Crime / Re: Victims Of Herdsmen Attack Buried In A Mass Grave In Plateau State. Graphic Pics by Toksytoks(m): 9:31am On Mar 14, 2018
We have allowed the herdsmen narrative to fester for too long and now nobody cares to dig up the truth behind these killings anymore.

The middle belt of Nigeria is has the most dangerous sets of militants - Tiv, eggon, mambila, fulani and all sorts of groups with small arms and weaponery with no known ideology. Totally different from the Niger Delta militants who at least have a face and make their demands known.

This is at most ethnic or political.. how many herdsmen do we actually have in the entire middlebelt and how are they capable of wrecking havoc in 4 states simultaneously. Spare me that crap..

When ortom came in, he granted amnesty to several militia groups in Benue, they laid down their weapons for destruction but where are they now? Weapons don't come cheap, who is sponsoring this people? Are they actually herdsmen?

I can bet that all this will vanish again by 2019 to resurface 2 years to the next election. Buhari should remove these governors and declare a state of emergency.
Agriculture / Re: Akwa Ibom To Import 2,000 Pregnant Cattle From Mexico by Toksytoks(m): 9:36pm On Mar 07, 2018
Good initiative.
The Nigerian breeds are better in terms of lean meat. The sokoto Gudali, white fulani and white bororo are amazing breeds. Giving the level of care they receive and they still thrive. These foreign breeds will not even yield.
Ranching is good but expensive. That is why grazing reserves are still in vogue even in developed countries. Countries that practice ranching actually subsidize each cattle per head. In europe each cow is paid a subsidized with $2 per day to keep the cost of meat products low.
Imagine a farmer with 100 cows, he would require a plot of land per 10 cows minimum. The yearly cost of leasing this land has to be divided by these cows per head to cover this cost. Cost of feeding a cow per day, 500 - 1000 naira, a year 365k per cow. In 2 years 700k, add the cost of land lease. Can we afford to buy cows for 700k?
These are the factors to consider.

Politics / Re: FG To Establish Mobile Police Base In Southern Kaduna - IGP by Toksytoks(m): 12:11pm On Jan 01, 2017
Nigerians complain a lot without first dissecting the fundamentals. Nigeria as a country is grossly underpoliced. The potency of every police force in the world is hinged primarily on numerical strength, passion, technology and support.

367,000 police officers in a country with 200m inhabitants is abysmally poor and pathetic. An average of 2 officers to a 1000 citizens in a country with 967,000 sqkm, such huge landmass. Half of these depleted police officers are attached to VIPs ranging from counsellors wife to the hottest Musician in town. Davido has 2 mobile police officers attached to him.

Telecommunications equipment/radio gadgets poor, no patrols vans in most cities except Lagos.

I was in my town few months back, a small town in Kogi state with a population of 40,000 is manned by one police 'post' with 2 officers. These officers have just one bike and no walkie-talkie. They rely on GSM phones to communicate so they don't get live feeds. The army which provides occasional support is stretched now with activities in the NE, ND and other parts of the country so the police force is totally helpless.

If bandits attack my community they will have a free day over and over again. No government can effectively solve this problem without first addressing the need for decentralization of the force, recruitment, renumeration, equipment and training.

The sad incident that happened in southern Kaduna can happen anywhere. Establishing a base in Southern Kaduna will calm the tension but won't solve the fundamental issue.
Politics / Re: Senate Rejects CBN Proposal To Punish People For Ownership Of Forex by Toksytoks(m): 7:53pm On Nov 21, 2016
Some people's ignorance here is appalling. Why on earth will anyone keep foreign cash proceeds of any legitimate business. Such people either want to exploit the system through forex manipulation or hide illegal funds.

In south Africa all forex earned must be returned to the bank the next working day. India has 90 days to change all foreign currencies and 180 days for drafts, while individuals can only hold up $2000. This amount must have been acquired outside India.

Nigeria is a dungeon where unscrupulous elements hide millions of dollars at home thus making the naira weaker. The economy is dollarised, greed and corruption is all we know.

Politics / Re: Buhari To NNPC: Search For Oil In Benue Trough by Toksytoks(m): 1:27pm On Sep 18, 2016
All NNPC needs to do is to look for a partner and enter into a joint venture. Even if we want to diversify, Nigeria with its size and population has huge energy requirements. Oil is not just crude for export, we need fuel for cars, jet fuel for aircrafts, gas to fire power turbines, cooking gas for local consumption, asphalt to lay roads, ethanol and several other by products which petrol chemical industries depend on.
Diversification does not stop us from exploring this domestic potentials. It makes no sense again to depend on pipelines from Niger Delta to fire gas turbines up north or other parts of the country.

Health / Re: Mayowa Ahmed: LUTH Releases Press Statement On #savemayowa by Toksytoks(m): 7:04pm On Jul 29, 2016
Your reasoning is shallow..far too shallow.
Mayowa is an old patient means she has had a prior encounter at the hospital which may be unrelated to this case. According to her, she is a Sickle cell disease patient, may be she had been managed in LUTH for sickle cell crisis as a child. Hospitals keep records for years.

You have no idea about her previous experience or encounter at LUTH but you are quick to jump into a conclusion of misdiagnosis.

Abdominal masses are very easy to pick even to the layman and a tertiary hospital will not base there report on another report. If LUTH is gonna refer her, they will have to write their report according to their findings. This they cannot do in 24hrs. The whole thing appears shady, you can't get a referral in 24hrs.

If she is already at stage 4 ovarian cancer with sickle cell and liver metastases then no hospital will attempt any procedure on her. Not even Emory in the US...at best she will be referred to a hospice home.

Any surgical procedure will take her life faster than the cancer itself at this state. She can't even survive anaesthesia which usually is a problem in sickle cell patients.

Transporting her to either Dubai or US is another issue..she will need an air ambulance. All these weren't properly ironed out.

Don't be too quick to make statement like this in public. It only shows you rarely think critically.

magicminister:
i really do not understand the press release by LUTH.

1- They said Mayowa is an old patient of theirs already on treatment for another ailment??

what i understood from this is that she was misdiagnosed and was treated for different ailment instead of cancer for a very long time.
The family discovered it was stage 4 cancer after getting diagnosis from another hospital.

2- This 31year-old lady came into the Private Wing of LUTH on Monday, 25th July, 2016 with a history and clinical features of an intra-abdominal mass. The family and the patient brought along some results of laboratory investigations ordered and done from outside LUTH.

They only knew she had cancer or "mass " after she was diagnosed by another hospital.

Why in the holy hell would the family continue treatment with luth if they weren't able to diagnose the right disease in the first instance?
Now they are saying they wanted to conduct another batch of test?? I believe this process will take another couple of months and its obvious every second is crucial for mayowa.

3- the family however requested to fly Miss Ahmed outside the country barely 24 hours after her admission in LUTH,
So, basically they have been treating her for a mis-dagnosed ailment for a long time and only admitted her after they came with test results from other hospitals.

Nigerian public hospitals are a disgrace.

Come on guys, let's be real here. Most of us will go above and beyond for the people we love. I wouldn't wait for any quack doctor in a public hospital to give me diagnosis before making my own moves.

I don't see any scam here.

Fertiliser Subsidy: How Nigeria Short Changes Farmers

OCTOBER 3, 2013

"Abubakar Jibrin is a young farmer in Kumo town of Gombe State in Northern Nigeria. During the last Ramadan season in July-August, while other Muslim faithful fasted and prayed, and rested from the scorching sun, he pedalled his bicycle to Kembu, six kilometres away to receive two bags of fertiliser which government allocated to him at a subsidised rate.

Jibrin has about two hectres of farmland where he plants rice, maize, millet and groundnuts, and requires between about six bags of fertiliser to nourish it. At the market price of N6,000 per bag, he would need N36,000 to purchase the volume of fertiliser he requires.

Early in the year, when he heard about a new federal government fertiliser subsidy scheme which would enable him buy two bags at N2,750 each, Jibrin quickly joined the queue to register.

Months later, he got a text message telling him his subsidised fertiliser was ready. But he had to travel 6 kilometres to redeem it. Even though he was fasting, religiously, he rode his bicycle to Kembu.

But he got no fertiliser even after undertaking the journey three times.

“I went there thrice, from here to Kembu about 6 kilometers, on bicycle. But whenever we got there, we discovered that the workers had not arrived,” he said.

“Even when they come to distribute, they don’t follow the queue. They will just be giving the fertiliser to people outside the queue….even if they are not registered farmers.”

Frustrated, Jibrin stopped going to Kembu for fertiliser and was forced to buy a few bags at the market price of N6,000 each.

Babajide Awoyelu, a farmer in Kajola Ijesha in Atakumosa West local government area of Osun State in Southwest Nigeria, had a similar experience. In February, he registered under the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) scheme.

He received an SMS alert in May to go to Osu to collect two bags of fertiliser for N5,500. Awoyelu went to the redemption centre several times but always went home empty handed.

“They promised to give us two bags of fertiliser, vegetables seedlings and chemicals but they kept on saying the items have not been brought to them. I stopped going because I saw they were deceiving us,” he said.

Jibrin and Awoyelu are just two of many Nigerian farmers who registered for the GES scheme but got no fertiliser during this year’s farming season.

The scheme was introduced in 2012 by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to provide subsidised inputs, including fertiliser and improved seeds, to farmers.

Under the scheme, the federal government subsidised fertiliser by 25 per cent and the state governments are expected to add another 25 per cent subsidy so that farmers could purchase at N2,750 per bag instead of between N5,000 and N6,000, which is the market price."

The whole fertilizer subsidy thing was a scam, the fertilizer trucks were bought by rich business men and diverted as farm as Sudan , Mali. The Government can offer other support like loans, agro insurance , enhance seeds , storage and mechanized inputs.
Crime / Re: Man Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver On 3rd Mainland Bridge (viewers Discretion) by Toksytoks(m): 4:30pm On Mar 20, 2016
The is no reason for anyone to be on foot on 3rd mainland bridge. It is recklessness and suicidal. The speed limit on the bridge is 120km/h. The driver committed no offence at all. Deaths on the highway are classified as Suicide. Braking suddenly at 120km/HR can lead to multiple accidents.

No law will punish the driver, Lagos State Government will confiscate the corpse and the family will be made to pay a fine.

Same way people fly across ikorodu road recklessly, right underneath the pedestrian bridge. Government had to construct a mesh fence on ikorodu expressways years back to fence of humans, fences are meant for animals in sane societies.

overboard:

The chances of them them dying from this percentage of burns is over 90% anywhere in the world. Quote me. Their lungs and kidneys wouldn't survive the damage, infections will overwhelm the system. Potassium released from damaged cells will shut the kidney down in days. Our bodies are not designed to withstand this..
Most burns victim will look stable, first 24hrs but the complications set in much later and it becomes a battle.
The chances of survival is less than 5%

I'm no medical doctor but I was like "ah, these ones don survive na", so imagine my pain to learn that they both died! We need to do something about our health system.

Where were they taken to, what was the treatment given to them? It is pertinent that we know.

Any one with insight and info please educate us.

Most people here don't understand the physiology of burns. It is easy to stand from afar and manage burns. Those guys suffered over 95% burns, partial thickNess burns, the mortality rate is over 90% even in developed countries. The complications of burns starts after 48hrs progressing rapidly till day 7 . Pain is the list of their problems, the nerve endings are damaged so they will probably not feel the instant pain.
The major issues are fluid loss, oedema, laryngeal oedema for inhalational injury, electrolyte imbalance, kidney failure, infection/sepsis.
It was a bad case.

What year did u graduate from Ilorin? There are signs of rejection in a post renal transplant patient. If you don't know them, go back to your books or go back and re enrol for internship.

Vomiting, abdominal distension, abdominal pain , respiratory distress..what else do you need. You suggested a quick ex lap in such patient, please do me a favour and gerrout of here.

Now, I want you to point out where exactly in that write-ups that the patient had renal shut-down, uraemia and all those complications you were mentioning like a 400l medical student....

He was a post-kidney transplant patient, and so what?? So because of that you would restrict fluids abi

where in the world would you do a "quick ex lap" a stressful surgery on a patient with such comorbidities - renal shutdown, uremia , possible pulmonary edema , hypertension, circulatory overload and all. what anaesthetic route are you gonna employ? Chaz B IN THAT STATE CANNOT SURVIVE THE RIGORS OF SURGERY.

My submission....

1) I am a medical doctor, so I have every right to comment here

2) Dr kevwe (or whatever his name was) was very likely a house officer, the most junior doctor in the cadre. I'm sure he was a freebie, fresh out of .medical school. But sad to say, he is a very stupid person and his license needs re-evaluation. Because when someone is vomiting and complaining of pains, didn't he know that the next thing is to resuscitate and give fluids, then call the surgeon on call for a quick ex-lap to relieve the obstruction??

3) the next senior doctor on call (likely Dr balogun) is very lazy, and can never make it if he continues this way. Your junior doctor called you for an emergency, and you were there giving silly instructions "call this, call that" even with the Lagos traffic, one hour would still save a life....

4) the anaesthetist did his job, he was just informed late, by the two stupid docs balogun and kevwe....

5) that hospital needs a overhaul, a panel must be set-up to investigate the matter, and prices have to be paid, at least to set an example to other lazy and negligent docs....

In conclusion, being a doctor is no child's play, the health sector in Nigeria is in shambles, but Mrs chazB has to move on, her husband is gone, nothing can bring him back....

Thank you

Chaz B was a post renal transplant patient, he has had two major medical issues after the transplant which necessitated a laparotomy . Before we kill the hospital and the doctors, few people need to understand prognosis of renal transplant.

In America where best medical care is obtainable, 5 year survival chance is about 80% if post transplant treatment is carried out in the same center. He had his transplant in India, he had to fly back for another surgery few weeks after the transplant in India. Post renal Care in Nigeria was not too good, i am sure he did not get the necessary post renal support he needed.

one thing a renal transplant patient needs to be wary of are symptoms and signs of rejection. Chaz B's body had rejected the kidney and he had signs that were clear. so what was his post transplant treatment and follow up like? Nephrologists, General surgeon , cardiologists , Dietitian ( very important ) , Internal physician asides immunosuppressants.

He probably had uremia as a result of poor kidney function, Intestinal obstruction as a result of Lymphocele , complications of the renal transplant itself and laparotomy he had few weeks after his transplant.

FLUID THERAPY - in a patient with evidence of renal shut down not the best option.
ANALGESICS - no way

NG TUBE INSERTION ? - maybe to empty the content of the stomach , but the reason for the abdominal distention was most like fluid retention as a result of chronic renal failure.

UREMIA - only urgent dialysis could have saved him , but was he stable enough for the procedure? UREA shuts down the heart and brain in minutes.

Respiratory distress - Pulmonary edema, aspiration. This sums up a bad case, which St. Nicholas wasn't prepared for. Are the consultants full time employees of St Nicholas or part time. What is the working hours stated in the employment offer. Most doctors work 3 jobs to keep body and soul together, so dishing out instructions via the phone is part of the modus operandi.

only few hospitals can afford to keep 4 consultants on physical call every night, i doubt if there is anyone in Lagos. The healthcare system is messed up, poor training , poor remuneration , poor financing , poor and obsolete equipment. Government will not finance training , banks will not finance equipment purchase. Banks will rather finance oil and gas, shopping malls and telecoms projects.

Is Dr. Kevwe at fault? No. He transferred the case to his superiors who were supposed to take over.

we are quick to descend on doctors every time without critical analysis. so many Nigerian doctors have been 'bashed' away to other countries. Australia is recruiting them daily paying them up to 4600 dollars weekly, UK wants them , US and UAE. You down here call them block head.

Chaz B's case was bad, what he needed was a multi disciplinary team in a word class facility to save him. This is at today is not available in Nigeria.

This same thing happened to my 2009 Honda accord. I allowed a mechanic clean my injector head and he messed up my car. The idle went up and my car started consuming fuel and I found it hard to reduce my speed or slow down..the would push forward eachtime. I tried the idle re-learn it didnt work I went to oyingbo and had the black switch on the Injector head changed..the problem resolved but the check engine light is still on. I have tried all forms of scanning, the check engine light will dusappear onlybto reappear after few days. Change the black switch/sensor on the injector mouth or get a new injector head..the idle will normalize but as for the check engine light I have resigned my fate . Do not allow anyone clean your injector again.
klipse:
Hi Nlanders,

I had my injectors cleaned and changed my 4 plugs. My mechanic said he cleaned the injector head with thinner and applied oil treatment to stop a tampering sound from the engine. Now my car drives quieter but the idle is high. around 1500 to 1800 on cold start and drops to 1200 rpm.

How can I reduce the idle to the factory default at 700? I read stuff online and it said I have to perform the idle re-learn procedure, what is that?

If in less than two years to go, I went to the stock market to raise N85billion and it was fully subscribed and you know bankers do not want to lose money; they know what is coming from that and they keyed in; with these projects people earn income and because they earn income, they pay taxes. We are simply moving the money round.
In 1999, when my predecessor took over, we were working with N14 billion IGR and we are now having a budget of almost half a trillion naira and how do you want us to finance that? Is it the money under the pillow? You can’t build a city like that. We want rail and all that, you don’t do it waiting for people to bring kobo kobo.
For instance, the track Europeans built are still there. It is a 100-year asset. You have to finance it by debt and it will pay off.
During Tinubu’s time, when he drew N15 billion out of N25 billion bond, they said he had mortgaged Lagos.
I paid that debt in my first year in the office. The first bond that we took is maturing this year.
It is a N50 billion bond. We have N90 billion in trustees account to pay off N50billion.
If we keep waiting until the money gathers together, you can’t begin to tell me that there is no road to your house. Where am I supposed to build them? The road that Asiwaju built with N15 billion, I can’t touch again with the same amount of money. The dollar was trading at less than one to a naira, but it is almost doubled.
When I assumed office, the dollar was at $1 to N112 and we were borrowing at 10 per cent. Now you are lucky to get at 17 per cent.
Dollar is now $1 to over N170. Those are the realities and we must salute our economic team for the investment they have been able to achieve.
If not for that, would you have LASU-Iba Road, that rail, or make Ikorodu Road motorable today; Badagry expressway and others? The money we are spending on Ikorodu Road is a loan. It’s a long-term loan. Take the money now and pay back later as long as the people continue to pay their taxes and financial capacity continues. "

Dangote is the richest black man in the world with a networth of 25 billion dollars. whenever he wants to expand his conglomerate he takes loans. despite his huge profit after tax, he took a loan to finance Obajana and ibeshe. Only myopic people finance capital projects from earnings.
