Education › Re: 15 Prison Inmates Get Scholarship To University Level. by Tolexander: 6:24pm On Aug 14, 2013 |
hod898: Fifteen inmates of Umuahia prison have been offered scholarship to study up to university level from a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Back to the Heroes Past (BATHEP). Rev. Fr. Christian Anokwuru, who is the Director of the Umuahia-based organisation, said this on friday, when he led other members of the organisation to inmates of Afara Prison, Umuahia. Anokwuru said the NGO has a scholarship scheme for prisons inmates across the country who want to go to school. According to him, the organisation would register the 15 inmates in Umuahia for the next General Certificate of Education (GCE) as well and provide legal aid for indigent ones who were yet to be arraigned because of their inability to get counsel. "For those of you, who have not been tried because of your inability to hire a lawyer, BATHEP will help you to get a lawyer so that you will be tried. We are not saying that we will be set you free but we will help you to get judgement. If you are convicted, you serve your jail terms or go home a free man if you are acquitted," the cleric said. He explained that part of the organisation's major project was to help in rehabilitating those that had served their prison terms by training them in some skills and help to establish those that had already learnt some trade by giving them direct employment in the organisation's workshop. Meanwhile, the presiding judge, E. T Okara has adjourne the case for August 20 for motion on notice. sauce? ? |

Politics › 300 Nigerian Girls Languish In Libyan Prisons – YAMIDR by Tolexander(op): 12:38pm On Aug 14, 2013 |
THE Initiative for Youth Awareness on Migration, Immigration, Development and Re-integration, IYAMIDR, yesterday, raised alarm that over 300 Nigerian girls are languishing in different prisons in Libya.
It called on the Federal Government to exploit the bilateral pact with the Libyan Government to secure their release.
President of IYAMIDR, Solomon Okoduwa, who briefed newsmen in Benin City, Edo State on the hardship faced by Nigerians in Libya since the war in that country, thanked the Founder of All Nation for Christ Synagogue, Pastor T.B Joshua for assisting hundreds of returnees with cash as rehabilitation packages, noting the need for the Federal Government to intervene.
Okoduwa, who fled Libya during the 2011 uprising, said that the Nigerian girls in Libyan prisons were being asked to pay between $400 and $600 through agents believed to be working for the Libyan authorities before they can secure their release.
He urged the Federal Government to review her foreign policy with a view to ensuring adequate protection of Nigerian Citizens in the Diaspora.
According to him, “government should as a matter of urgency expedite action by coming to the aide of her citizen, who are willing to return to the country. Apart from the girls, who are being raped every day, we have 700 other Nigerians held by the Libyan maximum prison in the City of Tripoli while others are in Sabha, and Gharian prison situated about 50kilometers from the City of Tripoli.”
He noted that in order to discourage Nigerian youths from traveling illegally to foreign countries, Okoduwa said the group had acquired 17.666 hectares of Oil Palm land located in Ugbogui community in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State and appealed to government to assist in ensuring that the youths were equipped with the needed agricultural tools. courtesy |

The senator who was in Gusau to celebrate the Sallah, also noted that it was better for the media house to talk about the increasing corruption bedeviling the country, instead of such mischievous publication against the senators, describing it “as baseless, un-true and an attempt to tarnish the image of the senate.” the media published the amount he is receiving monthly. It would have been very fair if he had also published the detailed amount he recieves monthly for clarification. He asked the media to face corruption which they are doing. Or is recieving the constituency allowance and keeping it to oneself without a significant constituency project not a part of corruption? The last time i checked, he is currently having no bill for this tenure. Is recieving a salary for the work not done not part of corruption? Not disappointed anyway cos it came out of a senator that knows nothing than to throw punches at a colleague. |
