omenkaLives: I was hoping to see our engineers in the house point to this but have been disappointed no one ever did. happy to see someone finally noticed it.
I'm not an engineer but when I saw the design of the bridge, being an avid fan of National Geographic, I couldn't stop scratching my head when I heard people call the bridge a "suspension" bridge! I have seen countless number of suspension bridges and known for a fact the hangers are meant to suspend the deck, running from pillars poles apart. But in this case, the hangers don't even seen to be holding any weight at all but rather seem be be in place just for aesthetics, and the bulk weight week to be overwhelming the pullers doing the actual weight lifting.
this is a fatal design flaw if you ask me, and this is no "suspension" bridge for the hangers aren't really what is holding the deck but the pillars beneath the deck are. Suspension bridge . Naija no go kill person. If they had used a material like carbon or glass reinforced fibre for that "design or props", it will be at least 3 times lighter (reduced dead weight) and three times stronger than that lump of steel. But will be a bit expensive. But you know my people will always buy the cheapest of the cheap. The designer is not necessarily at fault provided the right materials are used. That weight will create a creep. If I tell a grown man to carry a 1kg weight, he will say it's rubbish but carry that 1kg weight for 2 hours, and you will know what's up. That's exactly what will happen there. |

moppie123: The dead load on the column has always been part of the design right from time. Even in the 3D images before eventual construction, it has always been there. So the load would be considered in the structural design. I also don't think the columns cant take the load because looking at the picture, the load was evenly distributed on the columns and stands on a continuous end to end beam that supports it. My best guess would be soil movement or poor soil test considering the direction and shape of the crack. Anambra state and South East has issues with their soil though. My 2 cents tho Sure, I believe there is nothing wrong with the design, but there could have been a problem with the material selection. A designer might have recommended the use of carbon fibre or glass fibre reinforced material for those props. These materials would have been 3times stronger, and 3 times lighter than the steel they eventually used for it, but would cost more. But to cut back the money, those guys could have decided to use steel. |

The crack in the first picture is quite wide and water is entering and corroding the steel reinforcement. Erosion in the East is probably worse than anywhere else and the contractor should have place more emphasis on this. There should be clearly defined path for water drainage and also enough concrete cover for steel rebar. However, I don't see any immediate panic. Hopefully, the bridge will survive another 5 years, just enough time for the expiration of Obiano's second tenure, if he wins The dead load on that column (poor load transfer n uneven settlement), a quack decision in the name of fancy design, with the air of corrosive water will lead to it's eventual collapse in 10years. |

AntiWailer: Bros that night was crazy.
Almost everybody in the plane cried.
The guy beside me was just screaming.
I just wrote a note, put it in my laptop bag and slept off after a while.
I could not stand it any longer. Pains every wia. No tears again
I have never been that scared in my life.
The plane will do as if it is going down and the pilot is no longer in control. All of a sudden he will regain control and speeeeeeed. I think one of the worst way to die is probably in an aircraft. The panic alone is enough to kill people over n over again. I had a similar experience with those guys, their planes dey always hit turbulent storm, ah begi! Inside plane go turn crusade ground. |

AntiWailer: I had that crazy experience on my way to Port Harcourt last year. Same airline.
Infact I already gave up that the plane might crash.
The pilot was just going on and on for almost 1 hour after he said we should prepare for landing. We are together on this. Those guys are a disaster waiting to happen |

Not trying to be the carrier of bad news but air peace might soon have a mishap. It's better to sit in a bus than to board their planes. If you have never bothered their planes, don't quote me in bad light. Air travellers will relate |
