The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral John Jonah (rtd), on Tuesday denied reports that he abandoned his office and fled to Abuja to avoid pressure by political appointees to approve files.

Jonah was alleged to have run away from the state after his principal, Governor Seriake Dickson, began his three-week vacation.

Dickson had postponed his vacation initially scheduled for August 5 to enable him finish his duties as the Chairman of the National Reconciliation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party.

But he later commenced the vacation on August 15.

There were allegations that shortly after his departure, his deputy also disappeared from the state.

His alleged disappearance was said to have compelled the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Edmund Allison-Oguru, to represent the governor at events.

But Jonah denied reports that he abandoned his office and travelled out of the state.

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media, Ebi Evinson, he debunked reports that pressures from appointees of the government forced him out of the state.

Jonah said he only travelled to attend the PDP South-South meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, and returned to Yenagoa on Saturday.

The Taraba State House of Assembly has summoned ailing Governor Danbaba Suntai to address them, in order to substantiate his claim that he is ready and capable of resuming his official duties as governor.

The lawmakers’ summon followed a letter written by Suntai, informing them of his return to the country and desire to resume his official duties.

They are still not sure if Suntai has sufficiently recovered to resume his duties, considering his inability to speak to anyone since he returned from America.

Gov. Suntai who returned to the country on Sunday after 10 months overseas, for medical treatment following injuries he sustained in a plane crash, is said to be holed up inside the Government House at Jalingo.

Efforts by the lawmakers to see him yesterday were rebuffed by his security aides.

The River Sate Chapter of People Democratic Party, Monday, lived up to its billing by expelling eighteen members of the party, loyal to Gov. Rotimi Amaechi.The party cited failure without any justifiable reason to submit themselves before the performance.

But sources says that the expulsion is a ploy to rid the party of Amaechi loyalist.

The party chairman said the party, acting on the recommendation of the disciplinary and the performance evaluation committee, had to wield the big stick on the affected members for not only refusing to honour the performance assessment committee’s invitation, but also not considering it worthwhile to excuse themselves or send in written reports of their stewardships, if they were not chanced to put up appearance despite the well-publicized sitting arrangements of the committee.

Amongst those expelled are the immediate past Deputy National Chairman of the Party (South-South), Sam Jaja, the Secretary to the State Government, George Feyii, the Chief of Staff to the Governor of the state, and the Sole Administrator of the Port Harcourt City Development Authority, Aleruchi Cookey-Gam.
