LAGOS COMMUNITY MOURNS POLICE OFFICER WALE AKINLOTAN WHO SLUMPED, DIED ON ACTIVE DUTY; ILUPEJU DIVISION TO HOST NIGHT OF SONGS NEXT MONDAY

A Police officer, CPL Olawale Julius Adio Akinlotan has reportedly slumped on duty. The unfortunate incident of the young policeman who hailed from Ogun state is allegedly due to cardiac arrest. Trek Africa Newspaper gathered that the sad event took place on Monday 6th Nov. 2023 while he was on active duty.

Born in 1996, Olawale is a responsive, loving, and jovial officer who is well-known and loved in the Ilupeju community and Lagos police command. This has led to many residents of the axis to flood Ilupeju Division to pay condolence visits and honour the memory of the young man who was cut short in his prime of service.

The brief service to fatherland of late Olawale commenced in 2018 when he enrolled into the Nigerian Police Force as a Constable. He worked at Isheri division after which he worked very closely with the AIG Hakeem Odumosu (retd) as Lagos State Commissioner of Police while attached to Police PRO office as a Camera/media man. He worked with the current DPO of Ilupeju police station, SP Matilda Ngbaronye when she was the Deputy PRO of Lagos State Command.

He distinguished himself as a dutiful, agile officer when he was posted to Ilupeju division. There, he was promoted to the rank of CPL and worked as he served as the orderly to the DPO, SP Matilda Ngbaronye.

CPL Olawale Akinlotan who was a graduate of Mass Communication was a vibrant, intelligent, technology savvy officer with vast in knowledge and ever ready to assist. He was an asset to the Nigeria Police Force and a great ambassador of the Lagos state police command. 

The Police officers and men of Ilupeju Divison and the entire Ilupeju community mourns the demise of this young promising officer whose life has been unfortunately cut short.

A night of songs will be held in honor of the late officer at Ilupeju divison on Monday 13th November, 2023. He is survived by father, mother, siblings, and relatives.

The Nigeria Police Force has expressed its concerns over reports of impersonation of its staff, name dropping and other unlawful acts perpetrated by members of the public, warning that such are not tolerated and attracts severe weight of the law when caught.

The NPF made the remarks via a press statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, and made available to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), advising the general public to be "vigilant and exercise discernment when approached by anyone using the names of senior police officers..."

The statement revealed that "Nigeria Police Force remains deeply concerned about recent reports concerning the activities of certain individuals who are operating as middlemen, acting as negotiators on behalf of individuals involved in criminal activities currently in police custody. These individuals have been exploiting the names of high-ranking police officers, including that of the Inspector-General of Police, to intimidate and coerce others.

"The NPF strongly encourages all Nigerians to be vigilant and exercise discernment when approached by anyone using the names of senior police officers, as this practice not only undermines trust in the Nigeria Police Force but also poses a significant threat to the integrity of our justice system.

"Furthermore, the Force wishes to emphasize its unwavering commitment to the high standards and principles upon which the Nigeria Police Force is built. We firmly caution members of our own ranks who may consider colluding with these middlemen to compromise the standards of the Force to refrain from such actions immediately. It is essential to highlight that any officer found engaging in such activities will face severe consequences. The Nigeria Police Force maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards any actions that could tarnish our reputation or compromise the administration of justice.

"Finally, we reaffirm our commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force. We urge all Nigerians to have faith in our justice system and to report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, most especially using our already published contacts. Your cooperation and vigilance are essential in helping us maintain the integrity of our force and the justice system."

The Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam has reiterated that the UNDP's project on police reform aligns perfectly with the objectives of the Ministry, and they are determined to work hand in hand with the United Nations to achieve shared goals, National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP can report.

He stated this during a courtesy visit by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) team led by the Resident Representative, My. Muhammed Yahaya to the Headquarters of the Ministry in Abuja. The Minister pointed out that the UNDP's project on police reform is a significant initiative and the federal government is committed to promoting effective and accountable policing practices that uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of our citizens.

In his words, “The UNDP's support in this endeavor hasbeen instrumental, and we are grateful for the technical expertise and resources that have been extended to us. The visit of the UNDP team has provided us with valuable insights into the work that has been accomplished so far”. 

He said it is encouraging to witness the progress made in enhancing the capabilities of our police force,fostering community engagement, and improving the overall professionalism of our law enforcement agencies.

According to him, “It is indeed a privilege to serve in this capacity and work towards the noble goal of ensuring the safety and security of our citizens. Undoubtedly, there is still much work to be done. We are fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead, and we acknowledge the complexities associated with police reform. However, we are resolute in our commitments to bring about lasting change”.

The Minister stressed.Gaidam stated that the prospects for strengthening working relationship with the United Nations Development Programme are indeed promising adding that collaboration, coordination, and mutual respect will be the cornerstones of the partnership, as they strive to create a safer and more secure environment for all.

The Minister added that the expertise and guidance provided by the organization are invaluable assets that will undoubtedly provide to the success of overcoming the obstacles that stand in the way and creating a police force that embodies the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and respect for human rights.

Earlier, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Mohàmmed Yahaya stated that they were pleased by the commitment of the Minister and the Nigerian Government towards police reforms adding that UNDP remains committed to supporting this effort through partnership with the German Foreign Office.

In his words, “This partnership with the Ministry of Police Affairs is a significant stride towards elevating policing standards, supporting greater accountability, and fostering deeper collaboration for effective policing”. He said UNDP has expended $16 million over four years to build nine police barracks in the North East states which were fully equipped, rehabilitation of training centre in Jos, and training 400trainers to train about 20,000 trainees in the Nigeria Police Force.

As Nigerians congratulate Dr. Kayode Egbetokun on his confirmation as substantive Inspector General of Police (IGP) a few days ago by the Police Council, a security practitioner and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Badinson Security Limited, Mr. Matthew Ibadin has applauded the IGP's ingenuity even as he has reminded him of the tasks that require his urgent attention.
Ibadin who congratulated IGP Kayode Egbetokun on his confirmation also commended him for what he called the "robustness" of the recent three-day conference and retreat for senior police officers held in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The conference had attracted Deputy Inspectors General of Police, Assistant Inspectors General of Police, Commissioners of Police and Heads of Strategic Units in the Nigeria Police Force.

The Badison Security Chieftain in a press statement e-signed and released to Trek Africa Newspaper on Friday in Lagos described the Owerri event as unique and one of the best conferences and retreats ever organized for senior police officers in the Police Force.
Ibadin who personally attended the 3-days event, said the ingenuity of Egbetokun in putting strategies in place on how best to tackle some of the challenges facing the police has undoubtedly left great hope for a better policing in Nigeria under his watch.

Touching on a wide range of issues, Ibadin who trained in various aspects of private security over the years, has encouraged the IGP to evolve a system of redefining the roles of the Spy Police and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) so that the members of the two bodies would play higher and more effective role in crime fighting and intelligence. Buttressing his point, the Badison boss noted that since the Owerri conference and retreat centred largely on ways to map out new strategies to fight crimes in the country, it would be ideal to bring the Spy Police and PCRC members into playing more recognizable roles.

According to him, the Nigeria Police Force should learn to utilize the services of Spy Police particularly in investigation and other related activities since they were effectively trained by the same institution instead of leaving them to remain redundant with no meaningful role to play. Similarly, he argued that since most members of the PCRC volunteered to assist the police, the IGP should review the role of PCRC and make such role to come with value addition with respect to fighting crime and providing intelligence and not merely to attend meetings.
As way of increasing the financial strength of the Police Force beyond the statutory allocation that comes to it from the Federation account, the private investigator has urged Egbetokun to review certain services of the police with a view to commercializing them. He gave example of such services as the Police Printing Press, which he argued can be remodeled and equipped with modern printing machines to render commercial printing to members of the public. He also advised that individuals who need the personal protective services of Mobile Policemen should pay commensurately to the coffers of the police instead of the current abuse in the use of Mopol personnel.

Mr. Ibadin, an advocate of more funding for the police reiterated his earlier position that companies and multinationals operating in Nigeria should earmark some percentage of their budget for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to funding of police activities, just as he encouraged the citizenry to always show love to policemen particularly those who work under difficult conditions on the highways.

He further advised IGP Egbetokun to make his administration more inclusive by initiating a periodic stakeholders’ conference whereby members of the civil society interface with the IGP with a view to volunteering relevant security information that would help him in fighting crime.

Since Nigeria is having an increasing number of people who trained in private investigation, Ibadin said it would be ideal for IGP to evolve a system of engaging such private investigators in investigation activities while such private investigators should primarily be licensed in line with the Police Act, 2020.

While commending officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force for working with high degree of commitment in the most difficult environment, Ibadin argued that a country can do without the Military but no country can do without the police.

He therefore urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to create a special intervention fund for the Nigeria Police, as he insisted that the welfare of Police personnel should be paramount. He recalled that in the years past, policemen were usually provided with operational vehicles for investigation, and wondered why such practice is no longer possible.

While describing the Nigeria Police as one of the best police in the world "because they perform creditably without the necessary tools needed for effective policing, the security chieftain urged Government to provide the police with tracking device, bullet proof jackets and 24 hours light at the police station across the country. "There should also be laptop systems, people should be able to send their complaints through email platform through Zone, State Command, Area Command and Division Headquarters he said.

He noted further that crime is local, therefore investigation should be domesticated, he advised even as he called for increased funding of the Nigeria Police which previous governments neglected.

With respect to promotion in the Police Force, Ibadin urged the IGP to eradicate special promotion syndrome in the police and should reflect same in the Police Act during amendment.

1. Returning Nightshifters of all kinds
At any given time in any neighborhood in Lagos, Bakery/factory workers, hotel workers, including burglars, runs girls, can be seen patrolling the streets

2. Church workers To and Fro
Residents in Lagos or Ogun state, especially those living around major routes can attest to Church people movements overnight. This is common among workers at Canaanland whose vehicles dominate the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway on Sundays

3. Committee members with their Excos
Whether it be agberos at busstops, co-operative society under a canopy, Egbon adugbos drinking outside the gate, or social and political commentators at the news-stands, you can always spot the committee members with their chairman

Congratulations are in order for the 22nd substantive Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun who was confirmed for the role yesterday by the Police Council.

Sharing his congratulatory remarks with the National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP, the Consultant to the United States Embassy, Mogaji Busayo hailed the exceptional qualities of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D, NPM on his confirmation by the Police Council in Abuja. 'Congratulations to IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. We celebrate you', Mogaji said.

Busayo Mogaji, in his brief remarks, added that Nigeria's no. 1 cop, Egbetokun has demonstrated capacity since he assumed the office few months ago. He also appreciated the Police Council for identifying IGP's spirit and zeal to serve and lead the NPF to support the Nigerian government in achieving its renewed hope agenda.

The National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP) has congratulated Nigerian Police helmsman, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on his confirmation by the Nigerian Police Council as the substantive Inspector General of Police.

The confirmation is coming on the heels of the super cop's impressive performances over the past few months he has operated on acting capacity.

NAOSNP recognises your efforts, and conclude that no other deserve the commendation other than you at the period of our national history, and pray that God continues to strengthen you in your future endeavors towards obtaining the peace and security the country so much desire.

It would be recalled that Egbetokun, who was born on September 4, 1964 from the Egbado South Local Government Area of Ogun State, was appointed Acting IGP by President Bola Tinubu, on June 19, 2023. He replaced Baba Usman Alkali.

Egbetokun enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet ASP (Course 16) on March 3, 1990. He would clock 35 years in service by September 2024, according to police rules.

A Mathematician of repute, Egbetokun has served in various positions in the force, obtaining both professional and international exposure. 

In 1999, he assumed the role of Chief Security Officer to the then Governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu.

Egbetokun also served as the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, Squadron Commander of Mopol 5 in Benin City, Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Fraud Unit in the FCT Command in Abuja, Chief Superintendent of Police in the Administration at the Lagos State Command Headquarters in Ikeja, Area Commander in Osogbo, Osun State Command, and Area Commander in Gusau, Zamfara State Command at various times.

On September 29, 2020, he was promoted to the position of Commissioner of Police and was assigned to Kwara State.

In September 2022, he became an Assistant Inspector General of Police and was deployed to Zone 7 (Abuja).

Until his appointment as the Acting Inspector General of Police, he was the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), in-charge of Force CID, Abuja.
