PoliticsBandits Kill Zamfara Traditional Ruler, Many Villagers, Set Houses Ablaze by treesun(op): 4:06pm On Dec 29, 2021
Unconfirmed report said the traditional ruler was shot dead and his house set ablaze after refusing to be kidnapped by the bandits.

BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORKDEC 29, 2021
Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed the District Head of Gada in the Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Alhaji Umaru Danbawan Allah.

The gunmen, who stormed the village on Tuesday evening with motorcycles, also killed a yet–to-be-ascertained number of villagers.

Unconfirmed report said the traditional ruler was shot dead and his house set ablaze after refusing to be kidnapped by the bandits.

Deadly attacks have raged across Zamfara state where bandits have thrived.

Farming and herding communities in the state have long been terrorised by gangs who raid villages, stealing cattle and kidnap residents for ransom.

In 2019, the state government entered a peace agreement with the gunmen.

About 15 brand new Hilux vehicles and cash gifts were also given to leaders of different 'repentant' gangs of bandits by the governor in 2020.

But despite all these, communities in the state are still being attacked and residents kidnapped and/or killed.

Katsina, which is President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state, has had a fair share of bandits’ attacks, killings and kidnappings for ransom in the last two years.

“It’s Islamically allowed for one to defend himself against attack. One must rise to defend himself, his family and assets. If you die while trying to defend yourself, you’ll be considered a martyr,” Masari asserted.

The Katsina governor said he was ready to support Katsina people who could make lethal weapons available for use against the marauding bandits.

He stated these at a media parley held in Katsina on Tuesday, People’s Gazette reports.

“We’ll support those who come with the initiative to procure arms because residents need to also complement the efforts of security agencies,” Masari added.

“It’s surprising how a bandit would own a gun while a good man trying to defend himself and his family doesn’t have one.”

He insisted that the country did not have enough policemen and soldiers to protect lives.

“Count it yourself, how many policemen do we have in this country? How many soldiers do we have? Even if we say every policeman should go back to his home state, it’ll still not be enough,” he explained.

“So, if we fold arms and decide to do nothing, we’ll be the ones to suffer most.”

He will quickly sign this without a blink. Idiot of the highest order. If it is to sign the electoral act into law he will be giving flimsy excuses. Buhari would have written his name in gold if he had done that. We would have made significant progress in our electoral processes. Snatching of ballot boxes would have been a thing of the past. Rewriting of results would have ended. The right and popular candidates would have emerged after elections. Politicians would have known that without working, no reelection. Buhari and Malami are the worst thing that has ever happened to us as a country. If he had signed the electoral act, I would have forgiven him of all his atrocities as the worst president Nigeria ever had. My heart bleeds because the future of this country looks so blick.

The National Assembly has transmitted the 2022 Appropriation Bill to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for assent.

The House of Representatives and the Senate passed the Federal Government’s budget on Tuesday and Wednesday last week, respectively, raising the total estimates from the proposed N16.391tn to N17.126tn.

The oil benchmark was raised from the proposed $57 per barrel to $62.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, had said the budget would be transmitted to Buhari by Thursday.

A communication from the Clerk to the National Assembly, Ojo Amos, to the Presidency, a copy of which our correspondent sighted on Tuesday, showed that the budget was transmitted on Friday and received by the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President on Saturday.

The letter of transmission, with Reference Number NASS/CNA/37/Vol.1/35, was addressed to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and titled ‘APPROPRIATION BILL, 2022.’

It read, “In consonance with the Provisions of the Acts Authentication Act Cap. A2, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, I wish, with due respect, to forward to Your Excellency, the authenticated copies of Appropriation Bill, 2022, for your consideration and assent.

“After Your Excellency’s assent, one copy of the signed bill should be retained in your office while the other two are to be returned for our further action, please.

The National Assembly had with the 2020 budget returned the country to a January-December budget cycle.

Buhari had signed 2021 Appropriation Bill into law on January 1, 2021, while it’s life cycle was expected to expire on December 31, 2021 (Friday) but for the recent extension of the lifespan of its capital component three months by the National Assembly.

The President is expected to assent to the money bill by Saturday.

The Headquarters of the Enugu State Broadcasting Service located at the Independence Layout near Agric Bank Junction was on Tuesday morning gutted by fire.

Although the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, the inferno was said to have completely destroyed the newsroom and presenters office.

It was gathered that an HD Cameras and computer laptop of one of the staff was burnt to ashes.

Staff of the station told our correspondent on condition of anonymity that the fire started shortly after the station was opened for the early morning broadcast around 5.30am to 6.00am when a generator was put on.

He said that safe for the timely response of the State Fire Service, the entire station would have been gutted by fire.

Another staff also told our correspondent that they were at loss about the incessant fire incident at the station since policemen were deployed to guard it shortly after the nationwide #EndSARS protest last year.

“Since the station was built in 1983, we have not heard or witnessed fire incident. But less than a month a police detachment was deployed to the station, our store with equipment was gutted by fire. That storehouse had no electricity supply and there was bush around it yet it was gutted by fire. Till today, police were yet to release their investigation report on that incident before this one.

“Shortly after that first incident, the policemen were removed and a new set of people were brought and now it has happened again. I am not saying that those policemen were behind the incident but a thorough investigation should be conducted on this fire incident.”

The General Manager of the station, Chukwuma Ogbonna, who spoke to our correspondent shortly after the fire was put out by firefighters, lamented that the incident was the second fire incident at the station this year.

Although, he said that the current incident could be attributed to power surge, however, the first incident had remained a puzzle.

“I really thank God that the Fire Service came on time and saved the station otherwise I don’t know what could have happened. The firefighters have put out the fire. It didn’t destroy many things, at least we can go on air.”

Lamenting on the previous fire incident, Ogbonna said “that one happened in our store and all the equipment were totally destroyed. Till today the cause of that fire has remained a puzzle because there was no electricity supply to that store.

“After the incident, police interviewed all the staff and their report hasn’t been released. So it has remained a puzzle. But this one that happened today can be attributed to a power surge. I think there was a problem at the control panel that led to the fire incident this morning.”

BusinessNIN: Telecom Consumers Reject January Introduction Of Digital Token by treesun(op): 10:20am On Dec 27, 2021
Telecom consumers under the aegis of the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers have kicked against the plan by the Federal Government to introduce a suite of digital tokens to enhance the verification of the National Identity Number, effective January next year

According to the Federal Government, the digital token consisting 16 alphabets and numbers will be accepted for third-party verification, instead of the 11-digit NIN.

The development has been greeted with mixed reactions from Nigerians.

However, the President, NATS, Adeolu Ogunbanjo, said the move was currently uncalled for, and shouldn’t be implemented without proper consultation with stakeholders.

He said, “Why can’t the FG engage stakeholders before coming up with this plan? It is a serious policy and they didn’t even engage stakeholders. Why can’t we do that?

“Until they discuss with all relevant stakeholders, and we look at the merits and demerits; they can’t impose this on us.”

Ogunbanjo recalled the development was coming barely a year after the Federal Government mandated citizens to link their SIMs to their NINs within a short period, forcing many Nigerians to besiege registration centres.

He said, “I do not know why the FG is always rushing things on its citizens, remember when they were also going to start the SIM-NIN linkage, it was announced in a hurry too.

“Why is this government rushing its citizens without proper enlightenment? Nobody knows what this V-NIN is all about, they are coming up with it this month and they want to implement it next month. They must start educating the citizenry first.

“We are not sure if the Federal Government doesn’t have an agenda with all these things. This is because we now have about five or six different means of national identification.”

BusinessReview Forex Ban On 40 Items To Save Naira, Economists Tell CBN by treesun(op): 8:49am On Dec 27, 2021
The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, an economic think tank, has advised the Central Bank of Nigeria to review its ban on some of the over 40 items which the regulator has stopped importers from accessing foreign exchange to bring into the country.

Economists at the centre also said there was a need for the CBN to review its foreign exchange policy in 2022 with a view to improving dollar liquidity in order to rescue the ailing naira and help industries to grow.

The group disclosed this in its economic and business environment review for 2021 and agenda for 2022, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent on Sunday.

According to the CPPE, there is a need for the CBN to engage stakeholders as its current forex policy regime is negatively affecting investors, manufacturers and other stakeholders.

The CPPE said, “In the bid to reduce the pressure on foreign reserves, the CBN had excluded over 40 items from access to foreign exchange in the official window.

“Some of the products on this list are intermediate products for some manufacturing firms which have negatively impacted some manufacturers. It would be advisable for the CBN to have a robust engagement with the stakeholders to review this list in the New Year.”

According to the organisation, the CBN should adopt a flexible exchange rate policy regime, and allow the pricing mechanisms to reflect the demand and supply fundamentals in the foreign exchange market.

It said, “Our proposition is that we should adopt a flexible exchange rate policy regime. We would like to clarify that this is not a devaluation proposition.

“Rather, it is a pricing mechanism that reflects the demand and supply fundamentals in the foreign exchange market. It is a model that is sustainable, predictable and transparent. It is a policy regime that would reduce uncertainty and inspire the confidence of investors.

“It is a policy framework that would minimise discretion and arbitrage in the foreign exchange allocation mechanism. A flexible exchange rate regime is a policy choice adopted to cope with changing demand and supply conditions in the forex market.”

According to the centre, adopting a market rate would deepen the autonomous foreign exchange market by liberalising inflows from export proceeds, diaspora remittances, multinational companies, donor agencies, diplomatic missions, and others.

It added that a flexible exchange rate would enhance liquidity in the forex market, increase investors’ confidence, and ensure a more transparent model for forex allocation.

Also, the CPPE said the Cash Reserves Requirements imposed on Nigerian banks by the CBN is one of the highest globally, adding that it is a major impediment to financial intermediation by banks.

According to the experts, some of the banks have a CRR of 50 per cent and more against the official CRR of 27.5 per cent.

It said, “Yet, financial intermediation is supposed to be the major function and essence of the banking system. The high CRR has made it difficult for the banks to play their primary role of financial intermediation. Their profitability is also adversely impacted because of limited room for credit creation activities.

“Indeed, the ways and means finances of the apex bank pose greater liquidity risk to the economy than bank deposits. We therefore seek a reduction in CRR so that the banks can be better placed to play their primary role of financial intermediation in the economy.”

The CPPE also said challenges of infrastructure, rising insecurity, climate change, low productivity in agriculture, monetisation of fiscal deficit, and depreciation of the naira were fuelling inflation in the nation.

It said headline inflation was 16.47 per cent in January, and rose to a peak of 18.17 per cent in March, before falling to 15.40 per cent in November.

The organisation said, “Headline inflation has been on the increase on a month-on-month basis from January to date, albeit at a reducing rate.

“Meanwhile, food inflation has been consistently higher than headline inflation and core inflation for most part of the year. Inflationary pressure remains a major cause for worry both for businesses and the households as it remains elevated.”

According to the organisation, the implications of these include, increasing poverty, increasing risk of malnutrition, increasing social tension, and criminality.

It added that businesses had had to deal with weak purchasing power, low sales and low profit margin, low-capacity utilisation, high production and operating cost, and high risk of increased business mortality.

The CPPE said in order to tackle inflation, the nation needed to boost productivity to drive output growth, reduce the depreciation of the naira exchange rate, and improve the flow of foreign exchange.

The CPPE added that the nation needs to, “Minimise the monetisation of fiscal deficit. CBN financing of deficit should be strictly limited to statutory threshold spelt out in the CBN Act.

“Government should seek creative ways of addressing insecurity in order to pave the way for farmers to return to their farms. Address cost of logistics. Address the ease of cargo clearing at the port. Address climate change concerns. Review our trade policy to bring down the cost of some intermediate products for manufacturers.”

PoliticsJonathan Responsible For Rise Of Banditry In Nigeria – Amaechi by treesun(op): 8:34pm On Dec 26, 2021
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that banditry became rampant because of the poverty created by Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Amaechi, speaking on ‘Hard Copy’ a Channels Television programme, claimed the money Jonathan left for Nigeria after he left office in May 2015, was not enough to run the country for three weeks.

The ex-Governor of Rivers State claimed that while he was chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ forum, he was informed by officials of the Presidency that there was virtually no money left in the treasury.

Amaechi said, “When you talk about bandits and all these people that kill, it’s a question about poverty and it did not start in this regime.

Don’t forget oil was sold at $110, $114, $115 a barrel. When this government came into power, oil fell to $28 a barrel and since then it hasn’t gone above $80 per barrel.

“As former chairman of the governors’ forum, I was told by the security in a meeting chaired by the former President including the former minister of finance that at every point in time, the government must leave money behind in case Nigeria goes to war that would last for six months.

“By the time we came, they didn’t leave money behind that could last us for three weeks. And I was speaking at that time as the chairman of the governors’ forum.”

By Temidayo Akinsuyi

LAGOS – The South-West Agenda for Asiwaju 2023 (SWAGA’23) has said Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Lagos State governor, will win the presidential primary of the ruling APC irrespective of the mode of primaries adopted by the party.

Speaking in an interview with DAILY INDEPENDENT, Honourable Bosun Oladele, SWAGA’s National Secretary, said the group during its formation has made provisions for whatever primaries the party will adopt by enlisting the support of former National Assembly members who are statutory delegates in the case of indirect primary and grassroots politicians who can effectively mobilise people in the case of direct primary.

He said “People have been talking about whether direct or indirect primary should be adopted. The idea is that every former member of the National Assembly, be it Senator or Reps are automatic statutory delegates.

“If they say it is indirect primary tomorrow, even if they have gone to another party, wherever they are, they are among the delegates that will vote by rights and by law for all the parties. For example, I am from Oyo state. Every four years, Oyo state will turn out 14 House of Reps members and statutorily, every state has three senators”.

“So, if you look at Oyo state, assuming we are able to get 14 Reps and three senators, that is 17 votes already in the delegates’ election. So, we decided to bring former members of the national assembly together, with the belief that we already have some votes in the kitty in case the indirect primary is adopted.

“With the benefit of hindsight, we also look at the possibility of direct primary where all party members will vote. So, we decided to bring in notable politicians at the grassroots level that have a bond with the people at the grassroots. These include former and serving local government chairmen, house of assembly members, councillors and other party leaders that could mobilise support for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“That was why we had members who were not national assembly members in the group. That was the concept of SWAGA. At the time we were forming SWAGA, we just believed that we should have a political pressure group for advocacy on behalf of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“We started by constituting the Central Working Committee made up of two members per state. When we got to Lagos state, we had to accommodate four members because of the size of the state. Honourable Oye Ojo did a great job in terms of networking. We were all driven by the passion to see what we can do for Asiwaju given the fact that he has done so much for the South-West and the progressive family.”

Why will Nigeria be fostered with another bed ridden President who will be too fragile to carry the burden of the nation. SWAGA should find someone else. APC will even loose, except through massive rigging, which may snowball to another massive protest!
