The Kebbi State High Court 6, sitting in Birnin Kebbi, has ordered the immediate reinstatement of Alh Mustapha Haruna Jokolo as 19th Emir of Gwandu. Jokolo was dethroned as the Emir of Gwandu in Kebbi State in June 2005. In his ruling, the presiding judge, Justice Abbas Ahman said the deposition of the 19th Emir of Gwandu was contrary to law and that due process was not followed. The judge agreed with the submission of Jokolo and declared the appointment of the 20th Emir of Gwandu, as null and void and ordered Jokolo's immediate reinstatement as the 19th Emir. The judgment generated peaceful jubilation along Ahmadu Bello Way, Emir Haruna and many major roads in Birnin Kebbi Metropolis and in Gwandu town. The Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Justice, Alh Aminu Usman said the state government is studying the case adding that it is more likely that, the case may terminate at the Supreme Court since there is room for appeal. Alhaji Mustapha Jokolo was the Aide De Camp (ADC) to former Head of State, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, in 1983. Shortly after his retirement from the Nigerian Army as a Major, Jokolo ascended the throne of Gwandu Emirate as the Emir of Gwandu in July 1995 following the death of his father, Alhaji Haruna Al-Rasheed. But some years after Jokolo ascended the throne, he was deposed by the former Kebbi State governor, Adamu Aliero on June 3, 2005 and reportedly banished to Lafia. The state government had leveled three charges against him. Specifically, Jokolo was accused of making reckless statements capable of threatening national security and not in good terms with other traditional rulers in the state. He was also accused of abandoning his throne for Kaduna and at one time he allegedly relocated to Kaduna with his family. The then Kebbi State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Mohammed Audi Ambursa, who announced Jokolo’s dethronement in Birnin Kebbi explained that Aliero had acted on the basis of the powers conferred on him by section six of the Chiefs (Appointment and Deposition) law of the state. The state government wasted no time in appointing a new emir. Hence, it named Alhaji Muhammad Bashir Iliyasu as Jokolo’s successor. In his address to the people of Kebbi state same day, Ambursa gave many reasons that informed the state government’s decision to depose him. These among others "are that he is seen to be complex in character rather than the simplicity expected of his status. Reckless rather than honesty and decorum known for the institution he represents. In addition, he was said to be having high disregard and disrespect for constituted authority as represented by his travelling outside his domain without official permission from the state and or local governments." |

Gumi, EL-Zakzaky in war of words 0 By Our Reporter on December 11, 2014 National FROM ISMAIL OMIPIDAN, KADUNA A war of words yesterday broke out between two fiery Kaduna-bas e d Islamic scholars, Sheik Abubakar Mahmud Gumi and Sheik Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, with both sides calling each other unprintable names. Gumi, Daily Sun gathered, fired the first shot, when in a condolence letter, which later found its way to the media, on Tuesday, described El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, as a bad influence on Nigerian Muslims. While insisting that El- Zakzaky’s teachings about Islam and his mannerisms and those of his followers represent anything, but Islam, Gumi further said: “My Brother, you have already lost three children on this path to perdition, so please repent and don’t capitalise on the ignorance of our gullible youths to mislead them. If you don’t correct them now, when you die, Allah will not forgive you for whatever deviation they may add to yours.” Responding on behalf of El-Zakzaky yesterday, Ibrahim Usman, a member of the group’s media team said the letter did not take the group by surprise. He further said “the choice of the time to write the letter gave Dr. Gumi away, he was all out to attack Sheikh Zakzaky and the Arba’een symbolic trek currently taking place across the country. We are used to his constant attacks on Sheikh Zakzaky and Shi’a. “This is not the first time Dr. Gumi is complaining that members of the Islamic Movement led by Sheikh Zakzaky are blocking public roads in the name of procession. In 2009, Gumi registered the same complaint during his Tafsir in Sultan Bello Mosque. He went ahead dangerously to call on the government to shoot those he called ‘Shi’ites’ blocking public roads. “According to him, Allah has given the government the ‘license to shoot them.’ And the government heeded to the call. A week after, armed combined security operatives shot two people during the Quds Day procession in Zaria. The series of machinations by the government against the Islamic Movement in Nigeria had always been with the tacit support of Dr. Gumi and his adherents. “We believe that the letter was written with insidious intent to pave way for a greater onslaught on the Islamic Movement and Sheikh Zakzaky. It was also meant to incite Muslims against those he referred to as ‘Shi’tes.’ The world arrogant powers, U.S. and Israel, are now all out to assassinate Sheikh Zakzaky and unleash terrorist attacks on all public gatherings of the Movement, especially the Arba’een symbolic trek. “This is exactly what Dr. Gumi is doing through the letter. He is doing their dirty work. For Dr. Gumi who has lost credibility even among his circle to claim that the Shi’ites are chanting ‘hate songs,’ is the pot calling the kettle black. |

THE Lagos State Government says it has started massive grading and surface dressing of its inner roads. It added that the work would complement the over 300 road construction going on across the state. The Commissioner for Rural Development, Cornelius Ojelabi, during an inspection of some of the roads at the Iba Local Council Development Area, said the government decided to grade the roads as a palliative measure. He added that the state government could not immediately construct new roads in the areas due to paucity of funds. He said, “Presently, the state has over 9,000 roads that need to be constructed or upgraded, but the funds are not available. As a result, the government is constructing roads in phases with available resources. “But the governor approved that the roads should be made motorable for the people by grading them to make commuting easier.” He said the grading of roads would be done in all the five divisions of the state. He added that over 100 roads were expected to be graded at the end of the first phase of the exercise. The commissioner also urged residents of the areas to protect the roads by channeling their wastewater properly into the soakaway in their homes, instead of channeling it to the roads. “No amount of money spent to construct or grade will show if people don’t desist from the unwholesome habit of channeling wastewater to the roads,” he said. Ojelabi urged community leaders to ensure that residents channel their wastewater appropriately. The commissioner was at Adolph Road, Oduduwa Street, Funsho Bakare Street, Akanni Ogundare Street, Olubiyi Street, Orelope Street and Lateef Ogunyoro Street, among others, to inspect the level of work done on the road grading.
