The leadership of the Labour Party has taken a swipe at the administration of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) for leaving the masses with nothing to celebrate on the country’s 62nd Independence Day anniversary. This was contained in a release issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Abayomi Arabambi, in Abuja. LP statement is coming hours after supporters of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, under the aegis of ‘Obidient Movement’ paralysed commercial activities and vehicular traffic around the National Stadium in Surulere, Lekki, and Festac area of Lagos State. Hundreds of the supporters were spotted on Saturday morning flaunting banners and posters of the LP candidate and his vice, Yusuf Baba-Ahmed as they marched across major cities in Lagos. A livid Arabambi said that for a country celebrating its 62 years of nationhood, it was clear that Buhari’s inept and corrupt government has succeeded in placing the country on auction. The calamity and great misfortune of voting APC into Governance of the country gave the APC the opportunity to put the country on auction by its corrupt, inept, terribly inadequate, inefficient and grossly irresponsible governance. Related News Asaba: One-million-man march for Obi disrupts independence celebration We'll mobilise far-reaching support for Obi’s victory - Group Every village benefited from TraderMoni, MarketMoni, N-Power - Buhari According to him, the country has not recorded any major landmark in the last seven years of the APC-led government. The statement read, “The country has absolutely nothing to celebrate on, rather a larger part of the overstressed population are gnashing their teeth as they struggle to exist among various loads of avoidable sufferings. “In practically all and every sector of national governance, the APC has scored zero. Instead, it has been solely records of total failure. In security, zero; education, nought and nothing remarkable recorded in the health sector. It is not necessary to keep naming all because there is just no single sector that hasn’t been recording failure. “Nigerians are high-value shining stars noted and acknowledged across the world in the field of science and technology, innovation, academia, music and have no business with becoming citizens of a failed nation. “LP sincerely advises the Nigerian voting public to use this moment of reality and truth to reflect on the need to send the APC government out of office. Fortunately, this is an election year. All of the current challenges the nation faces are brought on by the inefficiency and corruption of the APC which could have been avoided were the APC Government competent. “In a moment like this, it is the patriotic duty of all responsible citizens in or outside the country to be concerned enough to join the ongoing efforts to save Nigeria through collective and honest cooperation. To remove political cancer called APC must become a joint struggle of all Nigerians to remove the ruling party from power at the 2023 polls.” https://punchng.com/buhari-leaves-nigerians-with-nothing-to-celebrate-lp |

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to prioritise patriotism, unity and peace as they make their choices at the polls in 2023. Jonathan in a goodwill message personally signed by him in Abuja to mark the 2022 independence day, said that the anniversary came at a time the nation was preparing for its general elections. “Fellow Nigerians, our anniversary this year comes at a time our nation is preparing for general elections. “It is a critical moment for us all. The elections provide another opportunity for our citizens to demonstrate our faith in the greatness of our nation. Let us be patriotic in the choices we make,” Jonathan said. He urged Nigerians to prioritise the unity and peace of our country in our campaigns, and through the choices we would make at the polls in 2023. “Ours is a great nation with boundless possibilities. Let us work in unity, live in peace, promote justice, and accommodate each other. “That way, we shall build an inclusive and cohesive society where everyone is happy, safe, and proud of his country.” The former president extended his compliments to Nigerians on the occasion of the nation’s 62nd independence anniversary Jonathan said that the event offered Nigerians a chance to reflect on the experience of nationhood and the prospect of progress and greatness, adding that the people had been steadfast in patriotism in challenging times. “Today, we mark another anniversary of our independence from the grip of colonialism. We reflect on the promises of freedom, hope, peace, and unity that comes with independence. “Sixty-two years into this journey, we have every cause to reflect on the experience of our nationhood, the prospect of our greatness and how to surmount the challenges that limit our progress as a nation. “As a country, we have made significant impacts on the global stage in sports, arts, music, and academia. “Our citizens have asserted themselves as people with strength, courage, and honour in different spheres. “We have remained steadfast in patriotism in challenging times of our nationhood, demonstrated faith in moments of doubt, displayed resilience in times of adversity, and pursued peace when our unity was threatened.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/10/nigeria62-jonathan-sues-for-peace-unity/ |

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) yesterday opposed the Federal Government’s proposal to privatise National Integrated Power Plants (NIPPs). The plants are: Benin Generation Company Ltd, Calabar Generation Company Ltd, Geregu Generation Company Ltd, Olorunsogo Generation Company Ltd and Omotosho Generation Company Ltd. Outgoing NGF Chairman and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, who addressed reports in Abuja on Thursday after the forum’s meeting, said the proposal was opposed because all stakeholders were not carried along in the scheme of things. He said: “We examined the issues relating to the proposed privatisation of the power project and we took a decision that at this point in time, the NGF is opposed to the sale of any of the plants until appropriate steps have been taken that would take into consideration the interest of states that are also equity holders in those plants. “We’ll continue to do whatever we can to ensure the resources of Nigeria stay with the Nigerian people and are not filtered away in a manner we can’t explain.” The NGF also advised the Federal Government against sanctioning the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities. It said the government should rather resolve the contentious issues in the interest of the students and Nigeria. Earlier, President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, commissioned a muliti-billion naira NGF complex at Maitama, Abuja. https://dailytrust.com/govs-reject-fgs-plan-to-privatise-power-plants |

Abuja, NigeriaReuters — Nigeria’s main opposition leader Atiku Abubakar launched his presidential election campaign on Wednesday calling for a sweeping victory to save the country from a “frightening descent” into anarchy. Official election campaigning started on Wednesday, ahead of a February presidential vote to choose a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari, who is serving a final second term. Nigeria’s next leader will inherit a country beset by growing insecurity, separatist agitation, a sluggish economy, double-digit inflation, industrial crude oil theft, and a growing petrol subsidy bill that is draining government finances. Abubakar, 75, and a former vice president between 1999-2007 is running for the third time. He said a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) government would rebuild the economy, improve security and the education sector and run a smaller government. Nigeria's Buhari, in last UN speech, slams 'corrosive impact' of leaders who cling to power “We have a plan to address these issues,” Abubakar said at a ceremony to start his campaign. He did not give details. “Under the watch of the current APC government, our dear country has witnessed a frightening descent into anarchy.” To become president, Abubakar will have to defeat ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Tinubu and the Labour Party’s Peter Obi, his former running mate in 2019. He also has to heal rifts within his PDP party after an influential faction boycotted Wednesday’s event as it pushes for the chairman, Abubakar’s ally, to quit. Abubakar has previously said he would give more power to the 36 states, remove the oil subsidy and privatize the national oil firm and allow the private sector a greater role in the economy. Polls in Nigeria are unreliable, but Tinubu and Abubakar - both septuagenarian political veterans - lead the two biggest political parties that have ruled Nigeria since the return to democratic rule in 1999. The PDP is seeking to return to power after its defeat by Buhari’s APC in 2015. http://edition.cnn.com/2022/09/29/africa/atiku-abubakar-presidential-campaign-intl/index.html |
The dollar hit N735 in the parallel market on Wednesday as political campaign activities began in the country. According to Bureau De Change operators in Lagos and Abuja, dollar price had increased from N718 – N720 to N728-N735 in the last one week. A BDC operator at Amuwo-Odofin in Lagos, Bala Usman, said, “It is N728. I can’t go less than that.” Another operator, Abubakar Jamiu, at Zone 4, Abuja, told the PUNCH, “Dollar don cost, we are selling at N730, no more no less.” But the dollar rate hit N735 by the close of Wednesday. An operator in Lagos Island, Mallam Zakari, said that dollar rate had surged to N735 as at 4:54pm. “Dollar is N735 and I will buy it for N731. Yesterday, we sold N728.” However, at the Importers and Exporters Window, rate still hovered around N430/$. The dollar-naira exchange rate was N431.19 as of Tuesday. Analysyts said the naira had weakened in the parallel market due to increased speculations, falling external reserves, and low foreign exchange inflows. Speaking on major factors responsible for the rate hikes in dollar to naira, the Vice President Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Gabriel Idahosa, said that the immediate cause of dollar rate increment was the new Monetary Policy Rate of the Central Bank of Nigeria. “The immediate cause of the dollar price hike is the increase in the Monetary Policy Rate from 13 per cent to 15.5 per cent announced by the Central Bank. “Lending rates by banks and other financial institutions will rise following the MPR hike. This will lead to further rise in cost of operations by all businesses, aggravating the rising inflation. This has triggered further demand for dollars to avoid more decline in the value of any funds held in naira.” According to Idahosa, the commencement of elections also meant that a lot of funds had started pouring into campaign-related activities. “Beneficiaries of these spending will be converting naira funds received to dollars as fast as possible.” An economist at the University of Uyo, Prof Akpan Ekpo, said the demand for dollar was higher than the supply, especially with the many restrictions by the CBN. “There are two things: One is, demand for dollars is more than supply. So people are going to the black market. And the process for getting dollars from CBN is cumbersome.” “Then there’s not much inflow. We don’t export enough non-oil goods and services, and we depend more on oil and the price has declined in the last few weeks.” Ekpo added that the preparations for the 2023 campaign also caused a ripple effect. “Of course, campaign will soon start, and politicians are hoarding dollars for the campaign. They are buying dollars for the campaign.” Nigeria’s forex reserves stood at $38.5bn on Wednesday, which was a drop by $1.8bn from $40.5bn recorded in January 2022. The PUNCH earlier reported that the President, Association of Bureaux de Change Operators of Nigeria, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, had explained that the situation was caused by several factors, including elections, loss of confidence, and demand/ supply. “It is a market where demand and supply determine the price. Do not forget that election years are associated with foreign exchange volatility, coupled with supply squeeze. External reserves, inflation, cost of inputs, and the Russia-Ukraine war are also key issues,” he said, arguing that there was indeed a loss of confidence. https://punchng.com/dollar-hits-n735-as-political-campaign-begins/ |
