@topic. .

Patoraking has been around for some time and has not had that big track yet. I feel this is his biggest song yet and that move to Dem mama records is doing him good.

Yeah its me o . . After my self imposed ban from twitter till December, I retraced my steps back to my roots.

Back to the topic: has to be his biggest song out, I also like the fact that a GOOD video was shot for the song.

Mynd_44: Uncle Tosin is back.

I agree but I don't think it was MI that proved the perception that you can live off rap. Eedris proved that to an extent and Ruggedman put a stamp on it.

Here I am after a long lazy break from writing; this right here is just my opinion about what I feel about Nigerian rap, rappers and how to make fame and fortune from rap.

It’s been a week of hip hop in Nigeria, ever since the release of the top 10 gifted rappers in Nigeria, via the online music platform: Notjustok. For those who didn’t know, I was a part of the team that contributed to the birth of that list, I don’t agree with the final list though.

So if there is a time to talk about Rap music in Nigeria, the time is now.

Just recently I watched an interview on TV, where the legendary lyricist Modenine (All respect to the legend) poured out his mind about haw bad he felt, about putting out a body of work and people ignored. For a moment I felt annoyed also, then later I thought of it, if he directed his annoyance to the core rap fans, then may be. But if it was directed at the music fans in general, then he really misses the point.

That “point” is what this article is about. I mean you can’t sell meat to a vegetarian, you’ve got to give them the vegetables they want, and if you are going to make meat appeal to a vegetarian, you’ve got to mix it up with vegetables.

Rap has really come of age in Nigeria, but there is still a lot to learn and there is still room for improvement. Rap music was really never accepted in Nigeria at a time, it was so bad that rappers couldn’t even make a living off their music.

This perception of not being able to make a living off rap in Nigeria was however proved wrong by M.i Abaga, after he dropped his first album.

Let me state at this juncture, that i am not trying to give a lecture about rap and it’s basics, I’m not a hip hop head, I’m just going to give my opinion about how a Nigerian rapper can make fame and fortune off rap in the Nigerian market.

I will just state some few personal points and proffer possible solutions.

- Rap music is not as accepted as other genres of music in Nigeria

- The ratio of acceptance of rap music compared to other genres is like 1:100 ( Just accept)

- To prove the statement above, visit alaba, talk to the marketers of Nigerian music and ask how many units of rap albums they move. Also to prove the statement above, study the trend of Music shows in Nigeria, and see if rappers get to be called for shows in Nigeria.

- We really do not have Hip Hop concerts in Nigeria where only rap lovers can pay to watch.

- And the bitter truth is that the bulk of the so called rap lovers in Nigeria as at now would rather download rap songs and tweet about it, than buy rap albums.

My second and third points above do not apply to the likes of M.I , and other Nigerian rappers who have done well in understanding the Nigerian music market, and gone a step ahead from spitting bars on bars, to making rap music, emphasis on the MUSIC.

Since the bulk of Nigerian music listeners are not core rap fans, it is a not so wise decision to make rap albums, and get mad when the majority do not buy it. You cannot force stuff down the throats of people.

Some might begin to think that making music for the majority as a rapper means you are not being real and stuff, but really I don’t know how real it can get, if you can make rap music for the majority and still make them have that feel of rap, that they begin to crave for more rap songs.

M.I Abaga came into the game and shot up the chats of the Nigerian rap scene in no time, with 2 albums and 2 mix tapes, he can be regarded as the best and not so many will raise an eye brow. Here are a few things to learn from the rapper. .

- Firstly, talent is key. If you are not talented and brilliant, do not bother going into rap or music at all.

- In a country like Nigeria, it’s not advisable to make an album with content that won’t appeal to the majority. So whenever you want to make straight up rap music, do it for your mix tapes and put it up for downloads. The few rap fans will download and still rate you.

- When making a rap album, do well to spice it up with other genres of music, have collaborations with pop artistes, RnB artistes etc. That way you can cut across to other fans of other genres of music.

- Use good beats, use very catchy beats. A lot of time I listen to some rap songs and the beats do not just appeal to me. The beat of a song alone can make a listener listen to your song.

- Sample all kinds of beats; drop your bars on different types of beats, high-life, afro-beat, raggae etc.

- Make your lines basic but real and meaningful; tell stories about topics that appeal to the typical Nigerian.

These points stated above are pure facts for any rapper who wishes to make it off rap music. A living proof is M.I abaga. This method is a win-win situation; you gain your reputation as dope rapper through your mix-tapes, and also make a name and fortune on the bigger scale through your albums.

Diversify, explore your talent, and channel your rap talent into being a musician, that way you will appeal to a wider audience, and make rap more acceptable. It’s not really reasonable to cage yourself and do rap for the minority, when really you can make music for a bigger market and make more fortune off it. I mean, who says a rapper cannot make a party song?

It’s show business after all, and I believe every artiste is in music not only to make a name, but also to make a living from it, so be wise and get enlightened.

Music/Radio / My Views On The “hold Me Back” Nigerian Version Video By Rick Ross by tosinaded(m): 6:07pm On Sep 19, 2012
It's no more news that Rick Ross was in Nigeria few weeks ago for a show, and after the show he decided to shoot a video for his "Hold Me Back" track off his "God Forgives I Don't" album.

Oh that video dropped yesterday, and Nigerians have aired their views via different social media platforms. Some absolutely love the video, while others see it as a slap on the face of Nigerians for being portrayed in such light to the rest of the world.

For those who feel the song has no message, i will take time out to type the lyrics of the of the song.

[b][Intro]
I see how these niggas playin’
But I could adapt
These niggas won’t hold me back [x8]
These hoes won’t hold me back
These hoes won’t hold me back
These niggas won’t hold me back
These niggas won’t hold me back

[Verse 1]
I look in my fridge, my sh*t lookin’ scarce
I got a few kids, we need some sh*t on the shelf
I get a knock at the door, they say my rent overdue
And while my niggas sell drugs and don’t know what else to do
The only thing on my mind, I’m tryin’ to keep on the lights
I call up my slime, I need a kilo tonight
Everything whipped well, I’m eatin’ steak, no more soup
Then I parked the Capri, I went and bought me a Coupe
Everything takes time, but this sh*t came fast
Niggas standin’ in line, they wanna hold me back
I multiplied my hustle, stimulated my mind
Motivated my niggas and we’ll never divide, no

[Hook]
These niggas won’t hold me back [x4]
These hoes won’t hold me back
These hoes wanna hold me back [x3]
Noooo

[Verse 2]
First I got me a Taurus, then I copped me a Lexus
I took over Florida, my connect out of Texas
Then I start sippin’ purple, got my sh*t screwed
When you feedin’ your circle, watch your shipments improve
Fabricate ’bout your fortune, all my fabric’s imported
Fornicate in my fortress, 40k still my mortgage
24k my toilet, all my taxes reported
All my exes deported, shout-out Texas, New Orleans
All these niggas influenced by a hustler’s endurance
I just me the purest, but I need some insurance
Niggas watch who you f*ckin’ just to hate on your b*tches
Niggas breakin’ the rules, niggas facin’ suspicion

[Hook]

[Verse 3]
Momma workin’ three jobs ’til I told her to quit
How we rose from the sewer, funny now I’m the sh*t
Niggas ain’t gettin’ money, but they got an opinion
Had this tech makin’ racket, serve you like you were tennis
Killers ride for that paycheck, AK okay, check
B*tch nigga let’s play chess, yo b*tch next, no latex
These niggas won’t hold me back, told the feds they sold me set
Whip ‘em right and then come right back
Whip-whip-whip ‘em right and then come right back

[Hook x2]

[Verse 4]
P*ssy Bottom niggas, p*ssy Bottom niggas
They all p*ssy Bottom niggas, p*ssy Bottom niggas
Lookin’ down on these niggas, p*ssy Bottom niggas
Pushin’ my new Ferrari on these p*ssy Bottom niggas
P*ssy hoe, p*ssy hoe
She a p*ssy hoe until she give me p*ssy hoe
P*ssy hoe, p*ssy hoe
P*ssy hoe, she a p*ssy hoe

[/b]
The song is just about the rise from nothing to something, the rise from struggling to flossing, how he was broke and stuff and hustled his way to the top, how people who didn't do nothing for him when he was broke now feel they can hold him back, how he's determined to achieve more even with the hate etc.

For those who feel the Nigerian version of the video is just a way to ridicule them, take time out to watch the Original version of the video and then also the Nigerian version again. Watch both videos below

Hold Me back (Yankee Version)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVO5WhIm4uI

Hold Me Back (Naija Version)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9Xcs-78Xpo

Now that you are done watching both, i am sure we can all agree that both videos have similarities (Both were shot in the slums). Why did he shoot in the slums? that i don't know, but i av my own opinion on why he did shoot the videos in the slum, and it goes thus: for a song that portrays struggle, hustle, poverty and how hard work can take anybody out of it, the best place for someone like Rick Ross to shoot the video is the slums. he was once like the people in the slums, he remembers the struggle, he remembers the hustle, and he remembers the people who he was once like.

The song is a Ghetto song, it's a song about the streets, it's about the common man, it's only logical to shoot such a video in the ghetto, on the streets. I salute the director of the videos also, there is a difference between making a Slum Scene and actually using a real slum, and in this case a real slum was used, which i think it's something that Nigerian video directors need to learn, that's what originality and creativity is about.

For those who have a problem with the quality of the video, i challenge them to show me a better Nigerian ghetto video (Directed by a Nigerian) that's as original, precise, straight to the point as the "Hold Me Back" Nigeria video. To think that the video was short within a short time and came out good is a plus.

How many of our own Nigerians artistes have done songs/video to show the plight of Nigerians who live in poverty? majority of them portray Nigeria in their videos like all is fine and we all live the good life. Some don't even shoot their videos in Nigeria, they go to other African countries to shoot videos, is that what you like? people who don't believe in a country that made them rich and famous. Some make it worse by using White models in their videos, the height of inferiority complex. Its a shame that anybody will feel offended by a foreigner who came over to Nigeria to shoot a video in the slums that we Nigerians have forgotten about.

By the way did y'all see the tribute to Rashidi Yekini? I loved that, R.I.P to the Legend of Nigerian Football.

Now finally to those who just don't like the video because they feel it portrays Nigeria in bad way to the outside world, first of all let me make a point clear to you all, The average, shallow minded, myopic, stupid and dumb non - Nigerians (especially the whites) see Nigeria and Africa as a whole as a jungle of black monkeys who hang on trees and stuff, and there is Nothing anybody can do to change it, because majority will die in their ignorance.

That aside, i have some questions for those who feel insulted by the video being shot in the slums. Are the visuals of the video that of Nigeria or not? Is Nigeria a developed country? What does the average Nigerian worth? How much does the average Nigerian spend in a day? Is Nigeria a paradise for majority of Nigerians? Those people in the slums, are they lesser Nigerians than you are? Are you really offended because u feel bad for them or because of your own ego? Do you care about those particular set of people? Why do you have a problem with the whole world seeing how majority of Nigerians live? . . Answer those questions in your minds, they are rhetorical.

A country blessed with so much natural resources, and yet so much poverty and suffering by the majority of it's people, a country that cannot boast of steady power supply, good health care, good roads, good water supply, good education and several other basic infrastructure that every Nigerian deserves, why will you as a Nigerian want to help the looting and corrupt leaders of Nigeria hide the fact that majority of we Nigerians live in abject poverty and penury in the midst of plenty?

And it's funny and ridiculous that you think you can hide the fact that majority of Nigerians live in poverty because of corrupt leaders, i mean these leaders steal public funds and store in the hands of these same people we are trying to hide from. The world is not blind, they can see, they know how we live in, they know that majority live in poverty, you can't hide that fact.

The fact that you are privileged and have access to more money and luxury does not change the fact that majority of Nigerians are poor and live below a dollar everyday. I find it very inhuman to feel offended that Nigerians like you and i are in a video, but because they live in the slums, you are bothered about how the outside world will feel about us in general. The outside world will only talk, they don't care about you and i, they won't solve our problems, it is You and I that will solve our own problems and get ourselves out of the abject poverty that we have been subjected to as Nigerians by our thieving and corrupt politicians.

Do you know the joy and happiness those people in the slums felt? Do you know what is means to be rejected by the govt of your own country, and left to live in permanent misery and poverty? Only to be remembered by a foreigner, who went ahead to shoot a video so that the we all can see their plight. Y'all should be ashamed of yourselves, for feeling offended over the joy of Nigerians who got remembered for once in a very long while.

The Govt have forgotten these people, left to die in the slums, now you are also going to betray and deny them, because you have more money? Shame on YOU!!!

What have you done to help out? have you touched the lives of Nigerians who live in poverty? what have you contributed? Nothing, absolutely Nothing!

Nigeria go better . . .

I understand your point you see Nigerians have really made a name for themselves - negatively even we Nigerians trust foreigners more than we trust ourselves but for a muslim man to do this I think it is highly commendable many so called church going christians will do the exact opposite some will even shout "thank God" and even pay tithe with part of the money. So where did you eventually serve, Maiduguri or did you redeploy from the state?

NYSC / Not All Nigerians Are Bad: My NYSC Experience by tosinaded(m): 11:07am On Apr 04, 2012
Ok where do i start . . .

There is a general perception about we Nigerians, about how dubious we are when it comes to material things, most especially money. It is a general saying that the average Nigerian man is a crook and will do anything for money.

This bad generalization about the typical Nigerian has gotten worse over the years, both home and abroad.

We all know that some Nigerians are crooks and could be really dubious, but we also know that there are in deed very good and honest Nigerians all over the world!

This story is really fun, my NYSC experience . . My posting etc etc. The koko of the story is to show that indeed, we have good Nigerians and most especially, Good hausa People!!!!

My Encounter . .

Finished my BSc in Computer Science in 2008 from the University of Lagos. As usual, every graduate feels joy and excitement after graduation, but somehow there is always this bitter taste of NYSC somewhere to spoil the fun. Mine was no exception . .

When NYSC postings came out, i was posted to Borno state . . yes BOKO HARAM state . I immediately got a map, and located the state on it . . I was speechless for over 30 minutes, my eyes turned red and it was as if the world came to an end!!!!

Anyways, i went to Borno state . . had fun in camp and then another posting was around the corner again. All the while i was in camp, i was meant to call a particular woman who was meant to help me get posted to the capital: Maiduguri, but somehow i over enjoyed my self and had fun in camp, and i forgot to call her. BEHOLD, I GOT POSTED TO MONGONU!!!

Mongonu is actually about 4 hours drive from Maiduguri (inside the same state o, imagine that). I got my posting letter, i was posted to “school of fishery, mongonu” . . it was then i called the woman i was to call, then she told me i had to go to where i was posted and get a rejection letter. . .

THIS IS WHERE THE STORY BEGINS . . .

Slept over at a hotel till the next morning, went to the park and boarded a bus to Mongonu . . The journey was just pathetic! long, dusty and dry . . Nothing to view all through the 4 hours, except deserts, empty local govt buildings at intervals, and Cows (i saw plenty of them). .

Before getting to Mongonu, the bus stopped at Kukawa and i saw people coming down, so i came down also . . and the bus left. It was until i asked a corper i spotted about where i was going, before i knew i got down at the wrong place! Mongonu was still one hour away! i almost cried . . I then asked him where to get another bus, he told me i had to wait till 2pm. By then it was still 11am in the morning and i was getting tensed!

i chilled till 2pm and boarded a bus going to Moongonu . . i got to the park (i heard one hausa dude singing Gongo aso, i was shocked!). Took a cab to School of fishery and located who was in charge of NYSC. The moment the guy so me, he could tell i wasnt coming there to accept the posting, so he said “do u want to accept or decline, i av both letters here for you” . . i was so happy and replied him “pls i want to deline”. he said no problem, and even bought me food and a drink.

After everything at the school, it was already around 4 pm in the after noon, and i didnt want to sleep at Mongonu (Maiduguri was 4 hrs away). I got back to the park, and i had to wait for about one hour before i finally told the driver that he shouldnt worry that i was gonna pay for every space in the Peugeot Station wagon. We left around 5:20pm.

it was after the journey started that i noticed that the car had issues with it’s light and stuff . . it was getting dark, so the driver parked, opened the bonnet and hit the head lamps before they came on. by then i was getting worried and shit . . on our way, the light went off twice and we both couldn’t see shit! The second time was so scary, when he managed to park, we were on the other side of the road and a trailer was facing us!!!!!!!!

I almost peed on myself, i had to come down from the vehicle to urinate and throw up!!!!!! yes i was that scared.

Finally we got to Maiduguri and our unsafe journey had ended, i got down and that was it. I took an achaba (hausa name for okada) to the hotel, and behold it was then i remembered: “MY WAIST BAG WAS GONE” . . Ok lemme brief u guys what a waist bag is, almost every corper has a waist bag on camp where u put all ur essentials and stuff. . Mine had everything except my fone! My money, my ATM, My cheque book, id card etc etc . . . Unknown to me, when i got down to pee i unstrapped the waist bag and forgot to strap it back when i got back into the car!!!

I couldnt speak hausa, and the achaba guy kept saying “ba turenchi” meaning i dnt understand english. i had to beg for money from a fellow corper i saw drinking at the bar to pay the achaba guy!

By then my mum started calling me, how she knew i was in trouble, i dnt understand . . I picked up and told her i was fine and nothing was wrong. . I then called the Woman who was to help me get posted, narrated my story and all. she promised to send a guy who could speak both english and hausa. That night was one of my worst nights ever, i dream’t all kinds of dreams, i dream’t that the bag was under the bed, i woke up and actually checked. . lol

That night i actually prayed to God after a long while, i so prayed till i was speaking in tongues . . whether the tongues were real or fake, only God knows. . lol

The following morning was the D – day! the search for my waist bag. The guy came over, asked me for the plate number of the car, i didnt know . . the color of the car, i didnt know, he asked me how the driver looked, and i still didnt know! then he said “only if God wants u to find that bag, thats the only way u will” .

We got to the park, and the guy whose name by the way is Tunde, started asking some of the drivers questions in hausa. we were at the park for up to 3hours, and without even understanding what the drivers were saying, i could tell from the expression on Tunde’s face that; my bag was as good as gone!!!

I mean i had no clue about the car, the driver, etc . . it was impossible for anybody to help us.

Just when we were about to give up and leave, this man approached us and spoke in hausa to Tunde and said “follow me”
we did, and he led us to his car, opened the door and brought out the bag! I WAS SHOCKED TO MY BONES!!!!!!!!!!!
i was more shocked when i opened it and met the money intact to the last. . . everything was inside, except my ID card which was in his hand. .

Apparently the man had been on a search for me with my ID card, all through the day till he saw me at the park with Tunde . . He said he couldn’t sleep at night because he was in custody of someone’s money and property, and that if he didn’t find me and return it that Allah will be angry with him!

I WAS SO MOVED AND SURPRISED AT THE SAME TIME, AND SAID TO MYSELF “WE NEED MORE OF THIS KIND OF PEOPLE IN THE SOCIETY”

That’s my story, hope you enjoyed it and hope we can all learn from it also. lets all be like the Good Hausa man, lets all be good Nigerians and someday our country will be good for it. . . A BETTER NIGERIA STARTS WITH YOU, what are u doing about it?
