xreal: No economy can do well without stable electricity. Just imagine the cost of fuel to power all Shoprite outlets nationwide.
Majority of entrepreneurs are merely surviving in Nigeria.
That's why crime thrives and is been hailed in Nigeria. Do the crime through politics or laptop. Exactly - naira is being devalued at a fast rate, there is no stable power, no security, traffic everywhere. People will not face the truth, they will be defending govt for peanuts. |

My key issues are valid while yours are too. I do not need to align with yours. Who needs your alignment? Anyway, it is clear to anyone with eyes that there is a PROBLEM with the way this country is run. Ignore it all you want, it is there. |

Tetehjewels: This is why I said it is a loss to SA and not Nigeria.
The vacuum their exit would create would quickly be replaced with others who understand the Dynamics of running a major shopping outlet and are willing to always make the customer king.
ShopRite lost the plot and good riddance to them You either are avoiding the key issues or clearly do not get it. No point continuing this conversation. |

Tetehjewels: Not true.
It's about cost at the end of the day. ShopRite I'd expensive compared to other smaller malls.
Even if a business depends on imports there is what is known as "small profit, quick turn over" . ShopRite does not understand this language. Small profit, quick turn over how? Is it not when you have a profit you can be turning over quickly? Do you realise the impact of FX on their margins at all? This is not text book economics o. |

Tetehjewels: Which is why this is a loss to SA and a gain to Nigeria.
They remit to SA and all we gain are services.
A local minded business of this nature would make a killing when they leave. Not necessarily. It shows our currency has been seriously devalued. A lot of other businesses as well depend on imports, so this is a problem. |

How come no one is talking about the exchange rate?
If they are having to remit revenues in Naira to ZAR, they are pretty much done for already. That would wipe away any profit margin. |

Tetehjewels: My point was not about insecurity. My point is about accidents which are pretty rampant.
Like I said, I would rather walk to the mini mall around my neighbourhood than drive 5km to ShopRite. That is still a problem IMHO. How can an environment be such that high accident rate is a factor in going to the supermarket?! That's a big red flag and brings up even wider issues. Convenience, yes I get. But accident rate being a consideration within a 5km distance is an issue. |
Business › Re: Shoprite To Leave Nigeria After 15 Years - News24 by tot(f): 10:03am On Aug 03, 2020 |
Tetehjewels: It is competition and not Buhari.
Let me explain in a way I would to kids.
If you have a very large store localized in one spot and I live 5 to 20km from that store, why would I travel that distance to that store and risk my life plus spend my money when I can get the same things from that big store from a much smaller store right around my house?
What ShopRite should have done was to go digital but they were too myopic. Their market was mainly for those around their area of location and that was their doom.
Today we have shopping malls everywhere which in many ways have split up shoprites market and taken it to their areas.
ShopRite gave those businesses the ideas and innovation but they now improved upon it.
Their lack of ingenuity and competition from others killed them not FG I get your point on convenience based on distance but this line above stood out. Why should going to a store be equivalent to risking one's life, if insecurity is that HIGH then there's a huge problem beyond shoprite's exit. There is also the issue of exchange rate if they are having to remit revenues in Naira to ZAR. |

WandaMaximoff: Most African countries don't need aid. Sending them aid is enabling the rot and corruption in those countries.
Look at the billions that are being looted, is it not enough to take this country from third world to developed country?
Rwanda that is being given aid by Netherlands is paying 34million pounds to advertise on Arsenal Jersey. Exactly. Aid that never reaches those that truly need it. |

taiwosamwell: So a Nigerian can't be the best graduating student in a foreign school. I don't get. It's because he's a Northerner, they've wrongly assumed they don't know book, meanwhile those are the people ruling the country (albeit in the opposite direction). |

teemy: https://www.nairaland.com/5904341/rape-reps-propose-death-sentence#90323163
With the deliberation to increase rape punishment, every rape issue I've read about comes with death for the victims. And you honestly think people like this okada rider are aware of such? It's simply a natural instinct to cover up their crime. Secondly, Nigeria is a society where rape victims are still blamed so evil people like this know that in some cases they can turn the story around. |
