Alyokhina is no stranger to Russian crackdowns on free speech. The activist has been jailed several times in the years since Pussy Riot burst on the scene more than a decade ago, using punk music to mock the corrupt relationship between the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church.

But Russia's persistent attempts to silence Alyokhina — she was jailed six times since last summer, according to The Times — have done little to stifle her and her group mates' activism. Alyokhina told the outlet she was dedicated to remaining in Russia in spite of ongoing scrutiny from authorities until the country invaded Ukraine in February.

Alyokhina said she was sitting in a jail cell when she heard Putin's speech on February 21 that would ultimately set the stage for full-out war.

"I don't think Russia has a right to exist anymore," she told The Times. "Even before, there were questions about how it is united, by what values it is united, and where it is going. But now I don't think that is a question anymore.".

In the months since Russia launched its invasion, Putin has escalated his efforts to crack down on opposition to the war in Ukraine. Alyokhina's pending house arrest was converted to 21 days in a penal colony, she told the outlet, leading her to make the decision to try and escape.

In an interview with The Times, she described the steps she took to get away, including dressing as a food deliverer to bypass Moscow police who were stationed outside her friend's apartment where she was staying. She left without her cellphone out of fear of being tracked.

One of her friends then drove her to the Belarusian border, she told the newspaper. She was stuck in the Russian-friendly country for a week before she was able to enter Lithuania. She had already been placed on a Russian "wanted" list and said she avoided hotels or anywhere she would have to provide identification. On her third attempt, she was finally able to cross into Lithuania, she told the outlet, noting the help of a travel document from an unnamed European country.

"I was happy that I made it," because it was a blow to Russian authorities, Alyokhina said. "I still don't understand completely what I've done."

Other members of the Pussy Riot collective have also joined Alyokhina in Lithuania as part of the growing exodus of Russians, according to the outlet. The group is scheduled to perform in Berlin later this week as part of a European tour to raise funds for Ukraine.


Alyokhina said she hopes one day to return to her native Russia, though the possibility of that happening anytime soon seems unlikely.

The heads of the Tomsk, Saratov, Kirov and Mari El regions announced their immediate departures from office, while the head of Ryazan region said he would not run for another term.

Elections are scheduled to take place in all five regions in September.

Though Russian regional governors are elected, they are politically subordinate to the Kremlin. Several of the outgoing governors represent regions where the ruling bloc United Russia took weak vote shares in parliamentary elections last year.

Unpopular governors are regularly removed from office, often submitting their resignations in clusters in the spring months.

Ilya Grashchenkov, head of the Centre for the Development of Regional Politics think tank in Moscow, said the Kremlin was removing weak governors amid a worsening economic outlook for the country, driven by Western sanctions.

Grashchenkov said: “There’s a need to restructure the economy, especially in those regions where Western economic influence had been significant. These governors need to be replaced by younger alternatives.”

I have come here to raise this issue because i believe someone must have passed through what i am going through at the moment.

There is this Lady i met in March, she is super classy and has all the curves and looks like a model. What brought us together was just a friendly convo and a friendly tease that i admire her nails and since then she has been all over me.
She asked me if i lived alone and i told her i currently stay with a friend because i just relocated to the city based on job hunting levels. She asked what my plan was and i told her that i would like to first get an apartment while i sort out other things.

I don't know what exactly she does for a living although she said she sells women hairs, bags and shoes. I have actually seen her post them on her whatsapp. What surprise me the most was that she doesn't deny me access to her phone. This made me to loosen my grip a bit regarding my phone privacy ... Then one day, she saw a loan app message requesting me to pay my outstanding debt, she asked me how come and i told her the truth that i was seriously broke and i wanted to take her out. I wanted the two of us to go swim together and have fun. And that was why i took the loan. She frowned and asked why i was stressing myself to impress her .
She transfered some money to me to offset the debt. it all happened like juju. i am still trying to wrap my head around that.

I am trying my best to fit in with her but something is really off somewhere. I don't want to assume i know entirely what she does for a living but then, i have grown to really admire her. I wouldn't want to call it love but all my thoughts are always about her nowadays. Like 4 days ago i questioned her about some friends of hers i saw on her icloud and since then she has been giving me tough time.

Lately, she told me point blank that if i cant get my own apartment, she'll have to stop dating me. she said she is ready to even pay part of the money involved but a nigga got nothing to afford even a face me and face you room. I have tried my best to explain to her how i am even surviving and how broke i am to get a 150k self con. She keeps saying i am going to get a job and ill be fine, that i am a man and i will certainly raise the money if she as a lady can raise part of it.

I dont know why she believes so much in that tho cuz i have been very opened to her. My mind has been filled up and i dont have anyone to share it with thats why i brought it here. i have my doubts about her but i love her.

Vladimir Putin has reportedly lost his 39th and 40th colonels in the Ukraine war, adding to Russia’s mounting losses in the conflict.

Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Blinov’s death was confirmed on Monday, when a photo emerged of his picture on a grave in Volgograd, south-western Russia.


Russian officials had previously denied that the colonel, who served as a commander in a motorised rifle unit, had been killed.

Mr Blinov was a married father-of-three and a family friend confirmed the news to a local paper, saying: “Unfortunately, today it became known about the death of my friend Sasha Blinov in Ukraine. For us, it’s just a shock.”

He would be the 40th colonel to have died in the war.

That news came after the reported death of Russia’s 39th colonel, Fezul Bichikaev - an elite soldier who allegedly died on a secret intelligence mission.

A military expert, Oleg Marzoev, reportedly told a local news website that Mr Bichikaev acted with “self-sacrifice and heroism”.

He was one of Russia’s youngest colonels and was killed near Kharkiv, local media reported.

Earlier, it was reported that Lieutenant Colonel Fyodor Evgenievich Solovyov had become the 38th Russian colonel to have died in the war in Ukraine.


A Russian report said that the 44-year-old was a commander of a howitzer self-propelled artillery regiment and that he was awarded the Order of Courage.


Russia’s battlefield losses and demonstrable operational failings stopped President Putin from announcing a success in the war at the Victory Day parade, the British defence ministry has claimed.

“Russia’s underestimation of Ukrainian resistance and its ‘best case scenario’ planning have led to demonstrable operational failings, preventing President Putin from announcing significant military success in Ukraine at the 9 May Victory Day parade,” the ministry claimed in an intelligence update.


It added that Russia’s invasion plan was “highly likely” to have been based on the assumption that it would encounter limited resistance during the invasion of Ukraine.
