How much? And can I still change to it since I already used 20w?

Depends on how long you've been using the 20W 50, how often you change your oil and the distance you covered between each oil changes. And also sludge. You can give me the information so I'll be able to better advice you.

For the oil prices, depends on the one you want to pick, but the range is between 22-27k minus shipping.

If u have sludge, then yes , bad for engine to change.

But If u have being changing oil at regular intervals & have no sludge, then u can first start with semi-synthetic(mobile xhp 2000, total 5w30 etc), do it a few times, then go for fully synthetic ( U should know though, synthetic oil freaking expensive)...

But does even 2003 car need a fully synthetic?..I think a mineral oil of correct weight would do just fine..

That car requires synthetic oil o. Manufacturer specifies 5W 30 with API SL (energy conserving). I don't think any semi-synthetic oil has that API rating. I might be wrong, but I don't think so.

Other than that, your oil change method is brilliant, if there's no sludge like you said.

0W 20 is the recommended oil for my car too, where can I get it in Nigeria?

Total and Mobil all have only 20W ish

If you're in Ibadan, I can help you get either Mannol 0W 20/5W 20, or Yuko 0W 20/5W 20.

For our weather here, there's no difference between 0W 20 and 5W 20, as they are both 20 weight oils and have the same temperature range.

If you're not in Ibadan but are still interested, I can arrange for it to be shipped to you. Just let me know what you decide.

And if your fan is on automatic, how far will the car work before the fan start working

This is a good thing to know, as it will help you pick up if anything looks like its going wrong.

Been driving all day with my scanner plugged on to monitor real time temperature. It has not overheated.

And it won't.

Billions of dollars in research and development supports this. Car makers are not stupid, so don't mind any angry goat saying otherwise.

Once your cooling system is fine, no overheating.

Thanks to this thread, I have bought a thermostat for my car. I am fixing it tomorrow and returning the fans back to automatic.
While doing this, is there any other thing I need to do? Do I need to take the radiator to car wash? Please tell me guys.

Check your radiator hoses for leakages, and your radiator itself. Ensure the rewire working on your car is sound and not an incompetent person.

Wish you the best of luck! Update us with the progress o.

I have used 20w 50 on my Toyota Matrix 2003 since I got it as Tokunbo 3 years ago. I wanted to change it to the recommended oil last year but my mechanic said the engine might react to it in a funny way. What do you think?

There's no easy way to say this, so I'll just say it.

Your mechanic is right. You've been using the wrong oil weight for too long, and switching now will likely cause your engine to burn oil and smoke eventually. I also have a 2003 matrix and I had to change the engine eventually when the thing was smoking like crazy. I changed the rings before doing this, but the same thing was the result after about 4 months. There's a nairaland thread about my experiences somewhere, if it would help you.

Your engine most likely has a good degree of sludge, especially if you drive for short distances/city driving only, plus use the 20W 50 for 4000, 5000 miles. Now, the correct oil for that car is a 5W 30 oil, full synthetic. If you do that, the synthetic oil contains cleaning agents that will affect the sludge and open up passages in your engine that have been blocked by sludge, thereby causing possible shortage of oil, smoking or in extreme cases, engine knocking.

I can't say for sure that this will happen to your engine, but I'm 80% sure it would adversely affect it based on the time you've been using the wrong oil.

Sorry bro.

Keep using like that and change at 3,000 miles max with a good filter. And maybe start saving for a replacement engine if you want, or you can sell as-is with full disclosure to the buyer.

Many thanks for your input, Can thermostat be replaced or being sold in the spare parts market?

Yes, you can always get a replacement thermostat in spare parts market.

The recommended oil for your car is 0W 20 or 5W 20. Please Google it to confirm. No modern car has 20W 50 as recommended oil. None!

Why I brought it here is that, my mechanic converted my fan to Manual without my consent. I have reached out to some couple of rewire to change it back to automatic, they said "oga leave it like that" our weather is different from oyibob own" I always want my car to be the way it was created

Find a competent mechanic and confirm that your car doesn't have overheating issues. Once that is done, find a competent rewire and INSTRUCT him to change the fan back to factory setting.

Don't discuss with him, INSTRUCT him. If he wants to start saying rubbish, look for someone else. Don't let anyone spoil your car for you o. The people that made it have already tested it in hotter temperatures than the one we have in Nigeria, and the cars work fine.

Wow, Thanks

This is very wrong advice. Pls don't remove your thermostat and run fans direct. You will cause the engine to always run below the operating temperature, and your ECU will increase fuel entering the cylinder in a bid to get the temperature up. The fans constantly running will also weaken them and overcool your engine. Your fuel consumption will increase, your engine will likely have sludge and you'll be needing a replacement engine in no time.

Leave your car as it is. If you have an overheating problem, find the cause and fix it, not masking the problem with thermostat removal and fan conversion.

Also, while you're at it, find the recommended oil weight for the car and stick to it. Don't use 20W 50 as most "mechanics" advice. They are not smarter than the car manufacturer.

in Nigeria we can say from experience. Some people spend 30 minutes driving from their house to the express on mud roads grin. The onus is once your highway driving mpg calculation is okay then why should the city driving mpg calculation be wrong? This recent fuel prices is causing people a lot of stress.

Nah my experience you just describe. From my house to main road is just over 4km, but it will take you at least 25 minutes on a day you're fast. And with that speed, your silencer will surely see shege banza.

Not realistic. You mean you do an average of 60-72km/hr within town?

If this is true then your gas mileage is beyond ridiculous. Scan and cross reference the codes you get with driveaccord.net on Google.

If you get P0024 for instance, type P0024 driveaccord.net on your Google search bar and read how people who have had the issue before you have solved it. Good luck

I usually move fast, like I said earlier. Not too spirited, but car accelerates fine and fast. The only code I got was P0011, and I've cleaned the vtc filter still the code persists. No adverse driving performance.

Thank you for the referral smiley
Car Talk / Re: Honda Accord MPG Issue by theadeola(m): 4:29pm On Jul 16, 2023
On another highway trip, I got just over 20mpg, though the road was terrible and filled with quite a bit of bumps and potholes, so I had to slow down more than what I'd consider the usual amount on a highway.

The variation is quite frustrating.

His driving habits may matter if he jackrabbit, or engage in some random terrible driving, it can happen.

I don't jackrabbit, but I don't like slow driving. I usually let the car accelerate "naturally", usually no hard acceleration unless needed.
