Cherokees expel descendants of slaves from tribe

One of the nation's largest American Indian tribes has sent letters to about 2,800 descendants of slaves once owned by its members, revoking their citizenship and cutting their medical care, food stipends, low-income homeowners' assistance and other services.

The Cherokee Nation acted this week after its Supreme Court upheld the results of a 2007 special vote to amend the Cherokee constitution and remove the slaves' descendants and other non-Indians from tribal rolls. The 300,000-member tribe is the biggest in Oklahoma, although many of its members live elsewhere.

Olive Anderson, 70, of Kansas City, Mo., called the letter she received "a slap in the face."

"It tears me up to think they can attack my ancestors," Anderson said.

The tribe never owned black slaves, but some individual members did. They were freed after the Civil War, in which the tribe allied with the Confederacy. An 1866 treaty between the tribe and the federal government gave the freedmen and their descendants "all the rights of native Cherokees."

if they can think of expelling people who have been part of them since 1866, let me see what magic you'll perform in your own case.

btw i think the west ought to be developing beyond most of the parastatals that were established ages ago.

people, lets not leave these things to lagos alone.

by now, each major capital in the southwest should have a very modern business district such as what obtains over there [lagos].

with prayer and God, its quite possible.

^Maybe a few dont have superiority complex, but like i said, you're getting the majority mixed with the ghanaian teachers from back then.

The ones of nowadays are just as crooked and mean as nigerians. And they're all buddies anyway.
So, nobody holy pass.

Kajina:
Ghanaians do not have superiority complex,
keep deceiving yourself.

go back and read post # 162 on this thread.

i guess you're confused because you're thinking of the ones who were in nigeria during ghana's economic recession.

@ whoever was saying ghanaians are laidback and low minded.

Its not all of them, so beware of generalization.

Some are as mean and ruthless as any nigerian cultist.

The easy going demeanor is just a front when they want something.
Food › Re: Do Nigerians Enjoy Eating Chicken Wings? by tpia5: 8:22pm On Sep 08, 2011
The problem with chicken wings is they're tasty but dont fill you up.

So you might have to add other things like jollof etc to the menu.

Aside from that, good idea though i'm not sure about the profitability.

^Not sure what your rant is about but i repeat- sim card registration should not be optional, especially in a crime-prone country like nigeria.

If the system being operated now is a pay as you go one, then that needs to stop and they should replace it with a contract based model same as what obtains in other countries.

Pay as you go do not constitute the bulk of cell phone service elsewhere and its actually a very wasteful and expensive type of mobile phone usage.

Sim card registration should not be optional.

I assume we're referring to cell phone sim cards.

Nigeria is the only country i know of where cell phones arent registered to their owners.
