European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Manchester City Vs Manchester United (6 - 3) On 2nd October 2022 by treesun(op): 1:05pm On Sep 28, 2022
MANCHESTER UNITED return for their first Premier League game in a MONTH when they face rivals Manchester City in a huge derby.

United have played twice in the Europa League since - losing to Real Sociedad and beating Sheriff Tiraspol.

But Erik ten Hag's rejuvenated side head into this Manchester derby high in confidence in the league.

United have won their last four Premier League games in a row.

Though champions City have carried on their form from last season, and are yet to taste defeat in the league this term.

Marcus Rashford is set to hand United a huge boost with the in-form forward back in training.

However, Ten Hag and City counterpart Pep Guardiola suffered injury blows in England's 3-3 draw with Germany in the Nations League.

United captain Harry Maguire is set to be sidelined for around two weeks with a thigh injury.

He played on despite the issue to see out the full 90 minutes at Wembley on Monday but was later spotted limping away from the stadium.

While City centre-back John Stones was forced off in the 37th minute with a hamstring injury in the Wembley draw, and is a huge doubt for the weekend.
PoliticsStop Using Money To Divide Christians, Tinubu Warned by treesun(op): 2:11pm On Sep 27, 2022
The ruling All Progressives Congress and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, have been warned not against causing division among Christians with money.

The warning was made in a statement issued by the Northern States Christian Elders Forum, signed by its chairman, Oyinehi Inalegwu, on Tuesday.

“We warn APC to stop using monetary incentives to recruit and cause divisions amongst the Christians, especially in the North,” the statement partly read.

It added, “NOSCEF is concerned that apart from the failure of the desire of the architects of the single faith ticket to cause serious divisions in the forthcoming elections, APC has resorted to clandestine ways of causing division in the body of Christ by recruiting hitherto unknown bodies in the Body of Christ to counter decisions taken by the umbrella body, CAN and its various organs.

The group pointed out that in December 2021, Tinubu met with a group in Abuja and sold the Muslim-Muslim Ticket.

“We warned that every patriotic Presidential aspirant should avoid the same faith ticket to avoid polarisation of the nation further along religious lines.

“Before the Commencement of the primaries, NOSCEF again warned presidential aspirants against the one faith ticket in a Nigeria begging for unity, inclusiveness, fairness, and justice.

“Because there was a long term goal and a purpose to be accomplished, APC went ahead with the single faith venture, with the aim of riding on the wings of divisive religious politics to victory,” the statement said.

The group expressed dismay over the show of shame the ruling party is involved in, following desperate efforts to attract public goodwill and acceptance by engaging strange Christian groups for endorsement purposes.

“We frown at the publicity they use to their advantage, to make public ridicule of Christian bodies, particularly in the North, for the purpose of causing disaffection, just to win the election.

“We all know as Christians, Muslims, and people of other faith, that unity, fairness, justice, and inclusiveness will engender National progress, rather than the war of divisive religious, political game, intended through the instrumentation of same faith ticket.

“Christian and Muslim faithful should disappoint divisive self seeking politicians, who want to capitalize on our religious differences to gain political power,” the statement stressed.

PoliticsINEC Urges Political Parties To Avoid Slanderous Language by treesun(op): 1:58pm On Sep 26, 2022
Ahead of the commencement of political campaigns on Wednesday, the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, has urged registered political parties to be mindful of languages used during their campaigns, especially against their oppositions.

This is as he advised the parties to critically study the provisions of the Constitution, the Electoral Act, the Police Act and the Public Order Act for the proper and peaceful conduct of political campaigns, rallies and processions.

Yakubu stated this on Monday in his remarks at a two-day Capacity Building Workshop for INEC Press Corps on Critical issues in the Electoral Act, 2022 and the Commission’s Processes, Innovations, and Preparations for the 2023 General Elections.

INEC in line with the guideline for the 2023 general elections is expected to lift the ban on political campaigns on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
“State apparatus including the media shall not be employed to the advantage or disadvantage of any political party or candidate at any election. In other words, equal coverage and visibility shall be allotted to all political parties by all public print and electronic media organisations. The same applies in equal measure to private-owned media organizations subject to payment of appropriate fees.

“The INEC Press Corps is an indispensable partner in the electoral process and they provide a veritable platform and pathway for the dissemination of electoral information to the Nigerian public.”

Speaking at the event, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Lagos State, Olusegun Agbaje, advised the media to shun corruption and avoid any form of smudge in order to report free and fair elections.

Agbaje noted that the press must ensure that the three parties (voters, politicians and INEC) play their respective roles in providing violence-free elections.

He said, “Within the context of elections for the purpose of this workshop, three parties are to be identified: the electorates (voters), the contestants (politicians) and the umpire (INEC), situating the roles of media professionals to ensure that the three parties in an election play their respective roles in a manner that will guarantee credible, transparent, free, fair and violence-free elections.

“It, therefore, follows that for a watchdog to be effective in its duty; it must clean itself, shun corruption and avoid any form of smear and smudge. This probably the first role the media must play to guarantee Nigerians free and fair elections in 2023 general election.”

Nigeria’s electricity national grid has collapsed again, the 6th time this year.

The last national system collapse was recorded on the 13th of June 2022.

Checks by Vanguard on National System Operator’s data showed that as at 12 noon today no power generation plant was on the grid.

Further checks showed that as at 10am, 19 plants were generating a combined 3,302 Megawatts with Shiroro Hydro at 573MW.

In a notice to its customers, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC, EEDC, informed its “esteemed customers of a system collapse which occurred at 10:51am today, 26th September, 2022. This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the network.

“Due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide service to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States.

“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo”, the statement by Emeka Ezeh, Head, Corporate Communications, stated.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, which manages the grid was yet to advance reasons for the latest collapse as at the time of filing in this report.

PoliticsMuslim/muslim Ticket, End Of Road For APC – Ohuabunwa by treesun(op): 9:12am On Sep 26, 2022
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa has said that “Rugalisation  of Abia North”, and the Muslim-Muslim ticket by the All Progressive Congress, had made the ruling party a no option for Abia North in the 2023 elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate who stated this Sunday, while addressing PDP stakeholders from Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency at  Isuikwuato, decried the menacing activities of Kidnappers for ransom in Abia North, and accused the APC-led Federal Government of docility.

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa who represented Abia North at the eight senate said  that the APC had been roundly rejected in Abia North ahead of the 2023 polls for many reasons especially “insecurity and non-performance.”

The former Leader, ECOWAS Parliament expressed disappointment that APC members representing the zone at the National Assembly had been “unconcerned”  over the plights of their constituents despite being principal members of the Parliament.

He challenged them to make public their efforts to end the worrisome insecurity in Abia North and protect the zone.

He also decried the deplorable condition of federal roads in the zone, regretting that the Ohafia-Arochukwu road which he fought so hard to ensure it was captured in the 2019 budget had been completely abandoned after his exist.

Ohuabunwa wondered ” what stories APC candidates will be telling Abia North who they abandoned to their fate in the hands of Kidnappers”.

According to him, it is political suicide to sacrifice the security of ones constituents on the altar of political correctness.

He further said that those who claimed to have brought ‘Ruga’ to Abia North, had “suddenly gone underground now that the misery of their ‘Ruga’ is about consuming the once-peaceful zone.”

Continuing he said, ” Instead of making efforts to quench the fire they ignited, they are busy pursuing shadow,  promoting Muslim-Muslim ticket, and voting against electronic transfer of election results”.

The PDP senatorial candidate urged the stakeholders to mobilise their wards “against those who have used their position to do nothing while Abia North is in pains”.

Senator Ohuabunwa who predicted that  PDP would sweep the 2023 polls in Abia North and the entire state, assured that the dignity of the zone would be restored under PDP.

Ohuabunwa who canvassed support for all PDP candidates from the presidential flag bearer to the House of Assembly candidate, urged the stakeholders to ensure they deliver their respective booths at the forthcoming elections.

He recalled some of his achievements while at the red chamber, and regretted that since the “2019 mistake” when he left the Senate, “Abia North has gone voiceless and become a comic relief”.

The former Leader, House of Representatives, identified some of his celebrated Bills and achievements during the 8th Senate : sponsoring a Bill on National Disease Control, NCDC that gave Nigeria the platform to fight COVID 19, Ebola etc;  sponsoring a legislation on National Assembly Service Commission; a Bill on Agricultural farmers credit loans scheme which has benefited many people; among others.

In a remark, former Military Administrator, Cross River State, Navy Captain Chris Osondu (retd.), expressed delight at the rising popularity of PDP in the zone.

He urged members to remain united and continue to work hard to reclaim Abia North which he described as PDP stronghold in 2023.

Similarly, former State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Ndidi Okereke, expressed optimism that the party would sweep the forthcoming elections in the zone.

Other speakers including the PDP candidate for Isuikwuato/ Umunneochi federal constituency, Loveth Ofoegbu, Hon. Monday Ajaegbo, among others,  appreciated  Senator Ohuuabunwa and called for total inclusiveness of members for total victory for the PDP in 2023.

Deputy National Legal Adviser of PDP, Okechukwu Osuoha, who was present at the meeting urged members to remain resolute in their support for all PDP candidates, assuring that things would change for better under the watch of PDP.

Chairmen of Isuikwuato LGA, Hon. Chima Agbaeze; and his Umunneochi counterpart, Ifeanyi Madu, restated their commitment to mobilise voters in their respective councils to deliver the PDP.

The stakeholders’ meeting was massively attended by who-is-who in PDP from the constituency.

socialmediaman:
This post is a reference to a suspicious story which appear to have originated from the Business Day and TheNation newspapers, and posted here on nairaland, that the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) had predicted Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 election.

In recent times, such stories have made it to the frontpage, but they turned out to be false.
https://www.nairaland.com/7347733/economist-intelligence-unit-predicts-tinubus
https://www.nairaland.com/7347971/eu-predict-tinubu-win-nigeria

I did a quick Investigation of this alleged prediction from the EIU which has been reported on some Nigerian news websites including the Cable.ng, The Nation, Legit.ng and Business Day from which the stories were posted on nairaland.

First, a google search of "economist intelligence unit Nigeria election" shows a list of articles published only by some of these Nigerian news websites mentioned above. No such article existed on The Economist Intelligence Unit website itself at the time of this research.

Checks on the websites revealed that the Cable.ng referred to it's source of information as BusinessDay. On checking Business Day, Iwok Iniobong who published the story did not reference his source for the report, just a mere mention of the EIU. If such a significant prediction was made by the EIU, it will be on the EIUnit website itself
https://www.thecable.ng/economist-intelligence-unit-predicts-victory-for-tinubu-in-2023-polls

https://businessday.ng/politics/article/economist-intelligence-unit-predicts-tinubus-victory/

In fact, the Economist Intelligence Unit has a page dedicated to Nigeria, which has political updates from Nigeria. No such information existed on that page https://country.eiu.com/nigeria

Further checks on the Nation newspaper website revealed that just like the Business Day website, there was no source for their story. Legit.ng from which the story was published on nairaland cited its source as the Nation newspaper
https://thenationonlineng.net/2023-economist-intelligence-unit-projects-tinubus-victory/

https://www.legit.ng/politics/1493824-economist-intelligence-unit-predicts-winner-nigerias-2023-presidential-election/

After an exhaustive research, it was clear that this was an endless loop, and I can conclude that there is no evidence to show that the Economist Intelligence Unit made such a prediction. These stories seem to have originated from the Business Day and the Nation Newspaper
Dont you know Bayo was behind the report!
PoliticsMuslim-Muslim Ticket Won’t Guarantee Peace – Rights Group by treesun(op): 6:56pm On Sep 23, 2022
The Muslim-Muslim ticket adopted by the All Progressives Congress will not guarantee peace and justice if allowed to sail through in the 2023 general elections, a human rights organisation under the aegis of Speak Up Stand Out, has said.

The organisation which was reacting to the publication of the final list of presidential candidates by the Independent National Electoral Commission, also attributed the plethora of challenges facing Nigeria
to poor leadership, bad economy and poverty.

The lead activist of SUSO, Rafiu Lawal, raised the issues during a press conference in Abuja on Friday in commemoration of the 2022 international peace day, organised in collaboration with the Africa Youth Movement and Centre for Youth Development and Advocacy.

He observed that Nigeria is faced with the scourge of violent conflict, ranging from terrorism, kidnapping for ransom, banditry, violent secessionist agitations.

Lawal said that virtually every conflict in Nigeria takes a religious and ethnic undertone not necessarily because they emerge from the faulty lines of religion and ethnicity, but rather because they are seen as a refuge with which to project individual or group differences, without consequence.

According to him, what would guarantee peace in the country is the presence of justice, social infrastructure, employment, among others.

He said, “Where we got it wrong is that the security situation didn’t start yesterday and it is as a result of failures of government over the years to put in place the blocs for peace. You don’t expect peace in a place where poverty and unemployment is about 35 per cent, where the Universities are shut down for months and where there is injustice.

“The elites are the ones enjoying all the prosperity and majority of the people are in penury. So insecurity started at a point where government refused to do what it out to do.

“In the present contest, a particular candidate has adopted same faith ticket but I think there should be sense of belonging. If the party wins, that means in the next four years, there won’t be justice. If we are advocating that the Presidency is a turn of a group, they should also know that the ticket should be inclusive with the other religion on it.”

Lawal observed that the North-West, North-East as well as the North-Central regions have remained the worst hit of insecurity crises.

Quoting a United Nations report, he disclosed that at least 1,126 people, died from armed banditry attacks between January and June in the North-West region alone, in 2020.

He said, “This is even as about 1,606 people killed in 125 fatal incidents (Global Terrorism Index, 2020), an average of 13 people per incident, suggests that Nigeria is the third-most terrorised country in the world.

“In no too distant past, we saw and still see how Southern states as well as the North Central are awash with violent farmers-herders clashes, exacerbating the tensions between the South’s predominantly Christian population and the mostly Muslim herders.

“This results in about 2,000 farmers-herders crisis related deaths being recorded annually in Nigeria (International Crisis Group). On the May 28 2021, residents of Benue state (North Central region) woke up to no fewer than 36 deaths – mostly young people, in a clash that has been between predominantly muslim herders and farmers who are predominantly Christians, taking the pattern of an ethno-religious crisis. Even yesterday.(Thursday), media reports had it that about 10 people were still killed by suspected herders in Benue State.”

While calling on Nigerians to vote wisely in 2023, Lawal stressed the need for the goverment to adopt a comprehensive security measure to tackle the menace, adding that, “we are not there yet but there is potential for us to get there. We need to adopt comprehensive security measures. We are tired of buying weapons because weapons don’t ultimately guarantee everlasting security. What will guarantee peace is social infrastructure, employment, justice among others.”

Speaking on the organisation, he said the SUSO Program is an initiative which aimed to empower young people with media and information knowledge and grassroots mobilisation skills to participate meaningfully in the socio-political development of their communities by maximising digital platforms for social mobilisation, amplifying youth voices and developing people-led campaigns on issues that affect youth and influencing policies that affect them.

Lawal said that the project is being implemented with 20 youth activists in three states (Lagos, Abuja and Enugu) and empowering these activists with the knowledge, skills and resources to organise activism to challenge issues affecting youth, develop innovative ways to engage other young people and social actors to campaign and drive social change.
