Romance / Valentine Aftermath: How To Overcome Ghosting by tripua: 1:51pm On Feb 15, 2021
Ghosting is when someone you are dating or have a friendship with goes AWOL. It is the practice of ending a personal relationship with someone suddenly and without explanation withdrawing from all communication.
If you were ghosted, you might not know why all you know is that there are no incoming calls, no text messages, and when you call, the person is unreachable or unresponsive whether online or offline. The effect of being ghosted can be very challenging, especially when no clue or traces of why he or she left.

WHY DO PEOPLE GHOST?
The one who ghosted you may be avoiding uncomfortable situations as a means of covering up trails, whatever reason people ghost, ghosting is now more common than ever.
Ghosting is a silent treatment which can be termed as emotional cruelty. You are confused, don’t know what could have happened and have no opportunity or medium to express your feelings. As a result, confusion, embarrassment and grief sets in. at the end, you might want to fault yourself and question yourself for what you may have done right or wrong.

HOW TO OVERCOME GHOSTING
- Though it can be challenging, stop blaming yourself. You need to understand that ghosting is cowardly and it is therefore not about you but them. It is good to take a break from dating or activities, but you must know that you shouldn’t blame someone who walked away without explanation.
- Look after yourself. To move forward, pay attention to yourself. Be compassionate about self-care and self-love. Go for activities that make you happy and surround yourself with friends and family who care about you and always support you.
- When thoughts of your ghoster come to mind, remind yourself that they shouldn’t be given the right to take your joy with them. Remind yourself that your ghoster lacked courage, mutual respect, thoughtfulness and emotional maturity required to have a healthy relationship. They probably never deserved a place in your life.

Politics / A Story Of Proactiveness– Taking A Clue From Vietnam With Zero COVID-19 Death by tripua: 4:30pm On Jul 07, 2020
The Cambridge online dictionary defines "proactive" as taking action by causing change and not only reacting to change when it happens. What can be a greater way of living than making things happen instead of waiting for things to happen to you?
A proactive person is ready before something happens. This takes foresightedness, being visionary and the readiness to act. This is the story of Vietnam. A country of about 97-million people according to https://www.worldbank.org/en/country/vietnam/overview. This country shares proximity to China, the world epicenter of Covid-19.

The story of Vietnam’s effective management of the crisis is no doubt that of proactiveness and foresightedness. While other nations of the world are counting their loss at an overwhelming rate, Vietnam took advantage of a small window to act early. At the point of acting, many nations of the world must have tagged them as over-reacting but that overreaction is paying off.

Taking cognizance of the possibility and reality of their health system being overwhelmed as presently experienced by other nations of the world, the nation took bold, decisive and proactive measure targeted at early prevention rather than cure. Experience has shown too many times that prevention even though looks expensive at the time of taking it is usually less expensive than cure in the long run.

What did Vietnam do? By early January, before it recorded any confirmed case, the government of Vietnam initiated a drastic action to prepare for the virus. As at that time, only two people had died from the infection In Wuhan. Vietnam moved swiftly to restrict travels, closed borders with China, and increased health checks at its borders. Schools were closed at the end of January and remained closed until mid-May. By March, Vietnam was sending everyone who entered the country and anyone within the country who had contact with a confirmed case to compulsory 14-days quarantine. While in quarantine, everyone was tested whether sick or not. Vietnam practically sealed off any area with suspected and confirmed cases.

To support all of the swift measures put in place, there was adequate communication with the citizens. Regular SMS messages were sent to all phones from the early stage on the situation at hand and what the people could do to protect themselves. Communication in leadership has been identified as a major tool for effective leadership. This communication must have stimulated a huge trust in the government as the people largely acted in support of the government. Today, Vietnam has only about 300 confirmed cases with zero death recorded.
It may be too late for other nations to apply lessons from Vietnam in handling Covid-19 but the lessons provided by Vietnam’s strategy will be ever true to leadership, to survival, to thriving in crisis, and in time of peace.

Family / If You Ever Feel Like Giving Up, Consider These 8 Important Things – They Were T by tripua: 11:25am On Jun 10, 2020
The legendary Mike Tyson wrote in the epilogue of his internationally acclaimed successful book titled undisputed truth. He said “sometimes I wake up and I just know it’s going to be a bad day. I think that no one loves me and how I’m going to have the life I planned to have when I first started out, and then I think that I might hurt someone… I’m a bum. I can’t believe my wife is still married to me. I feel like a dog… I hate myself sometimes… my baseline normal is to destroy myself.” How worse can it be with the thoughts of giving up? From this excerpt, we can identify some negative factors – self-hate, bitterness, low self-esteem, debt, poor self-judgment, physical and emotional pain, and betrayal.

Tyson Fury took it a bit further in his 2019 autobiography titled Behind the Mask. He wrote “The speedometer hit 160mph. This was it – the end was coming, the pain would be over. The sun was shining on a perfect summer day. I had just picked up a brand-new red convertible Ferrari; I was the heavyweight champion of the world; I had a beautiful wife and family. My life should have been as good as it gets, but my soul was as black as my boots. As I came off the motorway and slowed down I just knew it was time to leave all this torture behind. Right, come on, Tyson, just get this over with. My mind was made up, it was in a place of meaninglessness. I looked at the upcoming bridge. That was the target; that was the endpoint. The Ferrari’s engine roared back into life. It would be the last sound I would hear. In a couple of seconds, my mind would be clear, devoid of all the voices that were boiling in my head. I put my foot to the floor. The end was in view. Then at the moment before I was set to crash, a voice shot into my head: No! Stop!

What made Fury to stop? These 8 important things did magic. Consider them!
1. Stop! Think about the people that are dear to you

If you are ever faced with the thought of giving up, of suicidal thoughts, of ending it all, stop and think about the people that are dear to you. Your relationships, your spouse, your kids, perhaps even your father or mother. Imagine the pain, the grief for these people when they hear the news that you called it a quit. Imagine the smile disappearing from the faces of your spouse, of your child, or your aged parent. Imagine leaving them with a life time grieve and sorrow. There must be a better alternative to suicide.

2. Reaffirm your confidence over and over.
Recall your past challenges, battles, and wars and how you surmounted them all. Remember your past victories and achievements. You who overcame and emerged victorious in those past challenges can still be victorious in your present situation.
Also, see yourself sharing your story – of how you emerged victorious and before you know it, you will be telling your story for real.

3. You are strong still
If you are depressed, if you have pain, if you have low self-esteem, it doesn’t mean that you are a weak person, a bad person or the worst person on earth. It just means that you need help.

4. Ask for help
Seek professional help from reputable organizations and individuals who specialize in mental health. Your response to “how are you?” do not always have to be “I am fine”. People who seek help are not weak, rather, they are displaying a different dimension of strength.

5. Don’t doubt yourself
Even when people around you doubt you or your capacity to spin a comeback, don’t doubt yourself. Keep believing in yourself and your capabilities, then go ahead and show the world that there is always a way out of the deepest pits of a seemingly hopeless situations. There is always hope.

6. Don’t take to drinking or use of hard drugs – it doesn’t help, rather, it worsens the situation. Don’t renounce your faith too.

7. Take things for what they are
Your relationship (past or present) with that young man or woman is not your life, it is a relationship. Your job is not your life, it is your job. That project is not your life, it is a project- not more! When you take things for what they are, it will help you not to take things too personal.

8. Ask God and trust God for help, for empowerment. People who have found themselves in very difficult situations, people who have contemplated giving up and committing suicide have written memoirs of how God came through for them when they cried out to Him asking Him for help. It is why your difficult time is not a time to renounce your faith but a time to ask Him for strength, for help, and empowerment. If God doesn’t help you, nothing else can and nothing else will work
It is a new dawn for you. You will emerge better!

Politics / The Psychology Of Protests And How It Affects You by tripua: 10:39am On Jun 10, 2020
Protests are as old as human existence. You’ve heard that before right? I will try another opening!
Participation in protests has to be understood from the perspective of emotion. Emotion on the other hand has to be understood psychologically – don’t forget, psychology is the science of behavior and how the mind works.
The mind doesn’t work alone. It works with forces. These forces are the conscious, the subconscious, and the super-conscious. When we ask, how does emotion works? We need to look inward. We need to look at the internal forces. This is because emotion starts and ends with the mind even in its behavioral form.

For protests to take place, anger must first be in place; and in that anger must be a great move of urgency. It goes beyond admitting and registering displeasure. Anger is an emotion crucial to the most radical and demanding protests. So for every radical protest, there are radical people. The radicalism can be a response to shared grievances, lack of trust in authority, a vote of no confidence, and any form of injustice which may be systemic, endemic, or perennial.

Of course, you have violent protest where vandalism, thuggery, and violence are the order of the day. As such, the peace of the society is threatened. Then you have moderate protest which does not tolerate violence of any kind but seeks to achieve the aim of the protest as peaceful as possible.
Keeping protests peaceful is usually not an easy job especially a protest that witnessed large gathering and great number of participants. It is usually difficult for peaceful protests to remain peaceful; because of hawks, thugs and even politicians who are ever ready to hijack protests to their own gain. Politicians are always looking for ways to score political points, thugs and criminals are on the look out to steal, kill and destroy then you have those who want to vent their anger on anything and anyone at any given opportunity.

The most important thing usually wrong with protests aside peaceful protests becoming violent is the structure of every protest! The structure of protests is based on perception. We see things differently. Nay, we see things the same way but we do not respond to things the same way.
The way we see things determine how we respond. In seeing, several things are involved – experience, situation, disposition, personality, education, and many other things. All of these factors affect perception. The way we see things do not just affect how we react, it affects what we focus on. It is why different people have a different focus and different analysis. Our views and perceptions are driven by emotional needs to see things differently. However, the fact that people see things differently does not demean protest actions and struggles but as always, views and perceptions should be respected

What is the motive behind the protest?
When the motive behind a protest is asked, usually, respondents see the question as an attempt to de-legitimize their struggle. Question on the motive of protest should rather be seen as a means of validating the goal and objectives a struggle seeks to achieve. Little wonder, many times when protesters are asked why they are protesting, they have no idea or they switch immediately to defense mode giving wrong answers to right questions. As a matter of fact, legitimate and needful protests need no serious effort at being defended. At the same time, the motive should be loudly communicated and each participant should know, realize or determine without a doubt why he or she is a part of a protest.

Attacking non-conformist
Protests usually take sharp dimensions one of which is the diversion of anger from the cause of the protests and the authorities whose urgent attention is being sought to non-conformists. Non-conformists in this register are people who refuse to participate in a protest. So protesters, angered by people who refuse to join or participate in a protest divert their venom from the cause to the non-conformists. However, attacking non-conformists never work. The goal must be to gain more allies among people who would normally not want to agree or go with you. Protesters must, therefore, resist the urge to attack perceived non-conformists (remember that we see things differently) rather, focus on the issues at hand.

Back to motive
The prevailing emotion after a protest should not be anger against people who didn’t participate but of happiness and a sense of achievement for contributing to a cause deemed worthy. Protesters must also bear in mind that not all outcomes of a protest are immediate. Some results take days, some months, some years, and some, centuries!

Health / Your Face Mask Should Fulfill These Important Criteria by tripua: 6:44pm On Apr 30, 2020
In the middle of the ongoing pandemic, there has been a wide debate on the use of a face mask. As the matter stands now, it is no longer a matter of whether to use it or not. It is now established that the use of masks will protect you and others in public places such as the bus, the market, shopping malls, and other public places. It has also been established that cloth or regular face masks will do for non-health workers.

What Will Your Face Mask Do?
While the use of face masks does not guarantee a 100% chance of not contracting the virus, it is believed that face masks help to create a physical barrier that prevents asymptomatic carriers of the virus from easily spreading it. The clothes in the face mask simply help to trap particles and droplets from cough, sneeze, and saliva while talking.
It is therefore important that you wear face masks in public places.

With the upsurge in the demand for face masks, tailors and other local producers in town have sprung into action producing as much as they can. This in itself is a great development saving us the scarcity that would have hit us. According to Lauren Masur’s piece published on the kitchn, face masks should fulfill the following criteria to prove effective.

1. Fit tightly but comfortably against the side of the face. It should be secured with ties or ear loops.
2. While including multiple layers of fabric, your face mask should allow easy breathing without restriction.
3. Materials that allow easy laundry and drying without damage to the shape is what should be used.
4. Your face mask having an inserted filter is an added advantage. For example, adding a coffee filter increases the effectiveness of your mask.
Caught unaware in public, you can use your cotton-based t-shirt or bandana until you can lay hands on a face mask.

Family / All-time Proven Ways Of Coping With Loneliness by tripua: 2:54pm On Apr 24, 2020
Adams had lost his 59-year-old dad in the second week of January. So the year didn’t really start on a good note. In March, a total lockdown was imposed on the city. Banished to his single self-contained room, his 9-month-old relationship crashed exactly 6 days into the lockdown. Even though there were already red signals for Adams’ relationship, it was a bad time altogether. To say he was lonely will be understating the obvious.
It turned out that Adams is not alone. There are thousands of people whose stories aren’t exactly like Adams’ but who are facing loneliness. This post provides tested and proven ways of coping with loneliness.

1. Stay in Contact
Use technology to keep in touch. Share updates and pictures to keep your spirit up when things are tough. Just as many people argue that social media contributes to spirit dampening, there are shreds of evidence that it can be a channel for uplifting the spirit. The key thing is to control its use. In addition, it is important that you don’t just take in all you see on social media rather, post your comments, thoughts, and opinions on things you see and use it to keep in touch with friends, colleagues, and family online.

2. Communicate the Old Fashion Way
Yes, instant and social messaging have always been more favored but this is time to largely drop instant messaging for voice communication. Don’t just send a text, dial the number. Just hearing a friend or family member’s voice can help reduce loneliness. In the same way, there are people who will feel elated and connected by hearing your voice too.

3. Get Engaged at Home.
Plan out your day and follow a regular but convenient routine. Participate in online meetings, learn new skills, a new language, and new topics of interest. In short, do some of the things you have always wanted to do but that you have not had time for. Cook a new food recipe, a meal you’ve not had time to cook before or in a long while. It helps spend time.

4. Take Good Care of Yourself.
There isn’t a better time than now for you to pay robust attention to yourself, your health, how you feel, and the state of your mind. In that vein, do exercise to keep fit, eat well, relax enough, and listen to good music. Is there a movie people are talking about? This is a time to see it and join the conversation.

5. Be Hopeful
In reality, you are not going to be alone forever. Whatever has boxed you now will soon pass. Do you feel alone even in the midst of people? You won’t always be with them. Whichever way, sometime soon, the indices will change.

6. Help Others When You Can.
Little acts of kindness here and there goes a long way to boost your morale. You will feel good about yourself. Compliment others, appreciate others, and help people when you can. It all comes back with a great feeling that sheds off the feeling of loneliness.

7. Start Training Others.
Are there things you are proficient at? This is a time to teach others. You can teach people how to write, how to speak, how to knot tie or groom self in general, how to care for hair. Just anything you are good at. The time you spend in preparing for what you want to teach, the time you spend in teaching, the time you spend appraising your lessons will not allow loneliness to take a toll over you.

In conclusion, Loneliness is not a mental disorder in itself but it can prepare the ground and lead to mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, etc. In case you have tried all you can and all that is recommended here but you seem not to fare better, then it is time to talk to someone who can be of help. You should seek professional help without delay.

Family / 5 Household Cleaning Materials To Get Rid Of COVID-19 And Other Germs by tripua: 10:35am On Apr 07, 2020
At the newsroom of the world health organization https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses the organization stated that it is continuously monitoring and responding to the outbreak and that it will continue to give updates as more is known about coronavirus, how it spreads and how it is affecting people worldwide.
Coronavirus, a large family of viruses which is known to cause respiratory infections had broken out in November 2019 and has since infected over a million and two hundred thousand with confirmed death of over 60,000 people.
In addressing how long the virus survive on surfaces, the WHO stated that it is still not certain how long the virus survives but strides suggest that it may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days depending on the type of surface temperature or humidity of the environment.
The World Health Organization therefore recommends cleaning of surfaces with simple disinfectant to kill the virus and protect members of a household. The organization also recommend cleaning of hands with an alcohol based hand rub or washing of hands with soap and water.

1. SOAP AND WATER
The United Nations Children’s Fund https://www.unicef.org/coronavirus/everything-you-need-know-about-washing-your-hands-protect-against-coronavirus-covid-19 describes the hands as one of the most common ways that the virus spreads from one person to the next. One of the cheapest, easiest and most important ways to prevent the spread of a virus is to wash your hands with soap and water. It is important to note that cold water and warm water are equally effective at killing germs and viruses – as long as you use soap.

2. ALCOHOL BASED HAND SANITIZER
The Centre for Disease Control https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/show-me-the-science-hand-sanitizer.html recommends soap and water for hand washing but if soap and water are not available, using a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can help against getting sick and spreading germs to others. Whatever other ingredients like moisturizers or scents present in a hand sanitizer, alcohol is the active ingredient and should be 60-95%.

3. BLEACH
Bleach is especially effective on hard (non-porous) surfaces https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/cleaning-disinfection.html High touch surfaces can be cleaned and disinfected daily in household. Diluted household bleach solution (at least 1000ppm sodium hydrochloride) can be used for surfaces with strict adherence to manufacturer’s instructions.
Ensure a contact time of at least 1 minute and proper ventilation during and after application. Note that it is not necessary to mix bleach with any other cleanser.

4. METHYLATED SPIRIT
NBC news https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/better/amp/ncna1160271 noted that coronavirus is no match for good disinfecting products. Methylated spirits containing 95% ethanol or 100% isopropyl alcohol for at least 30 seconds. This is particularly useful against hard surfaces like phones and electronics in general.

5. HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
According to consumers report https://www.consumerreports.org/cleaning/common-household-products-that-can-destroy-novel-coronavirus/ Just 3% of household hydrogen peroxide is effective in deactivating rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold within 6 to 8 minutes of exposure. And since rhinovirus is more difficult to destroy than coronaviruses, hydrogen peroxide should be able to break down coronavirus in less time. Since it is not corrosive, it can be used on metal surfaces but note that it can discolor fabrics. It is effective for hard to reach corners especially when poured into spray bottles.

Literature / 30 Significant Take-aways From Man's Search For Meaning (+ Free Copy) by tripua: 10:56am On Apr 04, 2020
Originally written in 1946 book by Viktor Frankl, the book is a two part chronicle of his experiences as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps during World War II. In the book, the author described his psycho-therapeutic method, which involved identifying a purpose in life to feel positive about, and then immersively imagining that outcome.

According to Frankl, the way a prisoner imagined the future affected his longevity. The book intends to answer the question “How was everyday life in a concentration camp reflected in the mind of the average prisoner?” Part One constitutes Frankl’s analysis of his experiences in the concentration camps, while Part Two introduces his ideas of meaning and his theory called logotherapy.

Here are 30 significant take-aways. Whether you’ve read the book or not, these cogent points directly taken from the book is a further exposition of the book

1. More people will die from lack of hope, lack of something to live for than they will die from lack of food or medicine.
2. Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud believed, or a quest for power, as Alfred Adler taught, but a quest for meaning.
3. Three possible sources for meaning: in work (doing something significant), in love (caring for another person), and in courage during difficult times. Suffering in and of itself is meaningless; we give our suffering meaning by the way in which we respond to it.
4. Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation. You cannot control what happens to you in life, but you can always control what you will feel and do about what happens to you.
5. It insists that life is meaningful and that we must learn to see life as meaningful despite our circumstances. It emphasizes that there is an ultimate purpose to life.
6. Like success, happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one’s dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one’s surrender to a person other than oneself.
7. Love is the ultimate and the highest goal to which man can aspire. Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and belief have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love.
8. Love goes very far beyond the physical person of the beloved. It finds its deepest meaning in his spiritual being, his inner self.
9. Humor was another of the soul’s weapons in the fight for self-preservation. It is well known that humor, more than anything else in the human make-up, can afford an aloofness and an ability to rise above any situation, even if only for a few seconds. The attempt to develop a sense of humor and to see things in a humorous light is some kind of a trick learned while mastering the art of living.
10. The consciousness of one’s inner value is anchored in higher, more spiritual things, and cannot be shaken by suffering.
11. If there is a meaning in life at all, then there must be a meaning in suffering. Suffering is an ineradicable part of life, even as fate and death. Without suffering and death human life cannot be complete.
12. The way in which a man accepts his fate and all the suffering it entails, the way in which he takes up his cross, gives him ample opportunity—even under the most difficult circumstances—to add a deeper meaning to his life. It may remain brave, dignified and unselfish. Or in the bitter fight for self-preservation he may forget his human dignity and become no more than an animal.
13. A man who could not see the end of his “provisional existence” was not able to aim at an ultimate goal in life. He ceased living for the future, in contrast to a man in normal life. Therefore the whole structure of his inner life changed; signs of decay set in which we know from other areas of life. The unemployed worker, for example, is in a similar position. His existence has become provisional and in a certain sense he cannot live for the future or aim at a goal
14. It is a peculiarity of man that he can only live by looking to the future and so the sudden loss of hope and courage can have a deadly effect.
15. He who has a way to live for can bear with almost any how. Woe to him who saw no more sense in his life, no aim, no purpose, and therefore no point in carrying on. He was soon lost.
16. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual. These tasks, and therefore the meaning of life, differ from man to man, and from moment to moment. It is therefore impossible to define the meaning of life in a general way.
17. The ultimate extreme state for man is that point where he gives up hope.
18. Someone looks down on each of us in difficult hours—a friend, a wife, somebody alive or dead, or a God—and he would not expect us to disappoint him. He would hope to find us suffering proudly—not miserably—knowing how to die.
19. From all this we may learn that there are two races of men in this world, but only these two—the “race” of the decent man and the “race” of the indecent man. Both are found everywhere; they penetrate into all groups of society. No group consists entirely of decent or indecent people. In this sense, no group is of “pure race”

For a disease that forbids touch or any close contact whatsoever, it is important to get creative at saying thank you to Doctors, Nurses, lab attendants, consultants and all caregivers who have made huge sacrifices at the outbreak of a pandemic ravaging the world. Corona Virus (Covid-19) has already infected more than 500,000 persons leading to an overstretched health system and personnel. Many of these health workers have not slept in weeks, some have not seen their spouses and newly born kids in some cases. Some healthcare workers have even paid the ultimate price of sacrificing their lives. Here are how people are showing their gratitude across the world.

Family / Productivity Hack: Can You Stay Without Screen For A Day? by tripua: 11:27am On Mar 03, 2020
When it comes to being highly productive, television and gadget screen time take a large chunk of our time.
According to a Nielson report in 2017, an average U.S citizen spent an average of 5 hours, 4 minutes daily watching TV per day. That is roughly 36 hours per week and 77 days per year.
In a 2014 report published by www.vanguardngr.com, 90.9 percent of youth spend about 3 hours on screen time. That is roughly 21 hours per week and about 46 days per year.
For some, the amount of time lost to Screen time is unquantifiable. Our productivity hack for the week is for you to spend one day without a screen (including screens from phones, tablets, and computer systems). We agree that some people’s tool of work is their phone but can you do without watching stuff on your smart gadgets in a day? No movies, skits, no social media lounging, no non-business chatting.
The benefits are vast. This simple effort can help you become healthier, have a better relationship, break addictions, become more focused, sleep better and even become more creative.

Family / The Science Of Patience: How To Become More Patient by tripua: 10:36am On Mar 03, 2020
When it comes to that great virtue called patience, not many have it in abundance. Little wonder, decisions are hastily made by many with far-reaching damages. Little wonder, errors abound in people’s day to day activities. The workplace, homes, career and several people’s future is in clear jeopardy because of huge patience deficiency.

How do you react when traffic is not moving? Do you honk indiscriminately or you are tempted to keep changing line? What do you do when the ATM queue is not moving? Are you tempted to change your queue? It is interesting how the queue you leave seems to start moving the moment you join the other queue, then you are tempted to go back. It is all impatience! What do you do when your business isn’t producing projected return on investment? Do you lose your cool and dump the business?

Everything good takes time. Everything that takes time needs patience. Patience is the ability to accept or tolerate problems, hard times and people without becoming annoyed or anxious. It is also the ability to suppress annoyance and anger when confronted with delay.

Patience allows you time to think, completely assess the situation and make an informed decision. Patience puts you in a vantage position of understanding things for what they are. It is that deep breath you take just to get your thoughts back in order and put your feelings under control.
Nytimes.com reported a 2012 study in the journal of positive psychology which identified 3 distinct expressions of patience. They are:
1. Maintaining calmness when dealing with someone who is upset, angry or being a pest.
2. Enduring life hardships and a serious setback
3. Suppressing annoyance at delays.

The good news here is that your patience index can be modified for you to become a better person.
1. Identify situations that easily upset you.
Is it slow-moving traffic, slow internet, slow-talking partner or colleague? Whatever it is should be identified. That’s your patience modification starting point.

2. Having identified what makes you easily lose your cool, talk yourself into enduring the situation and withholding your reactions. Find a personal statement to always say to yourself e.g. I will hold on a little bit more, I still have some time in my hand, I don’t need to be in a hurry, etc. In talking yourself through the situation, take deep breaths, it helps to clear your mind.

3. Start your patience journey with the little things every day
One of the mistakes people make in behavioral modification attempt is to want to hit change as a one-off event. This approach almost always fails. To greatly be patient with people, you must start with your tolerance level with the little things that make up your day

4. Set realistic goals
The impacts of unrealistic goals are enormous. When you are unable to reach your goals, you generate negative emotions such as disappointment and failure. When you carry the bag of failure and disappointment around, it will be more than difficult to be patient with things and people around you.

5. Be robust with gratitude
Graciousness and gratitude are inseparable. Gratitude finds its root in graciousness which is immensely positive energy. With gratitude, you recognize the goodness in your life, in people around you and the environment. Gratitude and happiness are strongly related. The more grateful you are, the happier you become. The happier you become, the more positive energy you generate which leads to improved health increased tolerance and patience and increased capacity to deal with situations.

Culture / HAPPY LEAP DAY: 3 Important Facts About The Leap Day You Should Know by tripua: 9:18am On Feb 29, 2020
There is no doubt that even the most familiar things in life have huge capacity to surprise you. The calendar as simple and as regular as it is surprises us nearly every four years. It adds an extra day giving us 366 days instead of the much familiar 365 days. This addition is built into the calendar in alignment with the earth’s movement around the sun.

Why leap day?
According to www.history.com, the actual time it takes the earth to orbit its solar is slightly longer than 365 days. In actual fact, it is 365.2421 days and while this difference might seem negligible, that little difference make a lot of difference over decades and centuries (Little things count, don’t they?). So to ensure consistency with the true and complete astronomical year, it is important to periodically add an extra day to make up the lost time and get the calendar back in synch with the correct conditions of the stars.

Shortly after Caesar, the great emperor was enthroned, he engaged the help of philosopher Sosigenes of Alexandria to modify the solar calendar in use which featured 365 days and an occasional intercalary month which was usually inserted when astronomers observes the correct conditions of the stars.
The modification done by Caesar and Sosigenes was to add a day to the second month of the year every 4th year. This was what gave birth to a leap day. This calendar called the Julian calendar (named after Julius Caesar) took effect from January 1st, 45 BCE.

By 16th century, scholars observed that time was still slipping because of Caesar’s over estimation of the solar year by 11minutes. This over estimation affected the date of Easter by roughly 10 days. The little problem created mandated Pope Gregory XIII to commission another modification of the calendar. This modification kept the leap day in the Julian calendar but accounted for the inaccuracy by eliminating leap day on centurial years not divisible by 400. This elimination is why 1700, 1800, 1900 were not leap year but 2000 was.

1. The modified calendar which is used in most part of the world was therefore named after Pope Gregory XIII who introduced it in October 1582. The calendar was promptly adopted by Spain, Portugal and Italy while Great Britain (including a part that is now United States of America) adopted it in 1752.
2. Every year that is divisible by 4 is a leap year. If it is divisible by 100 but not by 400, it will not be a leap year. E.g. 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 are leap years. If the year marks the turn of the century, it will only be a leap year if it is also divisible by 400. E.g. 1900, 2000 was a leap year but 2100 won’t be.
3. Those born on leap days i.e. those born on 29th of february are called Leaplings. A leapling can celebrate his or her birthday either a day before their real birthday (28th of February) or a day after (March 1st). In New Zealand, the official birthday falls on 28th February on non leap years while it falls on March 1 in the United Kingdom.
