that the government is paying itself subsidy which it said it had removed. According to the Senate, the government-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation solely imported fuel last year and paid itself subsidy. This grand conspiracy the Senate said is an act of corruption, happened under Buhari’s nose.

Even with the removal of fuel subsidy and the hike of petrol to N145 per litre, Nigerians have been suffering since November as fuel scarcity crippled the nation even as I am writing today, there is still no fuel. Many people have been forced to buy fuel at N500 per litre at the black market.

This simply shows that Buhari is either an accomplice in this grand act to defraud Nigerians or he's not in charge of his government. Many Nigerians have been left disappointed by Buhari as he continues to prove that he was certainly ill-prepared for power.

6. The many gaffes of Buhari’s government has left many people wondering if this is the change they voted. If not for Obasanjo's scathing letter to Buhari, the push-around Economic and Financial Crime Commission wouldn't have realized that it was time to investigate and arrest disgraced Babachir Lawal months after he was sacked by Buhari.

Just the same way Buhari is expecting another letter from Obasanjo before he can punish high-ranking members of his cabinet who were complacent in the secret reinstatement of Abdulrasheed Maina.

What other grand way to show that Buhari is not in control than the epic appointment of dead persons into boards of government agencies. How irresponsible can this government be?!

It is over two years since men of the Nigeria Army following a minor dispute reportedly invaded the residence of El Zakzaky razing it down. Over 300 of his members were brutally murdered by soldiers according to reports, his children were killed before he alongside his wife were tortured and locked up in custody for over two years now. His religious members have protested and campaigned for his release endlessly, but instead have been hunted and attacked by security operatives. There is no freedom for Zakzaky and his wife at sight.

It is the same case for former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki who has been in detention for 3 years now. Even though he has been ordered to be released by the court, the government has refused to release him.

In conclusion, the general feeling of Nigerians towards the government of President Muhammadu is that of disenchantment. Many have been left totally disappointed with Buhari, even his die-hard supporters. The worst thing to have happened to Buhari is the sycophantic shouts of his numerous benefactors who have refused to allow him see and know what Nigerians feel about his government. They have continuously fed his ears with juicy stories about his performance so far which is totally false. They have continued to shout down on people expressing sincere opinions about the ills bedevilling Buhari’s government. These nitwits are all over social media praising Buhari even when he goes wrong.

Whether he listens or not to the words of wisdom, his fate will be ultimately sealed in less that a year and half, if he continues with this shambolic attitude. Even the blind can see that he plunged millions of Nigerians into poverty and suffering since he took over power more than 2 years ago. If he doesn't take a firm grip of his government, what happened to Goodluck Jonathan awaits him.

Two dreaded armed robbers have been caught after they broke into a wall to steal expensive phones from a businessman in Agbor area of Delta state.

Tori.NG gathered that the incident happened on the night of December 31st while the businessman and his family members were sleeping. They woke up on the 1st of January to behold the shock.

The businessman revealed that the armed robbers apart from stealing expensive phones also destroyed the show glass and other valuable properties in the shop. However, while they tried to forcefully open a safe in the shop, the armed robbers got injured with their blood splashed on the floor.

Expressing happiness to God for disgracing his enemies, the businessman said: 'God reveals to redeem for those that loves him. I am greatful Lord."

Also praising God for exposing their enemies, the businessman's sister added: "While men slept, they chose to go rob my brother's shop for the second time in 20 months!

They were bent on ruining his business again and their blood were spilled everywhere in the process.

Yesterday, they were caught and paraded round the town of Agbor. I'm so happy!

For all that was stolen, we are set to recover. Somebody praise God!"

FamilyMbaise Woman's Husband Was Given N800k Marriage List 10 Years Ago by Thandiubani(op): 5:51pm On Dec 15, 2017
As more and more people advocate for the abolition of the bride price, a Nigerian woman by name Vivian Emesaraonye Dimgba from Mbaise, Imo state today shocked many people after revealing that her husband was given a marriage list that was nearly N800,000.

The pretty woman who got married 10 years ago got people talking over the revelation. Gender equality advocates have called for the abolition of 'bride price' and 'marriage list' saying that it makes it look like the woman is nothing but an item for sale. Some say that bride price is not actually the problem, but the list which can drain a man's lifesaving.

Making the revelation, Dimgba wrote: "I'm from Mbaise.. The list alone cost close to 800k and that was my Dad being nice.
If only I knew then, what I know now.

Bride price is a stupid tradition that shouldn't have any place in a modern world. Whether 1 naira or 1 million.

Here is how Nigerians reacted:

Nairaland GeneralRe: Horrifying Police Experiences And The Execution Of Six Kidnappers By SARS by Thandiubani(op): 5:55pm On Nov 19, 2017
@Piero handsome, that's a nice observation. The problem with some youths is that they lay emphasis on very mundane things while neglecting the important things. No policeman has the right to kill a kidnapper or any human being without allowing the law to take due course (unless it was rightly proved he did such in self defence) If such a person is ever caught, he or she will be made to face the music. Many Nigerians don't know their right from left, so I don't blame them that much. That's why some erring police officers can commit a crime and foolishly boast about it. It's a shame.

Pierohandsome:
I posted a comment on this issue whn it first came to light as to why wil the police execute someone caught alive instead of following due process of proseciting such person. The reaction i got frm other people commenting left me in amazement, some called me an escaped kidnapper, others said i was part of the gang.
But the truth is that, the Nigeria police force is a product of the society. We cannot have a refined police institution until we have a society with refined youths with a civilised mindset. Those calling me names wil do same if they eventually become one. An institution is a product of people, whn wil Have a refined society with refined people ,we wil have a refined institution.
Nairaland GeneralHorrifying Police Experiences And The Execution Of Six Kidnappers By SARS by Thandiubani(op): 4:59pm On Nov 19, 2017
The Nigeria police is without doubt, a representation of the grave level of systematic rot in Nigeria. Many Nigerians have fallen victim to the unprofessional conduct of its poorly trained officers who use their position of authority as an opportunity to intimidate, harass and oppress innocent citizens.

Without mincing words, most of our police officers act like lunatics and worst still, they never obey the law. To them, anytime they put on the uniform, they become untouchable and above the law. You will see them drive against traffic with speed without considering the fate of other road users. They run a red light, brazenly collect bribe in the open and arrest innocent citizens just to extort money from them.

It came without an iota of surprise when a recent study revealed that the Nigeria police is the worst in the world. The 2016 report which was compiled by the World Internal Security and Police Index International, WISPI and released by the International Police Science Association, IPSA, and the Institute for Economics and Peace, categorically rated the Nigeria Police Force as the worst in the world.

Instead of the top echelon of the police to hide their faces in shame and find an understandable way out of the glaring mess, the police in its predictable nature regaled us with tales how it is the best in Africa.

As an ordinary citizen of Nigeria and having lived in this country for over 25 years, I can authoritatively tell you that the WISPI report is absolutely correct.

You do not need to look far to find justification for the such a rating. Be patient with me as I take you through some horrifying experiences Nigerians have passed through in the hands of daft and murderous police officers who no longer hide their evil from the public. These experiences are just a few in the list of many such uneventful cases.

On the 8th of November 2017, six alleged kidnappers were reportedly killed by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Cross River state command during a shootout.

The SARS team purportedly rescued the kidnap victim in Ikom local government area after a shootout that left the six kidnappers dead, according to reports.

Hear the Spokesperson of the command, ASP Irene Ugbo speaking on the incident as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria: "Our men today had an encounter with some kidnappers in Ikom local government area while trying to rescue an abducted woman in their captivity.

“During the process of rescuing the victim, the kidnappers engaged our men in an exchange of fire and we were able to rescue the woman while five of the kidnappers were shot dead.

“We also arrested two of the kidnappers and our men are bringing them down to Calabar as we speak,’’ she said.

From the above statement by Ugbo, it was established that 5 kidnappers didn't survive the shootout with the police, only two were taken alive. Investigation I carried out showed that six people and not five were executed by the police.

Photographic evidence by people present at the scene further revealed that the police lied blatantly that the alleged kidnappers died during a shootout.

In fact, there was no shootout in the first place. The alleged kidnappers were reportedly murdered in cold blood by police officers.

Information gathered from an eyewitness revealed that the alleged kidnappers were alive when they were arrested by the police and taken into custody. Also, photo showed the alleged kidnappers numbering at least four climbing into the police van while being handcuffed. THEY WERE NOT KILLED DURING A SHOOTOUT!

Another photo also showed the alleged kidnappers at a place believed to be the police station in handcuffs before they were executed.

It is imperative to note that the police lied when it said the alleged kidnappers were killed during a shootout. It is also worthy to note that the alleged kidnappers were stripped and handcuffed before being bundled into the police van ALIVE, so there was no way they could have died in a shootout as they were seen ALIVE while entering the back of the police car and had no access to any gun.

The plan by the police to cover up the extrajudicial execution of suspects is a great shame showing how low our institutions have become.

With the above points made, it is lame of the police Spokesperson to have come out in public with a false statement to cover the tracks of its murderous officers instead of making them face the music for such a horrendous crime. No police officer has the right to take the life of a suspect in their custody without allowing the law take its due course.

Such blatant disregard for the rule of law and many other unprofessional conducts have brought ridicule to the image of the police giving its ill-informed officers the impetus to carry on with such unjustified killings because they are bound to go scot-free. Such a shame the police has become!

As a matter of fact, the police hierarchy must move fast to arrest the erring officers who participated in this extrajudicial killing in Akwa Ibom. Investigation into
this incident must be conducted in a thorough manner. Gone are the days when such impunity is allowed to fester. If the police is serious to make a name for itself in Africa and the world, it must stand up to the call and take the bull by the horn and do away with bad eggs in its rank and file. If the police pay deaf ear to this call, then it stands to be disgraced soon.

On the 13th of November 2017, a police officer was caught on camera fighting a protesting student of the Federal College of Education, Ibadan with an axe. The incident happened while the students were protesting over the closure of their school. In saner climes, police presence at rallies is to guide and make sure the protesters follow due process of the law.

But in Nigeria, the half-baked police officers will foolishly attack peaceful protesters with live bullets and teargas. Policemen in Nigeria act like street urchins; they do not even know the law.

It is a really sad thing to see a police officer who should be held in high regard as a custodian of the law acting like a 'motor park agbero.' Policemen in Nigeria act like people with a brain the size of a lizard. Tell me, how can a police officer take his gun to a welder for repairs? But that was what a Nigerian police officer was caught doing recently. The system has been bastardized.

Back to the student protesters in Ibadan, Prof. James Adediran, the Executive Director of Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Ibadan (IAR&T) whose institution shares same location with the College accused overzealous policemen attached to the Oyo State Police Command of shooting two members of staff of the institute after they were drafted to quell the students during a protest. But the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abiodun Odude, denied it. He said the police didn't fire a single shot but instead used teargas to disperse the protesting students.

Hear him: "Police fired teargas to push the students to the extreme and were able to arrest some of the students that threw the stones. There was no gun shot,’’ Odude said.

What a blatant lie! A video of the clash showed police officers shooting to disperse the protesters. Empty gun shells were also recovered at the scene of the incident. Considering this ugly trend by the police to deny the irresponsible conduct of its officers, it is very obvious that the police will remain the worst in the world for a long time.

In the middle of October this year, four SARS officers were arrested in Kwara state after they reportedly sexually harassed a young Nigerian woman by name Kachi Anifela Zion to the extent of inserting their filthy fingers into her privates. The officers had accused her of being a prostitute before going ahead to handle her privates while searching her. What became of the investigation is unknown as the police as I learnt is yet to make it public its finding.

A member of the Nigerian Merchant Navy, Ay Suave shocked many people when he narrated the traumating ordeal he passed through in the hands of shameless police officers who bundled him into their van before assaulting and dumping him in their cell for absolutely committing no crime. Yet the hierarchy of the police will read and hear these horrifying and still remain adamant to investigate and bring these bad eggs to book. Yet, they will in a moronic manner come up with excuses when they are rated as the worst in the world.

Some days ago, a video of a SARS officer pointing gun at two residents of Ogun state threatening to shoot and 'throwa their bodies without anything happening to him' left many of our dead ancestors turning in their graves. Those are the kind of police officers we have in Nigeria.

With such reckless display of stupidity, nothing has happened to the officer who is now a threat to the citizens he's supposed to protect.

It was in this same vein that men of the Nigeria police in an extrajudicial manner, executed supporters of Mohammed Yusuf which gave birth to one of the deadliest terror groups in the world. The same line is being followed by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari whose record for flagrant disobedience to rule of law is legendary as he has for nearly 2 years now held the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibrahim Yaqoub El Zakzaky in custody.

El Zakzaky's wife and sons were among many of the sect members brutally murdered by the Nigerian army who laid seige at the sect's enclave in 2015. Many court orders asking for El Zakzaky's release never saw the light of the day.

In conclusion, it is pertinent at this time that men of the Nigeria police rise up to the occasion and be counted as worthy public servants. These cases and future ones to be brought up against the police must be handled with all manner of seriousness if the police is to be recognised as truly relevant and held in high esteem by the people.

It must henceforth, be transparent in all its activities. I know the Nigeria police can do better to become that public servant we all will be proud of. Only time will tell.

I do not know why some people want to masturbate themselves to death on this post. Osinbajo goofed and I did the right thing to set the records straight. Even if he apologised in two or three lines as I saw in the tweet (which didn't even come from him), it is still the duty of journalists to inform the public.

obailala, do you know how many millions of people his false, deceptive and politically-skewed statement deceived? Did he do the needful by using such medium as the one he used to publicise his false information to apologise for his epic gaffe? Cut me some slack boy, stop ventilating on my post and learn how to hold political office holders accountable by presenting issues the way it should be even if you are being paid to lie to yourself. Osinbajo's speech was a political statement meant to persuade voters to vote for a party that is filled with liars who are not even pricked by their own shameful conduct.

Some ruminants have gone to market to publicize the amount as yet another achievement of the APC, heaping praises on Osinbajo while relying on a false figure. One was here shouting like a sick giraffe.

For the avoidance of doubt, Osinbajo didn't clarify the issue almost immediately, and neither did he do it 'midnight of the same day as you claimed'. Stop the lies! It is really lame of you to try to play down this incident without considering the damage it has done to the gullible set that have been misinformed by Osinbajo.

Announcing $2bn for 2nd Niger bridge, my mistake —Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has admitted that he made a mistake in announcing the sum of $2 billion as the money released by the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) for the implementation of the second Niger bridge.

He said in Abuja on Tuesday that he actually meant to say N2 billion while speaking during the flag off of the All Progressive Congress (APC) gubernatorial campaign in Anambra State recently.

According to a statement issued by his spokesman, Laolu Akande, the Vice President “misplaced the figures.”

The statement said: “During the APC Governorship campaign flag-off in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Friday, October 20, 2017, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, had reiterated the Buhari administration’s commitment to keeping its promises to the Nigerian people.

“One of these promises is the construction of the second Niger Bridge.

“In the official press release I sent on the Vice President’s remarks during the campaign rally in Onitsha that same day, I did quote the VP as saying that ‘the Sovereign Wealth Fund paid N2 billion for that same project (Sum paid to the contractor: Julius Berger for early works). We will definitely see our second Niger Bridge, we will not make promises we cannot keep.’

“However, a short video clip from the event captured on the news segment of a television channel quoted Prof. Osinbajo as mentioning ‘$2bn’ and not ‘N2bn,’ which was what he had actually meant to say. Mentioning the dollar currency was inadvertent.

“As it happened, the excerpt from the video, which was shared online, was what was quoted in the headlines of some media houses, and in comments on social media.

“The figures were misplaced. Kindly set the records straight, from the speech I had sent.

“It is also pertinent to state that the highlight of the rally and Prof. Osinbajo’s remarks was the commitment of this administration to improve the country’s transportation network and economy.”

On Friday while campaigning for the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Anambra state, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo made a bogus claim that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government through Nigeria's Sovereign Wealth Fund paid a whopping $2billion for the Second Niger Bridge.

Here are the facts:
The Second Niger Bridge was awarded to Julius Berger in 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan at the cost of N177 billion. The contract was based on a Public-Private Partnership arrangement.

Julius Berger‎ is to work on the project on the basis of Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT), at a total cost of N108 billion. The money was reduced from an initial cost of N138 billion down to N108 billion by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

The Federal Government is to contribute N30 billion (28%) of the project cost. The remaining 72% will be raised by Julius Berger.

The project, which is divided into three phases, will bypass Onitsha and Asaba to connect the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway at Nkwerre-Ezunaka, and then cross Atani to the Asaba-Benin Expressway at Okpanam with a total length of 44 kilometres.

Note that the entire Second Niger Bridge project is to cost N108 billion after the review by the BPP.

Osinbajo's claim
"In fact, I am being reminded that just two days ago, the Sovereign Wealth Fund paid$2billion for that same project [Second Niger Bridge ]. So we will definitely see our Second Niger Bridge. We will not make promises we cannot keep.” VP Osinbajo said on Friday in Anambra.

The claim by Osinbajo is not just false, but also very deceptive. It can best be described as a political statement meant to deceive those clamouring for the construction of a bridge that was awarded in 2014 which has now become a subject for political campaigns.

First and foremost, there is no way $2billion translating to N712 billion can be spent on a project that was awarded for N108 billion. If we are to go by Osinbajo's statement, it means that the project will gulp an additional N604 billion apart from the contracted amount.

It is either Osinbajo didn't know what he was saying or he intentionally decided to mislead Nigerians on national television to create the impression that the Buhari-led government has the interest of people from the region at heart.

Another fact:
As at September 2017, Nigeria’s Sovereign Wealth fund stood at $2billion, according to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority, NSIA, Uche Orji in a report by Bloomberg.

So, it is preposterous to say that the government released $2billion for the Second Niger Bridge which is the exact amount in the SWF account.

In June 2017, the Chairman Committee on Media and Publicity in the House of Representatives, Rep. Abdulrazak Namdas revealed that the Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Mr. Babatunde Fashola refused to spend a Kobo out of N12 billion appropriated for the Second Niger Bridge in the 2016 budget.

Conclusion
It is clear that Osinbajo's statement is absolutely false. It should be disregarded. Three years since the contract was awarded by Jonathan's administration after boasting to complete the bridge in 48 months, the completion of the bridge seems far-fetched.

‎The reality at hand shows that the bridge may likely be completed in 2020, according to Orji.

PoliticsRe: Nnamdi Kanu: A Hero, Coward Or Villian? by Thandiubani(op): 6:39pm On Oct 08, 2017
lalasticlala Seun ishilove
FP please. Let Nigerians read and learn.
PoliticsNnamdi Kanu: A Hero, Coward Or Villian? by Thandiubani(op):
Love or loathe him, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the indigenous people of Biafra has gained himself a considerable political mileage in the south-eastern part of the country since his grandiose release from prison.

Since resurrecting the Biafra spirit, Kanu and his separatist agitators have been a thorn in the flesh of the government who strongly opposed ideas capable of causing the balkanization of Nigeria. Obviously, his separatist adventures gave impetus to the renewed call for restructuring after the move was unceremoniously thrown out of the National Assembly by lawmakers who are not in sync with the needs and aspirations of the masses.

Prior to October 14 2015, the name Kanu had an unfamiliar tone many people did not recognise and cared less about. But, the government of President Muhammadu Buhari through a combination of political immaturity and overzealous desire to gag him inadvertently thrust him into political limelight by incarcerating him for 2 years, thus giving him an undeserving political relevance and national prominence.

Many from his ethnic group saw his arrest as a continuation of Buhari’s personal vendetta against south-easterners especially after the President had immaturely exposed his divisive mindset during a speech at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) on July 22nd when he openly said he would treat those who voted him into power differently from those who didn't vote for him.

“I hope you have a copy of the election results. The constituents, for example, gave me 97% [of the vote] cannot in all honesty be treated on some issues with constituencies that gave me 5%.”

“I think these are political reality,” Buhari goofed.

As a result, Kanu's arrest on the 14th of October 2015, instead of being seen as a positive step taken by the government to tackle a loose canon, his arrest was perceived as a political fight against the Igbos, thus heightening tension in the country with thousands of his followers demonstrating for nearly two years forcing the government to release him.

The once unknown Kanu before our very before metamorphosed into a regional leader so powerful that his words were followed religiously. Many of his followers kowtowed in reverence before their hero - the man who resurrected the spirit of Biafra like never before since the days of Odumegwu Ojukwu.

To the government of Buhari, Kanu was an unrepentant villian desperately Hot for attention. He was seen as a loud mouth, a propagator of hate speech and nothing from his mouth was worth listening to as far as it would mean dividing the country. The All Progressives Congress-led government did not for once stop to consider what could have renewed the call for Biafra.

While passing Kanu off as another divisive tool by the opposition to derail its government, the APC-led government failed to see how its policies and failure to run an all-inclusive government brought division among the ethnic groups in the country - and not to talk of its failure to keep to its campaign promises. Buhari unlike any other Nigerian President was insensitive to Nigeria's diversity and constitution when he unwittingly filled his cabinet with his northern kinsmen to the disadvantage of other ethnic groups especially the south-east.

Not just that, he did far worse things.

The three presidents before Buhari (Olusegun Obasanjo, Musa Yar'Adua and Goodluck Jonathan) ran an all-inclusive government where the ethnic groups were represented well in government. Buhari touted as an ethnic bigot did the opposite. For instance, the country's six service chiefs are made up of four northerners, then one each from west and south-south respectively. Conspicuously, no military man of igbo extraction (south-east) was worthy to be given a relevant position by Buhari.

The names of the service chiefs are: Major-General Abayomi Gabriel Olonishakin as Chief of Defence Staff (west); Major-General T.Y. Buratai as Chief of Army Staff (north); Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as Chief of Naval Staff (south-south); Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff (north); Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Saliu Usman as Chief of Defence Intelligence (north) and Retired Major-General Babagana Monguno as National Security Adviser (north).

The north holds the leadership positions of the National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Air Staff, Chief of Defence Intelligence, National security adviser, Director-General of State Security Services, Comptroller-General of Nigerian Customs Service, Comptroller-General of Nigerian Immigration Service, Chairmanship of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission etc.

By this act, President Buhari showed himself not just as a nepotic fellow but ranks number one as Nigeria's most divisive president who flagrantly neglected the constitution's federal character principle in section 14 (3) of the 1999 constitution to pursue his own ethnic agenda. His policies instead of uniting Nigerians have become tools sparking separatist agitations.

Buhari's ministerial and non-ministerial list set the tone for his nepotic overtures with northerners in clear majority leaving people from other ethnic groups to wonder if they are still part of the country. People from other ethnic groups were considered 'not-good-enough' as Buhari continued his nepotic agenda.

Just some weeks back, there was an uproar when it was discovered that recent appointments into top management positions at the country-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation was dominated by northerners.

Out of the 15 new directors, 10 (67 percent) came from the mostly Hausa-Fulani North; three Yorubas; two from the South-South. But none from the South-East.

Many wondered why the north should have 10 top directors out of 15 newly appointed directors when they contribute not even a drop of oil at the detriment of the people from whose region the oil is gotten. The divisive nature of Buhari’s appointments have shown his inability to comprehend the dynamics of nation-building. Sadly, Buhari is the only President I know in Nigeria's regrettable history who is desperately convinced in his mind that people from his own region are superior to others from the other ethnic groups considering the manner he is going with his appointments. The reason for such shallow thinking is unknown.

The government's inability and excuses not to tackle the horror and nightmare visited upon Nigerians by dreaded Fulani herdsmen who invade villages raping, maiming and killing innocent people is a betray too many.

While the herdsmen are given preferential treatment and all manner of excuses made up for them, victims of the massacre are left to count their loss. The sluggish approach by government to tackle these herdsmen who go about with AK47 machine guns and other dangerous weapons is a serious indictment on Buhari who many believe is afraid to call his Fulani brothers to order. The slaughter of innocent villagers in Agatu, Ekiti, Imo, Enugu, Anambra and other states in the country with the government staring aimlessly at the bereaved families is totally regrettable.

How do you expect to have a united country when laws are applied to a particular group while another group can flout it without consequences simply because they are the President's kinsmen?

Recently, a video showing soldiers forcing IPOB members to swim in dirty mud water - something clearly against the rules of engagement - has since been thrown into the archives with the military busy issuing irrelevant statements like a radio station. The conduct of the government, its arms and agencies have reflected negatively in drumming home the idea of a united Nigeria.

Frankly, the methods adopted by Kanu (hate speech, violence and blocking of roads) to drive home his points are faulty. There is need to restrategize to avoid loss of innocent lives. It is true that Biafra is a spirit and no matter how many Kanus are killed, a million of him will emerge so far as the people are marginalized as has been the case with Buhari’s administration. It is very important that the agitation follow constitutional means via a referendum.

The government must know that trying to force Igbos to be a part of Nigeria by FORCE and the senseless use of the army to shed innocent blood will only fill the hearts of the people from the region with deep hatred that will one day bring the nation to its knees. You do not kill a people agitating for their right, label them terrorists in a bid to commit wanton atrocities and expect them to keep shut. One day, the victims will rise against the oppressor in a far more brutal way. That is why dialogue and not force is the best formula used in settling political differences. Unlike the latter, the former does not drink unnecessary blood.

No matter what you make of Kanu and his IPOB members, Nigerians must tell themselves the truth: the agitation in the different parts of Nigeria is because of a systematic failure of governance. The political elite since independence have profited from the country's resources at the detriment of the masses. From North, West to the East and South, it has been the same shameful story of corruption, maladministration and massive looting of our resources. The uprising we see today happen because of disenchantment from the masses, lack of infrastructural development, bad leadership and abuse of power. The people are tired of being used as pawns.

In fact, the political elite have so divided Nigerians with their inefficiency, corrupt mind and harebrained policies that for the past 57 years, it has been disaster all through.

For 57 sad years now, Nigerians have never had the privilege of enjoying steady power supply for straight 3 days. Never! While the political class buy the latest generating set for uninterrupted power supply, the masses sleep in mosquito-infested rooms dying of heat. After seeing all these, why will people not agitate? Nigeria is a mess and we all are drowning in it. A rubbish country dominated by a shameless political class. A country where most political office holders are indicted and even found guilty of stealing money meant for infrastructural development, yet such idiotic individuals have the guts to front themselves in public spaces looking for political relevance.

The call by Buhari that Nigeria's unity is sacrosanct is not out of love but because of the oil from the south which has sustained states in the country for years. If Nigeria must remain as one, then the government must as a matter of urgency consider calls for restructuring of the country which has gained positive momentum. The backwardness of the country cannot be detached from this pseudo-federalism we are practicing. There is need for economic empowerment of states to control their own resources and use it in providing the much needed dividends for the people. The time to restructure the country is now to avoid terrible consequences in the future.

The government must be made to understand that by sending armed soldiers to kill IPOB members after labeling them terrorists, it is preparing the ground for a more rebellious agitation that might not be peaceful. That could be a precursor to more damning consequences to come should peace and dialogue not be followed.

To the average south-easterner, Nnamdi Kanu is a hero - the man who could not watch while the cowardly leaders of the region sat akimbo while the south is marginalized by a nepotic President. Even though the tactics he employed are crude, Kanu has resurrected the consciousness of his people to the fact that they are also stakeholders in the country called Nigeria.
