The President and Founder, Oodua People’s Congress, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, has ordered his members in Lagos and the South-West to collaborate with security operatives to launch a manhunt for the kidnapped Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan. Fasehun, who made the call in a statement on Tuesday, demanded the immediate release of the council chairman. Bamigbetan, former Chief Press Secretary to former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu was abducted around 11.30pm on Monday while returning from work. Fasehun said, “We just heard about this unfortunate incident, which has filtered through Lagos State and is all over the Internet. Kehinde Bamigbetan is our son, a Yoruba man. “Whoever touches any Yoruba man touches the apple of OPC’s eye and will pay dearly.” He asked OPC leaders, including the National Secretary, Mr. Dare Adesope, to make phone calls and call meetings with the organisation’s leadership in Ejigbo for information, in order to guarantee Bamigbetan’s safe return to his family. “We warn whoever is behind this evil act that Bamigbetan must be released unharmed. Not one strand of his hair must be hurt,” he said. He recalled that OPC had helped secure the release of kidnap victims in the past, saying that Bamigbetan’s kidnappers had made the worst mistake of their evil career. He said the OPC in October 2012 assisted in the rescue of Muibat, wife of the Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, resulting in the death of two of her abductors. Also earlier in September last year, OPC had also launched a silent effort that detected the bodies of slain NNPC engineers earlier sent to effect repairs on vandalised pipelines at Arepo, Ogun State, as well as their suspected killers. http://www.punchng.com/news/fasehun-orders-opc-manhunt-for-abducted-bamigbetan/ |

It was gathered that the abductors warned her (wife) not to involve the police or play any pranks as well as blow the issue out of proportion, and warned that any attempt to flout their directive could be grievous. Bamigbetan was said to have been kidnapped by four gunmen on his way home from an event, after the close of work, as he was about entering his street, Ona Iwa Mimo Street in Ori Oke before Egbe Bridge in Ejigbo on Monday night at about 11Pm. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/abductors-of-bamigbetan-ejigbo-lcda-boss-demand-1m-ransom/ |

Banks in the country would be required to appoint at least 30 per cent female board members and 40 per cent management staff, as from next year, the Governor of the Central Bank, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has revealed. The governor who spoke at the Annual Isaac Moghalu Foundation, IMOF, lecture and symposium, in Abuja, yesterday, said the decision was taken with a view to stimulating women’s participation in development and nation building. According to him, it was “agreed that by 2014 at least 30 per cent of the board seats in Nigerian banks will be held by women and at least 40 per cent of senior management positions will be held by women. “This year we require that all banks when they publish their statement of accounts, every bank must publish its gender positions, even the Central Bank will not be exempted from this, there is a lot of public pressure on these institutions that fall behind to make them to catch up.” The CBN boss revealed that in the 50 years of the CBN’s existence “only four women had made it to director level and this was a period when we had 10,000 staff, today we have seven or eight female directors, this comes from a conscious policy of looking for qualified women to take these positions.” Speaking on the theme of the symposium, “Women in leadership, the Education Pipeline.” the CBN boss also gave an insight into fresh attention being paid to the womenfolk by his organisation, saying that the management and staff were being trained on gender issues. Mallam Sanusi, who spoke passionately on the need for parents to adequately educate their girls, lamented the high rate of school drop-outs in the North where over 70 per cent of girls cannot read. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/banks-to-appoint-30-women-board-members-sanusi/ |
WARRI — KELVIN (surname withheld), the most wanted kidnap/robbery kingpin in Delta State, who hails from Kokori community in Ethiope East Local Government Area has gone into hiding following the manhunt for him by the army and police over the wave of killing of security agents in the state. Police declared the suspect, said to possess a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering and a former aide to a top politician in the state, wanted last year, after series of kidnap and armed robbery operations, within and outside the state, were traced to him, but he remained hard to pin down. Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, who confirmed Kelvin as the most notorious kidnapper in the state, in an interview with Vanguard, last year, expressed optimism then that he would be arrested shortly. But the kidnap kingpin shocked security operatives when he pulled a daring mission in Warri, last month, killing a number of prisons officials, as his gang ambushed warders and snatched two of its men being taken to court for trial. However, Kelvin, whose gang had allegedly killed many soldiers and police officers in the past, became a principal target when his gang purportedly killed some soldiers, recently. Military authorities have not confirmed the report. Commissioner Aduba told Vanguard in the aforesaid interview that motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders in Kokori were on the payroll of Kelvin, as they tip him off whenever security agents enter the town to look for him. Apparently confirming Aduba’s claim, the state government, as part of security measures to stem the high level of criminality in Ethiope East, placed a ban on the use of motorcycles in the area, two days ago. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/ph-d-holder-kidnap-kingpin-on-the-run/ |

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a driver, Olusegun Ajayi, for allegedly raping a 15-year-old housemaid in Arepo, Ogun State. The NSCDC authorities said the suspect had canal knowledge of the girl which caused her to bleed for two days. Ajayi, however, told PUNCH Metro that his act was not rape since the victim consented. The suspect, who claimed to be a devout Christian, said he did not know the victim prior to the incident. He said, “On Saturday night, I was returning from a party and was about to enter my house when I saw the girl sitting outside. I asked her what she was doing outside late at night but she said she was working in a house not far away from my workplace and was sent to buy sweets by her employer. “She said she was locked outside and that she had been knocking for hours but no one came to open the door for her. I then told her to follow me to an uncompleted building on the street. On getting to the building, we saw a mattress there which had been left behind by labourers. I asked her if she could sleep alone there but she said no. “So, I went back to my house to get a wrapper and a pillow. Although my wife was not at home, my mother-in-law was around. So, I left her with my children and told her I would not be coming back that night.” Ajayi, who claimed to be a father of three, said on returning to where the victim was, he laid beside her and began to caress her. “I don’t know what came over me but I found myself touching her and she did not resist. Rather, she said I should pay her N10, 000 for sex and I promised to give it to her the following day. However, a few minutes into the sex, she started bleeding profusely which scared me,” he said. The indigene of Lagos State said he went back home to get drugs as well as toiletries which he would use to stop the bleeding. He said when it was daybreak, he set out for work but was summoned back home after which the employees of the victim accused him of rape. “I was on my way to Iporni in Lagos when my wife called me that people were asking of me at home. When I returned home, residents just started beating me before handing me over to the civil defence,” he said. In a desperate plea to the civil defence authorities, the suspect said he did not know that the victim was a minor. He added that his predicament was the handiwork of the devil. “I have three children, including a daughter. I would never have touched that girl if I knew she was 15. I am a devout Christian and I am a responsible man. The devil preyed on my weakness and I promise never to do such again,” he said. A source at the NSCDC, who craved anonymity, said the victim was taken to hospital and that the bleeding had stopped. She however added that investigations were ongoing and that medical report would determine what happened. “We believe that the victim was not only raped but the suspect must have done something to her because she lost so much blood. Once the medical report is out, we will know the next line of action,” she said. http://www.punchng.com/metro/driver-rapes-15-year-old-housemaid-blames-the-devil/ |

MIAMI (AFP) – A US couple who had fled to Cuba after snatching their two young sons from the care of their grandmother are behind bars in Tampa, Florida, local law enforcement said Wednesday. A US airplane carrying Joshua Hakken, his wife Sharyn Patricia and their sons, aged two and four, landed in Tampa from Cuba early Wednesday, local media reported. Hakken was attempting to flee US authorities when he took his wife and boys to Cuba aboard his sailboat on Monday. Joshua Hakken was booked in the Hillsborough County, Florida jail and faces charges that include child neglect, kidnapping, burglary, and grand theft auto, while Sharyn Hakken will face charges of kidnapping, interference with child custody and child neglect. TV footage showed the couple arriving in the United States in handcuffs. Aboard the plane were local, state and federal agents who flew to Cuba to bring the family home. The Tampa area sheriff, David Gee, said the couple also faces federal charges of fleeing to avoid prosecution. The children and the family dog, which went along to Cuba, will return to the home of the maternal grandmother, the sheriff told local media. Officials in Florida had been searching for Joshua Hakken since April 3 when he allegedly broke into his mother-in-law’s house near Tampa, tied her up and fled with his young boys. The Hillsborough County sheriff’s office said that Hakken lost custody of the children after being arrested in Louisiana on drug charges in June 2012, following what police described as “an anti-government rally.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/us-couple-arrested-after-kidnapping-own-children/ |
ABUJA—The Council of Legal Education, Tuesday, adduced reasons why President Goodluck Jonathan, sacked the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr Tahir Mamman and his six deputies. The Council which made the disclosure on a day it declared all the law faculties operated by the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, illegal, maintained that the tenure of the sacked law school officials had since elapsed. It will be recalled that Dr Mamman was reportedly sacked by President Jonathan sequel to the recommendation of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN. Others affected by the recommendation included the Deputy-Directors of the six law schools in the country located in Lagos, Enugu, Kano, Yenagoa and Yola. Meanwhile, the DG who had already spent five years in office contrary to his four year contract has been permitted to retain his position till December. Addressing newsmen after a meeting with members of the Council and the embattled DG of the Law School, Mamman, had with the AGF , yesterday, Chairman of the Council and former National President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Chief O.C.J Okocha, SAN, harped on the need for an urgent amendment of the existing law governing the administration of the Law School which he said made no clear-cut provision for tenure of the School’s DG. He decried that hitherto, the tenure of both the DG and his deputies were fixed through policy direction of the Council, saying, “we felt in this present Council that it was not a tidy arrangement. Some have been in the position since 11 years ago and some have been there for longer than necessary. He said the process will occasion an amendment of the existing Act with a view to making specific provision for the appointment, tenure, duties and responsibilities of the Law School DG, as well as, ensure that only the Council “shall be entitled to approve and accredit Faculties of Law in Nigerian Universities, and also recognize LL.B. Degrees awarded by Faculties of Law or other such bodies in Universities and other Law Degree awarding institutions outside Nigeria.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/why-fg-sacked-law-school-dg-6-others/ |
