Ok, i found out leo first learnt about ife art from the people of oyo katunga (the former capital of old oyo).

He was very impressed by a miniature sculpture he saw at a market there, and when he asked where it was from, the traders told him ife, a town to the south.

So he went to ife, made enquiries, and eventually found the artworks.

No doubt he had assistance getting there, as well as escorts because i dont see how anyone could just waltz in and start digging up valuable artefacts.

Oyo katunga was relocated to new oyo and the site of the original town in niger or kwara state is no doubt under kainji dam right now. Will check that later.

Can we instead look at the threat posed by armed militants returning from libya and the govt's lackadaisical attitude towards disarming or debriefing them.

These people will have ptsd in addition to whatever other attitudes they picked up in libya.

A previous report had listed four zones in libya corresponding to regions in nigeria- edo, igbo, yoruba and hausa.

So why all this shouting of yoruba yoruba.

You are indeed rambling.

I dont see men of other races or nationalities typing endlessly like nigerians do, just because they date other nationalities and races.

Seriously, something is wrong somewhere.

Its your decision how you want to live your life- why this constant search for other people's approval or always letting strangers know how " good" you have it? huh

And yet nigerians' image remains in the gutter.

back to the ife sculptures, i think its quite strange so little information is available about them, even though they give a glimpse into yoruba life of centuries ago.

how did leo frobenius first hear about ife? How and why did he go there?

In 1911 a German ethnographer, Leo Frobenius visited Ile-Ife and discovered some sculptures that the local people dug up to use in religious rituals and then returned to the earth. The statues in bronze and terra cotta were so naturalistic that he did not believe that they were made by Africans. He insisted that he had discovered the remains of the lost Greek city of Atlantis. Study by other archeologists revealed that this art was the work of the Yoruba of Ile-Ife between 1000 to 1399

the sculptures do have a greek feel to them, shown by the attention to detail, the calm expressions and highly naturalized form.

seems to me like the yoruba artists who made them, had seen or been exposed to that type of art previously, and had developed it to astonishing detail.

mauretania maybe? huh

and how did they do all this without a coded writing system and no formal math symbols that we know of? huh

Hundreds of returning Tuaregs alarm Mali, Niger

, Hundreds of armed Tuaregs from Mali and Niger who fought for toppled Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi have started to return to their home nations, security sources said, raising fears of conflict.

"Hundreds of Malian and Nigerian Tuaregs are coming home from the Libyan front. Among them are former Malian and Nigerien rebels, but also Tuaregs of Malian origin who were in the Libyan army," said a security source at Gao in the north of Mali.

The Tuaregs from the army obtained Libyan nationality in the 1990s and mostly fought alongside Kadhafi's other troops. Some of them were integrated into an elite military unit, the same source said.

"Mali has the same problem" as Niger, which borders Libya, the source added.

Officials from Niger on Sunday told AFP that Nigerien mercenaries, mainly Tuaregs, had begun returning to the northern town of Agadez on the edge of the Sahara desert, after Kadhafi's forces were routed by Libyan rebels.

"We need to fear a destabilisation of the whole Sahel with this new development. States like Mali and Niger are not prepared for this situation," said Mamadou Diallo, a teacher at Bamako University in Mali.

"What's going to become of these fighters? They have vehicles, weapons and expertise," he added. "This is dangerous."

Both the neighbouring, largely desert nations have in the past two decades faced serious Tuareg uprisings, which were ended by peace talks between their governments and the rebels, mediated by tribal elders.

The Tuaregs, who have historically roamed over vast tracts of the southern Sahara, seek acknowledgement of their cultural identity and have pressed the governments of the cash-strapped countries to help develop their regions.

Locals have expressed fear of these fighters since they left Libya, warning that their return with Libyan heavy weaponry might benefit Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), which originated in Algeria and operates in several countries.

A community of some 1.5 million people, the Tuaregs have traditionally lived in Niger, Mali, Algeria, Libya and Burkina Faso. The Tuareg rebellions shook Mali and Niger in the 1990s and early 2000s, with a resurgence between 2006 and 2009, which caused tens of thousands of Tuaregs to take refuge in Libya.

i wonder if the nigerian govt knows the returnees are supposed to be housed separately and debriefed/demilitarized for a long period of time before being allowed to mix with the general populace.
