PoliticsNigeria Inflation Rose To 28.20% In November – NBS by treesun(op): 1:15pm On Dec 15, 2023
Nigeria’s annual inflation rose to 28.20% in November from 27.33% in October, the National Bureau of Statistics has said.

According to the statistics office, food and non-alcoholic beverages were the biggest contributors to the rise in inflation.

Recall that inflation in Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, has risen to double-digits since 2016, eroding incomes and savings and worsening a cost-living crisis in the continent’s most populous country.

Meanwhile, the new governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, has adopted an inflation-targeting policy and vowed to phase out the bank’s fiscal intervention programs in a bid to tame inflation.

The CBN on Thursday said the country’s inflation rate and the pressures on the exchange rate will reduce in the coming year.

While the country’s inflation rate jumped to 27.33% in November—the highest in 18 years—Cardoso projects a slump in 2024.

“The outlook for the domestic economy remains positive and is expected to maintain the positive trajectory for 2024,” he told the Joint Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions in Abuja.

“Inflation pressures may persist in the short-term but are expected to decline in 2024. Exchange rate pressures are also expected to reduce significantly with the smooth functioning of the foreign exchange market.”

He also said the country is expecting less oil revenue in the new year owing to several factors.

“Total Trade in the third quarter of 2023, stood at N18.804.68 billion. Exports were valued at N10.346.60 billion while total imports stood at N8.457.68 billion.

“This represents a positive trade balance, which would lead to an increase of the external reserves,” Cardoso told the lawmakers.

PoliticsPower Sector: Planned Restructuring Of TCN Dangerous, Says NLC by treesun(op): 6:37pm On Dec 13, 2023
The Nigeria Labour Congress on Wednesday faulted plans by Federal Government to unbundle power sector through the Ministry of Power under the watch of the minister, Bayo Adelabu and Bureau of Public Enterprises.

The congress, in a statement signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, noted that the proposed power sector reforms were being initiated to prepare the Transmission Company of Nigeria for “total privatisation.”

The PUNCH on Tuesday reported that the Federal Government through the BPE, announced its plans to sell off 40 per cent shares of the government in electricity distribution companies in the capital market in 2024.

Similarly, the government also noted that it was unbundling the TCN in line with the Electricity Act.

Ibadan Family Where Dad, Mum, Two Children Are Vulcanisers | Punch
But, Ajaero, in the statement said the move portends danger to the power sector.

He said, “The proposed plans by the Federal Government to restructure the Transmission Company of Nigeria as stated by the Minister of Power; Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, is laden with other intentions that may be hidden but very clear to every discerning Nigerian.

“It portends great danger to the power sector and holds great fear and trepidation for major stakeholders within the sector. It imperils the ability of the state to control, regulate and guarantee the safety of the nation’s grid system at all times.

“We want to quickly say that the idea behind the so-called plans to restructure is the same big grammar that was spoken before and during the failed privatisation exercise of the sector. They are the same stories that Nigerians have heard over the years which have largely yielded no significant results.

“It is clear that the main motive behind the plans for the proposed restructuring is no other than to prepare the TCN for eventual take over by the cronies and lackeys of the ruling elite. When words like unbundling are bandied about in Nigeria, the masses and workers become frightened because of the level of misery such words have foisted on the people.

“Unbundling heralded the death of the downstream sector of the nation’s petroleum sector, it sounded the death knell on the power sector and raising its ugly specter once again at this time when the people are facing serious socioeconomic challenges may compound the woes of the people.”

Speaking further in the statement, the NLC said it believes that the President is repeating same mistake previous administrations have made with the policy direction, his Minister of power is trying to follow in seeking to unbundle TCN for privatization.

“We had thought that the President would have convened a genuine national stakeholders’ forum to critically review the privatisation exercise in the sector which the government itself agrees has failed to attain any of its major objectives rather than seeking to embark on another exercise that would bring more crisis to the power sector.

“The disaster that will befall the nation’s power sector would be multidimensional. The quest to ultimately handover the Transmission infrastructure would expose the nation to blackmails and weaken the ability of the sector to transmit and distribute power around the country. Privatizing it will create the same crisis prevailing within the DISCOs and GENCOs and will impact the quality-of-service deliverance by the Power sector to Nigerians.

“It has to be remembered that we protested against a nation that was hell bent on committing suicide in the power sector 10 years ago. We talked about the consequences that privatisation exercise was going to be for the power sector and for Nigerians but it was not heeded,” it added.

The NLC noted that the power sector has remained stagnant over the years despite 500 per cent tariff increase.

The statement read, “Today, Nigerians have witnessed 500 per cent tariff increase yet, there is no improvement in services to Nigerians. The power sector remains stagnant as no significant investment was made by those who bought the GENCOs and DISCOs through proxies. What we are reaping today are the unfortunate outcomes of the errors of yesterday and it is obvious that we are bent on going the same route

“As we write, government has paid about N2.8trn in subsidy for a sector it handed over to the private sector. A sector it sold at About N400bn yet, it has spent multiples of that in tax payers funds as pay outs to those who bought the privatized entities.

“Consequently, the sector has been handed over to banks due to the inability of the proxy investors to pay their loans to the banks. The managerial and technical competence as well as Foreign Direct Investment has eluded the power sector as a result of this primitive economic policy. It is this same route that the Government is proposing to follow again.

“The consequences of what the government wants to do especially to at a time when Nigeria is today leading other countries as headquarters of nations suffering from power poverty will worsen the predicament of the nation’s Power sector. Its attendant macro-economic implications for our nations are huge and will worsen the already bad socioeconomic situation in our nation.

“Nigeria’s economy would be worse in the next 10 years if a conscious power policy devoid of undue influence by neoliberal economic apologists is not designed. We need to wean not only our power sector but our entire economy from the apron strings of the forces of capitalism and its philosophical foundations if we are to make real progress as a nation.

“It is important that we learn from the mistakes of the past so that its errors are not repeated and the same consequences befall our nation again. If care is not taken, this may be another hope betrayed.”

PoliticsPetrol Price Should Be N750 Per Litre, Says World Bank by treesun(op): 12:16pm On Dec 13, 2023
The World Bank has stated that the Federal Government may still be paying for fuel subsidy, considering that fuel prices are currently not cost-reflective in the country.

It said the price of petrol should be around N750 per litre more than the N650 per litre currently being paid by Nigerians.

The bank’s Lead Economist for Nigeria, Alex Sienaert, revealed this during his presentation of the Nigeria Development Update, December 2023 edition titled, ‘Turning The Corner (from reforms and renewed hope, to results) on Wednesday in Abuja.

During the event, which is hybrid, he noted that based on the official exchange rate today, fuel should cost N750/litre.

He said, “It does seem like petrol prices are not fully adjusting to market conditions so that hints at the partial return of the subsidy, if we estimate what is the cost reflective of retail PMS price of the would-be and assuming that importation is done at the official FX rate.

“Of course, the liberalisation is happening with the parallel rates, which is the main supplier, the price would be even higher. These are just estimates to give you a sense of what cost-reflective pricing most likely looks like.

“We think the price of petrol should be around N750 per litre more than the N650 per litre currently paid by Nigerians.”

He highlighted that the bank is recommending to the government to take additional measures with its bold reforms to secure the benefits from having taken those decisions.

More details soon…

Nigeria democracy is really funny, same Akeredolu condmned Yardua!
PoliticsTinubu Directs Akeredolu To Transfer Power By E-signature To Deputy As Ailing On by treesun(op): 11:45am On Dec 12, 2023
However, the transfer of power will be done by electronic signature (e-signature) as the ailing governor is too weak to sign any document.

President Bola Tinubu has directed ailing Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State to transfer power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

However, the transfer of power will be done by electronic signature (e-signature) as the ailing governor is too weak to sign any document.

Tinubu reportedly told people at the meeting he had summoned to resolve the leadership crisis in Ondo on Monday that Akeredolu was incapacitated and could not sign a letter anymore.

SaharaReporters reported on Sunday that President Tinubu had summoned the state deputy governor, Aiyedatiwa and House of Assembly Speaker, Olamide Oladiji to Aso Villa in Abuja for an urgent meeting slated for Monday.

Sources had told SaharaReporters that Tinubu would ask that the deputy governor should be allowed to act as governor, to resolve the leadership crisis in the state.

Monday’s emergency meeting was the second one summoned by the President to resolve the leadership crisis in the state following the governor’s absence from office since July 2023.

The meeting at the instance of Tinubu was due to mounting pressure from the civil society organisation Take-It-Back, which had threatened to commence mass protests across Ondo State from Saturday, December 16 to demand Akeredolu’s resignation.

The ailing governor has gone AWOL since returning to Nigeria in September from a three-month medical leave in Germany.

Apart from Aiyedatiwa and Oladiji, Akeredolu’s son, Babajide, who was appointed by the governor in November 2021 as the Director General of the Performance and Project Implementation Monitoring Unit, Office of the Governor of Ondo State (PPIMU), was one of those present at the meeting.

The senator representing Ondo South, Jimoh Ibrahim, was also present.

Sources told SaharaReporters that it was first agreed that the State House of Assembly should invoke the doctrine of necessity to make Aiyedatiwa the acting governor, but some of those present pleaded with President Tinubu that it would humiliate the ailing governor.

“During the meeting, it was agreed that the State House of Assembly should invoke the doctrine of necessity and make Lucky Ayedatiwa the Acting Governor, but the Speaker and Senator Jimoh Ibrahim pleaded that the ailing governor would be humiliated,” one of the sources said.

“The son (Babajide) then promised to go and obtain his father’s e-signature to pen a letter to the State House of Assembly, transferring power to the deputy governor.”

Sources at the meeting also disclosed that someone raised concern that since there was already a case of forgery established in handling the affairs of the state, it would not make sense for power to be transferred through such dubious means.

SaharaReporters on Sunday reported that a pro-democracy organisation, Take-It-Back Movement would organise a town hall meeting in Akure on Saturday, December 16 to call for Governor Akeredolu to resume office or resign.

The event will also mark the commencement of street protests to call for the resignation of the ailing governor who has not set foot in his state since July 2023, the report added.

Omoyele Sowore, the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, on Sunday, also called on Governor Akeredolu to return to office and perform his constitutional duty as governor of the state or resign.

Sowore, in a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle disclosed that there would be a town hall meeting and beginning of street protests in Akure, the state capital and across the state on December 16, to demand Akeredolu's resignation.

He wrote: "There will be a Townhall Meeting & a beginning of Street Protests In Akure and across Ondo state on Saturday December 16th 2023!

"All persons of conscience are invited! #GovAkeredoluMustResign #RevolutionNow."

According to a flyer announcing the event, the town hall meeting organised by the Take-It-Back Movement and themed ‘Akeredolu; Resume Or Resign,’ will be held by noon on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Akure Town Hall on Oba Adeside Road in Akure.

BACKGROUND

Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), won his re-election as the state governor in October 2020 and was sworn in for a second term in office in February 2021.

However, the governor’s second term, since January 2023, has not been smooth sailing as he had to be flown abroad for treatment over a medical condition.

SaharaReporters exclusively reported in January that Akeredolu was suffering from leukemia.

Leukemia is a blood cancer caused by a rise in the number of white blood cells in the body.

Meanwhile, the family have been keeping his health status hush-hush to maintain their grip on the affairs of the state.

The 67-year-old politician returned to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany but has been holed up in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Meanwhile, Akeredolu has been under intense pressure from opposition parties to resign or hand over power to his deputy in line with the 1999 constitution. But his aides have defended his action or inaction, saying he could govern the state from anywhere.

SaharaReporters on Friday exclusively reported that a forensic report by the Association of Forensic Professionals of Nigeria (AFPON) had confirmed that the ailing governor’s signature was forged on an official document.

Meanwhile, there are indications that there may be more of such forgeries.

SaharaReporters got the forensic report on Friday, signed by Mr Nuhu Kutana Tanko, who stated that “there are strong indications the author of known specimen handwritings/signatures on known documents marked ‘K-K4’ did not write the questioned signatures on questioned documents marked ‘Q-Q2.’”

The investigation was initiated by the State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Razaq Obe, who wrote to the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, confirming the forgery of Akeredolu’s signature on an official document relating to his ministry.

In the commissioner’s letter on Friday titled “Forgery Of Mr. Governor's Signature On Official Document” and dated December 7, he wrote, “I write to bring to your attention a critical matter that requires immediate action. It has been confirmed that the signature of Mr. Governor on a certain document has been forged.

“The irregularities in the signature were first observed when a file from my ministry was returned through the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). This is the only file that has been returned so far out of the five files that were sent for Mr. Governor's approval about two months ago.

“Upon closer inspection, I noticed significant differences between the suspicious signature and handwriting and Mr. Governor's known signatures and handwriting in the file. Concerned about the gravity of the situation, I decided to seek a forensic review before disclosing my discovery. I sent the suspicious signature, handwriting samples, and copies of the old regular signatures to forensic experts, who have now confirmed that the suspicious signature and handwriting were indeed forged.

“Despite the inherent risks involved, I have chosen to fulfill the obligations of my office by reporting this alarming development to you as the highest-ranking member of the State Executive Council after Mr. GovernorI firmly believe that this is the course of action our esteemed leader, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, would take in such a situation.

PoliticsSultan Asks Leaders To Fear God, Decries Niger’s Bad Roads by treesun(op): 3:06pm On Dec 11, 2023
The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has asked political leaders to fear God and do what is right for their people, knowing they will give account of their stewardship.

He also decried the bad state of the Suleja-Minna and Minna-Bida roads in Niger State, which he described as a nightmare, while calling on the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to pay attention to the road.

The Sultan spoke on Monday at the opening of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam Central Council Meeting holding at the Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre, Minna, the Niger State capital.

He stated, “We call on our political leaders to fear Allah. They should know that they will be called to account for their stewardship. Therefore, they must do what’s right.

“I would like to use this opportunity to inform the world or inform Nigerians and the government of Nigeria that the Suleja-Minna Road is still crying for attention. And of course, the Minna-Bida Road was a nightmare for us when we went to Bida. Therefore, I call on the Minister of Works to complete the work on Minna-Suleja Road. These roads that people use everyday are a nightmare.

“Almighty Allah would ask you. NNPC has started the Minna-Suleja Road. Why are you not completing it?”

He said JNI could not hold its annual meeting for the last five years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and insecurity, especially in northern Nigeria.

He, however, appreciated the government for doing its best to address the security challenges, adding that the meeting was convened to discuss critical issues affecting Muslims in Nigeria and the country in general.

PoliticsNigeria Not Generating Enough Revenue To Support Devt – IMF by treesun(op): 8:34am On Dec 11, 2023
Nigeria is not earning enough revenue to support its developmental needs, the International Monetary Fund has disclosed.

According to the IMF, the country’s nine per cent revenue to Gross Domestic Product ratio is very low and not enough to support the country’s social safety nets, development spending, and protect its vulnerable households.

The Director of the IMF’s Communications Department, Julie Kozak, revealed this during a press briefing on Thirsday.

Responding to a question on Nigeria at the briefing, she said, “As we mentioned in our Article IV Consultation, which was held in February of 2023, raising revenue from the very current low revenue to GDP ratio of nine per cent is essential to create fiscal space for social and development spending.

Nine per cent of GDP is a very low revenue to GDP ratio, and it is really not high enough to be able to support strong social safety nets, and development spending, to help protect vulnerable households and also to meet Nigeria’s development needs.”

She, however, noted that Nigeria’s 2024 budget hopes to prioritise priority spending, both on the social and development side.

She stated, “The 2024 budget aims to reduce the fiscal deficit while also creating space for these priority spendings, both on the social side and also on the development side.”

Low revenue has become a concerning in Nigeria, with the Federal Government recently moving to improve its revenue to GDP ratio.

During the 2024 budget presentation, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, said, “Revenue generation remains the major fiscal constraint to Nigeria’s fiscal viability. However, government is reviewing current tax and fiscal policies with a view to improving revenue generation.

“The target is to increase the ratio of revenue to GDP from less than 10 percent currently to 18 percent within the current term of this Administration. Efforts will however focus on improving tax administration and collection efficiency.”

At the World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings in Marrakesh, Morocco, in October, the Assistant Director, Fiscal Affairs Department, IMF, Era Dabla-Norris, declared that Nigeria’s revenue-to-GDP ratio is quite low relative to other emerging markets and developing countries.

Further commenting on Nigeria at the press briefing, the Director of the IMF’s Communications Department, Kozak, noted that inflation in the country is very high, crossing the 27 per cent mark in October.

She stated that the IMF expects the CBN to hike rates further at its next MPC meeting.

She declared, “The Central bank, under its new leadership, has started to withdraw excess liquidity that was in the system and contributing to high inflation. The next Monetary Policy Committee meeting should further raise policy interest rate. So, the Central bank is taking action to try to address the high inflation problem.”

However, it remains to be seen whether the CBN will hike its rates considering its governor’s stance on interest rates.

At the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria’s annual dinner held recently in Lagos, Olayemi Cardoso, said, “Our monetary policies will aim to achieve price stability, foster sustainable economic growth, stabilize the exchange rate of the naira, and reduce interest rates to facilitate borrowing and investments in the real sector.”

It might also be until 2024 before the next MPC meeting, with Cardoso, stating, “For the avoidance of doubt, the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 requires that the meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank be held at least four times a year, and the Bank has satisfied this requirement for 2023. Our focus has been on ensuring these meetings are useful and effective.”

In its new outlook, global rating agency, Moody declared that high inflation in Nigeria is raising the risk of social unrest.

It said, “Increasingly high inflation generates spending pressure on the government and raises social risks, while the extent of fiscal relief from the removal of the oil subsidy remains unclear at this stage.”

Not up to One year!
PoliticsAPC Blackmailing Me – Gov Alia by treesun(op): 10:09pm On Dec 10, 2023
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue state has described the recent statement by the three Zonal Vice Chairmen of the party in the state against him as groundless allegations aimed at blackmailing him.

Recall that the Zonal Vice Chairmen of the part in the state had accused the Governor of humiliating the party and alienating its leaders and stakeholders among others.

But reacting in a statement on his verified social media page, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, said “we have read claims made by the Benue APC Zonal Vice Chairmen, and despite our aversion to straightforwardly label these assertions, we find no more fitting euphemisms than to characterize them as an amalgamation of fabrications or groundless allegations directed and aimed at blackmailing the leader of the party in the state, His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.

“One such utter falsehood alleges that 80 percent of appointed caretaker chairmen were not part of the nominees sent to the Governor, suggesting opposition members took preponderance on the list. However, as we eagerly looked forward to seeing the evidence to this watery claim, there was none, giving it away as a mere figment of their imagination.

“Another fallacious claim holds that the widespread party dissatisfaction peaked with the Governor’s caretaker chairman announcement. That claim conveniently overlooks the fact that the Governor as the leader of the party in the state has the prerogative to subject suggested names to scrutiny.

“No sane Governor will accept wholly everything suggested to him hook, line and sinker. Sadly, it appears that the “party” synonymizes suggestions with the Ten Commandments handed to Moses on Mount Sinai written on the two stone tablets.

“The three-man forerunner team further suggests that the Governor favors people outside the APC who allegedly worked against him during electioneering and voting phases. This appears more like petty resentments drawn from psychotic imagination, lacking any substantive basis.

“They also question the legitimacy of a meeting attended by notable party figures and statesmen like Sen. Barnabas Gemade, Sen. Ameh Ebute, Gen. Lawrence Onoja rtd, Navy Comdr Dan Ihinga rtd, Gen. India Garba rtd etc whom they derogatorily tagged “Emergency Stakeholders” and hinted at a conspiratorial motive behind the meeting, insinuating a plot against the party. The irony of branding a seasoned politician in the class of Gemade with such a demeaning tag is truly enlightening.

“According to the three mature dancers of a proverbial drumming from the bush, their suspicion, they claim, was further fueled by the presence of Dr. Chile Igbawua, who is not an APC member. This unsubstantiated claim further exposes a desperate inclination on the part of the fabricators to link Rev. Fr. Alia with the opposition. They have also gone to town with the gleeful rumour that Gov. Alia has concluded plans to dump his party, the APC.

“They buried shame while constructing formal media statements from rumor mills , trivial gossip, and their whimsical imaginations, rather than relying on concrete facts.

“A particularly absurd claim says there is a formation and funding of a committee headed by Gen. Lawrence Onoja and Barr. Emmanuel Jime, supposedly tasked to perforate the Aso Villa and National Secretariat with a mandate to spread falsehoods against the party and the SGF.

“The desperation behind such fabrications raises concerns about the team’s motives. It is worth mentioning here that both party chieftains, specifically targeted as subjects of blackmail by the orchestrators, are people of impeccable reputation. They have diligently served both the party, the state, and the nation in various high-ranking capacities. It beguiles the imagination to fathom how these fabricators conjured the notion of reducing these distinguished party figures into mere errand henchmen for mischievous purposes.

“The narrative takes a shocking turn as the accusers declared the Benue APC’s staunch support for the Governor, insisting there’s no turning back. This claim contradicts the earlier narrative of discontent, further exposing the inconsistency in their fabricated stories.

“Lastly, the ‘party’ claims that the Governor has not made any financial contributions to the party, and they too have not asked him for money aside from the monthly dues, which they claim he has neglected to pay since assuming office. Wow! To cut short this discussion, we demand to speak with the books.

‘It is unfortunate that amidst all this, the spinners of these fabrications might have at least made some sense had they expressed concerns about the governor’s performance or public dissatisfaction with his leadership style, perceiving potential repercussions for the party in future elections. However, what we read was an extensive narrative fixated on the elders and the party and shamelessly laced with falsehood in their desperate quest to discredit and blackmail Rev. Fr. Iormem Alia.

“While we acknowledge the consciousness in uniting Benue State and making it a better place for us and our children, we equally wish to submit that developing Benue State in all sectors is an imperative that sits boldly on the wish list of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

“Governor Alia understands the importance of unity and teamwork in achieving the above. He has been making frantic efforts towards maintaining a cordial working relationship with the leadership of his party.

“His continued funding of party activities, presence and funding of the expanded stakeholders meetings of APC in the state is an eloquent testimony of how he holds the party so dear to his heart.”

At least 750 persons have been killed by bandits, terrorists and other non-state actors, while no less than 45 persons were abducted from various educational institutions in the country in 2023.

According to a report by Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) the year which opened with reports of attacks on unarmed civilians by insurgents and other non-state actors on one hand, and the security forces on another is also ending the same way.

The 2023 human rights report was issued on Friday in Abuja by PLAC’s Executive Director, Clement Nwankwo at an event to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Human Rights Day themed “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All.”

Nwankwo said it was against the backdrop of ravaging insecurity, arbitrariness exhibited by state institutions and deepening levels of poverty that the status of human rights protection in the year 2023 was examined.

He regretted that life in general had remained insecure in most parts of the country, even as soldiers were deployed in virtually all of Nigeria’s 36 States.

The skyrocketing cost of medicines over the last few months is taking a toll on Nigerians. Findings revealed that many people suffering from minor and common ailments and those who require life-long management of their ailments, such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension are increasingly finding it difficult to meet up with the costs of their prescribed and over-the-counter medicines.

Some brands of popular medicines have also become scarce across many pharmacies, health facilities and retail outlets. As a result, patients have to travel long distances to access them and at very high prices, compared to previous prices.

Daily Trust Saturday reports that the situation is dire for some patients with chronic ailments, such as cancer, heart, kidney and liver diseases as some have to resort to partial treatment or abandon it all together.

Nigeria has been described as Africa’s largest drug market with over 70 per cent of medicines used in the country imported from India, China and other countries.

Experts also said over 70 per cent of payment for health care services in Nigeria is done from out-of-pocket expenditure, meaning that people pay most of their health care bills from their little income.

This has made it difficult for many, particularly poor Nigerians to access health care, especially with the skyrocketing cost of medicines.

Reasons for rising cost of drugs

The president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Prof Cyril Usifo, blamed the hike in prices of drugs on the increase in the prices of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).

“One thing is obvious. The things we use to produce medicines, the APIs, are not produced here. It depends on how much we are using to get them. Then, there is no energy to produce these things. You use generators; and you know the price of diesel. If you price all these together, as a businessman, would you sell for less price?

If you produce with one kobo, won’t you sell it for one and half kobo so that you would be able to pay your workforce?

“So the answer is obvious. The roads are not good. Go to Agbara and see that some people would produce the drugs but by the time they are evacuating them to reach people here, the vehicle breaks down because the roads are very bad.

“What I am saying in essence is that whatever is happening is not particular to the pharmaceutical sector. It is very painful because at the end of the day, what is happening is that some pharmacies would buy a drug at N2 and they would not give me the exact price. By the time they sell it to you and go to buy the same drug, it would be N5.

“They don’t even have their capital recovered and they have to spend more. And when you want to buy from them you begin to complain. The same companies that are producing are increasing within three months. A pharmacy told me they increased the price of a particular drug more than three times,” he said.

The chairman of the PSN, Borno State chapter, Umaru Abdulkareem, said another reason for the rising cost of medicines was the exit of multinational pharmaceutical companies like GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) from the country.

He said that as a result, the cost of the medicines they manufactured, like their brand of salbutamol inhaler called Ventolin, which is used by asthma patients, has gone high.

He said the cost of some drugs for asthma patients that was just N4,000 had increased to N12,000.

While saying that the cost of another of their brand called Augmentin tablet that was just N6,000 has risen to N24,000 , he said there was also a rise in anti-malaria drugs.

Forex scarcity impedes pharmaceutical companies

In recent months, many multinational pharmaceutical companies have exited Nigeria, citing unfavourable business environment.

An acute forex shortage sparked by lower oil revenues has affected multinationals operating in the country.

For some, there weren’t enough dollars to import raw materials, while others were unable to repatriate profits to their parent companies due to the FX challenge.
money to replace them.

He lamented that the rising cost of drugs was really affecting those managing the ailment.

He called on the federal government to subsidise diabetes drugs, saying many have died as a result of the inability to afford the drugs.

Speaking on the development, Daniel Edegbe, a pharmacist and the owner of Gina Pharmacy, attributed the development to lack of forex for importers to bring in drugs, rise in dollar exchange rate to naira, pharmaceutical company leaving the country, as well as fuel increase.

“In September, 500 miligram of Glucopage was N1,000 a sachet, but it is now N1,500. A pack of 1,000 miligram of it moved from N4,500 in August to N6,200 in September.

“Everything has gone up, including drugs. All branded drugs are very costly now. Augmentin, which was sold at N700 in August, is now N26,000 and above,” he said.

Way out

The president of the PSN, Usifo called for increased efforts towards local drug production, saying, “What is going on might look strange but we are beginning to see the realities of things ourselves. It may be an opportunity for us. We need to do more local production.”

Also, Edegbe said government should make forex available to importers.

Umaru Abdulkareem, the chairman of the PSN, Borno State chapter, advised people to patronise other brands registered by the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), as well as check the quality of the foods they eat when they cannot find their recommended brands.

He said, “If you cannot buy those expensive ones like the branded Augmentin, there are other brands that are of lower price you can go for. They are also of good quality but just not the GSK brand.

“Government should also look into encouraging local manufacturing of drugs. If drugs are produced in the country, we can try to control and reduce the exorbitant prices.

“I also advise the government to do their best to control the dollar exchange rate.”

He advised Nigerians against patronising quacks or traditionalists for solutions, adding, “If you have an illness, go to the hospital, they would test you and drugs would be prescribed by physicians.”

Obasanjo added that Nigerian youths must have to be positively disruptive, stressing that any leader who does not have the fear of God is a dangerous leader.

Former Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday urged the country’s youths not to accept the situation of the country the way it is but to “make those who need to be made uncomfortable, uncomfortable.”

Obasanjo added that Nigerian youths must have to be positively disruptive, stressing that any leader who does not have the fear of God is a dangerous leader.

The former President who spoke in Abuja on Thursday when he participated in The Bridge Foundation’s Emerging Political Leaders Fellowship programme, urged Nigerian youths to believe in Nigeria and develop love for the country, pointing out that there was no alternative to their country.

He said that “Knowledge is very important, accurate knowledge. You also need the fear of God and proximity to God. When you are a leader and you do not fear God, then you are a dangerous leader.

“Wherever you may choose, leadership is very important and the principles are basically the same. A good leader must have certain characteristics, knowledge is good, but not enough. How diligent are you? What is your level of integrity? What are the values that you cherish?”

According to him, the way forward for Nigeria was for the nation not to lose.

Obasanjo further said, “Let us get it right and in two years we will forget everything. You have to get involved in everything.

“You are the leaders of today, if you don’t take it now, you will never get it. You have to be positively disruptive, don’t accept things the way they are. You need to make those who need to be made uncomfortable, uncomfortable.”

Calling for a national discourse on Nigeria’s democracy, the former President said, “What is Nigeria’s history in democracy? What is Nigeria’s value? What is our culture in democracy? Let us rethink the context and the content of our democracy. Let’s interrogate, let’s ask questions. If you don’t do it, who else will do it?

“Many people don’t believe in Nigeria. Don’t let us deceive ourselves. If you don’t believe in Nigeria, what do you want to talk about? You need to believe in Nigeria. Every country has a history of how they came about. We have to accept that Nigeria is ours; we love it, and we cherish it. We have no alternative.”
