PORT HARCOURT–It was gory sight yesterday in Mgboshiminu community in Obio/Akpor Local Government of Rivers State as Charity Ovudah, 36, allegedly stabbed her husband to death after first poisoning his food. The alleged murder said to have taken place in the night before was reportedly provoked by the deceased, Peter Ovudah’s attempt to bring a second wife into the matrimonial home he had shared with the alleged killer. A family source said the decease had already concluded plans to bring the new wife, who was pregnant, into the family houset before Charity’s fatal reaction. Mrs. Igbokwe Onyeka, a neighbour to the Ovudahs revealed that; “The family had been quarreling over the issue of a second wife but no one anticipated that Charity would be so angered killed her husband. A 19-year-old housemaid to the Ovudahs, who gave her name as simply Loveth said she witnessed how Ovudah died, saying she first noticed that Charity added something to her husband’s food that fateful night. she said: “I was the one who served the food for my aunt’s husband but my aunt added something that looked like salt and mixed it together. “So when Oga came back and started eating I was monitoring him. After about 30 minutes he started behaving strange and fell off the dining chair, rolling on the floor and shouting for help. “That was when my aunt came and stabbed him till he gave up”, she said. The suspected killer was said to have disappeared the moment the housemaid alerted neighbours of her action, but the remains of the deceased has been deposited at the BraithwaiteMemorialHospital mortuary in Port Harcourt. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/03/wife-poisons-stabs-husband-to-death-over-second-wife/ |
Bad news for struggling Lagos based radio station Inspiration FM 92.3 and its many listeners as a mass exodus of top staff might be ruining the year for them. NET has discovered that a healthy number of workers including top radio presenters like Charles ‘Chaz B’ Bruce, Shola Thompson, Ada ‘Folustorm’ Ogunkeye and Shayo have all left the Victoria Island based station since February. Insiders tell us the staff who left were very displeased with the way management ran the radio station and were practically fed up. According to those who spoke with Nigerian Entertainment Today, the company, owned by disgraced former MD of defunct Intercontinental Bank Erastus Akingbola was ‘no longer moving in the right direction’. It’s over two years now since founding GM Wale Ewedemi left the station. And NET sources say some of the issues of that time still prevail, including external influence and, allegedly, a domineering management. ‘There are too many friends of Akingbola on the board that are doing nothing, they just sit there and make tacky decisions’, a staff who’d rather remain anonymous told NET over the weekend. ‘There were many ideas the staff would bring up, innovative ideas but they’d always play it down. It became too frustrating for some so I don’t blame those who left. They often acted completely clueless’. Popular and seasoned OAP Shola Thompson who left the station for good in February (a few days after returning from his official leave) says the station’s management seemed not to have new ideas to take the station to the next level. ‘I don’t understand why we couldn’t take the station to the next level, we kept coming up with ideas and every single one we brought got shot down’, the former Rhythm FM OAP told NET over the phone. Thompson had been made ‘Head of Programmes’ while senior colleague Chaz B was away on medical treatment. Chaz B also left this March, sources say, for same reasons. The presenter who anchors the very popular show ‘Sharing Life Issues’ opened up on how he left Inspiration. Explaining to his fans via Facebook he revealed that he gave a 30 day notice of resignation on March 1, 2013 with the intention to leave April 1, 2013 for his official vacation. He was however shocked when the ‘Chairman’ told management on March 4, to pay him off and relieve him of his duties the very next day (March 5) and asked to leave the premises immediately. ‘I want all of you to know that I miss you and that I love you very much. I would NEVER just leave you the way it happened. However, look out for bigger and better things to come. I promise you’ll be hearing from me again on a much wider platform. Remain blessed’, Chaz wrote in a touching note to his many fans. Folustorms who temporarily got her face on cable TV as a top finalist at the recently held MTV Base VJ Search has also thrown in the towel. ‘She’s got a bigger deal somewhere, what is she staying back for?’, a friend close to her told NET. Another person who said ‘bye-bye’ last February is Shayo due to a conflict of interest. The sports analyst anchored the Sports Edge program. Apparently, Shayo was an anchor on a syndicated show that ran on other stations. The management weren’t pleased with this. ‘I’m fine with Inspiration. I’m moving on to achieve my personal goals. If I’m still there, I wouldn’t move on. Now I’m out, I can focus more on my events planning. It was a personal decision to leave’, Shayo told NET. And another OAP Gbemileke ‘Oscar’ Oyinsan who has been with Inspiration for many years, has also left. He’s now pitched his tent with City FM as head of programmes. Sources say another reason why the station hasn’t been able to breakthrough is that its brand is constantly being seen as a Gospel radio station. A huge part of that ‘blame’, those who spoke to us insist, goes to Dan Foster. ‘Dan brought this whole gospel feel to the station and made it quite popular, so people think the station is gospel-themed which is not. Now, because he is an ‘oyinbo’ man, the management can’t lay a finger on him’, another staff says. Dan is one of the highest-paid OAPs in Nigeria. He moved from Cool FM to Inspiration on a N12m per annum deal, along with official residence and choice car. We also spoke to an OAP who’s still working there. Wana Udobang says ‘everybody has a right to make decisions. We all have different paths, so I wish everybody the best’. All calls and text messages directed to one of the station’s directors, veteran broadcaster Soni Irabor were not responded to as at Sunday. The station also failed to respond to email enquiries. But we confirmed that they’ve already started auditioning for new talent to take over from the departed staff… |

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) on Tuesday said it was planning to hold a special prayer session for all pregnant women and waiting mothers in the country. The General Overseer of the Church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who disclosed this at a media briefing, said that the programme would hold on April 7 at the RCCG National Headquarters, Ebute Meta, Lagos. Adeboye, who was represented by Mr Goke Aniyeloye, an assistant pastor in charge of Social Responsibility, said that the special prayer session would be for God to sustain His blessings for the country. According to him, “the programme is a manifestation of God’s great vision for the country. ``One of the major reason for marriage is procreation. In Africa, we place high values on marriage and procreation, and we need God fearing offsprings to succeed us, people we can leave our inheritance to. “Africans leave their inheritance to fellow human beings and not animals as it is done in some developed countries. We leave behind successors who would continue to bear and uplift the good name of the family. “These are the same reasons why we should take adequate care of our pregnant and waiting mothers,” he said. Adeboye noted that prayers should be included in ante-natal cares for safe delivery of pregnant women. “Our pregnant women should deliver safely like the Hebrew women of old, who gave birth before the attendant or midwives came. “Waiting mothers also have to be prayed for, so that God will open their wombs. No man or woman is permitted to be barren. “We are all created after the similitude of God, therefore, we are licenced to be fruitful", he added. The cleric said that the situation of things in the country would certainly bounce back for the better, adding that prayer was the only means of attaining a breakthrough. |

Bello of the Abuja Division, Court 3 of the Federal High Court gave judgment in the case of Bamidele Aturu vs Minister of Petroleum Resources and the Attorney General of the Federation today and declared the policy of deregulation as unconstitutional, illegal, null and void. The court agreed with all arguments and granted all reliefs sought by Aturu. Aturu had asked for a declaration that the policy decision of the defendants to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by not fixing the prices at which petroleum products may be sold in Nigeria is unlawful, illegal, null, void and of no effect whatsoever being in vicious violation of the mandatory provision of section 6 of the Petroleum Act, cap P.10, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. He also prayed the court to declare that the policy decision of the defendants to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by not fixing the prices at which petroleum products may be sold in Nigeria is unlawful, illegal, null, void and of no effect whatsoever being in a flagrant violation of the mandatory provision of section 4 of the Price Control Act, cap P28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. Aturu further sought a declaration that the policy decision of the defendants to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by not fixing the prices at which petroleum products may be sold in Nigeria is unlawful, illegal, null, void and of no effect whatsoever being in conflict with Section 16(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 which provides that the government shall control the national economy in such manner as to secure the maximum welfare, freedom and happiness of every citizen on the basis of social justice and equality of status and opportunity. He also asked the court to declare that the policy decision of the defendants, to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by not fixing the prices at which petroleum products may be sold in Nigeria has the effect of making the freedom of movement guaranteed in section 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 illusory for the Plaintiff and the generality of Nigerians and is therefore illegal, unconscionable and unconstitutional and of no effect whatsoever. He asked for an order restraining the defendants their agents, privies, collaborators from deregulating the downstream sector of the petroleum industry or from failing to fix the prices of petroleum products as mandatorily required by the Petroleum Act and the Price Control Act. Govt Renames Ministry Of Trade And Investment The Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment has been renamed Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (MITI), with effect from March 9, 2013. The new identity was said to have been informed by the need to highlight moves to reposition the nation’s manufacturing sector. The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga disclosed this development at a meeting with the National Council of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) in Lagos on Thursday. MAN has been the leading voice in the call for name change when government named the former Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2011 as Ministry of Trade and Investment. At the meeting with MAN national council, Aganga reiterated the position of the administration that the new National Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) would be the driver of the new vision of government for the manufacturing sector. Besides, at the inauguration of the board of the National Competitiveness Council of Nigeria (NCCN) on March 4, President Goodluck Jonathan said that the 2014 budget and beyond would be designed to encourage the manufacturing sector for employment generation. The 18-member board is chaired by Aganga, with Chief Kola Jamodu as member. In support of government’s new resolve, the Minister explained that no major nation has managed to transform itself from a poor nation to rich nation by relying solely on exports of raw materials without a vibrant industrial and services sector. He added that it is therefore critical for the country to address industrial development of Nigeria. Aganga added that Nigeria currently underperforms its regional and global peers on industrial development but that the mission of government was to increase manufacturing contributions from four per cent to eight to 10 per cent of Gross Domestic Product over the next five years. Jamodu had commended Aganga for his uncommon commitment to resolve challenges that manufacturers face in the domestic economy. He also thanked the Minister for his open door policy and prompt responses to issues reported to the government by manufacturers. SOURCE: GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER |
