Sports / 'I Also Have A Name!' – Varane Recalls Snapping At Ronaldo - PHOTOS by thrillsport: 10:00am On Jan 03, 2020 |
The Los Blancos defender stressed he wasn't being disrespectful, but rather showing character by calling out his former star teammate Raphael Varane recounted the occasion he snapped at Cristiano Ronaldo in Real Madrid training for not calling him by his first name, though he insists he was not disrespectful to the Portugal great. France international Varane has been at Madrid for almost nine years, having joined from Lens as a highly-rated teenager. As such, the centre-back was a long-time team-mate of Ronaldo at the Santiago Bernabeu, before the former Manchester United forward left for Juventus in 2018. Ronaldo is known for his often- intense personality and commitment in training, and Varane reminisced about the time he bit back at Los Blancos' then-talisman. "'Varane, go into the middle,'" Ronaldo is said to have barked, to which Varane claims he replied: "I'm not Varane, I'm Rapha!" But the 26-year-old says he was not showing Ronaldo a lack of respect, rather showing a bit of character. "It was not disrespectful," Varane told Onze Mondial . "I am super nice, I am great, even in the dressing room. I am also quite shy. "But when there are difficult times or when you have to show your character, you can count on me. The players who have known me for a while know this. "Of course, it's not the aspect of my character that you see the most or that you see first. It was not a matter of respect or disrespect, it was just a matter of, 'If I'm not seen, I'm not considered much.' "After that it was more like: 'Oh, I am also here, I also have a name.' It was more like that." Any issues with Ronaldo start and end there, however, with Varane lavishing his former colleague with praise for his achievements. "He's great, great, on a human level - and on a footballing level, I don't even have words anymore," Varane said. "He's accomplished something extraordinary: he made his incredible achievements seem banal. "And to do that…there are no words to explain it, it's huge, it's extraordinary. He taught me a lot and also surprised me. How many times have I said to myself: 'Wow, this is incredible.'" Varane recently also revealed the immense pressure that comes with playing for Real Madrid, noting even a draw for the club feels catastrophic .

Sports / Arteta's Signature Was All Over Arsenal In Manchester United Victory - Oliseh by thrillsport: 12:20pm On Jan 02, 2020 |
The Gunners secured their first home win in the English top- flight since October on New Year's Day Former Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh has praised Mikel Arteta's Arsenal for their technical and tactical prowess in their comfortable 2-0 win over Manchester United on Wednesday. First-half goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis Papastathopoulos gave the Gunners maximum points at the Emirates Stadium as they climbed to 10th in the Premier League table. The North London outfit put in a commanding performance to give Arteta his first win since he took over with a clean sheet. Messi: I would've loved Neymar to return to Barcelona After praising the team's collective hard work in the victory, Oliseh singled out Arteta's impact on Pepe, who was a threat to the Red Devils' defence in the opening 45 minutes. "Impressed by the tactical, technical and organised manner Arsenal went about their match today against Manchester United," Oliseh tweeted. "Victory well deserved in my opinion and kudos to coach Arteta! His signature was all over his team. Especially on Nicolas Pepe." Paul Pogba is expected to miss
Manchester United’s first game
of 2020 against Arsenal on
Wednesday night, amid reports
the club are frustrated with the
midfielder and his agent Mino
Raiola.
Pogba has played just twice off
the bench since recovering from
a long-term ankle injury
But he was not pictured with the
rest of the squad as they
boarded a train for London on
New Year’s Eve, and there was no
sight of him when they arrived at
their hotel in the capital.
And it is claimed Pogba will sit
out of the New Year’s Day clash
against the Gunners as he
continues his stint on the
sidelines.
Pogba’s last start for United came
back in September 30 against
Arsenal.
He was kept on the sidelines for
three months with an ankle
injury, and recently came off the
bench Watford and Newcastle,
before apparently claiming he
needed a break and sat out of
the Burnley game.
However, he then flew over to
France the following day to
support and watch his brothers
play in a charity game.
AFP OR LICENSORS

Pogba made a speech on the
pitch at a charity match in France
to raise money for clean water in
Africa
And the Daily Mail claim United
chiefs are ‘tired’ of the
midfielder’s antics after a
number of incidents that was
raised doubts over his
commitment to the club.
Pogba caused a stir earlier this
year when he was filming
playing basketball with Miami
Heat star Jimmy Butler while he
was supposed to be recovering
from ankle surgery, and after
delaying his return from injury
due to illness, he then posted a
video of himself danding at his
brother Florentin’s wedding in
Paris.
His agent, Raiola, has also been
vocal in his criticism of United
and their handling of his client in
recent weeks.
Alan Brazil suggests Paul Pogba
doesn't care about Man United
And in his latest rant about
United, he claimed the ‘out of
touch’ club would have ruined
the careers of football greats
Diego Maradona, Pele and Paulo
Maldini.
Pogba has been strongly linked
with a move away from Old
Trafford, but it is widely
understood he will be going
nowhere in January, although
links with Real Madrid and
Barcelona are unlikely to go away
before the transfer window
opens again in the summer.

Sports / Champions League Should Be Guardiola’s Next Priority, Xavi Claims - PHOTOS by thrillsport: 1:23pm On Jan 01, 2020 |
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will target the Champions League as Liverpool run away with the Premier League title, according to Xavi. City are eyeing a third consecutive Premier League crown under Guardiola, however, the defending champions are third and 14 points adrift of unbeaten rivals Liverpool – who have a game in hand – after 20 matches. Amid doubts over Guardiola’s long-term future in Manchester, former Barcelona star Xavi believes the Spaniard will prioritise the Champions League ahead of a blockbuster last-16 showdown against Real Madrid. “Pep is a born winner,” Al Sadd head coach Xavi, who played under Guardiola at Camp Nou, told The Mirror. “It will hurt him that Manchester City is so far behind Liverpool in the league – and he won’t give up. “He will be realistic though. The gap is a big one and at the moment it doesn’t look likely that they can make it three titles in a row. “With that in mind, I think there’s a big chance Pep will prioritise the Champions League. “They will be two big games coming up against Real Madrid – and maybe there will be a chance to rest players before these games that they wouldn’t have if they were in a title race. “Pep will want to win every trophy that he can – but if you’d asked him at the start of the season what he would prefer, I’m sure he would have said the Champions League. “He joked with Klopp that maybe Manchester City and Liverpool should swap trophies this year – but there was some truth in that joke, I think. “He’s won every trophy in England with Manchester City and he knows that winning the Champions League with them would take them to the next level as a club.” Guardiola’s City will kick off the New Year with a clash against Everton at the Etihad Stadium today.

Sports / Mourinho Accepts Tottenham Forwards Have Right To Be Frustrated (details)-photo by thrillsport: 10:17pm On Dec 31, 2019 |
Spurs’ surge up the table has been severely undermined by some horror shows at the back – no Premier League side have conceded more goals in all competitions since Mourinho arrived at the north London club in November. There is no problem at the other end as the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min have been firing, but Mourinho’s team would comfortably be sitting in the top four if they had defended properly. And the Portuguese knows the attacking stars are within their rights to wonder what is going on behind them. “The problem is the way we concede the goals and the way we play,” he said ahead of a New Year’s Day trip to Southampton. “But we have to improve. We concede too many goals and it is very frustrating. “If I was one of my attacking players I would be very frustrated that behind we are not able to stop it.” Despite their defensive fragility, Mourinho again reiterated that the way to cure it will be found on the training ground, not in the transfer market, with the window reopening on Wednesday. Tottenham Hotspur✔@ SpursOffici Jose: "It is very frustrating for us to create so much and to concede with so little." #THFC #COYS 1,8559:26 PM - Dec 28, 2019 Twitter Ads info and privacy 271 people are talking about this “January we have a little bit more time to work and with work we are going to try to improve,” he added. Spurs have at least improved their away form under the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss, having not won on the road since January prior to his arrival. They will face another stern test at St Mary’s on Wednesday, but Mourinho is encouraged by his side’s fighting spirit as they came from behind to earn points in the last two games. “Four matches away, we won two, we drew one and we lost one,” he said. “Is that better than before? Yes. Is it perfect? No. Danny Rose could be out for a further fortnight (John Walton/ PA) “So it is frustrating, but it is also a great feeling to know that the team never gives up, it is also a great feeling to know that even in the most difficult circumstances we go and we go and we go. “I want to praise that fantastic spirit.” Spurs will be without Danny Rose, who could be out for another fortnight with a muscle injury, though Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks are back in contention after suspension. Asked how long Rose will be out for, Mourinho replied: “I don’t know. I would guess, but maybe I am wrong, a couple of weeks. “But honestly I cannot tell you. We have Winks and Sissoko back from suspension and I don’t think we are going to have anyone back from injuries.” Topics

Sports / 'Zaha Is Not For Sale' - Hodgson Confident Of Retaining Chelsea Target - PHOTO by thrillsport: 9:53pm On Dec 31, 2019 |
The Ivory Coast international has been in fine form for the Eagles but has been the subject of speculation over a cross-city switch to Stamford Bridge Wilfried Zaha will not be available in the January transfer market, says Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson, as the club look to hold on to their prized attacker amid interest from Chelsea. The Ivory Coast international has been in fine form for the Eagles once again this term, several months on from previous speculation that he was set to exit Selhurst Park in pre-season. The 27-year-old handed in a transfer request then, only for the club to rebuff overtures from Arsenal and Everton for failing to meet their asking price, with the Blues now the latest club chasing his signature. "Wilfried Zaha is not for sale so I don't need any assurances [from the board]," he told Sky Sports News. "We are not trying to sell Wilfried Zaha. We want to keep Wilfried Zaha. "But what assurances can people give? I suppose I have the assurance there is no-one at the club anxious to sell Wilfried Zaha. "Of course, you never know where bids are going to come from and I suppose every time there is a serious bid for one of your players the board of directors need to take it seriously." Palace themselves will be expected to make several bids of their own during the mid-season window as they look to strengthen their own standing. They lie only eight points off the top four as it stands, yet only nine off the bottom three too. "Everyone is aware we need to strengthen because there are certain areas we don't have the cover or the competition that we need," Hodgson added. "I believe [the board] will be trying to help put that right but again, you can't get assurances. "You can only get people agreeing with you that this is what needs to be done and that this should be the next step going forward. "Hopefully that leads to some players coming through the door that will make the squad stronger and increase the competition."

Sports / Solskjaer Keen To Wrap Up Manchester United Early Christian Eriksen’s Deal PHOTO by thrillsport: 9:13pm On Dec 31, 2019 |
Reports have again suggested Manchester United will offer Christian Eriksen a move to Old Trafford in January. Eriksen has become a vital part of Mauricio Pochettino’s side over the past few seasons and is one of the creative reasons why they score so many goals throughout the course of the season, but there has been speculation that he could leave the club. It is believed that the Danish star has refused three contract offers from Spurs over the past few months, with the latest reportedly close to the £110,000-a-week mark, with the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Barcelona all keeping a close eye. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a firm favourite to the midfielder, and would love to add his creativity to a United side that is lacking in top-class talent. But according to the Daily Mail, United are ready to make a move for the Danish star in a bid to boost their Champions League hopes, with reports suggesting that United will even be open to offering around £42 million to complete a transfer deal. They know Tottenham are in a predicament, with Eriksen unwilling to sign a contract extension as he enters the final 12 months of his deal and it would mean he’d be free to talk to other clubs from January, meaning that United could seal a bargain move for the midfielder. Spurs don’t want to see the man leave, especially as they will not have an adequate replacement to fill the void, and goals, that he may leave, but at the end of the day he looks like a man that is ready to leave and that should be in January. Spurs need to get some money so they can go out and find an adequate replacement, and although he will be missed, £42 million goes along way to finding a decent midfielder.

Sports / Liverpool Boss Klopp Orders Scouting Reports On Striker Osimhen by thrillsport: 1:28pm On Dec 30, 2019 |
Liverpool are hoping to beat Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur as well as La Liga giants Barcelona to the signature of Lille goal poacher Victor Osimhen. Express UK is reporting that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is keen on signing the Nigeria international and has ordered scouting reports on the Lille number seven. Liverpool are looking to bolster their squad as Mohamed Salah has not lived up to his high standards this term, netting 13 goals across all competitions and on top of that, the Egyptian has been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid. Lille are unlikely to part company with one of their prized jewels, Osimhen in the January transfer window as they want to keep their squad together to secure a Champions League spot at the end of this season. The former Wolfsburg man impressed at Sporting Charleroi last term, earning himself a move to Lille in the summer, and continues to catch the eye in France, with 13 goals in 24 games. Osimhen has four and a half years remaining on his contract with Lille and is valued at 70 million euros by the French club.

Sports / Guardiola: Manchester City Already Preparing For Next Season by thrillsport: 12:46pm On Dec 30, 2019 |
The Spaniard says he is starting to switch his focus towards regaining the title from runaway leaders Liverpool next campaign. Pep Guardiola indicated Manchester City are already focusing on next season after accepting there is no longer a title race in the Premier League. Guardiola claimed his 100th league win as City boss on Sunday, as goals from Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne secured a 2-0 triumph over resilient Sheffield United. The win took City back to within a point of Leicester City, though they are still 14 behind runaway leaders Liverpool, who overcame Wolves 1-0 at Anfield. With the gap so large, Guardiola has accepted City are no longer realistic contenders for the title, which they have won for the last two seasons, and instead said the main focus is on ensuring they improve ahead of the 2020-21 season while targeting success in the cup competitions. "No. It's unrealistic to think about that," Guardiola said in a news conference when asked if Liverpool could be caught. His side were swiftly back in action after a 3-2 defeat to Wolves on Friday, meaning they had under 48 hours between the two matches. Guardiola said: "A team which has the numbers of Liverpool, why should we think about that? It's just preparing, play good and better to be as close to the top of the league as we can, prepare for the knockout competitions and for the next season. "Every game helps us to improve for next season. Hopefully we can do better. "The motivation is to improve because when we improve we win games and that is the way to live better. That is the best motivation for all of us. Even in the past. "Now we recover for three days, thank you for three days to recover, and prepare for the next game against Everton. That is what you have to do." Despite accepting the title race is all but over, Guardiola insists it should not take anything away from what his City squad have achieved. "The fans can say or do whatever they want but they cannot deny that the team in the last three years was incredible in every single competition," he added. "Football you can lose or you can win. We have injuries in very important positions but always we tried, even in the games we lost. "It was a tough game especially because of the opponent, because of the 48 hours, and two hours after the Wolves game on the bus back. "It's not the best for recovery against one of the most physical teams in the Premier League and we won it, so full compliments to the team."

Sports / ‘jurgen Klopp Could Take Rotherham To The Top, Pep Guardiola Couldn’t’ by thrillsport: 5:59pm On Dec 29, 2019 |
Paul Merson believes this
season has shown beyond
doubt that Jurgen Klopp is a
better football manager
than Pep Guardiola.
The German has led Liverpool
to a seemingly unassailable
lead in the Premier League,
with Guardiola’s Man City
languishing in third – 14
points adrift of the Reds.
Guardiola’s City have fallen
miles behind
In fact, Guardiola has
conceded defeat in the title
race following a dramatic
Christmas which saw the
Reds smash second-place
Leicester 4-0 while City lost
3-2 to Wolves.
And Merson believes
Liverpool’s dominance
should end the Klopp vs
Guardiola debate.
The former Arsenal star
claims Klopp is superior as
he has the skills which could
take a League One club like
Rotherham to the top, while
Guardiola only succeeds
when he spends big.
Klopp is on the cusp of
delivering Liverpool’s first
league title in 30 years
“Jurgen Klopp is proving to
Pep Guardiola this season
that he is the best manager
in the world,” Merson wrote
in his column for the Daily
Star.
“Liverpool made Leicester
look run of the mill. And it’s
all down to Klopp. He’s built
that team. And he’s beating
Guardiola even though he
hasn’t spent anywhere near
as much money.
“That’s what makes him the
best. Klopp could take
Rotherham through the
divisions and make them a
Premier League club, given
time.
“Guardiola can’t do that. He
needs £80m or £90m players
to make his system work.
Klopp doesn’t. It’s a massive
achievement, what he’s
built.” |
Sports / Most People Are Great Guys Or Great Coaches, But Klopp Is Both! - Boateng by thrillsport: 5:44pm On Dec 29, 2019 |
The former Borussia Dortmund
midfielder has seen up close how
the Liverpool boss operates, and
has not been surprised by his
success
Kevin-Prince Boateng says Jurgen
Klopp’s secret to success is
simple – the Liverpool boss is
not just a “great coach”, but also
a “great guy”.
Boateng spent a season on loan
at Borussia Dortmund early on in
Klopp’s tenure there, and has
since seen him go on to win
Bundesliga, Champions League
and Club World Cup titles among
others.
With Liverpool looking near
invincible in the Premier League
this season, Klopp’s star has
never been higher, and Boateng
is not the least bit surprised.
Editors' Picks
“He knows how to grab you,”
Boateng told Bild.
“I don't know how he does it,
but he can do it. I don't think
there is a player at Liverpool who
doesn't like him, even those who
don't play.
“It was the same in Dortmund.
That is what makes him special.
Therefore every team will give
everything for him.
“He is a great guy and also a
great trainer. Most of the time
you only have one or the other -
Klopp simply has both.”
Boateng has had a much-
travelled career, playing in four of
the top five European leagues –
in England, Germany, Spain and
Italy.
While trophies have not always
followed, he has won league
titles with AC Milan and
Barcelona, as well as the
2017-18 DFB-Pokal at Eintracht
Frankfurt.
Now 32, he is in Serie A with
Fiorentina, and appears to have
matured from the headline-
grabbing youngster he was once
seen as.
“I used to throw money out,
went partying. Now I'm learning
to play the piano,” he said.
“I've had five or six hours. I also
want to learn guitar later. These
are nice things that I enjoy and
help me to exercise patience.
“There are players who drive
Mercedes at 19 years old, get
their monthly salary and are
satisfied.
“You have so much talent and do
nothing for it, no extra training,
nothing. Just play PlayStation and
Instagram.
“It's okay, but they're the last to
come to training and the first to
leave. I used to do that too, but
nowadays you can't afford that
in football.”
Boateng and Fiorentina are
currently on a six-game winless
spell in Serie A, dropping down
to 15th in the table after being
hit by a serious ankle injury to
key man Franck Ribery. |
