Of the 275 persons that were rescued and handed over to the National Emergency Management Agency by the 23 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army about two weeks ago, 63 children were unaccompanied while six women have been confirmed pregnant. It was learnt that more rescued victims from insurgents in Sambisa Forest were still being expected from the Nigerian Army as the Federal Government, in conjunction with humanitarian experts from the United Nations, were working hard to help reintegrate the women and children with their respective families. NEMA’s Senior Information Officer, Mr. Sani Datti, confirmed to our correspondent on Sunday that the rescued victims were being catered for in various camps by the agency and the UN. He noted that the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Daouda Toure, and NEMA’s Director-General, Mohammed Sani Sidi, assured the rescued women and children of social, psychological and health supports before they reintegrate with their families. The duo made the pledge when they interacted with the Internally Displaced Persons at Malkohi Camp, Yola. Sidi said the agency had engaged tailors to sew at least five sets of clothes for each of the rescued women and children as most of them came with only the clothes they wore. The NEMA DG said a mobile clinic had been deployed for medical screening to identify those who need treatment, while the agency, in collaboration with UN agencies, had mobilised a team of experts in psycho trauma counselling and medical doctors to provide all the necessary medical care to the rescued. He said most of the rescued children were severely malnourished and had eye infections. Toure told the rescued women and children that the world and their families had missed them but the UN agencies would support the Nigerian government in providing their needs to facilitate their reintegration with their communities. He said the UN had directed all its relevant agencies to provide all the needed assistance and support to them. According to NEMA, infant feeding, children’s clothes, diapers and sanitation items were provided to 21 nursing mothers. The 23 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army based in Yola, Adamawa State, handed over 275 women and children rescued from insurgents in Sambisa forest to NEMA for rehabilitation. The Commander, 23 Armoured Brigade, Col. Aba Popoola, was quoted as saying that “on behalf of the Nigerian Army, I want to hand over 275 rescued women and children that we rescued from Sambisa forest to the National Emergency Management Agency for care and welfare.” http://www.punchng.com/news/63-unaccompanied-children-six-pregnant-women-among-those-rescued/ |

David Cameron will be returned for a second term as the UK Prime Minister with an expanded mandate for his Conservative Party. The BBC is projecting that the Conservatives will come within a single vote of being able to govern alone. But even if they come up short, Cameron will have a clear mandate to put together a government with the support of minor parties. The scale of Cameron’s win has come as a shock, particularly for Labour leader Ed Miliband who had hoped to oust the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition. Miliband conceded it had been a “very disappointing and difficult night for the Labour Party”. Labour has relinquished dozens of seats and failed to grab key marginals. It has been all but wiped out by the Scottish National Party in seats north of the English border. The Liberal Democrats suffered even heavier losses and party leader Nick Clegg appeared to indicate he will step down. The Conservatives, on the other hand, have picked up a few seats. A Government in the UK needs 326 votes in the House of Commons to command a majority. In its latest projection, the BBC predicted the Conservatives would win 325 seats, Labour 232, the SNP 56, Liberal Democrats 12, Democratic Unionist Party 8 and UKIP 2. – Stuff.co.nz http://www.rockcitygist.com/david-cameron-wins-uk-election-see-results/ |

While people from the North and Southwest are busy singing the praises of Amaechi calling him a lion who defeated jonathan, those that still love the truth know that Amaechi has no political value both in Rivers State and in the Southsouth, stemming from the fact that he only contributed a meagre 28,000 votes to Buhari's victory while losing a whopping 1.4million votes to GEJ even after 8years in power as a governor. Worst still, he is so much hated by his own people for using their common wealth to sponsor the ambition of a northerner against their son. No matter the federal appointment that will be given to Amaechi, he remains the worst loser as charity as the say begins at home. After frustrating the smooth transition of power to his successor Wike, I'm sure Amaechi does not plan to step into Rivers state for the next 8years. The name Amaechi has become a curse to his people. |
PORT HARCOURT : Failure of governor Chibuike Amaechi to set up a transition committee to interface with the one constituted by the governor elect in Rivers state, Bar Nyesom Wike has been described as an act of impunity. Secretary of the Transition Committee set up by the Governor Elect, Hon Frank Owhor who briefed the media Thursday at the chamber in the office of the Deputy Governor, old Government House, Port Harcourt said the constitution of Transition Committees by the Governor Elect and the outgoing governor had been the practice in the nation’s democracy since 1999. Owhor who said it was unfortunate and hypocritical that governor Amaechi who allehedly refused to set up a Transition committee in his state after his candidate lost the guber election was busy in Abuja as a member of a transition Committee interfacing with the one set up by the federal government to ensure smooth transition of power on May 29 . “In the current democratic dispensation the federal government t led by President Goodluck Jonathan has already set up a transition committee . President-Elect General Mohammadu Buhari has also set up his transition committee which incidentally has governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi CON, as a member. Unfortunately the outgoing government of Rivers state led by governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has refused , failed and neglected to set up its transition commiittee. It is ironic , hypocritical and smacks of double standards that the outgoing governor of Rivers state, Hon Chibuike Amaechi who is a prominent of the transition committee of the President Elect has rejected all.entraties for a peaceful transition in the state..”, he said. Continuing the Transition Committee of the governor elect said all efforts it had made to interface with the state government were rebuffed. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/amaechi-accused-of-refusal-to-set-up-transition-committee/#sthash.44G4xpc0.dpuf |
