A third successive 0-0 draw ensured Guinea-Bissau kicked off only their third-ever African Cup of Nations (AFCON) appearance by claiming what could prove to be a precious point. Their two prior AFCON appearances saw them bow out at the group stage, and whilst a win against Egypt would effectively secure their safe passage to the next round, they haven't won any of their six historical AFCON group stage games to date (D3, L4). It’s now been 458 minutes since Guinea-Bissau found the back of the net, so it would appear they will have their work cut out to find that elusive three points, but they can take heart from the fact they netted 11 goals in the four games prior to that run - seeing two of their three game openers in that sequence come inside the opening 20 minutes. Defeat to Tunisia in December ended Egypt’s chances of going unbeaten throughout 2021, and it’s now five internationals without a victory for the ‘Pharaohs’ (90 mins only: D3, L2). The latter of those defeats ensured Egypt also got off to a winless start, faltering to a 1-0 loss against Nigeria - mustering just two shots on target in 90 minutes. Carlos Queiroz’s side have now conceded the opener in four of their last five matches, and the first goal here could be crucial in deciding how this game ends, with Egypt having not won inside 90 minutes from 1-0 down since November 2018. The Egyptians are struggling at the other end too and are now without a goal in their last three matches, despite the reintroduction of Mohamed Salah against Nigeria. Players to watch: Mama Baldé was the last Guinea-Bissau player to score a goal - netting against Sudan in September. Meanwhile, Egypt may look to Mostafa Mohamed who has scored five league goals for Galatasaray this season, and four proved to be his side’s first goal of the game. |

Two-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finalists Gabon opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over tournament debutants Comoros, despite having much less possession than their opponents. They might not be able to get away with that against stronger teams, and as they’ve only won one of their last nine H2Hs against Ghana (D3, L5) this should be a sterner test. However, with just four wins since the start of 2021 (D2, L5), the ‘Panthers’ are not in great form and their win over Comoros was their first AFCON success since January 2015 (D3, L2). With the tournament low on goals so far, another tight affair wouldn’t surprise as each of Gabon’s last nine AFCON matches featured under 2.5 goals. Ghana’s 1-0 defeat in their opener to Morocco saw them lose consecutive internationals (90-minute outcomes) for the first time since 2017, and they must bounce back here to put themselves in knockout qualification contention. To achieve that, they’ll need to stop a worrying trend of being stung by late goals – in three of their last four internationals they conceded after the 70th minute (W1, D1, L2). Surprisingly for a side that’s reached the AFCON final nine times, the ‘Black Stars’ have struggled recently on foreign soil which could prove ominous. In fact, their only win across their last eight matches outside of Ghana came against lowly Zimbabwe (D2, L5). Although with Gabon ranked 89th in the world (Ghana #52), this could be a better outcome. Players to watch: After netting the winner against Comoros, the last four of Aaron Boupendza’s strikes for Gabon were first-half match openers – three before the 30th minute. For Ghana, André Ayew has scored six goals across his last eight games for club and country, the last four arriving within the first 40 minutes. Hot stat: Ghana have collected an average of just 1.1 yellow cards per game across their last ten matches. |

Trumann:Dangote refinery was signed in 2013. Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote unveiled early plans for the refinery in September 2013, when he announced that he had secured about $3.3 billion in financing for the project.[2] At the time, the refinery was estimated to cost about $9 billion, of which $3 billion would be invested by the Dangote Group and the remainder via commercial loans, and begin production in 2016. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dangote_Refinery |

Contributing to the low-scoring trend at this African Cup of Nations (AFCON) so far, Ivory Coast opened their campaign by securing a 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea. The 2015 champions will be looking to get past the group stages for the eighth time in their last nine attempts, but after going winless in their second group game in the last three editions (D2, L1), a continuation of that trend could throw a spanner in the works. The ‘Elephants’ will be looking to stampede through the continent’s showpiece tournament, although their only loss in the last 13 fixtures (W9, D3) resulted in them losing out on qualifying for the upcoming World Cup. A date with Sierra Leone can help the Ivorians forget that heartbreak as they’ve never lost to their West African counterparts in competitive action (W5, D2), keeping a clean sheet on four occasions. Sierra Leone began their tournament by holding defending champions Algeria to a 0-0 draw in a heroic display of heart, with goalkeeper Mohamed Kamara going viral after bursting into tears after receiving his man of the match award. However, it’s still just one win in the last 14 internationals for John Keister’s men (D6, L7), albeit that solitary victory came in AFCON qualifying and secured their place at this tournament. With their matchday one draw being the fifth time in six AFCON group games that the ‘Leone Stars’ have failed to score, finding the net has become Sierra Leone’s Achilles heel. Failing to score in 12 of their last 20 fixtures shows the extent of those troubles, as does scoring only three goals across seven H2Hs. Players to watch: Ivorian dangerman Sébastien Haller has scored his side's opener in ten of his 16 goalscoring outings for club and country this season, while Sierra Leone’s Alhaji Kamara has seen six of his last nine club goals arrive before half-time. Hot stat: Ivory Coast have seen the same half-time/full-time result in nine of their last 11 fixtures. |
Nigerians can now access their Twitter accounts without using Virtual Private Network (VPN) – 222 days after the Federal Government suspended the operations of the social media giant. Though the Nigerian government announced that Twitter operations will be restored at 12.00 am on Thursday, January 13, it did not. Twitter remained inaccessible in Lagos as of 12:30 am when our correspondent visited the microblogging website. However, at 4.05 am, the social media platform was accessible. Announcing its official return, Twitter assured the Nigerian government of its commitment of driving civic participation. It posted, “We are pleased that Twitter has been restored for everyone in Nigeria. Our mission in Nigeria and around the world, is to serve the public conversation. We are deeply committed to Nigeria, where Twitter is used by people for commerce, cultural engagement, and civic participation. “We’re committed to integrating diverse perspectives that make our service better for everyone.” The PUNCH had reported that the Federal Government ended its suspension of Twitter, seven months after banning the social media giant in a dispute over a tweet by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). Nigeria halted Twitter operations in June after the company deleted a comment by Buhari, provoking an international outcry over freedom of expression. The government and Twitter have been in negotiations since over restoring the service based on a set of conditions, including Twitter registering its operations in Nigeria. “The Federal Government of Nigeria directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari… has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12am tonight,” a statement from the country’s information technology development agency said on Wednesday. The ban shocked many in Nigeria, where Twitter had a major role in political discourse, with the hashtags #BringBackOurGirls after Boko Haram kidnapped nearly 300 schoolgirls in 2014, and #EndSARS during anti-police brutality protests in 2020. Earlier, Nigerian officials had also criticised Twitter for deleting Buhari’s comment while accusing the platform of allowing activities that threatened the country’s existence. That was a reference to social media remarks by separatist agitators from the country’s southeast, where a civil war five decades ago killed one million people. Twitter deleted a comment when Buhari had referenced Nigeria’s civil war, in the context of a warning to those responsible for recent unrest in the country’s southeast. After the ban, officials also referenced then Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s support for the #EndSARS protests last year in Nigeria against police brutality. About 40 million people or around 20 percent of Nigeria’s population have a Twitter account, according to AFP, and many use the platform for business. https://punchng.com/twitter-reacts-as-operations-resume-in-nigeria-after-222-days-suspension/ |

The Federal Government exceeded its debt service allocation by N1.15tn for the period between January and November 2021, documents have shown. A copy of the public presentation of the 2022 approved budget by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, showed that the Federal Government allocated N3.32tn for debt servicing in 2021. Further breakdown showed that from the total of N3.33tn, domestic debt was expected to gulp 2.18tn, foreign debt N940.98bn, and sinking fund N200bn. Based on the allocation, the document further showed that the Federal Government hoped to have spent a total of N3.05tn on debt servicing from January to November 2021. Further breakdown showed that it hoped to have spent about N2tn on domestic debt servicing, N862.48bn on foreign debt servicing, and N183.33bn on sinking fund. However, the minister’s presentation document showed that a total of N4.2tn was spent on debt servicing in 11 months, indicating a difference of N1.15tn or 37.9 per cent of the money allocated for debt servicing for the period. Further breakdown showed that the government spent about N2.2tn on domestic debt servicing, N885.01bn on foreign debt servicing, and N600m on sinking fund. Although there was no allocation for interest payment on Ways and Means, which is the government’s borrowing from the Central Bank of Nigeria, it still spent N1.12tn on the payment of interest. This then fuels indication that the payment of interests on Ways and Means was a major contributor to the excess in debt service allocation. The PUNCH had reported that the Federal Government’s excessive borrowing from the CBN through the Means and Ways Advances window could have adverse effects on the apex bank’s monetary policy and subsequently harm domestic prices and exchange rates. https://punchng.com/fg-overshoots-debt-servicing-by-n1-15tn-in-11-months-document/ |
Appearing in their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals as a non-host, and doing so as Group E’s lowest-ranked team, Equatorial Guinea arrive here having recently beaten a higher-ranked Tunisia side 1-0 in FIFA World Cup qualifiers. A current five-game unbeaten run (W3, D2) will now give them hope they can extend their unbeaten record across AFCON group campaign openers (W1, D1). With a playoff spot available for the four best-placed third-ranked teams, ‘National Thunder’ will hope for an early strike, having won the last six matches to see them score the match opener. With five of those games being decided by a single-goal margin (including four 1-0 results), the opening goal could prove critical. Two-time AFCON champions Ivory Coast are looking to rebuild, after experiencing the heartbreak of failing to qualify for this year’s upcoming World Cup. The 'Elephants' should still stamp their authority on proceedings here though, having marched past the group stage in seven of their previous eight AFCON appearances. The Ivorians generally start well in this competition, avoiding defeat in each of their previous 11 openers to an AFCON finals (W6, D5). Each of those wins came via a single-goal margin, while nine of those 11 produced under 2.5 goals. Players to watch: Ibán Salvador has been Equatorial Guinea's last scorer with each of his previous four international goals, including one in the most recent H2H. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast's Wilfried Zaha has seen each of his five goals in national colours come during wins. At club level, he has scored five goals for Crystal Palace this season, each time giving them a 1-0 lead. Hot stat: From group stage to finals, Equatorial Guinea have failed to score before half-time in nine of their last ten AFCON matches. |
