Dear forum,
I have being conspicuously silent on the forum for some time. This had being due to a number of factors, including work load, exasperation with the World football administration (video technology, poor referees and the verbal diarrhea of Blatter and his sidekick Platini). However, I have carved out some time to put down my usual epistle.

Within the week we have been treated to a feast of absurdity. Some thieves in the LOC of Nigeria 2009 wanted to “maga”, unfortunately their greed was greater than their guile and Mr. President called their bluff. Then suddenly, suddenly (like D’Banj would say, a budget of N37 billion (sorry – N35 billion, as clarified by the spokesman of the LOC) became N9 billion, i.e. the 8th wonder of the modern world. In truth, even the N9 billion budget in my view is inflated. However, the initial budget just shows the level of greed in this country. The LOC must have thought “wow-see how those Nigeria 99 and COJA guys hammered, God has brought my own chance, I must not monkey it”. N35 billion in a country, where over 80% live on less than N200 is simply godless. Let’s face it even that was the actual cost, why should government spend such a massive amount of funds on what is at best a jamboree, when our roads, hospitals, schools and general infrastructure is in a shambles. God will punish all of them, thief, ole, barawo!.

The House of Representatives have also managed to act out their own drama. Peugeot cars worth N5.1 million were purchased for N6.2 million and all they can say is that Keyamo is trying to distract them. Against this background, it can be understood why I always look forward to Saturday or Sunday afternoons to watch the English premier league and get a release from all the insanity around me in this country. In times past, I derived joy from watching my beloved Arsenal football club of England . A team which has given me so much joy in the last two decades, spanning two centuries. However, in recent times, a guy who was supposed to be the Messiah of the Club has simply turned into its Ant-Christ. I will not mention names, but let us call him the “Wizard of poor decision making and myopic substitutions”

This guy came to the club and brought a new style of football, won trophies and even did the un-doable, i.e. led the team to an unbeaten season. He was riding high, except that he had not won any European trophy. Then he took the team to the final of the Champions league and then the foolishness reared its head. He tinkered with a backline that had not conceded a goal in 13 matches previously, kept a striker on the pitch who had vowed not to score in that match and when the team needed a burst of pace, he left two very quick strikers on the bench, until the team conceded two late, late goals. The foolishness did not end their. He began to dispose of all his experienced players and replace them with starlets. Fair enough, but what ever happened to stability and continuity, because he also began to sell of some of the more experienced starlets.

Today, he has become a joke, his transfer dealings are only fit for a “Nite of Thousand Laffs”, his decision making is so poor these days, you begin to wonder if senility has not set in, in only his late fifties. Leading the league for most of last year, it didn’t occur to him to strengthen his defence in the window, when it was clear that the team was conceding goals. Finishing third, he disposes of three mid-fielders and doesn’t make any significant defensive signings. This set me back on a memory lane and I began to play back his coaching career and it occurred to me. The guy is an excellent talent scout, but a very hopeless coach. Believe me, when you put together very good players, you can win trophies with little coaching. The problem set in when good coaches began to bring good players to the EPL and the guy was exposed for what he is – a good team manager, but a hopeless tactician. In 11 years, I challenge anyone on this forum to give me 11 game changing substitutions the Wizard has made. They may exist, but you would struggle.

Now I expect some backlash, but those who know me, know I have canvassed for this guys sack on at least three occasions, in 2000, when we gifted Galatasary the UEFA Cup, due to stupid substitutions and a certain No. 14 who refused to score, even when Gala, badly wanted to concede goals. Again in 2001, when the club finished 18 points behind Man U and at the beginning of this season, when the genius maintained that Arsenal wasn’t far behind United, a team ,which had just won the league and European double – what delusion. Yes he has won the EPL on three other occasions, including the unbeaten run. But let’s face it, he has massively underachieved. And recently he has taken the club to new lows, losing to European power houses, like Fulham and Hull . Amongst the top coaches, believe no one would make three defensive substitutions leading the league’s bottom team with two goals in a home league game with 15 minutes to go, which is what this genius did last nite – tactical wizardry. I watched the match with a number of fans and each substitution was greeted with consternation. If a bunch of Nigerians watching the match in Abuja with generator could see that his substitutions were stupid, then I wonder what his bench or players think about him. I fear that he will soon lose the dressing room, given that Fabregas has started to give feelers about his trophy aspirations and I’m sure a number of the players think the same.

Check his team selections, very suspect, his substitutions, very suspect, team tactics – one track, once it doesn’t work the whole team is lost. There are no leaders or fighters in his team, where are the Tony Adams, the Steve Boulds, the Vieiras, Pires or the Bergampks –game changers. His defence is the worse amongst the top 4. United, Chelsea or Pool would never concede four goals at home to any team. I stand to be corrected. The guy is obsessed with something else and I believe he has totally lost the plot. He has taken the club as far as he can go. The sooner he leaves or is elevated to Director of Football, the better. Otherwise it would be Monaco all over.

I have my candidates already, Hiddink for one, would do an excellent job, entertainment and trophies, likewise Slaven Bilic, Rijkaard or Mancini. Who knows I might even be an option, at least, I wouldn’t have made those substitutions last nite and we would have had 2 additional points.
