FamilyFather Seeks Court’s Protection Against Children’s Intimidation by Tjohn1(op): 5:20pm On Apr 08, 2013
Makurdi – A 56-year-old father, Mr Pius Ategba, on Monday prayed a Makurdi Magistrates’ Court to free him from his sons’ harassment and intimidation.

Ategba told the court that James and Justin, a set of twins, were making life difficult for him in his own house, with James threatening to kill him by sword or gun.

“James had threatened to kill me either by sword or gun in my own house. He even asked me to vacate my house; that if I do not, I will one day blame myself for failing to comply with his directive,’’ he said.

He said that James had sold all his property and wanted him to vacate the house so that he would also sell it.

The father said that all efforts to bring peace between him and his children had proved abortive.

He, therefore, prayed the court to order the accused to stop harassing him as well as to move out of his house.

The accused, however, denied all the allegations.

Justin said he was staying at Adikpo and was surprised to receive the summons, adding that that only James was staying in Makurdi with their father.

The magistrate, Mrs Felicia Ikyegh, adjourned the case until April 25 for hearing.

PoliticsNo ‘presidential Directive’ Can Stop Merger Of Progressive Parties – ACN by Tjohn1(op): 4:08pm On Apr 02, 2013
The Action Congress of Nigeria has warned that no presidential directive or executive order can stop the merger of progressive forces in the country to democratically take power from the PDP in 2015.
The party in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, described as an eye-opener, the report today by a national newspaper, that a presidential directive dated March 26th, 2013, had been issued for everything to be done to frustrate the merger of opposition parties.
ACN however warned that do-or-die politics or violence for whatever reason will not spare anyone, including the instigators, just as constricting the democratic space will eventually stifle democracy.
”Nigerians are yearning for change. Therefore targeting our leaders won’t help the disappearing behemoth, whose so-called reconciliation efforts have even worsened its plight.
Needless to say that every attempt or attack on perceived political opponents by the government and it apparatchiks will be revealed, contested and resisted.

PoliticsCourt Dismisses Ogbulafor’s No Case Submission by Tjohn1(op): 2:56pm On Mar 26, 2013
An Abuja High Court on Tuesday dismissed the `no case submission’ filed by the former National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, for alleged corruption charges.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) filed a 17-count charge against Ogbulafor, Emeka Ebilah and Jude Nwokoro.
The anti-graft body alleged that they awarded fictitious contracts amounting to N107 million contrary to Section 19 of the ICPC Act 2000.
Ogbulafor, in his no case submission argued that the prosecution evidence were not sufficient to warrant the trial.
However, Justice Ishaq Bello, in his ruling held that the prosecution established a prima facie case against the accused to warrant the trial.
Bello ordered the accused persons to bring all their witnesses on the next adjourned dated.
He also threatened to revoke the bail of the second accused person, Ebilah, who was not in court during the ruling.
He adjourned the case to April 15, for Ogbulafor to open his defence.

PoliticsTrial Of Ikuforiji: Defence Counsel Urges Court To Dismiss Suit by Tjohn1(op): 2:55pm On Mar 25, 2013
Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, on Monday asked a Federal High Court in Lagos to strike out a charge of money laundering preferred against him.

Ikuforiji’s counsel, Mr Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), made the request at the resumed hearing of the case before Justice Okechuckwu Okeke, following the absence of Mr Godwin Obla, the EFCC prosecutor.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the speaker and his personal assistant, Oyebode Atoyebi, have been standing trial before the court since March 1, 2012, on a 20-count charge bordering on money laundering.

Reacting to a letter by Obla informing the court of his absence, Oyetibo said that since the trial began, the prosecution had treated the case with much levity.

He claimed that several adjournments granted by the court had been at the instance of the prosecution, who had exhibited visible reluctance in the trial.

The defence counsel, therefore, urged the court to dismiss the suit for lack of diligent prosecution.

After listening to the submissions of Oyetibo, Okeke said he would adjourn the matter for overriding public interest.

He, therefore, adjourned the case to April 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 for continuation of trial.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had told the court that the accused conspired between April 2010 and July 2011, to commit the alleged offences.

It alleged that the duo conspired to commit an illegal act of accepting cash payments amounting to N273,303,780 million from the Assembly, without going through a financial institution.

The anti-graft commission also alleged that Ikuforiji used his position to misappropriate about N500 million belonging to the legislature.
Food3 Kids Die Over Alleged Water Pollution In Bayelsa by Tjohn1(op): 10:31am On Mar 25, 2013
THREE teenagers have died in Lotugbene community in Bayelsa State after allegedly drinking water from a river polluted by the rig operation of an oil company in the area.

The affected children, Osumayin Eniye, 7 years; Kpegbolo Oyadonbenfa, 5 years and Boroyegha, 10 years, supposedly died of cholera after vomiting and stooling for a while.

The river is the only source of drinking water to the community.

Irate chiefs, elders and youth leaders of the community have consequently handed down a seven-day ultimatum to the company to quit the area.

A source said the quality of water in Lotugbene was affected since October 6, 2011 when the oil company started drilling a rig and allegedly polluted the entire river in the process.

Leaders of the community, Chief Noel Babazouwei, Wilfred Ikere and Isaac lamented that efforts to reach the oil company, which they accused of forcefully encroaching on Tinpa AOPL282 location proved abortive, as the company had remained incommunicado.

They said they had written to the Presidency, National Assembly, Governor Henry Dickson of BayelsaState and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs on their plight, but no respite yet.

The community, however, said it was disposed to dialogue with the company within the seven days, but if the company ignored the ultimatum, then, it could not guarantee the safety of the firm’s officials in the area.

TV/MoviesKidnapped NTA Reporter Kept In Creeks, Paid N1m Ransom by Tjohn1(op): 10:20am On Mar 25, 2013
A nursing mother and broadcaster with the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, Akure, Ondo State, Mrs Olubunmi Oke, who was kidnapped last Thursday has been released by her abductors.

This, however, was possible after her family coughed out N1 million ransom to the kidnappers who dropped her along the Benin Ore Expressway at about 11 p.m, Saturday.
Mrs Olubunmi Oke

Mrs Olubunmi Oke

Bunmi, as she is fondly called by her colleagues, has since re-united with her banker husband and six-month-old baby girl.

She has, however, been barred from granting interviews on her ordeal in the hands of her captors.

But findings by Vanguard revealed that she was driven to one of the Niger Delta states and kept in the creeks by her kidnappers.

Her friends who volunteered information said she was not maltreated by the kidnappers who also sympathised with her that she is a nursing mother.

Investigations had it that the kidnappers initially requested N30 million as ransom but later went down to N6 million and eventually settled for N1 million.

Vanguard gathered that they settled for N1 million following appeals from the family of the nursing mother that the baby had been deprived of breast feeding for three days.

It was learnt that during the negotiation, the kidnappers heard the cry of the baby and were moved.

The kidnappers, according to investigation, asked the husband of the journalist to bring the ransom to Owo and when he got there, he was asked to return to Akure.

The husband was later called about 30minutes after to go to Ore where they said he would find his wife.

Some security personnel and the husband later went for her only to be told by Bunmi that she was dropped in the bush and was helped by a truck driver to the expressway.

BusinessOkonjo-iweala’s Mother: Police Arrest Palace Guard by Tjohn1(op): 10:14am On Mar 25, 2013
POLICE have seized a 36-year-old palace guard and suspected kidnap kingpin, alleged to have facilitated the abduction of Prof. Kamene Okonjo, mother of the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, last December, in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State by kidnappers.

DeltaState Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, who confirmed the arrest of the suspect, Chiejine, to Vanguard, yesterday, said: “While the police in DeltaState were after him, the Lagos State Police Command was also after him for some criminal offences, so we have handed him over to them.”

He said the police did not have a hand in the Okonjo-Iweala mother kidnap until he was arrested by the police, last week, after a shootout in EdoState in connection with the death of 71-year-old Mrs. Regina Obi after collecting N2 million ransom from her family.

Police shot dead one of the suspected kidnappers and arrested four others in separate operations in Benin City and Ogwashi-Uku

Aduba said the suspect, who worked in the palace as a guard, confessed he was the one that brought the kidnappers to the palace to kidnap Prof. Okonjo.

He said Chiejine’s house in Ogbe-Ofu quarters, Ogwashi-Uku was demolished when it was confirmed he was a kidnapper.

Aduba stressed the need for people to be careful of the kind of people they employ as guards, saying: “This is the problem we have now, for practically every kidnap, there is an inside factor. Chiejine is very close to them in the palace and he is the one that brought the kidnappers.”

The police in Sapele, yesterday, saved an hermaphrodite who is partly man and partly woman, from being lynched by a mob, when the figure suddenly showed up along New Ogorode road, by Total Filling Station, in Sapele.

An eye witness said the incident led to traffic jam along Sapele/Warri ever busy expressway and the New Ogorode road as commuters and drivers stopped to catch a glimpse.

When Vanguard visited the scene, the fellow was completely naked, with hair covering most part of the body and a mustached face like a man but with a pair of big size breasts dangling on the chest as well as female and male private parts side by side in the pubic area.

Shortly the crowd began to swell as more people trooped in to catch a glimpse until some attempted to lynch the fellow but for the timely intervention of the police who arrived the scene and whisked the fellow away in a police car.

At the Sapele Police Area Office where the fellow was taken, he identified himself as Pastor Henry Enuta but refused to disclose his mission nor why he was naked. All efforts to get words from him by newsmen failed as the fellow only occasionally shook his head regretably.

The DPO of the Sapele Police Station, CSP Kenneth Akubue confirmed the rescue of the fellow.

Travel1,585 Nigerians In Norway Prisons For Drug Trafficking, Says Holm by Tjohn1(op): 12:46pm On Mar 20, 2013
LEADERS of the delegation of Norwegian Intelligence Service and Customs officials, Mr. Kai Arild Holm, yesterday, in Lagos, said no fewer than 1,585 Nigerians were arrested and detained in Norwegian prisons between 2000 and 2012 over drug trafficking offences.

Disclosing this development during the team’s visit to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in Lagos, Holm said the visit to the anti-narcotic agency was to enhance collaboration with Nigerian authorities in counter narcotic smuggling, money laundering and human trafficking.

According to him, “in 2012, we arrested 432 Nigerians in Norway and deported 95 over drug trafficking. We need your help in dealing with the problem of West African criminal networks in Norway. Most Nigerians arrested over drug trafficking are based in Europe. They engage in drug smuggling and launder the money back home.”

Chairman of NDLEA, Ahamu Giade, said the decision to collaborate with the Norway was reached after a meeting with a delegation of Norwegian Police and Customs officials that visited the agency in Lagos, Monday.

He said: “We need to enter into a memorandum of understanding to deepen our collaboration with the Norwegian government.
