Politics / Nigerian Army Decorates 23 New Generals by torin: 7:13am On Nov 20, 2019 |
Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, on Tuesday, decorated the newly promoted Major Generals and Brigadier Generals with their new ranks. The decorated generals comprising one major general and 22 brigadier generals are among the recently promoted officers by the army authorities. About 34 brigadier generals and 47 colonels were recently promoted to the next rank of major general and brigadier general respectively. While congratulating the newly decorated generals, Buratai urged them to remain responsive in the discharge of the constitutional duties. He said that the new ranks had placed the officers in position to take higher responsibilities, adding that they must be responsive to their troops as well as the training needs of their units. Buratai also urged them to remain steadfast for the tasks ahead of them, advising them to see their promotion as a call to more service. “You must remain responsive to your duties, responsive to your troops, responsive to the training needs of your units,” he said. The Chief of Defence Intelligence, AVM Mohammed Usman, told the newly promoted generals to see their new ranks as a gift from God. Usman urged them to continue to uphold the constitution in the discharge of their duties, adding that new ranks come with additional responsibilities. “I want you to know that God gives promotion and it comes with additional responsibilities. To whom much is given; much is expected,” he said. Also, the Army Chief of Policy and Plans, Lt.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun, enjoined the new generals to be prepared to face more tasking challenges. “You are now a problem solver not just identifying problems and making suggestions but you must be ready to solve problems. As generals you must be dedicated to service,” he said. https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/11/nigerian-army-decorates-23-new-generals.html?m=1

Education / Lagos Gov. Approves Establishment Of 173 Private Schools by torin: 6:27pm On Nov 19, 2019 |
The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Education, has given approval for the establishment of 173 private schools across the state’s five divisions. The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, made this known while issuing letters of approval to the beneficiaries in Ikeja. Adefisayo said in a statement released on Tuesday that the approval for the private schools was part of efforts to entrench inclusiveness in the education sector. She said that the present administration was willing to partner with critical stakeholders in the Private Education Sector, as a catalyst to take education in the state to the next level. “Despite the fact that the number of schools in Lagos, especially in the private sector, has increased tremendously, the yawning gap between demand and supply clearly shows that more schools are needed to meet our educational target. “We need more private schools to come on board for us to be able to cater to the ever-increasing educational needs of a fast-growing metropolis like ours,” the commissioner said. Adefisayo urged all school owners to reflect excellence in their service delivery, integrate 21st century skills into their teaching methods and to make provision for special students. She urged school owners to employ only qualified teachers, emphasise digital literacy and adhere to the recommended curriculum for teaching. The Director, Private Education and Special Programmes, Mrs Adetutu Adebowale, said that there was the need for school owners to maintain the standard that earned them the approval of the state government. Adebowale said that private school operators could not afford to fail in their complementary role needed to move the sector to greater heights. Responding on behalf of the private nursery and primary schools, Mrs Chinyelu Anidebe, a school proprietor, urged the ministry to always make the new curriculum available on time. Anidebe called on the ministry to update the current curriculum and initiate enlightenment programmes aimed at dissuading parents from encouraging their children to skip primary six. In the same vein, another proprietor, Capt. Femi Olaiya, representing the secondary school subsector, encouraged the ministry to utilise all available media to disseminate information on the criteria for approval to school owners and to also hasten the process. https://thenationonlineng.net/lagos-approves-establishment-of-173-private-schools/amp/

Politics / Local Govt Pensioners Appeal To Government Over Unpaid Gratuities In Kwara by torin: 6:19pm On Nov 19, 2019 |
Pensioners in Kwara state have appealed to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to be more proactive on settling accumulated gratuities of both state and local government retired workers. Speaking during a one-day seminar for local government pensioners in the16 local government areas of the state in Ilorin on Tuesday, the state chairman, Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Alhaji Saidu Oladimeji, said that local government pensioners are being owed gratuities from 2009 till date, while their state counterpart is being owed from 2014 till date. Alhaji Oladimeji, who said that local government pensioners and primary school teachers were being owed payment of arrears of salaries and pension, added that 20 per cent harmonisation had not been paid to local government pensioners. The pensioners also enjoined the state government to do away with consultancy services in the payment of local government salaries, saying that the development had compounded their woes. Also speaking, the state secretary of the union, Comrade Abraham Jonah, lamented that pensioners in the state had not been fairing well over the years, saying that motto of the union, “rest is sweet after labour” had become a mirage. He, however, assured the pensioners that they would soon experience a deserved good living condition, particularly, with steps being taken by present NUP executives. Comrade Jonah harped on unity, peace and love among retirees, saying that the union is the only recognised organisation under the laws of the country, as no splinter group would be accorded any recognition by the federal ministry of Labour and Employment. https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/11/local-govt-pensioners-appeal-to.html?m=1
