uchwar1: Op, this article is not just necessary OK. I am both a Hnd and B. Eng holder but i am something today because of my Hnd cert. Nigeria is not just a place where this kinda topic should be discussed. This a country where someone will reject Engineering course in Poly to go for Fishery in university just because of the nature of our country. I am not saying Fishery isn't a nice course but how employable are they? I remember sometime in 2010 wen I went for Road Safety apttd test, all agriculture related courses were asked to leave the premises of the complex because they were not needed. I believe we Nigerian are the cause of our problems. Thank u bwahahahahahhaha roflwkmd lmao @ the emboldened.. Bro, you made me laf real hard |

Since we can't stop gender discrimination though we will get there we will sit back and enjoy the popularity of being female... Proudly female. Sighs @ the emboldened |

mrphysics: Nice one sir.
During the last convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, a convocation debate was organised with the topic: UNIVERSITY EDUCATION SHOULD BE RESEARCH ORIENTED THAN SKILL BASED. After every argument, it was justified with reasons that University education should be research oriented.
Mr tosyne2much, What actually is practical is not skills, it is research. if you tell me that poly does more research (practical ) than university, sir I will disagree with you.
I have been privileged to teach these polytechnic students, sir, all they do is buy handouts and pass.
Understanding what is been taught isn't they. In my school, UNN (Physics and Astronomy ), We do not say that your name is tosyne2much, rather we know, with reasons it is so. that is comprehension. [i] Brother, the polytechnic was set up to enhance skill and expertise. Well, since you argued that university students are practically oriented than polytechnic students, I rest my case in order not to prolong this argument |

poundsboy: @op I got into polytechnic because I couldn't get admission into a university of my choice. I got one of the highest jamb and post jamb scores, had my W.A.S.S.C.E with distinctions and nothing like D. My result was too excellent YET I couldn't get admission into the university of my choice because school Na MAN-KNOW-MAN. I vowed not to write jamb again and along the line, I got admission into polytechnic and I vowed to remain there. Got into poly, met people with same good result and were quite young as I was then (I'm a graduate now and doing better than a lot of uni guys ). Reasons for coming Into poly seemed same. So @op you are so wrong when you say people who are unintelligent opt for polytechnics. That was before before not nowadays o. And I'm telling you, people who got admission into that uni were people who had Cs and D's (D's and even Fs in maths and English) Forget that thing jare, Nigerian universities are operating on PAST GLORY You nailed it my brother.. May God increase you in wisdom |

Skills10: God bless you for this post of yours.
Silly Article.
Which University did Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, John Obi Mikel, David Becham, Jay Jay Okocha attend?
These guys are miles ahead of the OP in every sphere of life. I Studied Electrical Engineering from Yabatech and I never regretted going there.
After spending the 5 years in Uni, you get a 100K per month job and some Poly graduates in Telecoms/IT earn over 800K per month cause of their expertise.
Omotola Jalade graduated from Yabatech.
Whether it is a Poly or Uni it doesn't define you.
A myopic reasoning indeed.
We all have our relevance in the society. Bwaahahahahahahaha roflwkmd @ the emboldened |

mrphysics: I actually do not understand this issue of practicals and theories.
The Certificate under consideration is not comparable, and as such need no argument. No sane university graduate will have time to argue this rubbish, you will always see the HND graduate coming to prove themselves which doesn't make them equal to degree.
I don't have time and as such let me read and laugh at HND students. The truth remains that degree is better than HND. HND students does no practical than degree students. Not at all. I have friends in HND and I can tell you that degree is far better than HND.
When I was in second year, I went to two polytechnics(names withheld) to educate them and I was shocked that ND II and HND I students could not say the reasons why what they believe is valid.
All I see are students who go to assemble things and say they do practicals. I'm inclined to agree with you that these two certificates are incomparable. This is because they were established to serve different purposes.
While universities specifically focus on theories, polytechnics on the other hand specifically focus more on practicals. If you may ask me, these two should be dependent on each other to maximize productivity just that the nonchallant attitude of the act of parliament that set up polytechnic education to properly fund our polytechnics and upgrade the syllabus in such a way that it will achieve the purpose for which it was created has been causing discrepancy |

mjbaba: I am a polytechnic graduate. Distinction (first class). Kaduna Polytechnic.
This is my submission: OP is very very right. We have to be honest to ourselves. I served in a polytechnic(Ramat Polytechnic Maiduguri) as a graduate assistant. In my interaction with students, i was shocked to my marrows when I found that some of them could not read! Yes. You heard me right. How on earth did they get admitted I had to resort to something unusual. I would only mark your assignment scripts if you read what you have written, to me. It was crazy.
I have been fortunate to get very good jobs. Rose to branch management level in less than 4 years of a banking career that eventually lasted about 7 years during which I worked at three very solid Nigerian banks. I presently own my own firm where I employ both polytechnic and university graduates.
Truth is, I will never recommend polytechnic to even my worst enemy. Some graduates like myself and a few others that I know; can stand their ground against any university graduate from anywhere in the world. But I come across polytechnic graduates everyday and most of them make me ashamed to say I graduated from a similar institution. What is even more disheartening is the discrimination and frustration in the labour market. I graduated over a decade ago alongside 200 others. I'm not exegerating, I can hardly count 20 of us who got what can be said to be good jobs. It's mostly contract here, casual there. Who wants to waste 5-6 years of his life for that? It's so frustrating.
A good number of Nigerian polytechnics have been so degraded and reduced to glorified secondary schools. You see polytechnic students who claim to be upper credit candidates but who cannot compose a simple error-free text message. It's so sad.
I think it's best govt scraps the whole polytechnic thing. The frustration out there is just not it The emboldened also disgusts and gets me worried when I see polytechnic graduates who can't write coherently in English.
Well, in as much as some polytechnic students can't stand their ground, some university students on the other also can't stand their stand their ground.. Just that people tend to fault polytechnic students unjustly |

In as much as I wouldn't deny the fact that polytechnics students are considered half-baked and are unjustly discriminated. All I can say is that only a person who lacks focus will be swayed by the discriminatory comments levied against polytechnic students. However, being focused and determined to be successful is a thing of the mind which is not subject to Bsc nor HND
As for me, circumstances led me to attend a polytechnic and I'm of the believe that it's not an excuse for not attaining greatness in life. I'm not a failure who would justify my inability to do exploits on Bsc. Certificate is just a stepping stone that creates opportunity. It's not that someone's destiny is tied to Bsc or HND... So because of this thread, I should tear both my ND and my intending HND certificate and opt for Bsc ryt? U must be kidding
What matters most is personal development/expertise and I have developed myself in such a way that most of my friends with Bscs as well as people I meet on a daily basis find it extremely difficult to match up with my horizon especially when we get to do things together (I'm not bragging, it's just the pure truth). So whether you give 1000 reasons as to why university students are better than polytechnic students, for all I care because I know I'm determined and I'm going places
Hardwork is the key to success.. You can't be lazy and unproductive thinking that your Bsc will do the magic. On the other hand, you can't be unproductive and lazy thinking that your HND will do the magic. I don't get worked up over things like this. Some illiterates are even living in luxury, why? because they were able to get their priorites right
The more we stop placing so much emphasis on certificate, the greater our chances of achieving greatness in a country where poverty/joblessness is on the increase. |

SoNature: After studying Chemical Engineering in a state polytechnic in Enugu, my eldest sister swore that nobody would ever attend a polytechnic in my family again because of what she SAW. And that was exactly what happened.
This summarises this article I still don't understand the morale of your smiley... Life is a privilege, everybody is not destined to attend a university, the same way everybody is not destined to be rich
Always try to appreciate the effort of people even though what they are doing does not interest you... I just hope you people start viewing life in a good dimension |
