TV/Movies / China’s US$7 Billion Movie Box Office Shakes Up Hollywood by tpia5: 1:11am On Apr 14, 2016
A fast-emerging player is shaking up the multi-billion-dollar global movie industry.

It’s a script to make a producer’s heart soar. In 2010, China’s reported movie box office was US$1.5 billion. Just five years later it topped US$6.7 billion, more than a third of that from the small number of Hollywood movies allowed into the market.

Market pull is now reshaping how movies are made outside China, with some American movies becoming less US-centric. IHS analyst David Hancock told the BBC last year that overseas revenues now dominate decisions to approve high-budget movies, with actors from nations such as China and Australia being cast in major movies to increase their local appeal.

Producers have added extra Chinese actors and scenes to movies like Iron Man 3 in an attempt to increase sales in China. Pacific Rim was released in 2013 and has already spawned a sequel, largely because of its Chinese success – it made more in China than in the US.

DreamWorks Animation took things one step further in January when it released its animated Kung Fu Panda 3 in English and Chinese versions. The film was not merely dubbed into Mandarin but re-done to reflect Chinese dialogue and local body language.

China’s quota system on foreign movies is forcing overseas studios into Chinese co-productions to extract revenue from the burgeoning market. Some things simply don’t translate: talk comedies and movies with political messages may face shrinking budgets due to potential hurdles to success.

What sort of movie would a company make that could be shown with minimal change across major international markets? Movies heavy on action and sound effects but light on complex dialogue, according to economist Timothy Taylor, editor of the famed Journal of Economic Perspectives.

There are also “movies with a number of comic-book characters and aliens, who can appeal across conventional lines of ethnicity,” Taylor wrote in a recent blog post. Those characteristics match most of Hollywood’s most expensive recent releases.

“Global demand is shifting,” he says. “The huge US market will remain important, of course. But more and more, Americans are going to be seeing brands and titles and products where the US market is just one among several – and not necessarily the most important one.”

China set to become the top movie market

China is reportedly closing in on the world’s number one box office market – the US and Canada combined, which reached US$11 billion in 2015. While China’s growth trend is undeniable, questions have been raised over the accuracy of some Chinese figures.

Reuters analyst Robyn Mak wrote in October 2015 that “heavy discounts from cinema chains and online sites may be exaggerating top-line growth”. However, China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television reports that the country installed 8035 new cinema screens in 2015. Even the head of the Motion Picture Association of America now projects that China will be the world’s largest movie market within three years.

imo what the govt can do is plant grass in specific areas which are not in regions of dispute, to make for good relations between grazers and the host community.

The cattle feed on grass and what else? There's some other imported stuff which constitutes cattle fodder besides grass, this will necessitate having ranches or some sort where the cattle will be fed, watered and housed.

The process of choosing grazing sites should be an open one and agreeable to all parties involved.

Diplomacy and mediation skills are necessary.

Politics / Re: New Lagos-Kano Rail Line: Can Someone Educate Me Please? by tpia5: 8:09pm On Apr 13, 2016
asala1:

The rail tracks we have in Nigeria are those built during the colonial era and are narrow gauge tracks which are no longer in use. Most trains in all part of the world uses the standard gauge track and so all trains are produced to fit this standard tracks. Even if Nigeria decides to buy new train, there are no standard track to run them, we can only buy refurbished old abandon trains which run on the tracks we have presently.

To get new and modern trains, Nigeria will have to built the standard gauge track where they will run.

big task.

Family / Re: Is It Right To Abandon Your Pregnant Girl Child?? by tpia5: 8:42pm On Nov 29, 2014
Renylee:
We have all heard of instances or cases where a young girl got pregnant and her father or mother or both of them chased her out to fend for herself.
Recently, a woman recounted her tale of how her mother sent her packing when she got pregnant. She struggled to make ends meet when she was abandoned but now that her son is big, they want to start forming "famz". Right now, she hates her mum.
So, nairalanders, what's ur take on this subject matters cos personally, I believe that abandoning them is not the best. Who or where do u want them to turn to when d people they look up to turn their back on them??

you should read atiku's story on how titi's family disowned her for marrying a northerner.

however, after some year/s, they forgave her and made up.

your example is more difficult no doubt. Where is the child's father?

To think I was on the website of these guys during the week searching for flight for Mrs Jarus on her just-returned trip to Ilorin....and had her to settle for road because the time for departure (7.00am) was too early for a nursing mother coming to Ikeja from Ajah of all places. I pray there are no casualties here..

I have always had my concerns about those small, badly maintained planes used for low-traffic routes in Nigeria (Akure, Ilorin, Yola etc). I boarded one old, rickety aircraft from Lagos to Ilorin few years ago and the sound was like that of Okada.

Romance / Re: Why Do People Hate On Fine Boys And Beautiful Girls?? by tpia5: 3:33pm On Nov 29, 2014
Self esteem is very important.

If you have that, you will not feel the need to hate on people regardless how you yourself look.

people with low self esteem will always look for reasons to hate on others, while people with a healthy, positive self esteem are more tolerant.

Parents, expose your kids or wards to these works, while they're young.
