President of the Senate Senator David Mark literarily broke down and struggled to fight back tears as the news of the death of The Guardian Assistant Political Editor John Abba -Ogbodo filtered into town. Senator Mark in an unusual subdued voice lamented the untimely demise of Ogbodo whom he described as an accomplished Journalist and a worthy son of Benue State. The President of the Senate noted that late Ogbodo was a vibrant, versatile and resourceful Journalist who was professionally minded at all times. He said ” I feel so devastated. Ogbodo was like my son. Our relationship became stronger and cemented when I met him in the National Assembly as a Journalist, of course, being my relation and a member of my constituents, it was like home away from home for both of us. “Death is an inevitable end. We don’t plan for it . It must come when it shall. But frankly speaking, this is one death so cruel. ” I sincerely sympathized with the immediate family, the Guardian house and the entire Nigerian media for this painful loss. Senator Mark noted that added value to the practice of journalism in Nigeria saying he was a man of very high moral standing, who was well guided by the ethics of the pen profession. He added that late Ogbodo died in the line of duty and urged the Press to uphold the virtues of hard work, sincerity and commitment to the ideals of nation hood which Ogbodo stood for. |
ABUJA— President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the appointment of vice chancellors and registrars for the three newly established federal universities in Kebbi, Yobe and Zamfara states. Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, who disclosed this in Abuja, Tuesday, said the new vice chancellors include Professor Shehu AbdulRahman, Federal University Gashua; Professor Lawal Bilbis; Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, and Professor Ben Okeke, Federal University, Gusau. She said the President also approved the appointment of Professor Isaac Asuzu to replace Prof. Chinedu Nebo the new Minister of Power, as Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti. Professor Rufa’i said Registrars for the new universities were Alhaji Sule Dauda, Federal University, Gashua; Mr. Ibrahim Mungadi, Federal University, Birnin Kebbi; and Mr. Ibrahim Bawa Kaura, Federal University, Gusau. |

President of the Senate, Senator David Mark has urged Christians to use the period of lent to pray for the peace and unity of Nigeria. Senator Mark in a goodwill message to Christians to mark the commencement of this year’s Lenten season noted that peace and security are the most needed ingredients in the country today. He added that the period of lent according to Christian doctrine requires prayers, fasting and giving alms to the needy, saying “we should be our brothers keeper at all times. “These are the three pillars of lent, which every Christian is expected to uphold”; Senator Mark stated. He canvassed for religious harmony between and amongst religious groups, saying that only a peaceful Coexistence could engender progress. Senator Mark who led the Federal government delegation to watch the final of the 2013 African cup of Nations in South Africa, was pleased that the victory of the super Eagles has offered the needed elixir and tonic to boost the peace and unity of Nigeria. He praised the Stephen Keshi tutored boys for the successes at continental championship saying the nation owes them a great measure of gratitude. ” You deserve our honour and praise. The Senate is to carry out further legislative work (amendment) on the National Health Bill to make all embracing on all health matters. This is because some aspects of health matters especially in the area of renal diseases such as kidney, liver and heart were not covered in the initial bill, yet to be accented by Mr. president. Senate President, David Mark said when he played host to the Executive of the Nigerian Association of Nephrologists(NAN) that public hearing on the new NHIS would be held on next Monday in the National Assembly. Senator Mark told his guests that the Senate is very mindful of all issues of health and “anything we can do by way of legislation to improve health care delivery in Nigeria would not be compromised”. He harped on the need for all health providers to work in harmony in order to provide effective and quality health care services to the citizenry. Earlier, the President of Nigerian Association of Nephrologists (NAN) Professor Evelyn Unuigbe raised alarm at the increasing rate of Chronic kidney diseases in the country expectantly among the youth between the ages of 25 and 40 years. According to Unuigbe, “Although, there are no accurate data and no national renal registry on Nigeria, data from small scale community studies have found that the prevalence of CKD in adults ranges from 19% to 30%”. She added that hospital data show that advanced CKD account for 6-12% of medical admissions Unuigbe advocated for the establishment of National Renal Institute which will be a center of excellence for Renal care in Nigeria. She also requested the National Assembly to amend the NHIS bill to accommodate problem of renal diseases. The NAN President charged Nigerians to adopt some preventive measures such as avoiding excessive weight gain, reduce salt consumption, exercise regularly, avoid the use of bleaching creams and soaps and should have regular medical checks at least once a year. source:gavel24.gov.ng |
President of the Senate, Senator David Mark has charged media practitioners to do more in reportage of legislative activities in order to educate Nigerians about the functions and constitutional roles of the parliament that is largely misunderstood. Senator Mark said when he played host to the management of the Nigeria Television Authority, (NTA) in his office in Abuja that the Parliament is misunderstood on account of under reportage of its functions and roles as an arm of government. The management of NTA led by the acting Director-General, Musa Mayaki briefed the President of the Senate on the coming on stream of its parliamentary channel solely devoted to the coverage of parliaments in the country from the legislative arm of the local government councils to the 36 state houses of Assembly to the National Assembly. According to Mark,”Democracy dictates that the electorate have a right to know what their elected representatives do. It is only through the media that the people are properly informed. Therefore, the media should go beyond the ordinary and report the activities of the legislative houses in the country”. Senator Mark also reminded media practitioners to always be guided by its professional ethics and respect for human rights which prescribes objectivity, fairness, balance and justices to all concern. Irrespective of pressures from some sections of the international community and human rights activists demanding the legalization of same sex marriage in Nigeria, President of the Senate Senator David Mark has insisted that that the bill prohibiting same sex marriage is irrevocable. Besides banning the same sex marriage, Senator Mark said it is now a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment of not less than 14 years. Addressing, Catholic faithful and guests at the civic reception in honour of the Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyean in Abuja at the weekend he said In spite of the pressures from some quarters, the law has come to stay. The President of the Senate said: “We will not compromise on this. I want to invite you all to join the crusade of decency in our society. There are many good values we can copy from other societies but certainly not this one (same sex marriage). “We have to prove to the rest of the world, who are advocates of this unnatural way that we Nigerians promote and respect sanity, morality and humanity. Every individual is a product of the union of a man and woman”. He acknowledged the cordial relationship between the Nigerian State and the Church and pledged that the National Assembly will continue to do all within the law to ensure religious freedom and peaceful co-existence in the country. Senator Mark added that the National Assembly will continue to support religious programmes that have positive bearing on Nigerians but was quick to condemn in the strongest possible terms religious intolerance or extremism. He therefore enjoined spiritual leaders to continue to pray for good governance, peace and security which are major challenges in our society today. On his part, he stressed “we are doing our best to ensure protection of life and property”. In his remarks, Cardinal Onaiyekan expressed appreciation to the Pope Benedict xii , the government and people of Nigeria for their prayers and support especially since his elevation to the Collage of Cardinals , saying he will continue to be a crusader for peace and unity of the nation where every citizen have a sense of belonging. Earlier, chairman of the reception organizing committee Rev.
