Lagos High Court, Ikeja on Tuesday ordered that the alleged fraudster, Mr. Fred Ajudua, be remanded in prison.
Justice Joseph Oyewole gave the order when Ajudua made his first appearance in court after he avoided trial for eight years.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had in 2003 arraigned Ajudua and his co-accused, Charles Hijiudu, for allegedly defrauding two Dutch businessmen – Mr. Remy Cina and Pierre Vijgen – of about $1.69m between July 1999 and September 2000.
The matter, which had proceeded to trial, had been stalled after he stopped attending court up till December 2005, when the court revoked the bail earlier granted him.
The judge said in a ruling on Tuesday, “The first defendant ceased to be on bail since December 15, 2005 when his bail was revoked.

Students of the University of Lagos are protesting the high cost of living on campus.

Vanguard gathered that the peaceful protest started yesterday, as the students bemoaned the high cost of food and other basic items on campus, saying it is disheartening that students are paying higher for food and other consumables than their prices outside campus. The cost of making photocopies is also said to be too expensive for an academic environment.

According to a citizen reporter who seeks anonymity,”Imagine, we students are buying sachet water at N10 per sachet, Indomie super pack sold for N60 in town is N70 here, same as Indomie hungry man size, which is N100 everywhere except in my school where it goes for N110. Also soft drinks in plastic bottles such as Viju,Fanta,Pepsi are sold for N120 per bottle instead of its supposed retail price of N100.

Passive or second-hand smokers are 20 to 25 per cent likely to contract cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, Dr kinglsey Osagie, a lung specialist with the National Hospital Abuja, has warned.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), second-hand smoke refers to the smoke that found in restaurants, offices, and, or other enclosed spaces where people burn tobacco products such as cigarettes, bidis, and water pipes.
Osagie told reporters in Abuja on Monday that tobacco smoke contained more than 4,000 chemicals of which at least 250 were known to be harmful with more than 50 of them known to cause cancer of the lungs.
The doctor, therefore, said that passive smokers could not be less affected by the cigarette smoke than the smoker himself or herself.
He called on the Federal Government to implement the law against smoking in public places in all states of the federation.
