A Nigerian journalist, Fejiro Oliver, is missing after travelling from his Asaba base to Abuja allegedly on the invitation of the Secretary to the Niger State Government, SSG, Saidu Ndako, on Friday. Mr. Oliver, who is the Managing Editor of an online news medium, Daily Voice NG, was said to be working on a story on the activities of the Niger State government. PREMIUM TIMES learnt that he called Israel Ebije, the spokesperson to Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger, to seek the governor’s version of events in the story. Mr. Ebije reportedly referred him to Mr. Ndako. According to Mr. Ejiro’s wife, she last spoke with her husband on Friday while he was in Abuja to honour an appointment at the instance of Mr. Ndako. Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES over the telephone on Sunday, Mrs. Oliver said, “We were together when he received a call and he told me that the SSG of Niger state insisted that he should go over to Minna so that they can meet.” She said her husband insisted that he would not go to Minna, but would meet with the SSG and Mr. Ebije in Abuja “for security reasons”. Also speaking, the father of the missing journalist, Godwin Oliver, said his son has been missing since Friday after travelling to Abuja to meet with the Niger officials. “We have been trying to reach him but he has not been picking his calls. After sometime, the calls are either rejected or the phones are switched off and then put on back after sometime,” he said. The senior Oliver said he planned to “go to all relevant security agencies by tomorrow (Monday) to report the matter since today is Sunday”. A close friend of Mr. Fejiro and human rights activist, Inibehe Effiong, also issued a statement on Saturday stating that Mr. Oliver had carried out an extensive investigation into the activities of the Niger State Government under Mr. Aliyu. “After his investigation, he formally sought the response of the Niger State Government by contacting the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Saidu Idris Ndako Kpaki and the Chief Press Secretary to the Niger State Governor, Mr Israel A. Ebije. “Instead of responding to the issues pertaining to the alleged corrupt practices of governor Babangida Aliyu, the CPS, Mr. Ebije in an electronic mail he sent to Fejiro Oliver threatened and warned him to desist from going public with the report (the outcome of his investigations),” Mr. Effiong said. He said the publication that Mr. Oliver works for, Daily Voice NG, few days ago wrote an editorial intimating security agencies and the general public of the threat to the life of Mr Oliver by the Niger State Government through Mr. Ebije. Mr. Effiong also said as at the last time contacts were made with the journalist, “he was in Abuja for the sole purpose of meeting with the SSG”. “We have reasons to believe that his incommunicado state or sudden disappearance has everything to do with his scheduled meeting with the Secretary to the Niger State Government, Alhaji Saidu Idris Ndako Kpaki. “We are therefore assuming based on the above facts that the SSG is in the know about Mr. Fejiro’s whereabouts,” he said. Efforts to speak with the SSG, Mr. Ndako, were unsuccessful. He did not answer calls to his two mobile telephone lines. He also did not respond to a text message sent to him. In his version of events, Mr. Ebije confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Oliver had contacted him regarding a story he was working on. He however denied threatening Mr. Oliver, but, rather “advised him to come to Minna and see for himself if the allegations against the governor are true or not. “In Niger state everything is done transparently and we have nothing to hide. The documents he is claiming to have are executive council decisions which were obviously given to him by an aggrieved official who has been relieved of his appointment,” the spokesperson said. Mr. Ebije said he was in Abuja for an official function and “cannot confirm if he (Mr. Oliver) is with our people or not until probably tomorrow (Monday). Editor’s Note: This story has been edited to reflect that the missing journalist traveled from his home in Asaba, Delta state, not Port Harcourt in Rivers state. www.pijango..com/2014/09/nigerian-journalist-missing-after.html#more |
About 700 displaced persons from Gwoza, Chibok, Bama in Borno State and its environs have fled to Kwubaru village, in Karu Local Government of Nasarawa State. The refugees who include men, women and children are divided into three different camps of Kwubaru, Angwar Jama’a and Takwa. They have been relocating to the village since March this year, in a bid to flee the troubled North-eastern part of the country. Since their arrival, the no government agency has acknowledged their presence or sent relive materials. They have had to survive on contributions from well meaning Nigerians and hand me downs from their host community. The only recognition accorded to them by the government according to their leaders was when they arrived and soldiers came in trucks and Hilux vans to harass them and arrest the Chief of Kwubaru for harbouring them. In the Kwubaru camp for example, women and children are the only ones that sleep in any one of the nine mud houses and they can be as many as 12 people or more in one room while the men sleep on sacks and mats outside even under the rain. Members of the #BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) advocacy visited the camp on a humanitarian visit to confirm the existence of internally displaced persons close to Abuja and donate relieve materials which included foodstuffs, clothing, blankets and mattresses Leader of the refugees and former Headmaster of Ghwaa primary school, Gwoza, Mallam Yohanna Wurawa explained that he escaped Gwoza with his family after his house and school was burnt down to the refugee camp in Cameroon. Eventually, he said, his family and a few others were assisted by the Stephanus foundation to Kwabaru. Leader of the BBOG Hajia Saudatu Mahdi said that the group had visited the refugees as part of their humanitarian effort and to establish the fact that there is truly Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) since the government denied knowledge of them. Saudatu promised that they group will write to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons to notify them of the presence of the refugees and the need to come to their assistance immediately. www.pijango..com/2014/09/boko-haram-700-refeeges-from-gwoza-flee.html

Nigerian troops might have scored a strategic victory in the current battle against terrorists operating in the North East on September 17. During a desperate attempt to capture Konduga in their delusion to eventually marching on and capturing Maiduguri, the man who had been mimicking Late Abubakar Shekau in recent videos might have been finally killed. Abubakar Shekau According to senior military and intelligence sources, "it is getting more certain that the terrorists' commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014." The PRNigeria sources said the suspected demise of the Boko Haram leader is responsible for the scattering of the sect members in different independent locations in the neighbouring countries, especially in Cameroon noticed in recent days. The security sources did not deny the suspicion but cautioned that "the process of confirming that the dead body we have is the same as that character who has been posing as Shekau is ongoing. He is definitely a prominent terrorist commander. I don't want to say anything about this yet please." Another high ranking military source insisted that the resemblance is too striking to be a coincidence. They cited his facial marks, beards and teeth apart from the recovery by the Nigerian troops of some of the Armoured Vehicles and Hilux jeeps that had featured in previous videos of the prime suspect. The officers assured that the Defence Headquarters will soon address the nation after full investigation of their latest discovery. www.pijango..com/2014/09/shekau-finally-dead-by-prnigeria.html |
Looks like T.B Joshua won't be addressing the bribery allegation against him any time soon..,Instead, he has put out a condolence message to all those who lost their lives in the unfortunate Synagogue building collapse. He calls them Martyrs of faith ,,,, During his sunday church service today he said this below.. CONDOLENCE SPEECH - T.B. JOSHUA "Church and viewers from all over the world, join me in observing one minute silence in memory of martyrs of faith. Bless their souls. Those who are affected in one way or the other and those who passed on to glory, their greatest desire is to see that the work of salvation they died and suffered for continues and to reach unreachable places. For that, what they are coming here for should be taken to meet them in their country. Once in a month, I will be travelling to South Africa to meet people from South Africa and other nations who find South Africa easier to visit, in memory of martyrs of faith. South Africa, I mean, Southern Africa, I love you with the love of God. "My ministration in South Africa will not be on Sundays so that people would have the opportunity to attend their respective churches. This kind of faith expressed by South Africans deserves this kind of blessing from God – satan is a liar.I have been your pastor, preaching to you. Now, it is your turn that you are preaching to me. Thank you for preaching to me. I received a lot of emails and text messages full of preaching, teaching, counseling from you. "It is your turn that you are giving back what you have received in terms of preaching, teaching and counseling. Thank you for understanding the time I am in.There is a time to give and a time to receive. There is a time to run and a time to slow awhile. There is a time to laugh and a time to cry. There is a time to be born and a time to die." www.pijango..com/2014/09/tb-joshua-to-visit-south-africa-every.html |

In a desperate effort to bring the outbreak under control, thousands of health care workers began going house to house in crowded urban neighborhoods and remote villages, hoping to find and isolate infected people. President Ernest Bai Koroma urged his countrymen to cooperate. "The survival and dignity of each and every Sierra Leonean is at stake," he said Thursday night in an address to the nation. Health officials said they planned to urge the sick to leave their homes and seek treatment. There was no immediate word on whether people would be forcibly removed, though authorities warned that anyone on the streets during the lockdown without an emergency pass would be subject to arrest. More than 2,600 people have died in West Africa over the past nine months in the biggest outbreak of the virus ever recorded, with Sierra Leone accounting for more than 560 of those deaths. Many fear the crisis will grow far worse, in part because sick people afraid of dying at treatment centers are hiding in their homes, potentially infecting others. However, international experts warned there might not be enough beds for new patients found during the lockdown, which runs through Sunday. Most people seemed to be taking the order seriously, and there were no immediate reports of resistance. "It will protect our country from this dangerous virus," said Ishmail Bangura, a Freetown resident. "Many of our people have died - nurses and doctors, too - so if they ask us to stay home for three days, for me it is not bad." Across West Africa, health care workers have been attacked by villagers who accused them of spreading Ebola. Some citizens have also violently resisted efforts to quarantine them. As the lockdown took effect, wooden tables lay empty at the capital's usually vibrant markets, and only a dog scrounging for food could be seen on one normally crowded street in Freetown. Amid the heat and frequent power cuts, many residents sat on their front porches, chatting with neighbors. Ambulances were on standby to bring any sick people to the hospital for isolation. The health care workers also planned to hand out 1.5 million bars of soap and dispense advice on Ebola. "We hope and pray that when we talk to people they will take it as counseling," said Rebecca Sesay, a community Ebola education team leader. "That is why we are all out here." The World Health Organization said it has no record of any previous nationwide shutdown of this scale and suggested it has not happened since the plague devastated Europe during the Middle Ages. The closest parallel seems to have been a plague scare in India in 1994, when officials closed off a region around the city of Surat, shutting down schools, offices, movie theaters and banks. UNICEF said the government campaign provides an opportunity to tell people how to protect themselves. "If people don't have access to the right information, we need to bring lifesaving messages to them, where they live, at their doorsteps," said Roeland Monasch, UNICEF representative in Sierra Leone. In a statement, the U.N. children's agency said the operation needs to be carried out "in a sensitive and respectful manner." U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the General Assembly on Friday that the U.N.'s new force to fight Ebola, the U.N. Mission for Ebola Emergency Response, or UNMEER, will be headquartered in Accra, Ghana and will have offices in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. "The mission will ... emphasize community outreach, training and education," Ban said. "Misunderstandings about the disease and how it is transmitted have hindered the response. Local leaders, including traditional and religious leaders, have important roles to play in raising awareness." In the latest case of violence against health care workers, six suspects have been arrested in the killings of eight people in Guinea who were on an Ebola education campaign, the Guinean government said Friday. The victims were attacked by villagers armed with rocks and knives. The dead included three local journalists. www.pijango..com.es/2014/09/sierra-leone-commences-three-day.html?m=1 |
The rescue of the girl, Zama, came to light when Sheik Mohammed Jamie, a GOTG representative in Nigeria, was searching for a woman whose daughter had contacted them for help, founder Imtiaz Sooliman said. "A friend of Jamie's went first to the hospital on Wednesday to find one guy, and he was kicked out [by hospital staff]. Jamie himself then went to the same hospital later on Wednesday evening." He was also asked to leave the hospital. On Thursday morning, the South African embassy supplied Jamie with the names of five hospitals where South Africans were possibly being treated.Contin..... The second hospital on that list was the Subol hospital in Lagos, which Jamie and his friend had been asked to leave on Wednesday. Sooliman said when Jamie entered Subol hospital again, staff were helpful. While there, several South Africans recognised Jamie from the Gift of the Givers T-shirt he was wearing. "That's when he was pointed at and there they [the South Africans] spoke to him," Sooliman said. "He asked if they needed anything and they said 'We haven't spoken to our family. We are injured but okay. Some of us are going to be discharged soon'." This was when one woman who had been rescued relayed the story of Zama. "She is still at the hospital," Sooliman said of Zama. It was not known whether Zama's parents had survived the collapse or not. Sooliman said both South African embassy officials and local authorities were doing their best to help. However, he had heard reports that church members had attacked and thrwe stones at rescue workers and members of the public trying to help at the collapse site. SABC radio news reported the number of South Africans killed in the building collapse had increased from 67 to 84. "The number has risen to 84," South Africa's high commissioner to Nigeria, Lulu Louis Mnguni, told the SABC in an interview on Friday morning. He said the search for those unaccounted for had been called off. Those people were now presumed dead. "The search has come to a conclusion. There were still 17 bodies outstanding," said Mnguni. President Jacob Zuma announced on Tuesday that 67 South Africans were killed when the church's multi-storey guest house collapsed on Friday. On Thursday, authorities said another 17 South Africans were still missing. A total of 349 South Africans were in Lagos on church business when the disaster occurred. Of these, 265 were found alive. www.pijango..com.es/2014/09/4yr-old-south-afrian-girl-found-alive.html?m=1

President Goodluck Jonathan promised yesterday that by next month, the security challenge posed by members of the Boko Haram sect who have engaged in massive killing and wanton destruction of property would change drastically. This is just as the troops have killed 60 of the insurgents. Speaking yesterday at the 66th National Executive Committee, NEC of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, President Jonathan who admitted that the nation’s greatest challenge was that of insecurity, stressed that what obtains presently in Nigeria has gone beyond terror, but plans to secede where members of Boko Haram want to install their own leadership. Commiserating with victims of killings in Kaduna and Kano states, the President disclosed that he would be attending the United Nations General Assembly summit on Global Terrorism which all the super powers would attend. He said: “Nigeria is having an unfair share. Terror is a global problem, and Nigeria situation is going beyond terror. When terrorists think about holding ground, attempting to install leadership, it is no longer terrorism, it is almost like going into the line of succession. Between now and October, things will change. He appreciated the Senate and the entire National Assembly for their statement and joining the government in this regard, promising to bring it to an end. Meanwhile, following the regrouping of Boko Haram terrorists and a second attack on Konduga town by the insurgents on Wednesday night, the Nigerian Army said another 60 insurgents were killed in the battle that ensued. After the confrontation which lasted from 4pm to 8pm, several military hardware recovered from the insurgents included 13 AK-47 rifles, five RPGs, two General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs) and one anti-aircraft gun. Two Ford Ranger pick-up vehicles that could be used to mount anti-aircraft attack ordnance were also recovered. http://www.pijango..com/?m=1 |
THE World Health Organisation has raised the alarm that desperate patients of the Ebola Virus Disease are buying the blood of survivors of the virus from the black market. Blood from survivors, referred to as convalescent serum, is said to have antibodies that can fight the deadly virus, hence the rush for the blood of survivor in the worst hit countries. Though unproven, it has provided some promise in fighting a disease with no approved drug to treat the dreaded disease. The current Ebola outbreak, said to be the deadliest in history, has killed at least 2,400 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The three West African countries have been the most affected by the virus. New cases have also emerged in Nigeria and Senegal, though authorities in Nigeria said the country had successfully battled the scourge. The WHO on Thursday said, “Studies suggest blood transfusions from survivors might prevent or treat Ebola virus infection in others, but the results of the studies are still difficult to interpret. “It is not known whether antibodies in the plasma of survivors are sufficient to treat or prevent the disease. More research is needed.” Convalescent serum has been used to treat patients, including American aid worker Rick Sacra, who is hospitalised in Omaha, Nebraska. He got blood from Kent Brantly, a fellow American who survived Ebola. Both got infected when they were helping patients in Liberia. But unlike the situation of the Americans, patients in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone are said to be procuring blood through improper channels thus raising fears that the illicit trade can lead to the spread of other infections, including HIV and other blood-related ailments. “We need to work very closely with the affected countries to stem out black market trading of convalescent serum for two reasons,” the CNN quoted the WHO’s Director-General, Margaret Chan, as saying this week. “Because it is in the interest of individuals not to just get convalescent serum without going through the proper standard and the proper testing because it is important that there may be other infectious vectors that we need to look at,” Chan added. Heath experts have declared the EVD a global emergency and criticised the international community for a lax response. United States President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced that the US would send troops, material to build field hospitals, additional health care workers and community care kits to affected nations. The US will also create a facility to help train thousands of health care workers to identify and care for Ebola patients, Obama said, stressing, “Men and women and children are just sitting, waiting to die right now.” Hospitals in affected nations are overwhelmed, and the WHO has described the outbreak as a “dire emergency with unprecedented dimensions” of human suffering. “If the outbreak is not stopped now, we could be looking at hundreds of thousands of people infected with profound political and economic and security implications for all of us,” Obama said. There is also a concern that the virus could mutate into an even more dangerous form. Ebola currently transmits only through contact with bodily fluids; a mutation that allows the virus to spread through the air would pose a catastrophic threat to people worldwide, experts have said. http://www.pijango..com/?m=1 |

The Anambra House of Assembly on today September 11th passed a bill, changing the name of the state-owned university at Uli to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. The bill was passed during the plenary of the legislature in Awka to honour the former Biafra hero. The decision followed the report of the House Committee on Education which recommended the change of the name. Mrs Rita Maduagwu (APGA Nnewi South 2), the Chairman, House Committee on Education, recalled that the bill had been read the second time on the floor of the house on Dec. 17, 2013. She said that the committee found that the university’s name had been changed before from Anambra State University of Science and Technology and that there were a number of provisions in the extant law that required review. “After due consideration of facts and information, the committee recommends that the law establishing the university be repealed while a new law aimed at amending the principal law be passed,” Maduagwu said. Mr Valentine Ayika (PDP Njikoka1) said that the bill was due for passage since it was read second time in December 2013. Mr Tony Muonagor (APC Idemili North) said that the aim was to immortalise the late Ojukwu and to encourage hard work among the people of the state and Nigeria at large. Mr Ebele Obi (APC Idemili South) said that the passage was a welcome development. Mr Obinna Emenakaya (APGA Anambra East) said that the application for the change of name was long over-due since it was meant to immortalise a man who fought and lived for the Igbo people. The Speaker, Mrs Chinwe Nwaebili, said that the university would be a multi-campus institution located in Awka, Igbariam and Uli. She said members of the committee on education did a good work and urged others to prove their worth on any assignment given at committee level or otherwise www.pijango..com/2014/09/anambra-state-universityuli-renamed.html

This is according to Cadell Last, a researcher at the Global Brain Institute, who claims mankind is undergoing a major 'evolutionary transition'. In less than four decades, Mr Last claims we will live longer, have children in old age and rely on artificial intelligence to do mundane tasks.Instead of living fast and dying young, Mr Last believes humans will live slow and die old.Your 80 or 100 is going to be so radically different than your grandparents,' Mr Last says By 2040, cabs will be driven by Google robots, shops will become showrooms for online outlets and call centres will be staffed by intelligent droids. That’s the scenario depicted in recent research which suggests robots could be taking over our lives and jobs in less than 30 years. The competition for work caused by a rise in the robots population will see us heading to surgeons for ‘additional processing power for our brains’, We may also be requesting bionic implants for our hands that will make us able to perform tasks as fast as any machine.Futurologists, commissioned by global job search website xpatjobs.com, say workers will have less job security and will work more unsociable hours. Those who take these risks and innovate with their own bodies will be the biggest earners in 2040, they claim. However, the study added that workers may be left with poor eyesight, smaller sexual organs, and constantly-furrowed brows as they struggle to keep up to life in the 21st century. www.pijango..com/2014/09/by-2050-completely-new-type-of-human.html

Read Report below This indication emerged Tuesday when the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina called for competent regulations that would check the consumption and sale of the product. If this is achieved, he noted that livestock farmers would stand good chances of making high dollar return if the hides and skins (Ponmo) are tanned into leather. The minister who was represented at the occasion by the Director, Animal Production and Husbandry in the Ministry, Dr. Ademola Raji, said, "I also commend NIAS for its advocacy and public enlightenment programs on Radio and Television that promote value addition in Livestock, as against sale and consumption of primary products alone, particularly with the issue of curtailing the widespread consumption of hides and skins as Kpomo which ought to be tanned into leather for a very high dollar return to the farmer and Tanneries. I expect that competent regulations acceptable by all stakeholders will be developed so as to give credibility that our set standards for food safety are being implemented which will boost value addition.” www.pijango..com.es/2014/09/fg-set-to-ban-ponmo.html?m=1
