Photo- Prof. Yemi Osinbajo Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said the country plans to establish an Entrepreneur Bank to provide flexibility in provision of facilities to businesses. Osinbajo disclosed this while fielding questions from a cross-section of women who ply their trade in various fields at a programme tagged `Next Level Conversation’ on Monday in Abuja. The women, who were mostly entrepreneurs, were drawn from the education, environment, agriculture, real estate, hospitality among other sectors. The vice president said that the issue of giving cheap loans to small businesses had featured prominently in the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. Nigeria, he said, has been able to deal to some extent with small and micro businesses; we have TraderMoni, MarketMoni, FarmerMoni; which are basically very small credit schemes. “We are also looking at an Enterprise Bank or an Entrepreneur Bank which is one of the types of establishment we are looking at. “We think there is a need for a bank that will be a bit more nimble about entrepreneurship; a bank that has a bit more flexibility. “That is why we are talking about Entrepreneur Bank; of course, we will need a bill in the National Assembly; in the meantime, we think we can start with a bond to put a lot around it without necessarily building another big bureaucracy,’’ he said. Osinbajo said there was need to properly fund education as efforts were been made to get the Tertiary Education Trust Fund(TETFund) to also fund the private sector. He reiterated that the issue of funding education lied with the Federal, State and Local Governments. More so, the vice president said that the Federal Government would synergise with state and local governments to curb multiple taxation which had adverse effect on businesses. The ministers of Women Affairs and Finance participated in the interaction.(NAN) Source: http://www.insiderpostonline.com/news/next-level-fg-plans-entrepreneur-bank/

Nwafor Sunday The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, Monday squashed rumours making rounds over his resignation. Recall that Onnoghen was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari for not declaring all his assets. He was replaced by Justice Tanko Mohammed from Bauchi state. Onnoghen who debunked the news of his resignation via a statement signed by his media aide, Awassam Bassey, described the CJN’s rumoured resignation as “fake news circulated by mischief makers.” “Mischief makers are still circulating this fake news. Once again, no truth in it whatsoever. The Hon CJN, Hon Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, GCON, has not resigned,” Bassey said. Details later... Ariwodola Idowu The Ekiti Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, says the state will henceforth arrest parents of pupils found hawking during school hours. The governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olayinka Oyebode, made this known on Sunday in Ado Ekiti. The governor gave the warning while meeting with stakeholders in the education sector at the weekend. The governor asked parents to take advantage of the free education policy of his administration to reduce the number of out-of-school children. Fayemi said all hands must be on deck to checkmate the declining school enrolment in the state regarded as ‘Fountain of Knowledge’. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Fayemi had, shortly after his inauguration in October 2018, declared free education from primary to senior secondary schools in the state. He also abolished all education levies and the education tax introduced by the immediate past administration in the state. At the meeting, Fayemi said that many parents were yet to take full advantage of the free and qualitative education policy of the administration. He noted that part of the responsibilities of government was to ensure that children and youth who were the future of the nation, were properly groomed through qualitative education that would prepare them for the future. The governor said the current school enrolment rate of 55 per cent as against 96 per cent recorded in 2014 was unacceptable to his government, adding that something must be done urgently to reverse the ugly trend. He said that the state government had started compiling records of retired teachers with a view to determining available vacancies in the teaching service and how to fill them. Fayemi also added that the present administration would soon commence recruitment of competent and qualified teachers who would help to raise the standard of education in the state. He also disclosed that the administration had commenced the process of returning mission schools to their original owners, but stressed that government would continue to monitor them to ensure that the schools do not decline in standards.(NAN) Source: http://www.insiderpostonline.com/news/ekiti-parents-of-kids-hawking-during-school-to-be-arrested-fayemi/

The United Niger Delta Youth Council has advised that the case against suspended Justice Walter Onnoghen should not be politicised and given ethnic meaning. The council also stressed that public officers should be held responsible for their actions and inactions. The case of Justice Walter Onnoghen, it argued, should not be seen as ethnic persecution. The council described the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen, as the Chief Justice of Nigeria as apt, timely and a welcome development. Mr. Jackson Bob- Manuel, President of the Council, called on the embattled jury to face the law and stop looking for sympathy. “We are of the opinion that Justice Walter Onnoghen having risen to the exalted position of Chief Justice of Nigeria should have exhibited a high level of decency in his conduct as the number one Judicial Officer in the country. “It is, therefore, inexcusable for a man of such high standing to feign ignorance of the law as regards the declaration of assets in the country under the Code of Conduct Act. And if that is the case, then such a person is not fit to hold the exalted position of Chief Justice of Nigeria. “We also wish to use this medium to state that corruption as a social vice knows no tribe, race or religion. It is a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabric of the Nigerian society over the years, and so, therefore, those that using the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen to wipe up ethnic and religious sentiments should desist from such acts as they cannot cry more than the bereaved. “The United Niger Delta Youth Council says enough is enough of this treachery by political allies from the Niger Delta region. They must be held responsible for their actions and inactions as regards their conduct in office. “The fact remains that he failed to declare some of his assets as stipulated by the law and so, therefore, he has committed an offence which requires that he faces the full wrath of the law. And as the number one law officer in the country, he should know better. The Council also frowned at the insinuations in some quarters that the government was persecuting Onnoghen. “While this is far from the truth, it is merely an attempt to cover up for a crime that was committed and deceive the public.’’(Credit) Source: http://www.insiderpostonline.com/news/niger-delta-youth-council-disowns-onnoghen/

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that if re-elected, he would continue to run a corruption-free government as against the 16 years mis-rule of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The President made this known in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital Saturday, when he was received by 103 traditional rulers in the state led by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan, during his campaign for re-election. Buhari remarked that the pervasive nature and devastating, impact of corruption in the nation before the election, was dysfunctional. Recalled when he assumed office in 2015, Buhari said that fight against corruption was a battle for the souls of different countries, adding that it was a fight that must be won. The President recalled that since independence the country has suffered from the severe consequences of corruption, noting that it became imperative to take steps to reverse the trend. “During the past several months, we have been taking steps to institute integrity and transparency in the processes of government and holding those who have plundered our commonwealth to account for their actions.” “However, the costs of recovery and sanctions are also enormous. While commendable successes have been recorded, it has become manifest that corruption fights back. With enormous stolen resources elements have attempted to compromise law enforcing institutions and pervert the course of justice.” “This realization highlights the necessity of building a system that focuses on preventing corruption. We continue to implement policies aimed at building resilient systems that can withstand assault by corrupt officials.” He, then, expressed appreciation to the royal fathers for the supports he been enjoying from them since the advent of his administration. Just as the President solicited the support of the monarchs in moving the nation forward, particularly in the forthcoming elections, he stated that his visit to the state was to remind them on the need to reflect on the condition of the country before his administration came on board and what his administration had achieved in the last three and half years for the country. Photo- The Group Thirty four political parties in Ogun State, under the aegis of Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), have adopted former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar as their preferred candidate in the presidential election coming up in February. Rising from an enlarged meeting held on Thursday at the Sagamu residence of the former Governor of Ogun State and Deputy Chairman, PDP Presidential Campaign Council, (South), Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the leadership of the political parties and their candidates at all levels unanimously said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has failed in its electoral promises to the people, hence their decision to endorse what they described as “a credible alternative in the candidacy of Atiku Abubakar going by his leadership qualities and track records of achievements both in the private and public sectors.” Addressing the gathering which also had the representatives of Afenifere; the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, the Igbo, Hausa and South-South Communities, as well as that of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Chief Razak Eyiowuawi, the National Chairman of the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) and Assistant Secretary of the Steering Committee of CUPP, the body said that its main aim is to “save Nigeria from insecurity, violence and hardship which has become the order of the day and the only way out of the impending danger is to vote out the ruling party by coming together as one united front to usher in a new administration.” The coming elections, he said, is not for Nigerians as individuals but for incoming generations. He also eulogized Otunba Daniel as a political navigator who has inspired a lot of people in his visionary ideas over the years with his political influence cutting across all divides. Speaking on behalf of the Ogun Labour Party, its former Chairman and House of Representatives candidate, Comrade Niyi Osoba said it would be unfavourable to Nigerians if the APC is returned to power under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari whom he claimed “has constantly exhibited lack of capacity to govern.” Otunba Tayo Onayemi, former local government chairman and Alliance for Democracy (AD) chieftain, in his own contribution, said “the incompetence of the Buhari Administration is very conspicuous as a government which has been operating as a failure since inception which calls for a change.” In his remarks, Otunba Daniel thanked the leadership of the coalition for what he described as its sensitiveness and concern for the nation’s future and welfare of her citizenry. According to him, the current situation in the country calls for a radical departure from the status quo and that this could only be achieved through collective efforts and engagement of all well-meaning Nigerians irrespective of their political inclination. According to him, “What you have done today has further driven home the decision by 47 political parties throughout the federation which had earlier pledged their support for Atiku Abubakar at the national level. “it will be recalled that the current government based its campaign on three major issues of provision of security, fighting corruption and improvement of the economy none of which they executed as we speak”. “Instead, they revised the fortunes of the country from one of the largest economies in the third world during former President Jonathan’s era to poverty capital of the world according to global statistics. “It has come to a stage where we have to rescue the country and this cannot be successfully done by one political party but a joint effort of all”. “It therefore becomes expedient to present a formidable united front to wrest power form the incumbent party, APC”. “The choice of Atiku as the preferred candidate is germane because everybody will have a sense of belonging in the government of inclusiveness of the PDP under the watch of the former Vice President Atiku who has promised to restructure the country on assumption of office”, Daniel concluded... The Anambra government has disassociated itself from the communiqué by Ohaneze Ndigbo endorsing the candidacy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar an endorsement described as “dubious’’ and “misleading” by APC. Abubakar is the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential candidate in the February 16 election. Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, the Secretary to Anambra Government (SSG), made the disclosure in a statement made available to newsmen in Enugu. Chukwulobelu declared that the contents of the communiqué did not reflect the Anambra Government’s position. It will be recalled that an arm of the Ohaneze Ndigbo ‘Ime Obi’ arising from a meeting on Thursday in Enugu declared support for Abubakar. Ime Obi is like a rapid response arm of the Ohaneze Ndigbo, comprising delegations from the seven states that make up the organisation including state governors. However, Chukwulobelu expressed dismay that the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation had decided to be partisan, in spite of the fact that members of the organisation belong to different political parties. Chukwulobelu said: “We have read bits of the communiqué purportedly issued by the Ohaneze leadership. We regret that they do not reflect the position of the people and Government of Anambra State. “The position of the Anambra State Government is that Ohaneze should remain a united umbrella for all Ndigbo, and should not take sides with any party. “There are major leaders in all political parties, including the three major ones in Nigeria, namely, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), All Progressives Congress ( APC) and PDP. “It is deeply regrettable that the Ohaneze leadership has chosen to go down a divisive trajectory capable of setting back Igbo unity for several years,” he said. The SSG said that Gov. Willie Obiano had sent a delegation to attend the Ime Obi meeting summoned by the organisation in Enugu. “Our delegation arrived early enough to participate in the meeting of Ime Obi scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Thursday. “We were surprised to learn that the meeting had been held earlier and lasted for a mere 30 minutes. “The representative of the Ebonyi State Government, Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe, who arrived at the venue before the time the meeting was scheduled to start was also surprised that it had already taken place. “The same goes for others like the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige,” he said. Chukwulobelu said that they were shocked that the meeting was even slated for a day President Muhammadu Buhari was campaigning in Anambra and Enugu States. He said that Buhari’s visit to Anambra was to honour Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, First Republic President of Nigeria, and the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo was expected to participate actively. “We were, indeed, surprised that the Ime Obi meeting could hold today (on Thursday) of all days. ‘‘We had expected Ohaneze leaders to participate actively in the inauguration of the Zik Mausoleum, Onitsha, Anambra State,” he said. Chukwulobelu said that the Mausoleum which had been under construction for the past 23 years was completed by the Buhari’s Administration which was a big honour to Azikiwe, an Igbo man. Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the as dubious and miss-leading. Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu stated this on Friday in Abuja at a news briefing while reacting to the development, which he said was a miss representation of the interest of Indigo. The APC spokesman, however, said that the purported endorsement may have been done by Atiku’s friends whom he had publicly promised to make rich if he became the country’s president... Photo- Chief Jim Nwobodo Barely 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Anambra and Enugu states, Senator Jim Nwobodo, has dumped the All Progressives Congress, APC. The former Governor of old Anambra State, announced his defection during a visit by leaders of the PDP in the Southeast to his Amaechi country home, in Enugu. “Why we are here is that a house you built has been vacant, we are calling on you to most respectfully step back to your house,” the PDP leader of delegation had pleaded. “It is difficult for me to ignore their call and I cannot do that. Where will I go if I’m not with you. I’m back to PDP, Nwobodo said. “I’m a democrat, I believe in democracy, those around Mr. President should tell him the truth,” he declared questioning some of the activities of the APC members. He described attempt to arraign the Chief Justice of Nigeria illegally as a mockery and desecration of the the judiciary and the rule of law, stressing “I will not be part of it.” He directed his followers and all people in the south-east to vote the PDP. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has also endorsed Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as its choice candidate in the coming election. President Muhammadu Buhari says that East to North corridor of the railway project will commence as soon as he returns to office for second term. Buhari made the pledge during the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign rally in Onitsha on Thursday. Buhari said the railway would start from Port Harcourt through Owerri, Nnewi, Enugu and Ebonyi before moving to Maiduguri. The president said the people of South-East should trust and vote him and all APC candidates in the upcoming elections adding that it was the same manner they came in 2015 and assured the people of several projects which were being done in the area. “During our 2015 campaign, we promised we will do the second Niger Bridge, construct roads, provide security and ensure the economy is better. “Today, we are doing all that we said, we have even completed work on Zik’s Mausoleum and other projects,” he said. Buhari said that his administration had done his best in tackling the menace of insecurity, saying that the Boko Haram elements no longer controlled any part of the North East. Mr Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of APC charged the people of the state to massively vote for the party to avoid what he claimed was allocation of votes that took place during the 2015 polls in Anambra. Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige said that 300, 000 school children were currently enjoying federal government school feeding programme in the state. Ngige also said that 15, 000 Anambra people are beneficiaries of N-Power programme, and assured that the state would vote for Buhari and other APC candidates. NAN reports that Amaechi had earlier told the gathering that the federal government will commence work on East/North railway corridor as soon as Buhari returns for second tenure.(NAN) Source: http://www.insiderpostonline.com/news/buhari-in-onitsha-pledges-to-commence-east-north-railway-line-if-re-elected/

The PDP Vice Presidential candidate for the Feb. 16 general election, Mr Peter Obi, says the country’s economic misfortunes will be reversed to rapid economic growth if the party is voted in. Obi gave the assurance at an interactive session with the Edo stakeholders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Benin on Thursday. According to him more than 40 per cent of young Nigerians are unemployed, leading to Nigeria being referred to as one of the poorest countries in the world. He also alleged that “Nigeria has been shut down economically, politically and socially for more than three years.” “This has resulted in hunger, insecurity, and economic instability especially in the North Eastern part of the country.” According to him, the Atiku/Obi-led government if elected will bring back foreign investors to develop the economy of the country. Obi said: “those who have closed their businesses for fear of kidnapping, banditry, insurgency as a result of government inability to provide security for the citizenry, will be encouraged to return.” He reiterated that the power sector would be taken care of through policies that would make the sector to work again and contribute to the country’s economic development. “We are going to treat everybody equal especially the physically challenged in the area of empowerment. “We will take the issue of the physically challenged very seriously in our incoming government and that is one of our agenda,” Obi said. The PDP vice presidential candidate said that local government autonomy would work through “proper restructuring and federalism.” “Local government will become very free and autonomous to get its revenue directly from the federation account without state interference for rapid grassroots development.” He also gave the assurance that an Atiku/Obi ticket would ensure that “incessant strike being experienced now,” would be a thing of the past. Obi said that if voted in, the PDP administration would give more priority to education and health care facilities. Earlier, the Edo Chairman of PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, criticised the Federal Government “tradermoni” loan scheme, telling the people “not to be carried away,” by it. Most of those that spoke during the meeting appealed to PDP to show “federal presence” in Edo if voted into power. Photo- Deputy President of the Senate Ike Ekweremadu. The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, on Thursday, clarified that President Muhammadu Buhari, did not specify a separate minimum wage for federal workers in the new bill he forwarded to the federal parliament on Wednesday evening. He said Buhari did not include a separate amount payable by the Federal Government to its workers. The labour and the government had agreed after series of dialogues, signed a pact approving N30, 000 as minimum wage payable to the federal workers while states and private sector workers are expected to receive N27, 000. But Ekweremadu urged the members of the newly inaugurated senate panel to look into the issue as well as the exemption of workers in smaller establishments with less than 25 staff. He also challenged members of the ad-hoc committee to critically look into the concerns of some state governments about their capability to pay the N27, 000 minimum wage. Ekweremadu subsequently named the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Olusola Adeyeye, as the chairman of an eight-member ad-hoc committee mandated to work on the bill and make their report available within two weeks. Other members of the panel are, Senator Abu Ibrahim, who will represent the Senate committee on labour; Senator Shehu Sani, representing the North-West and Senator Sam Egwu, representing the South-East. The rest are, Senators Suleiman Adokwe (North-Central); Francis Alimikhena (South-South); Solomon Adeola (South-West); and Binta Garba. Photo- Juan Guaidó, Venezuela’s second President The United States has taken an almost unprecedented step of officially declaring its support of an opposition candidate in Venezuela, following 35-year-old Juan Guaido’s public announcement that he is now the interim president. The BBC reports that a number of South American nations, “including Brazil, Colombia and Peru, have also recognised Mr Guaido as Venezuela’s legitimate president”. In a televised statement, US Vice President Mike Pence called on Venezuelan citizens to “make your voices heard” against President Nicolas Maduro, whom he called a “dictator with no legitimate claim to power,” Bloomberg says. “The announcement came as thousands of Guaido backers took to the streets in a revitalized effort against Maduro, whose military response to the widespread demonstrations seemed more measured than in the past,” says CNN. The BBC reports that under Manduro, “hyperinflation, power cuts and shortages of basic items have driven millions of people out of Venezuela”. Maduro was sworn in for a second term earlier this month. However the election was marred by a boycott from opposition parties and widespread claims of vote rigging. Maduro responded to the US calls to back Guaido by giving the US and its diplomatic staff 72 hours to leave the country. Foreign investors sold off Nigerian stocks valued at 642.65 billion naira (R29bn) last year, stock exchange data showed According to data, 48 per cent more than in 2017 as worries over weak growth amidst lower oil prices depressed sentiment. Risk aversion triggered by interest rate rises in the United States reversed capital flows to frontier markets including Nigeria, coupled with mounting political risk in the run-up to elections next month, accelerated losses for the stock market. The exchange put the value of transactions by foreign investors at 1.219 trillion naira last year, compared with 1.208 trillion naira at the end of 2017. Stock exchange chief executive Oscar Onyema has said market sentiment in the first half of 2019 would be driven by oil prices and election risk. But government spending to boost recovery following a 2016 recession could lift stocks by the second half. The main index, which was flat on Tuesday, has fallen 2 percent so far this year. It shed 17.81 percent in 2018 after a strong rally the previous year. (Source) http://www.insiderpostonline.com/news/buharinomics-investors-pulled-2-1bn-from-nse-in-2018-report/

The U.S. President Donald Trump’s demand for appropriation of funds for the construction of wall along the U.S.-Mexico border seems to have seen the light of the day as the Senate Appropriations Committee has unveiled legislation that will provide $5.7 billion for the construction of the wall. Also appropriated is fund that will see the federal government run its activities through Sept. 30. The 1,301-page bill is the latest bid for a breakthrough that would end the partial government shutdown that has dragged on for about a month. However, it is doubtful the legislation will reach the usual 60-vote threshold needed for bills to advance in the Senate. The bill is in line with President Trump’s offer, announced over the weekend, to extend temporary protections for three years for immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children and those escaping disaster zones, in exchange for wall funding. Democrats said that the proposal for a three-year extension didn’t go nearly far enough, and that Trump was using as leverage programs that he had targeted. Meanwhile, some critics on the right, including conservative commentator Ann Coulter, accused Trump of offering “amnesty.” Despite the opposition to Trump’s proposal on both sides of the aisle, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced Saturday he would move to bring legislation to the floor “this week.” “With bipartisan cooperation, the Senate can send a bill to the House quickly so that they can take action as well. “The situation for furloughed employees isn’t getting any brighter and the crisis at the border isn’t improved by show votes. But the President’s plan is a path toward addressing both issues quickly,” McConnell said. The Senate bill also provides $12.7 billion in supplemental disaster relief for victims of last year’s hurricanes in the southeastern U.S. and wildfires in California, among other events. It also provides funding for nine of the 15 Cabinet-level departments — including Agriculture, Homeland Security, State, Transportation, Interior and Justice — that have not been funded since the partial shutdown began Dec. 22. Both houses of Congress are scheduled to be back in session Tuesday, but senators who will be given 24 hours’ notice ahead of any vote, have yet to be recalled to Washington. House Democrats, for their part, plan to push ahead with votes on their own legislation to re-open the government and add $1 billion for border security including 75 more immigration judges and infrastructure improvements, but no funding for the wall. The office of Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., reiterated Monday that Democrats were unwilling to negotiate any border security funding until Trump re-opens the government. “Nothing has changed with the latest Republican offer,” said Schumer spokesman Justin Goodman. “President Trump and Senate Republicans are still saying: ‘Support my plan or the government stays shut.’ That isn’t a compromise or a negotiation — it’s simply more hostage taking.” Meanwhile, the president took rhetorical shots at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Twitter. “If Nancy Pelosi thinks that Walls are ‘immoral,’ why isn’t she requesting that we take down all of the existing Walls between the U.S. and Mexico,” he wrote Monday. “Let millions of unchecked ‘strangers’ just flow into the U.S.” Trump later tweeted: “Democrats are kidding themselves (they don’t really believe it!), if they say you can stop Crime, Drugs, Human Trafficking and Caravans without a Wall or Steel Barrier...
