Refusing to act stupidly or follow a lost cause is not cowardism. When Nzeogwu and his boys orchestrated the coup that exterminated leaders from all regions except the east and bragged about it in the media, which led to the installation of Aguyi ironsi who use military decree to created a unitary govt believing he will last in the seat, but the northern officers organised a counter coup which killed him.

Now having done that, Ogundipe is the most senior officer at the time and next inline to rule. But he was not a coup plotter, he never wanted a share of the tribal bloodshed between the Hausas and and Igbo.

He was not a power drunk. He decided to let the coup plotters enjoy the benefits of their Bloodshed's by installing their leader. Which led to the emergence of Gowon.
