Amazon has become the second publicly traded company in the US to be valued at a $1 trillion, just weeks after tech giant Applebecame the first to reach the historic milestone. The company’s stock price rose 1.7 per cent in trading on Tuesday morning, to $2,050.50 per share, putting its market value at just over $1 trillion. Together, Amazon and Apple now make up more than 8 per cent of the entire value of the S&P 500, according to CNN. The achievement was not an unexpected one for the Seattle-based company, the value of which has more than doubled in the last year alone. The Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria, VON, Osita Okechukwu, has admitted that President Muhamnadu Buhari short-changed the South East in his appointment into political offices. Okechukwu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, said he will be an idiot to say otherwise but swiftly added that the President has covered up in other areas, especially through projects. Speaking with Punch, Okechukwu noted that Igbos are nowhere in the nation’s security apparatus; the NNPC and others, but maintained that appointments were temporal........ A friend shared this occurrence which he claimed happened to him life in an Owerri hotel, three months ago. Ray (not real name) entered Owerri by 12 midnight via one of the smaller buses. At the first round-about by the iconic church, he took his meal as usual from one of the neat, businesslike road side hawkers, before proceeding on leg to this popular hotel close to the iconic church. Ray got a room for N3,000 for the night, paying before inspection. Ray said that he complained on discovering that the second floor room given to him had no key, to which the service boy glibly replied that he should not worry, as he was safer in the the hotel than in a police station. And since it was already 1:00 am, Ray decided to manage the situation, having never ever experienced any bad happenstance in any Igbo town; and he had been to several, as a Yoruba businessman who saw Igbo people as kinsmen, even defending the Igbo anywhere...... Eating an egg a day may lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, a study of more than 400,000 adults in China suggests. Daily egg eaters had an 18% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, which manifests as heart attacks and strokes, compared with adults who avoided eggs, according to the research published Monday in the journal Heart. Commonly called heart disease, cardiovascular disease includes heart failure, arrhythmias and heart valve problems in addition to strokes and attacks. Raised blood pressure, carrying too much weight or obesity, and elevated blood sugar all contribute to the risk of cardiovascular disease, which is triggered by unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking and harmful use of alcohol. ‘Controversial’ nutrition source In the past, doctors sometimes warned patients to avoid eating too many eggs. Though eggs contain high-quality protein and other positive nutritional components, they also have high amounts of cholesterol, which was thought might be harmful, explained Canqing Yu, a co-author of the study and an associate professor in the Peking University School of Public Health in Beijing. Some foods better for your brain, memory Some foods better for your brain, memory Yet “existing studies on the association between egg and cardiovascular diseases are controversial due to small sample size and limited information,” Yu wrote in an email. Past studies have provided only limited evidence from the Chinese population, “which have huge differences in dietary habits, lifestyle behaviors and diseases patterns,” Yu said. These are among the reasons why he and his colleagues decided to investigate the relationship between eating eggs and cardiovascular disease. To begin, they used information from an ongoing study of half a million adults living in 10 regions of China. They concentrated on 416,213 participants who’d never been diagnosed with cancer, cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Slightly more than 13% of these adults, ranging in age from 30 to 79, said they ate about an egg a day while just over 9% reported never or very rarely enjoying an egg. Nearly all the participants ate chicken, not duck, eggs, Yu noted. Over nearly nine years, the research team tracked this select group. They focused on major coronary events, such as heart attacks and strokes, including hemorrhagic strokes — when a blood vessel bursts in the brain due, usually, to uncontrolled high blood pressure — and ischemic strokes — when a blood vessel feeding the brain becomes blocked, usually by a blood clot. “Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of deaths in China, which accounted for half of the total mortality,” Yu said. “Stroke, including hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke, is the first cause of premature death, followed by ischemic heart disease.” During follow-up, 9,985 people died of cardiovascular disease, and an additional 5,103 major coronary events occurred. Nearly 84,000 other participants were diagnosed with heart disease in this time period. Analyzing the data, the researchers found that eating about an egg a day related to a lower risk of heart disease compared with not eating eggs. Are eggs healthy? Are eggs healthy? In fact, participants who ate up to one egg daily had a 26% lower risk of hemorrhagic stroke, which is more common in China than in the United States or other high-income countries. Additionally, the egg eaters had a 28% lower risk of dying from this type of stroke. Finally, egg eaters also enjoyed a 12% reduced risk of ischemic heart.... Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari for suggesting that national security is superior to the rule of law. He said Nigerians should expect certain actions that will justify the president’s declaration. Buhari made the comment at the opening ceremony of the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Monday. In a statement Thursday, titled ‘Buhari’s Pernicious Doctrine”, Soyinka said: “At his first coming, it was ‘I intend to tamper with Freedom of the Press,’ and Buhari did proceed to suit action to the words, sending two journalists – Irabor and Thompson – to prison as a reward for their professional integrity. “Now, a vague, vaporous, but commodious concept dubbed “national interest” is being trotted out as alibi for flouting the decisions of the Nigerian judiciary. President Buhari has obviously given deep thought to his travails under a military dictatorship, and concluded that his incarceration was also in the ‘national interest.’ “We have cause to be thankful for the advance....... Nightmares could be ‘turned off’, new research suggests. Scientists have discovered two genes that are responsible for nightmares and dreams, which both occur during deep sleep, also known as rapid eye movement (REM). REM occurs in mammals, including humans, and was thought to play an important role in maintaining their wellbeing, as well as storing memories. Yet when the researchers removed two genes that cause REM sleep in mice, they were surprised to discover the animals continued to live as normal, despite previous studies suggesting ....... More gun deaths happened outside of war than in it during the years researchers examined (1990 through 2016) in 195 countries and territories. Worldwide, an estimated 251,000 people died by gun in 2016. In 1990, there were 209,000 firearm-related deaths. Accounting for population growth, that’s an annualized rate decrease of 0.9%. People are living longer, but violent deaths are on the rise Gun deaths are predominantly concentrated in six countries that make up less than 10% of the world’s population. The United States, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and Guatemala together account for more than half of the gun-related deaths worldwide. In 2016, the majority of global firearm deaths — an estimated 64% — were homicides. Suicides accounted for 27% of the gun deaths. A small fraction, about 9% of gun deaths, were accidental. If you were to look on a map, the highest numbers of gun-related homicides are concentrated in a belt that stretches from Mexico through the Caribbean to Brazil. Many of these homicides involve drug cartels, the authors suggest, and there’s a problem with organized crime and the illegal gun trade. El Salvador saw the greatest concentration of gun-related homicides in 2016, with 38.9 per 100,000 people. By comparison, Singapore, the country that had the fewest, had 0.1 gun-related homicides per 100,000. “The sheer magnitude of these deaths and the range in firearm-related deaths is extraordinary,” said the study’s senior author, Chris Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. Increase in accidental deaths follows spike in gun sales, study finds The most vulnerable demographic to gun violence was men between 20 and 24 years old. Men were also the biggest ...... Violent crimes, knife stabs, acid attacks and others marred the Notting Hill Carnival. A typical victim was slashed as crowds dispersed from the Notting Hill Carnival on Bank Holiday Monday. Over the weekend more than 400 people were arrested and 69 weapons were seized – including acid, metal pole and a stun gun – as police implemented new stop and search powers and rolled out the use of ‘knife arches’ at the event for the first time in its history to clamp down on the amount of weapons being sneaked in. It comes as Iain Duncan Smith demanded police should dramatically increase the use of stop ..... Read more at http://www.naijapoint.com.ng/2018/08/28/violent-crimes-mar-notting-hill-carnival/

REM occurs in mammals, including humans, and was thought to play an important role in maintaining their wellbeing, as well as storing memories. Yet when the researchers removed two genes that cause REM sleep in mice, they were surprised to discover the animals continued to live as normal, despite previous studies suggesting REM is crucial for survival. By being able to remove the genes that code for dreams in mice, scientists could theoretically prevent people from having nightmares in the future. Nightmares could be 'turned off' after scientists discover two genes for dreams (stock) Nightmares could be ‘turned off’ after scientists discover two genes for dreams (stock) CAN INSOMNIA BE PSYCHOLOGICAL? Insomnia may be psychological, research suggested in May 2017. Sufferers who take placebo pills feel more rested than those who get no treatment at all, according to a review of 13 studies. According to the researchers, the simple act of taking a pill may ease the anxiety that makes it harder for some insomnia sufferers to fall asleep. Dr Patrick Finan from Johns Hopkins University, who was not involved in the study, said: ‘Insomnia is shaped by expectation and perception, so it is not surprising that placebos, which implicitly alter expectation, are effective in improving perceptions of sleep.’ The researchers, from the University of Sydney, examined data from a total of 566 insomnia sufferers who were assigned to either receive a placebo that they believed was an active treatment or no pills at all. Placebo patients reported greater improvements in their ability to fall asleep, the total amount of rest they got and their sleep quality. Comparing placebo against recognised insomnia therapies can give inaccurate results as simply believing you are receiving a sleep-inducing treatment can ease the condition. Study author Dr Ben Colagiuri, said: ‘The comparison with no treatment means that we can be sure that the improvement we observed was due to a genuine placebo effect, rather than being an artifact of simply taking part in a trial.’ Insomnia may be considered a condition of the mind due to one person averaging four hours sleep a night and feeling sufficiently rested, while another may get seven hours and feel the amount or quality of their shut eye is inadequate, Dr Finan explained. Deep sleep may not be essential for survival The researchers, from The University of Tokyo, genetically modified mice so they no longer had genes that coded for the chemical messenger acetylcholine, which is released in high amounts when mammals are in REM sleep. Removing these genes involved knocking out two genes known as Chrm 1 and 3, which are widely distributed across different regions of the brain. Removing Chrm 1 caused the mice to have short, fragmented periods of REM sleep, while taking out Chrm 3 reduced their length of non-REM shut eye. When both genes were removed, the mice had almost no REM sleep but still managed to survive. This was surprising given previous research that suggests rats who do not get REM sleep die. Based on their findings, published in the journal Cell Reports, the researchers believe REM sleep may not be essential for survival, at least in domesticated animals. Alternatively, mice without Chrm 1 and 3 may have a reduced need for REM sleep, they added. Do dreams help people cope? Scientists from Harvard University designed an experiment that determined the extent to which dreams are a precise replay of a person’s recent experiences. For two weeks, 29 healthy young adults kept a detailed log of their daytime activities and emotional concerns. They also wrote down any dreams they recalled when they woke up. External judges then compared the reports of the participants’ waking activities with their dreams. Out of the 299 dream reports collected, a clear rerun of ........... Roman Abramovich is ready to sell off Premier league side Chelsea to anyone who is ready to part with £2.5bn. A report by The Times UK states that Abramovich has received numerous inquiries since visa problems this summer led him to put on hold the £1 billion redevelopment of Stamford Bridge, but he is not actively looking to sell the club. Chelsea sources insisted yesterday that Abramovich remains committed to the club and has no plans to sell following reports of a failed bid from Silver Lake, an American private equity company which was seeking to buy a minority stake. Abramovich has also retained Joe Ravitch, of the Raine Group, a boutique bank specialising in sport, technology and media, to broker a sale but the group has acted as consultants for Chelsea… vanguardngr
