Politics / 140 Illegal Structures Up For Demolition In Abuja Communities by torin: 7:11pm On Nov 20, 2019
The Federal Capital Territory Administration will demolish no fewer than 140 illegal structures built on service corridors in Kuruduma II and Kpaduma II communities in Guzape District.

Chief Town Planning Officer, FCT Department of Development Control, Mr. Thompson Hope, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen shortly after inspecting the illegal structures on Wednesday in Abuja.

Hope said the department had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum to the inhabitants of the affected illegal structures in the area, adding that as soon as the ultimatum expires om Monday, November 25, demolition would begin.

He said the development control had marked some of the illegal structures for demolition as far back as two or three years ago.

He also said that the department had carried out several sensitisation campaigns to the indigenous communities for many years, but they had refused to abide by the FCTA regulations on land allocation.

According to him, the indigenous communities and villages had expanded beyond the indigenous settlements and most of the expansion and illegal structure in the areas are being sold by the indigenous communities.

He said the department held several meetings with the leaders of the indigenous peoples on the need for them to stop selling plots of land.

“We have, several times, warned the indigenous communities, including the local chiefs, that all the lands in FCT are vested in the FCT Minister and that they should desist from selling lands.

“Some people are so desperate and desirous to build, thinking that before government takes action they will either make one or two profits out of it.

“These illegal structures are already built on service corridors where plot allottees are desirous to develop their properties; but because of this development along the corridor, they cannot take possession of their plots.

Euro 2020 format is a ‘scandal’ —De Bruyne
“Recently, the FCTA has sent signals to plot allottees to take possession of their plots, else they stand a chance of being revoked and that has put us under enormous pressure as a department.

“By our estimates, we have about 140 illegal structures on these corridors. We have given them seven-day ultimatum and hopefully, by the expiration of the ultimatum, we are coming to demolish all the illegal structures.

“The notice was given to them on Monday, November 18 and it will expire by Monday, November 25

”Hopefully, on Tuesday, we will come with our machines to demolish them,” he said.

On the issue of compensation to the owners of the illegal structures, Hope said compensation was a policy issue that could only be handled by the minister.

Emmanuel Adedeji Oluwatosin, an FBI-wanted scammer was convicted on Tuesday, November 19th by Justice M S. Sifawa of the Sokoto State High court sitting in Sokoto, over $150,000 internet fraud.

Upon arraignment, Adedeji pleaded guilty to the charge. In view of the defendant’s plea, the prosecuting counsel, Musa. Mela Gwani asked the court to convict and sentence the defendant.

The charge reads, “that you Adedeji Emmanuel Oluwatosin, sometime between January and July 2019 at Sokoto within the jurisdiction of the Sokoto State High Court did steal the sum of $150, 000.00 (One Hundred and fifty Thousand Dollars) through wire funds transfer from multiple foreign victims by fraudulent intrusion into their retirement accounts domiciled in United States of America via internet and transferred the said sums into fraudulent business accounts created by you and you withdrew the said funds through ATM Cards and cashier cheques and you thereby committed the offence of Theft contrary to Section 274 of the Sokoto State Penal Code Law 2019 and punishable under Section 275 of the same Law”.

However, the defence counsel, Shamsu A. Dauda, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy as his client was a first time offender who has become remorseful. He also told the court that the convict is ready to restitute the victims by forfeiting his home in Kaduna and two Mercedes Benz cars (Models C550e and C450) to the victims.

Justice Sifawa, thereafter convicted and sentenced the defendant to two (2) years imprisonment with option of Two Million Naira (N2, 000,000.00) fine. He ordered the convict to restitute the victims by forfeiting the proceeds of the said crime: a residential apartment situated at No17/19 Seamans Street, Maigero, Kaduna State and two Mercedes Benz Models C550e and C450 respectively through Asset Forfeiture Unit of the EFCC for disposal and return of the proceeds to the victims of the offence through the US Legal Attaché in Nigeria.

The convict’s journey to prison started on the 29th of August, 2019 when he was arrested in Kaduna at Unguwan Maigero in a luxury apartment, following intelligence by US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on his involvement in internet scams. Items recovered from the residence included two cars (Mercedes Benz C550e, Mercedes Benz C450), an IPhone, laptops, a modem and SIM cards. Wilson Uwujaren

Politics / Nigerian Army Decorates 23 New Generals by torin: 7:13am On Nov 20, 2019
Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, on Tuesday, decorated the newly promoted Major Generals and Brigadier Generals with their new ranks.

The decorated generals comprising one major general and 22 brigadier generals are among the recently promoted officers by the army authorities.

About 34 brigadier generals and 47 colonels were recently promoted to the next rank of major general and brigadier general respectively.

While congratulating the newly decorated generals, Buratai urged them to remain responsive in the discharge of the constitutional duties.

He said that the new ranks had placed the officers in position to take higher responsibilities, adding that they must be responsive to their troops as well as the training needs of their units.

Buratai also urged them to remain steadfast for the tasks ahead of them, advising them to see their promotion as a call to more service.

“You must remain responsive to your duties, responsive to your troops, responsive to the training needs of your units,” he said.

The Chief of Defence Intelligence, AVM Mohammed Usman, told the newly promoted generals to see their new ranks as a gift from God.

Usman urged them to continue to uphold the constitution in the discharge of their duties, adding that new ranks come with additional responsibilities.

“I want you to know that God gives promotion and it comes with additional responsibilities. To whom much is given; much is expected,” he said.

Also, the Army Chief of Policy and Plans, Lt.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun, enjoined the new generals to be prepared to face more tasking challenges.

“You are now a problem solver not just identifying problems and making suggestions but you must be ready to solve problems. As generals you must be dedicated to service,” he said.

Education / Lagos Gov. Approves Establishment Of 173 Private Schools by torin: 6:27pm On Nov 19, 2019
The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Education, has given approval for the establishment of 173 private schools across the state’s five divisions.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, made this known while issuing letters of approval to the beneficiaries in Ikeja.

Adefisayo said in a statement released on Tuesday that the approval for the private schools was part of efforts to entrench inclusiveness in the education sector.

She said that the present administration was willing to partner with critical stakeholders in the Private Education Sector, as a catalyst to take education in the state to the next level.

“Despite the fact that the number of schools in Lagos, especially in the private sector, has increased tremendously, the yawning gap between demand and supply clearly shows that more schools are needed to meet our educational target.

“We need more private schools to come on board for us to be able to cater to the ever-increasing educational needs of a fast-growing metropolis like ours,” the commissioner said.

Adefisayo urged all school owners to reflect excellence in their service delivery, integrate 21st century skills into their teaching methods and to make provision for special students.

She urged school owners to employ only qualified teachers, emphasise digital literacy and adhere to the recommended curriculum for teaching.

The Director, Private Education and Special Programmes, Mrs Adetutu Adebowale, said that there was the need for school owners to maintain the standard that earned them the approval of the state government.

Adebowale said that private school operators could not afford to fail in their complementary role needed to move the sector to greater heights.

Responding on behalf of the private nursery and primary schools, Mrs Chinyelu Anidebe, a school proprietor, urged the ministry to always make the new curriculum available on time.

Anidebe called on the ministry to update the current curriculum and initiate enlightenment programmes aimed at dissuading parents from encouraging their children to skip primary six.

In the same vein, another proprietor, Capt. Femi Olaiya, representing the secondary school subsector, encouraged the ministry to utilise all available media to disseminate information on the criteria for approval to school owners and to also hasten the process.

Politics / Local Govt Pensioners Appeal To Government Over Unpaid Gratuities In Kwara by torin: 6:19pm On Nov 19, 2019
Pensioners in Kwara state have appealed to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to be more proactive on settling accumulated gratuities of both state and local government retired workers.

Speaking during a one-day seminar for local government pensioners in the16 local government areas of the state in Ilorin on Tuesday, the state chairman, Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Alhaji Saidu Oladimeji, said that local government pensioners are being owed gratuities from 2009 till date, while their state counterpart is being owed from 2014 till date.

Alhaji Oladimeji, who said that local government pensioners and primary school teachers were being owed payment of arrears of salaries and pension, added that 20 per cent harmonisation had not been paid to local government pensioners.

The pensioners also enjoined the state government to do away with consultancy services in the payment of local government salaries, saying that the development had compounded their woes.

Also speaking, the state secretary of the union, Comrade Abraham Jonah, lamented that pensioners in the state had not been fairing well over the years, saying that motto of the union, “rest is sweet after labour” had become a mirage.

He, however, assured the pensioners that they would soon experience a deserved good living condition, particularly, with steps being taken by present NUP executives.

Comrade Jonah harped on unity, peace and love among retirees, saying that the union is the only recognised organisation under the laws of the country, as no splinter group would be accorded any recognition by the federal ministry of Labour and Employment.

Politics / Bayelsa: PDP Accuses Army Of Rigging In APC’s Favour by torin: 6:27am On Nov 18, 2019
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday condemned the alleged arrest of prominent members of the party in Bayelsa State by soldiers of 6 Division of the Nigerian Army led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major Gen Jamil Sahram.

Bayelsa State PDP Chairman, Hon Moses Cleopas, accused the GOC of using the men under his command, especially the Commander of the Artillery Brigade, Lt Col Wase, to perpetrate electoral fraud in Bayelsa.

He said that Gen Sarham was spearheading the desperate attempt to rewrite the results of the election to rig it in favour òf the APC.

He said that soldiers under the command of Sarham had commenced indiscriminate of arrest PDP leaders in Ogbia.

Chairman, Hon Ebinyon Turner; two lawmakers, Hon Gibson Munalayefa and Mrs. Naomi Ogoli.

Cleopas lamented that while PDP members were being arrested and taken to unknown destination, the election results for Ogbia were also being rewritten.

The PDP chairman wondered why the Nigerian Army would allow itself to be used as a tool to subvert democracy in the country.

He said that the PDP had already won the election with the original results from the polling units where proper voting took place on Saturday.

He urged the observers to note the brazen acts of impunity by the Army to rig the election and subvert the will of the Bayelsa people.
