bidexiii: Nigeria: Islamic State fighters attack Jakana military base after deadly ambush
Islamic State militants attacked a military base in Jakana town in northeast Nigeria’s Borno state after ambushing a military vehicle nearby and killing the six soldiers aboard, two military sources told AFP Thursday.
Heavily-armed Islamic State West Africa Province fighters opened fire on a patrol vehicle on Wednesday, July 17 near Jakana, which is around 40 km (25 miles) west of Borno state capital Maiduguri, killing all the soldiers on board.
“We lost all six soldiers in the ambush, including a colonel,” said the first of two military sources, who both spoke on condition of anonymity.
The soldiers were on their way to Maiduguri from Damaturu, the capital of neighboring Yobe state, when the militants attacked around 5:20 p.m. local time (1620 GMT), said the source.
“The gun truck the soldiers were driving in was destroyed,” the second source said.
Following the ambush the insurgents attacked a military base just outside Jakana in seven technicals – pickup trucks fitted with machine guns, also known as gun trucks in Nigeria – engaging troops in an hour-long battle, the sources said. The attack was repelled by soldiers at the base, with ISWAP fighters abandoning weapons and one vehicle as they fled.
Nigeria’s Sun News outlet, which first broke news of the raid on Jakana on Wednesday, said the attack began at around 6:30 p.m. and that scores of residents had fled into the bush.
The army has not officially confirmed the attacks, and ISIS has not yet said that ISWAP fighters were responsible.

bidexiii: Let's tell ourselves the truth the military as to step up there game and the federal government is not doing well at all when it comes to funding, for a country fighting terrorism. We lost six good soldiers as a result of ambush by BHT, we can't rely on villagers to always give us intell on BHT movement & activities. What do we do to always counter threats in form of ambush, I.E.D threats and how to stop BHT from overrunning our military Base. These have been happening for years and how top rank officers haven't preferred solution to all these threats our troops are facing. Troops on patrol riding on hilux are vulnerable to ambush and I.E.D threats. It takes grace to survive an ambush under fire, where you are out numbered 5 to 1 and you don't have a drone overhead. Mr president is doing well in funding the army well, the army is not just lucky. We need the ARA II MRAP in large numbers 300-500, especially for patrol missions. For Base defense our front line troops are not doing well in these aspect and to do just also our bases are not well fortified/protected as compared with many western/European bases in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq etc. I think the army authorities should emulate there airforce counterpart on how to defend bases and train soldiers in large numbers before they are been sent to the northeast, the earlier the better to stop these humiliation of BHT overrunning our F.O.B and carting away of ammunition caches. We should contact the United States army on these, I like the way they protect there bases in the east. If all law makers and elected personnel are ridding in bullet proofed/up armored cars then each soldier in the northeast deserves something much more better. We should face out every Toyota hilux vehicle and the MRAP should be the minimum vehicle for operation of any sort, we are rich and we can afford. Well said our major problem is just the leadership. ..they are bringing down the morale of troops |

bidexiii: May there soul R.I.P I think the cause of some attack on our military base is the citizens (villagers) in borno since BHT are providing some amenities for them they are their sympathizers... they provide Info for BHT....the military has said this Before and it's true on the other hand the army should be ready anytime any day for anything coming their way the army said they had sophisticated UAV it should help them... some unit should take a cue from the troops in Yobe...they are well able to repel any attack and inflict damage on BHT/ISWAP |

The F-35 Turkey would never see.
Turkish Air Force F-35A, now ex.
Was it a good decision for Turkey to have gone for the S-400 over the F-35?
Turkey has the second largest army in NATO.
Turkey also spends above the mandatory 2% of GDP on defence. It actually spends over, while the likes of Germany spends under 2%.
Turkey had pledged to buy 110 F-35A's.
Turkey also makes parts for the F-35 program. This manufacturing would now be moved back to the US.
Russia is now offering Turkey the SU-35. so turkey grounded their F35 or it's still in service... |

If we had as much assets like Algeria for example or Morroco. The figures would be far higher.
So on average, haven seen publicly released figures, it is comparable to the UAE or Saudi Arabia for example.

Salatavor: you saw all these happen or you read it on the news? What this man has said are very serious and should be closely looked into. Stop throwing around words like " our airforce is best in this", most active this, battle hardened that. People are dying and boko haram remains a fighting force and there is a reason why that is happening. Battle hardened my dirty left Gregorian foot. if our forces ain't doing nothing by now the whole of north would be under terror rule and cgad,Niger and Cameroon would be experiencing the heat too...... Do u know the amount of Force and hardware US, Germany, Russia,UK had to deploy to help degrade ISIS even France had to deploy it's Aircraft carrier,US had to deploy it's Destroyers even B2 spirit bombers and F22 raptors as if it was world war 3 though we don't have have such hardware but we are putting in everything we got...u can tell the difference of how insurgency was way back in 2009 to this present time if it was then BHT are capable of carrying out bomb attack in ABUJA!!!!!! And other states our troops and air Force is doing well our problem is the leadership |

People should not give credence to this troll/ closet symapthizer well said I mean the level, standard and quality of airstrike that NAF carry out can be compared to that of the USA and Russia in Syria and Iraq against ISIS |

kenpaul0: Someone posted this : I had a discussion with an Army officer posted to the North East
The young officer is tasked with protecting this nation from Boko Haram, he and his men could pay the ultimate price, this is why what he told me was important.
Somethings said I knew, others I did not, let me itemize what he told me
1. The Nigerian Army has no overall strategy to defeat Boko Haram He said there is no clear plan, just reactions.
2. The Chief of Army staff deployed lots of hardware to protect his village Brutai, this deployment is similar to Maiduguri. The strategy seems to be to counter and hold Boko Haram
3. The Chadian Army are better managers of equipment. He said the Chadian military has far older weapons but that they ensure everything is working. The task force they sent over is 100% mobile, but the Nigerian Army struggles to maintain Hilux Pickups talkless of modern tanks.
He said the Chadians were suprised at the poor state of our army, that they doubted our ability to defeat Boko Haram, the said Chadians dont run from battle when Boko Haram attacks but that the Nigerians do.
4. The bulk of Boko Haram Haram weapons are captured from the Nigerian Army. He said the NA will declare trucks or Artillery as unservicable but Boko Haram will capture same assets and get then to work.
5. There are sufficient arms delivered to the NA. He said before he got to his post he read about "lack of arms" but found out that was not true....the army had lots of arms but did not know how to maintain or deploy them
6. There is zero air cover. I asked him about the attack helicopters, he said they were grounded. He said Nigerian Army preferred the Niger Airforce (not Nigerian) and Chadian Airforce to conduct close strike Air to Surface operations because the have better and dedicated ground attack planes like the Sukhoi flown by Eastern Europeans.
7. He said the recruits coming out of training to join the Nigerian Army are sub par training and standards have really fallen.
8. Many Forward Operations Bases have been overan by Boko Haram. The Nigerian Army has been forced to destroy their own equipment as they flee, including our modern T72 tanks
9. He says money or even equipment is not the problem, he says there is no leadership of purpose and that many military men are "breaking protocol" just to survive
I think we get the picture. I am just posting this with the hope that something good will come out of this.
Boko Haram has exposed Nigeria.
Please pray for all our soldiers fighting Boko and also they officer said our attack helicopters are grounded which is not true and secondly our air Force is possibly the most active and battle hardened Force in this counter insurgency operation....we go as far as carrying out airstrike outside our airspace don't forget the lives of the MI35 crew that was laid down during close air support in damasak and also the close air support given to troops during an attack on MNJTF base....the air Force most times has to deploy our Alpha jet for night ops...we have gone as far as deploying jets in niger so they are closer to our troops..... |

Take a look at this old defenceweb article. this was actually the type with the split wind shield.....the very first 9... The they upgraded to the other type and the army commissioned 10 during nadcel 2018 they might have more than that....now currently according to the internet the army has 13 of the new type...... So if we are to calculate all together plus the expectation.... the army will have roughly 50 ARA mrap |
