That night, like every night, I joined my siblings for supper on the cold floor, plates in hand, half-listening to their chatter. Then it came—a whisper, barely there. "Help me." My spine froze, and time did too. My room dark, powerless, But something in me stirred. Courage, maybe. I moved slowly, heart pounding.And there he was. A boy. Young. Bleeding. Weak. A bullet wound to his leg and left rot behind. I didn't speak. I just pulled him out fed him what I could, and laid him back into hiding—fro. Where he cometh from, where I could pretend I hadn't found him. Morning came with a storm of thoughts. What if he’s a robber? What if he dies here? What if i called the police? the beginning of my end. I wrapped him in cloth and headed for the hospital. But at the bus stop, I saw the vigilante group—men with sticks and eyes sharp with judgment. Panic gripped me. I turned back. At home, I sought wisdom. My next-door neighbor—an elderly man, educated, once a UK resident. I spilled everything. Before he could answer, his wife cut in, "Bring am make we do wetin we dey do to thieves." She stormed out. My uncle, who lived next room over, wanted no part of it. “My family first,” he said. That was all.Alone, I stepped out—and met chaos. A crowd. My door. My secret exposed by my neighbour wife They dragged the boy out like a sack of guilt. My mother broke through them, shouting, shielding, and pleading. She didn’t know him. But her heart did. It broke—for another mother’s child. The crowd didn’t care. I stood there, still. Watching. Watching my silence become complicity. And then— I woke up. A dream. It's rain outside, but I can't explain why I was drenched in fear. Reality haunts my dream,The time is 3:00am, 9th April 2025. |
