You should read to understand na.

I called for it to be abolished because it is unjust to ask a married woman to remain faithful to her husband while the same tradition allows the husband to sleep around. Reason am na.

So you want to be sleeping around but doesn't want your wife to sleep around. That's selfishness of the highest order. Evil tradition.

StPete:
Cheating has become so rampant that I don’t think this holds water any longer. And I wonder why the OP is even calling for the abolishment of the law/curse. Have you been sleeping with another man’s wife?

Don’t forget that the traditional African man is allowed to marry more than one wife unlike a woman marrying more than one husband, so I support the complete sustenance of these curses to help curb the rising infidelities in modern homes across Nigeria.

Yes. There is always a first time and that's why I said some communities. It's a practice common among the Urhobo people of Delta state.

Irorobeje Monday wrote it in his reseaerch work: Adultery in Urhobo and The Principle of Utility. It's available online.

enm:
For instance, some communities require that you pay back not just the bride price, but also the monies spent on the traditional wedding when a woman cheats on her husband if she doesn't want to continue with the marriage anymore.

This is the first time i will be reading or hear about this. All i know is that the only thing return is the bride price to indicate a divorce and free the from any cause as a result of sleeping with other men. Also know a widow who want to remarry will need to return the bride price first.

Returning of all expenses during the traditional marriage is what i don't know of. Please which community practice this?

You are right.

ogorwyne:
I remember passing a compound some years ago in the village and I saw plenty leaves on the ground in a particular compound, lots of it. Lots of people gathered because the house was not fenced. In fact the family did not even try to make it a hidden affair, people were even watching from the window.

I got home and I told my mom, she told me a woman must be undergoing cleansing for committing adultery.

From what she said, the offender would be unclad, while the old/mature women in her family would be the ones to perform the cleansing. Momsi said those women would use those leaves to flog-flog her in her v-junction. After the indoor cleansing, the woman would pack those plenty leaves on her own to the community 'bury-ground' with a basin. She goes on subsequent trips to the Bush till the place is clean.

I also know of a woman who lost her first son on the day of her husband's burial. Last last village people said it was because of infidelity. A cleansing had to be done for the sake of her other kids.

You are mistaken. It actually does. Some have shared their experiences with me how the tradition stopped them. The fear of what will come upon them is enough to stop some. But, there are still hardened ones who don't care.

lefulefu:
All these will not stop a married woman who wants to cheat to cheat. Not only deltans have this type of culture on marriage infidelity. Other groups in nigeria also have it but it does not stop a married woman who wants to have sexual flings to have sexual flings.

"after trying to understand the thoughts of the ancestors or trying to understand where they were coming from before enacting such practice" Maybe, you can help me understand too. There is no excuse for this tradition. It should be abolished.

Traditional African marriage is not all about paying 'bride price'. Bride price is just one out of a list of many other things one is expected to fulfill. I don't know if you understand. For instance, some communities require that you pay back not just the bride price, but also the monies spent on the traditional wedding when a woman cheats on her husband if she doesn't want to continue with the marriage anymore. I added 'traditionally married' to encompass that idea too.

enm:
The term traditionally married and bride price paid should not be used together here it can lead to confusion. The major factor here is the bride price and nothing more, once a lady family accept her bride price everything fall in place.

I can understand your feeling or reaction toward this practice because i was once in your shoe too. To me what is good for the goose is also good for the geese too, but after trying to understand the thoughts of the ancestors or trying to understand where they were coming from before enacting such practice, i became weak and surrender. You see in my effort i asked an elder and he said that it was necessary so as to curtail disunity in the society then as everybody knew each other as it was a small society and an act like a married woman cheating can cause unpalatable issues in the society then.

Ndigbo And Stupidity: Why Is Remembrance Of Loved Ones Who Died In The Biafran War A Crime?

Social and political commentator, Alexander Thandi Ubani writes about remembering Biafrans who died over 50 years ago.

It is with a broken heart that I write this article as a mist of disappoint trickles down my face to my neck. I wonder when Ndigbo will ever get it right.

It is over 50 years since our loved ones were massacred before and during the war by marauding Nigerian forces because they asked for independence, yet not even one Igbo leader has the courage to stand up for the millions of dead Biafran souls by calling for a day to be set aside for their remembrance.

Shame on all of us, especially our senseless leaders who have misplaced the priorities for which Chineke brought them to life. Shame on all our governors, members of the senate and house of representatives, including other top government officials in the federal and state level, who have failed to stand up for the souls of their loved ones who died during the Biafran war.

What will it cost to officially set aside a day for all of us to honour the dead, remember our loved ones and extol the qualities for which we are known? Our loved ones who died in the war continue to turn in their graves due to this injustice.

Even if the federal government fails to remember, must we also dance the dance of stupidity with them. I see states in the southeast set aside a day or two for inconsequential celebrations/events, yet fail to remember their loved ones killed during the Biafran war. No wonder we have made no progress in Nigeria.

Governors have come and gone, yet none have been able to muster the courage to liaise with other governors to officially set aside a day across all the southeast states for a befitting commemoration in honour of all those who died during the Biafran war. I ask again: what will it cost if all southern states set aside a memorial day for such worthy cause? What will it cost, my people? What!!

How can we live as a people not knowing our past. A people without a sense of history leaves behind a generation without an identity. We beg to be allowed to remember our dead loved ones with security operatives threatening to kill us for making such pronouncements. Such threats from security operatives is indeed an insult to the memory of our loved ones who died during the war. What effrontery on the part of the same state that perpetuated this evil deed against our people.

For more than 2 years, our loved ones fought tooth and nail for what they believed in. 2 million Innocent Biafrans died as a result of blockade by Nigerian forces, yet some do not care to remember. It is the plan of the government for our people not to remember. But they have failed. We will never forget.

The propaganda machines of the government went to market on 30th of May, 2019 with reports telling us that the sit-at-home order by the indigenous people of Biafra failed. Even the government is desperate to make us forget our history.

I shiver to believe that we have become this divided as a people. Everyone from the south was affected by the mass murder of our loved ones. It was a marathon bloodletting whether you are: Ijaw, itsekiri, Urhobo, Ibibio, Igbo etc, they just didn't care. All of us were affected. Yet, some people from the south-south on social media will pretend like they do not care about what happened. If they choose to forget, we will always remember.

While our elite speak 'big grammar', ride in luxury cars, loot our money and spend years representing their pockets in Abuja, we the people must never forget. A day shall come when our leaders shall look for their houses and will not see it any more and we shall ask back all what they have denied and stolen from us, including our history.

As a matter of urgency, all governors of the south must rise from their slumber and come together to officially set aside a day for the remembrance of our brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers and children massacred during the war.

We must rise against the government agents trying to ridicule our conscience, history and life. The sacrifice and the suffering our people passed through, fighting for their lives and future of their children must never be forgotten.

We must never forget!

The Truth About Delta Tradition That Forbids Married Women From Cheating On Their Husbands Or Die (Part 2)

Social and political commentator, Alexander Thandi Ubani has thrown more light on the controversial tradition in Delta that forbids women from cheating or face severe consequences.

After obtaining more information from credible sources, I have decided to add additional information to my first article - The Truth About Delta Tradition That Forbids Married Women From Cheating On Their Husbands Or Die (Please Read Here).

In my quest to help many people who are unaware or may have been misinformed about the tradition In Delta state that forbids a woman from cheating on her husband practiced mainly by the Aniomas, Isokos and Urhobos of Delta state, I have decided to write a part two that will provide more clarification to the previous submissions I made about the tradition.

As I had stated in my previous article, the practice is still very much obtainable in these areas. A woman married to a man from any of these places is forbidden to have sexual intercourse with a man who is not her husband. Failure to adhere to this tradition results in severe consequences for the woman and her family as she will bring a curse upon her household.

This curse is only valid if the woman is traditionally married to a man from Anioma, Isoko or Urhobo of Delta state and her bride price duly paid. The Itsekiris as I have been informed are exempted. If her bride price has not been paid, the curse has no effect on her.

If her husband is a non-indigene of Delta and doesn't belong to any of the communities mentioned above, the curse/tradition cannot affect her even if she cheats on her husband.

Edited: Here are some traditional facts you must know:

1). In some parts of Delta, the curse is commonly referred to as Ishi/Ishia Ishi - confession of infidelity.

2). For the curse to befall a woman who cheated, the husband must be Isoko, Urhobo or from any of the communities in Anioma - Ukwuani, Enu-Ani (Ibusa, Ogwashi-Uku, Asaba, parts of Igbodo, Ilah, Isseles, Idumujes, Onichas etc); Ika (Agbor, Umunede, Owas etc) and Aboh.

3). This custom applies only if the woman is traditionally married and her bride price paid. So, if her bride price has not been paid, nothing will happen to her if she cheats.

4). The curse only affects the husband if he is aware of the wife's infidelity, covers up for her and continues to eat her food. If the husband is not aware of his wife's infidelity, the curse will not affect him.

5). If the woman is married to an Isoko or Urhobo man and cheats, her children will fall sick and die. She also dies if she still refuses to confess.

6). If she's married to a man from Anioma and cheats, her children will fall sick and die. The woman is also at the risk of losing her life. If she's pregnant, the curse will force her to undergo cesarean operation and may die during childbirth.

7). If she survives childbirth, the child will not accept breast feeding from her but will accept from any other woman. It is at this point that the elders will start to interrogate the woman to know if she cheated on the husband.

8. If she is not breast feeding, the last child will suddenly develop illness and stop accepting food prepared by her until the child finally dies.

9). The sudden refusal of food by her child is usually a signal to the family that the woman might have cheated on the husband, and it's at this point that the family will start investigation to ascertain the truth. If she refuses to confess, she too will fall sick and die.

10). In some cases, if the woman runs away after cheating, and moves on with another man other than her husband, the curse will force her to remain barren until she dies mysteriously, unless she returns her bride price.

11). The only one totally free from the curse is the man or men the wife cheats with.

12). If the husband is aware of the wife's infidelity and tries to cover it up, he will be struck with swollen belly and legs.

13). The curse does not affect a woman from any part of Delta state married to a non-indigene of Delta state. It affects only women married to an indigene of any of the above mentioned communities.

14). The curse is also applicable to a woman from Delta married to a man from Delta belonging to any of the communities.

15). If she confesses, in some instances, she's expected to task the men she has been sleeping with - if they are reachable - to contribute for the ritual
to avert the curse on her family. If they are not reachable, she carries the burden all alone.

16). For the curse to be averted, the woman must confess and perform rituals to free her husband and children.

17). As part of the cleansing ritual, the woman will be flogged with a particular leaf and caused to strip naked before the family elders.

18). This is the reason most women from Delta prefer to marry non-Deltans.

19). The easiest way to be free from the curse for any woman is to return her bride-price.

20) In Urhobo culture, a married man can only be accused of committing adultery if he sleeps with a married woman - even at that, nothing happens to him if he is not caught. When he is caught, he is forced to pay a fine.

21). The man is allowed to sleep with any single woman he likes.

22). A man who is notorious for sleeping with people's wives instead of receiving the same punishment as that given to the woman is rather cursed and banished from the village.

My submission:

This tradition is ridiculous. It tends to curb infidelity using a discriminatory method. It specifically targets the women while giving a free pass for the men. It is as though the gods see men as a special kind of breed while the women are antagonized and chained to submission. This is unjust.

Irrespective of how we try to justify this tradition, it is totally against the principle of equity and justice. It is an unfair, unjust and a hostile tradition meant to keep women at bay while granting freedom to the men.

Without mincing words, fidelity in marriage should be a virtue expected from the man and woman. Demanding fidelity from a married woman while the man is allowed to dip his phallus in any available opening is not only wicked, but also an atrocity that must be stopped.

This tradition must be abolished.

it is not that i am a traditionalist.

I am of the view that before one makes any assertion or conclusion he or she must have gotten one or two evidences to straighten or hold your conclusion.

From your write up, it is based on an opinion which is substantial by the point of partiality( that is allowing men to cheat and not allowing women), that the tradition is should be impartial.

The tradition is partial is not enough proof that it is false like you made it to look.

It is FALSE when you have seen a married woman from anioma cheat without any thing happening to the husband or children.
The issue is have you seen one? You can start your research from there.
If a woman from Anioma cheats, nothing will happen to her if she's married to a man from a different state.

PoliticsWhy Igbos Must Produce The Next President In 2023 by Thandiubani(op): 5:44pm On May 19, 2019
The Igbos have long been marginalized in Nigeria's political equation and must come 2023 produce the next president, writes Alexander Thandi Ubani.

Since the beginning of Nigeria's fourth republic in 1999, no Igbo man or woman has ever been elevated to the position of President or Vice President of Nigeria. From 1999 till date, the country has been ruled by a Yoruba man for 8 years (Olusegun Obasanjo), Ijaw man for 4 years + (Goodluck Jonathan) and Hausa/Fulani for 7 years and counting (Umaru Musa Yar'Adua & Muhammadu Buhari). It is like a grand plan is in place to shut out the Igbos from ascending to these two elevated positions.

If truth must be told, this aspect of our political history is one of the many reasons there is serious distrust and bad blood between the Igbos and the two other major ethnic groups in the country.

There is no gainsaying the fact that when a heterogeneous country like Nigeria marginalizes one of the biggest ethnic groups in the country using bitter political maneuverings, it is preparing itself for a catastrophic implosion.

We pray and sing 'one nation bound in freedom, peace and unity' in our national anthem, yet we continue to undermine it through calculated political misgivings. For instance, Buhari's four years as President (2016-2019) has so far been characterized by a highly ethnic-bigoted appointments which caused serious friction in the polity. Although he argued that his decision was as a result of the number of votes he got from the south in 2015 election, such thinking to say the least, is primitive. Without mincing words, this bitter political scheme watered the ground for serious ethnic disharmony. Many felt that other ethnic groups were purposely left out by his government because the North has a hidden agenda it is yet to achieve.

The bitterness existing between the three major ethnic groups has continued to grow as the Igbos feel isolated from reaching the highest position in the land because of an unwritten agreement between the two other major ethnic groups. By their alliance, the two ethnic groups have continued to produce people who have so far failed in taking Nigeria to the promise land - but because of their numbers, we have continued to settle for mediocre.

The power-hungry-ethnic-champions who have held sway for many years have refused to understand that shutting out one of its three major ethnic groups from power fosters a spirit of rebellion, which in turn results in hostility among the ethnic groups. More so, this act doesn't encourage a peaceful and harmonious co-existence.

Interestingly, a feeling of marginalization as this, is one of the reasons why the country has refused to move forward. This is because the ethnic groups have failed to work together as one. Instead, the individuals who have at various times occupied the highest position in the land over the years made themselves ethnic warriors instead of looking out for the interest of the nation.

Because all ethnic groups in the country are equal and must have same equal political opportunities, at no time should Nigerians ever be given that impression that a particular ethnic group is born to rule over others.

On the part of the Igbos, there should be a conscientious effort to harmonize the existing relationship between them and other ethnic groups, if this dream must come true. The pockets of discord being sown by enemies of the people who have continued to exploit fault-lines to cause disunity must be spotted and erased.

Now and again, I see people debating whether those from Delta, Ebonyi etc have the 'true blood of Igboness' flowing in them. What kind of nonsensically divisive argument is that? It is like we are intentionally playing right into the hands of our ex-military rulers who planted the seed of discord by ripping us apart many years ago. The southeast and southsouth are brothers and must not allow their enemies to continue to dictate their political steps.

Southeast and southsouth politicians who are happy to play second fiddle after selling their rights must be reminded that history will always remember them with a frown. All illustrious sons and daughters of Ndigbo must as a matter of urgency begin now to lobby their counterparts from other ethnic groups for an Igbo Presidency come 2023.

If the dream of Igbo presidency must be achieved in 2023, the high rate of voter apathy in the southeast and Southsouth must be reversed. Ndigbo must come out en masse to vote instead of sitting back at home hoping for a miracle.

The absence of a leadership figure from the southeast and southsouth capable of uniting the two groups has been a clog in the wheel of progress. However, progress must be made with what is available. Illustrious sons and daughters (politicians, businessmen/women, intellectuals, writers and like minds) of southeast and southsouth extraction must come together as one for the purpose of producing an Igbo presidency in 2023.

We must upset the balance to forge a formidable force and take what is rightfully ours.

In order to correct the current unsavory political equation in Nigeria, foster peace & unity and conceive the idea in the hearts of all that Nigeria belongs to all, the Igbos must produce the President come 2023. This way, equity and justice would have been served.

PoliticsOpen Letter To Daddy Freeze, The Hypocrite Deceiving The Gullible And Lost Souls by Thandiubani(op):
Open Letter to Daddy Freeze, The Hypocrite Deceiving The Gullible And Lost Souls

Political analyst and social commentator, Alexander Thandi Ubani has called out controversial OAP Daddy Freeze for living a life totally different from what he preaches, thus leading many people astray.

It is important that I make this clarification: I do not have any personal grudge against Ifedayo Olarinde aka Daddy Freeze. I am writing this because of the obvious contradictions and fakery associated with his person which I believe have been ignored giving him the ginger to continue on this path to perdition thereby deceiving the gullible.

(A little background: Daddy Freeze is an On-Air-Personality (OAP) who works with Cool FM. He considers himself to be the most intelligent OAP in Nigeria. He shows off his muiltimillion naira cars and expensive watches on social media and spends most of his time bashing men of God.)

To start with, Daddy Freeze is a con artist, a greedy punk who makes money through trickery. As a radio presenter, Daddy Freeze charges musicians huge sums just to play their music on air. Note: this is against rule of the radio station where he works. In fact, the act is called Payola which refers to an illegal practice of payment or other inducement by record companies for the broadcast of recordings on commercial radio in which the song is presented as being part of the normal day's broadcast, without announcing that there has been consideration paid in cash or in kind for its airplay.

My friend, a musician recounted his ordeal in the hands of Daddy Freeze to me. He was forced to jettison the idea of having his song played on Daddy Freeze's radio station due to the exorbitant amount he charged his team. This is even as a large inscription on the wall of the building prohibits OAPs from charging money to play songs. How ironic! The worst is that he doesn't charge what up and coming musicians can afford; his greed makes him to go for very high figures, all for his evil pocket.

As a con artist he always is, Daddy Freeze has justified himself for collecting money from artistes to play their songs using the guise of 'consultancy' after he was called out on Twitter. Consultancy for what? What is a musician consulting from a radio presenter like Daddy Freeze other than to give him his song to play? Is he a music guru, video director, song writer, producer or what for a musician to seek for consultation?

If you say you charge people for consultancy, then spell out the services you will be offering because taking songs from musicians to play on radio cannot be 'consultancy'.

Daddy Freeze is nothing but a dishonourable fellow with a twisted mentality. For every bad thing he does, he has a justification. In his small mind, he's a king that does no wrong.

Because of this greedy venture invented by him and his fellow OAPs, it is difficult for good artistes to have their songs heard because they do not have the financial strength. The industry is now left for the money bags who pay huge sums to Daddy Freeze and his likes to have whack songs promoted, thereby muffling those who are talented but poor.

Playing songs are supposed to be free, a selfless act for your audience/listeners meant to entertain and keep them glued to your radio. Since people like Daddy Freeze monetized the process, our ears have become a dumping ground for all manner of whack and meaningless songs because the good ones have been sacrificed on the altar of six figure checks.

These days, when you listen to some radio stations, you wonder how the songs made it to the playlist - all thanks to Daddy Freeze and his co-conspirators.

Daddy Freeze is the true definition of hypocrisy. Here is a man who rips artistes apart with dubious charges but jacks off on a daily basis by attacking the clergy at every given opportunity.

It is the height of foolery and hypocrisy that a man who dubiously siphons money from artistes in the name of playing their songs on air (which is totally against the rule of the station where he works) will have the effrontery to cast aspersions on clergymen who ask their members to pay tithe - an obligation gotten from the scriptures.

Here is a cheat who hides under the guise of consultancy to extort money from people, still open his mouth to preach the word of God on a daily basis. You teach people about the gospel, but your life is the exact opposite of what you preach. I consider such to be an act of sheer iberiberism (apologies to Rochas Okorocha).

This is the exact reason why many people do not take Daddy Freeze serious except for zombies. Even the gospel you preach all the time admonished you to be the light of the world. Yes, be of good conduct that by your action, you may win souls for Christ.

With the same mouth you curse, insult and make fun of people who share a different opinion with you on a matter, that is the same mouth you use to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The same mouth you use to preach the gospel, that is the same mouth you use to mock a man or woman on your page with physical deformity just because he or she disagrees with you. Shame on you, Daddy Freeze. You have knowledge but lack wisdom.

Pause for a moment Daddy Freeze and allow this to sink in: You may be gifted in the act of oratory display, be an eloquent speaker, but those who see beyond the flamboyant maneuvers you display cannot be deceived - all are a mere bombastic dribbling to deceive the gullible.

Do you Daddy Freeze even have a conscience? Or has it been smeared overtime by the many lies you've told yourself, that it is now a part of you?

A busybody who feels his opinion on every issue must be right, taken and accepted as the voice of god. A lily-livered chicken who blocks off those who have superior argument, but climaxes by attacking those he feels cannot match his sycophantic excesses.

You are a lost soul who claims to know the scriptures but cannot abide by its rules. What sense is there to have knowledge without wisdom?

A man who is versed in the scriptures but fails to follow the instructions contained therein, takes pleasure in teaching it to others but his life reeks of the exact opposite of what he teaches is nothing but a nitwit whose only objective is to show off. You remind me of the pharisees.

Brother, repent before it is too late.

Yours truly,
Alexander Thandi Ubani

PoliticsHow Buhari And The Media Used Fake News To Tarnish Onnoghen's Image by Thandiubani(op):
A Nigerian political analyst, Alexander Thandi Ubani has looked into the controversy and allegations leveled against the suspended CJN with a view at setting the records straight.

**********

No matter how hard suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen tries to repair his already damaged image, his detractors have achieved their purpose.

Chief among those leading this sad cause that has soiled the hard-earned image and reputation of Onnoghen which he laboured so hard to attain over the years as a judge is President Muhammadu Buhari who led a vindictive cause by spreading fake news when he said that security agencies had since traced suspicious transactions running into MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to onnoghen's personal accounts, all undeclared or improperly declared as required by law.

It was with this false excuse that he subverted the constitution to suspend Onnoghen making the judiciary, (a supposed independent arm of government) a laughing stock.

In Buhari's words: “Although the allegations in the petition are grievous enough in themselves, the security agencies have since then traced other suspicious transactions running into millions of dollars to the CJN’s personal accounts, all undeclared or improperly declared as required by law”.

This intentional act, served its purpose: to paint Onnoghen as a corrupt monster and judge who make money through dubious means and handouts from court cases. The media trial sponsored by the government of Buhari and its agents of fake news reverberated in states, cities, towns and villages across the nation with many calling for Onnoghen to be thrown into prison even when the court has not stated so.

For the fact that Buhari made the statement on national television, the effect of this propaganda and campaign of calumny was far-reaching against the person of Onnoghen. Nigerians now see Onnoghen as a corrupt judge who has used his position of authority to benefit his pocket.

Even before investigations are concluded, Buhari painted him as one of those working against the government's anti-corruption war as seen in Buhari's speech below while swearing in the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Mohammed:

"It is no secret that this government is dissatisfied with the alarming rate in which the Supreme Court of Nigeria under the oversight of Justice Walter Onnoghen has serially set free, persons accused of the most dire acts of corruption, often on mere technicalities, and after quite a number of them have been convicted by the trial and appellate courts.

Since there is nothing the Executive Arm can do after the apex court of the land has spoken on any matter, several of these individuals walk free among us today, enjoying what are clearly the proceeds of the corruption which for so long has defeated the efforts of this nation to develop and prosper." Buhari said.

Evidence at hand shows that Buhari lied against Onnoghen. In fact, the suspended CJN according to investigation by the Code of Conduct Bureau investigators and evidence tendered by a Standard Chartered Bank staff, Ifeoma Okabue in charge of Onnoghen’s account, did not have millions of dollars as claimed by the President.

Okabue said she took charge of the management of Onnghen’s accounts in 2015.

Giving a breakdown of the accounts, she said the first account, with No: 5001062686 was opened in April 2010, the second: 0001062667 was opened in June 2009; the third: 0001062650 was opened in June 2009; the fourth: 5001062679 was opened in March 2010 while the fifth: 5001062693 was opened in February 2011.

She gave the balance in each of the accounts to include, that the first had an opening balance of €30,178.58 in January 2018 and a balance of €10,187.18 as at December 2018.

For the second account: 0001062667 the witness said the balance by January 2018 was N34, 280,904.61 while it has N2, 656,019.21 as at December 2018.

The third account: 0001062650, the witness said, has, by January 2018, a balance of $80,824.25, while it reduced to $56,878 by January 2019.

She said the fourth account: 5001062679 have a balance of £39,456.08 in January 2018, which reduced to £13,730.70 by December of the same year.

The witness said the fifth account: 50010626 had an opening balance of N6,411,312.77k by January 2018, which increased to N12,852,580.52 by December of the same year.

Unlike what was projected in the media, Onnoghen didn't operate a foreign account but operated a domiciliary account in Nigeria.

In fact, the official of the Standard Chartered Bank revealed that Onnoghen borrowed $500,000 from the bank, part of the money seen in his account.

Also, the claim that 55 houses were traced to Onnoghen is outright falsehood meant to ridicule the person of the suspended CJN.

Evidence provided by a retired Director at the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, Mr Awal Yakassai, on Thursday showed that Onnoghen has only 5 houses.

As we await the decision of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, it is right to conclude that even if the CCT sets Onnoghen free, the damage has been done.

The government of Buhari has become notorious for using the media to damage the reputation of perceived opponents. This irresponsible act by Buhari and his cohorts spell huge disaster for the polity. Worst still, the government has shown no remorse even when it eventually turns out that they have deliberately distorted the facts for their political gains.

Take the case of Senate President Bukola Saraki at the CCT.

After the government used the media to damage his reputation, he won at the court but the lies by the government against his person couldn't be erased. No apology, nothing. The government officials who leveled falsehood against him went about their businesses after tarnishing his image.

Should Onnoghen win, the government must show responsibility by apologising to Onnoghen for no man who has served his country illustriously would be shamed in such a way and not regret ever being born a Nigerian.

The President should grow up and dust off this ethnic baggage of antagonising people who are not from his ethnic group. The pace at which Onnoghen's prosecution took place is still baffling.

Don't forget that Buhari's Chief of Staff, Abba kyari has yet to answer to allegations of bribery involving MTN leveled against him. Yet after three years, the report of the probe ordered by the President is yet to be made public.

Chief of Army Staff, Buratai still have allegations of corruption hovering over his head after purchasing mansions in Dubai for a whopping $1.5 million, yet Buhari keeps acting like he hasn't heard about any of these.

It is a shame that at this time and age, while other countries are making advancement in science and other sphere of human life, Buhari and his cohorts dedicate their time and energy looking for political victims.

Shame on the Nigerian media, agents and stakeholders who have become cheap means for spreading propaganda and fake news. The Nation Newspaper played a horrible role in spreading fake news about Onnoghen which was copied by DailyPost, Sahara Reporters and others.

For instance, TheNation had on January 23, 2019 made false claims about monies allegedly found in Onnoghen's account.

The paper circulated a report that the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission restricted the operation of five accounts belonging to Onnoghen with about $3million. This is outright falsehood fed to millions of Nigerians by TheNation.

It is high time sanity is brought back to the media in Nigeria. The era of copy-and-paste journalism is gone. Publishing defamatory contents which are not backed by evidence must be punished no matter whose ox is gored.

The reality for us all is that Onnoghen will only lick his wounds and accept that Nigeria cares for no one.
