New findings have revealed that hydrogen sulfide gas, which is found in the smell of rotten eggs and human fart, can reduce your risk for diseases such as cancer, heart attacks, stroke, arthritis, as well as dementia. Illustrative photo A study published in the journal Medicinal Chemistry Communications has revealed that the smell of flatulence has secret health benefits and could help stave off cancer, strokes, heart attacks and dementia, According to TheCable News, Scientists in the journal, revealed that passing gas may help you live longer and in a suprise twist, smelling the gas might prevent dementia. Hydrogen sulfide is one of a number of potent smelly gases produced by bacteria as it breaks down food in the gut. It is toxic in large doses but in tiny amounts it helps protect cells and fight illness, according to researchers at Exeter University. When cells become stressed by disease they try to draw in enzymes to generate their own minute quantities of hydrogen sulfide. The chemical helps to preserve mitochondria, which drive energy production in blood vessel cells and regulate inflammation, and without it the cell can switch off and die. Mirror UK reported that Professor Matt Whiteman from University of Exeter's medical school said: "When cells become stressed by disease, they draw in enzymes to generate minute quantities of hydrogen sulfide. "This keeps the mitochondria ticking over and allows cells to live. If this doesn't happen, the cells die and lose the ability to regulate survival and control inflammation. "We have exploited this natural process by making a compound, called AP39, which slowly delivers very small amounts of this gas specifically to the mitochondria. "Our results indicate that if stressed cells are treated with AP39, mitochondria are protected and cells stay alive." Before it can be tested on humans, researchers have run disease models to see how effective AP39 is, and early results show that it can help up to 80 percent more mitochondria survive highly destructive conditions such as cardiovascular disease. Fellow researcher Dr. Mark Wood added: "Although hydrogen sulfide is well known as a pungent, foul-smelling gas in rotten eggs and flatulence, it is naturally produced in the body and could in fact be a healthcare hero with significant implications for future therapies for a variety of diseases." http://www.tori.ng/news/39223/did-you-know-scientists-reveal-that-sniffing-farts.html |

Despite the economic recession that the country is presently facing, the Presidency on Wednesday declared that the Nigerian economy is performing better than the predictions of the International Monetary Fund, IMF. It, however, admitted that the inflation and unemployment rates in the country had remained high despite efforts by the current government. The Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu, stated this in a statement while reacting to the Gross Domestic Product figures for the 2016 second quarter by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS. Dipeolu noted that the report, while confirming a temporary decline, has also indicated what he called hopeful expectation in the country’s economic trajectory, stressing that there were clear indications that the second half of the year will be better. “Besides the growth recorded in the agriculture and solid mineral sectors, the Nigerian economy in response to the policies of the Buhari presidency is also doing better than what the IMF had estimated with clear indications that the second half of the year would be even much better,” he said. The presidential aide assured that the current administration would continue to work diligently on the economy and engage all stakeholders to ensure that beneficial policy initiatives were actively pursued and the dividends delivered to the Nigerian people. Quoting the recently released data from the NBS as showing a decline in GDP by -2.06% in the second quarter of 2016 on a year-on-year basis, he attributed the outcome to a sharp contraction in the oil sector due to huge losses of crude oil production as a result of vandalisation and sabotage. http://dailypost.ng/2016/08/31/presidency-reacts-nbs-report-insists-economy-performing-better-imfs-prediction/?

People from Chibok community resident in Abuja and members of the #BringBackOurGirls (BBOG), movement on Monday said they regretted voting for President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election. They expressed their regrets on in Abuja at a protest rally over the inability of the government to take measures to rescue the over 200 school girls kidnapped by the terrorist group, Boko Haram, in their school in Chibok, Borno State, in 2014. Boko Haram had last week released a video of the girls who are still alive and said they were willing to trade the girls in exchange for their members in detention in various prisons. One of the girls, Maida Yakubu, who also spoke in the video asked their parents to beg the Nigerian government to accede to the demand of Boko Haram so that they would be released. Speaking during the protest on Monday, the chairman of the Chibok Community, Hosea Tsambido said members of the Community and BBOG voted massively for Mr. Buhari as against his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, who they voted for in 2011. “They tell us that our girls seen in the latest video was merely an arrangement,” Mr. Tsambido said. “No one has spoken to the family of any of the Chibok girls since the last video was released, by the terrorists. We regret our votes. We regret it.” Speaking further, the community leader said, “We were promised that the president would visit Sambisa, after becoming president. We were also told that within two weeks our girls would be rescued. “But over one year now, there is no tangible statement about our girls. The presidency has stated instead that it is confused.” The BBOG group said it was embarking on a fresh 14-day campaign to re-energize the clamour for the rescue of the girls. The protesters were heading for the Presidential villa to speak with the president as they usually do during their protests. They were however, stopped by a combined team of security personnel at the entrance of the three arms zone. The group said the current administration has ran out of excuses regarding the return of the Chibok girls. “No more excuses,” they chanted several times. The protest was still ongoing as at the time of this report. A pro-Buhari group, the Buhari Media Support Group, (BMSG), had appealed to the “BringBackOurGirls” (BBOG) to shelve today’s demonstration to the Presidential Villa. The group in a statement by one of its members, Muhammad Labbo, said that was necessary to avoid complications and anything capable of undermining efforts of the government to rescue the girls unharmed. Mr. Labbo noted that playing politics with the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls was unhelpful and embarrassing to the government and counterproductive to the silent efforts of the military to rescue them. He said the government would take serious exception to the mobilisation of the parents of the kidnapped girls to score political advantage or exploiting the tragedy to play to the gallery. Mr. Labbo said dragging the parents of the victims to Abuja for endless demonstrations would only compound a bad situation, and give them the impression that a rescue mission “is as simple as abc.” According to him, the BringBackOur Girls Group should not claim monopoly of patriotism and humanity over the government by seeking to undermine the silent efforts of the military to map out strategies to safely rescue the girls. He said if there was a formula for rescuing the girls within 24 hours unharmed, government would have done that, reminding the Bring Back Our Girls group of the complexities and sensitivity of hostage rescue missions. ”The terrorists have no rules of engagement and therefore, would not mind killing all the hostages if the Nigerian military attempts any rash action,” he said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/209038-regret-voting-buhari-2015-chibok-community-says.html |

Susanne, the widow of the Chief Protocol Officer to the Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Desmond Nunugwo, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, of killing her husband and labelling him a criminal. The widow at the weekend recalled that she called her husband’s phone repeatedly but it was switched off as she did not know he was in EFCC’s custody in Wuse 2, Abuja. “Around 3pm on June 9, my husband had gone to pick up our son from school and they both returned home. He later went out. Around 6pm, I called his line and it rang once. I tried his number several times later, but it was off,” Susanne told Punch. “The next morning, I got apprehensive when he didn’t come home. However, around 3.48pm, someone called me with his phone and said my husband was in the EFCC’s custody and I should come to bail him.” Susanne said on getting to the EFCC, she was told to go and get a man because being a woman, her husband could not be released on bail to her. She said, “The EFCC later called me to their office to come and bail my husband while he was already at the mortuary. “I later received a phone call from a former colleague of mine that he had read the news online that my husband was arrested for fraud and he had died.” The widow said she was informed that her husband’s arrest was sequel to a petition written by one Uloma, his business associate. Susanne said, “She (Uloma) told the EFCC that she met my husband on a flight in 2012 when he was on his way to the US where I went to give birth. She said my husband introduced her to a third party with whom she did a N91m transaction.” Susanne berated the EFCC for labelling her husband a fraudster even after causing his death, adding that the anti-graft agency must clear his name. The nephew of the deceased, Amaechi Ihezie, also told Punch that when he visited the EFCC, investigators told him that Desmond slumped and died. “The EFCC told me that before he died, he wrote a statement of four pages. They gave him his phone to make calls for about two hours and then nobody came to bail him and so they said they transferred him to their head office and that a few hours later, he started to complain of discomfort and slumped. They said he was rushed to the hospital and confirmed dead,” he added. In a petition addressed to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), the lawyer of the family, Mr. Paul Edeh, alleged a cover-up in the case. The petition partly read, “The EFCC has blatantly refused that a post-mortem examination should be carried out on the body so as not to be indicted. This may have been the reason why more than two months after Desmond’s death, no move has been made to carry out an autopsy. “After many visits by our clients to the EFCC and the police, both agencies have maintained that Desmond died a natural death. One, therefore, wonders how both the police and the EFCC could come up with such a common position in the absence of a medical examination to determine the cause of death.” EFCC had said in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, that the deceased allegedly fraudulently obtained N91m from an acquaintance after he tricked her into believing that he had high net worth business associates in Dubai, who were on the verge of buying NICON Insurance, and convinced her of their disposition to help her stockfish business. She then allegedly transferred N91m into an account, Mainage General Merchants, in Diamond Bank. “After the transfer of the funds, he became evasive forcing the complainant to report to the EFCC. Consequently, he was arrested in Utako, Abuja, at about 5.33pm on Thursday, June 9, 2016. “He admitted to receiving the money from the complainant, with the additional information that he transferred N30m of the said money to Norway. But he could not explain the whereabouts of the balance of N61m. “The suspect was detained at about 7.30pm, in the absence of anybody to take him on bail. Six hours later, he suddenly complained of discomfort and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/08/15/efcc-killed-husband-hours-arrest-wife-late-defence-ministry-official/? |

The Nigerian military asked a man it declared wanted to go home after he reported at one of its facilities in Borno State. Ahmed Bolori, the coordinator of the Fa’ash Foundation and the Partnership Against Violent Extremism and resident of Maiduguri, was declared wanted alongside two others on Sunday. The Nigerian Army in a statement said the three, which included journalist, Ahmad Salkida and Aisha Wakil, a lawyer, were declared wanted for their alleged ties to the Boko Haram sect. The Army said the three refused to provide useful information to authorities despite having clear and unfettered access to the sect and also held them responsible for the Boko Haram video that was released on Sunday. The video purportedly showed the Army conducting area bombardment of an unknown location where the abducted Chibok girls are kept, killing many of them in the process. The Defence Headquarters denied killing the girls and said it was also analysing the video to establish its authenticity. In a message released by Farook Kperoogi, a U.S.-based Nigerian journalism professor, Mr. Bolori reported at “the top military barracks in Maiduguri, waited for more than two hours, but there was no one to interrogate or arrest him.” Mr. Kperoogi posted the development on his Facebook page which he said was part of the conversation he had with Mr. Bolori. Mr. Kperoogi also attached a WhatsApp conversation in which Mr. Bolori could be seen discussing with an official of the Defence Military Intelligence about how and where he could turn himself in for interrogations. IMG_3723Mr. Kperoogi said Mr. Bolori was later told to “go home” after spending more than two hours waiting and making frantic calls to Army hierarchy to come and detain him, having been declared wanted. The announcement by the Army declaring Messrs. Bolori, Salkida and Wakil wanted has triggered debates across the world. The spokesperson for the Army, Sani Usman, could not be reached to comment for this story Monday morning. He did not answer or return calls made to him. Read the full statement by Mr. Kperoogi below: It is now self-evident that no one in the highest reaches of governance and security enforcement in Nigeria is thinking. How can you declare people “wanted” when you haven’t even invited them for questioning–and they haven’t resisted your invitation? I just got off the phone with Ambassador Ahmed Umar Bolori, one of the people declared “wanted” by the Nigerian military.IMG_20160815_084519 He told me he called the Chief of Army Staff, the spokesperson of the Nigerian military who announced him “wanted,” and other top military officers and said he was at their beck and call and didn’t need to be declared “wanted” since he wasn’t in hiding. He then went ahead and turned himself in at the top military barracks in Maiduguri, waited for more than two hours, but there was no one to interrogate or arrest him. He called and texted the chief of army staff and the military spokesperson again and pleaded with them to send someone to detain, arrest, interrogate, or do whatever they wanted to do to him because he wanted to clear his name. He was later told to go home and return the following day! They told a “wanted” man to go home and come back the next day! Can you believe that? First, he is personally known to the chief of army staff and to the military spokesman. These people also know his home in Maiduguri. They know where to get him if they want to. Yet they declared him “wanted.” Is there any parallel to this level of puzzling incompetence in the world? Who declares people “wanted” without any interest in seeing, much less interrogating, them? http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/208607-nigerian-army-confused-asks-wanted-man-ahmed-bolori-go-home-turned.html? |

Mecca| A group of geologists from Oxford University have finally lifted the veil upon one of the most intriguing cultural and religious mysteries of the Islamic faith: Where did the Black Stone of Mecca originate? Every year, millions of muslim pilgrims gather around the Kaaba, also known as the Sacred House, a cubic-shaped building at the centre of Islam’s most sacred mosque, Al-Masjid al-Haram, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for the ritual of the hajj, where pilgrims must walk seven times around the Kaaba in a counterclockwise direction, a ceremonial practice that has endured for fourteen centuries. According to Islamic tradition, the stone was set intact into the Kaaba’s wall by the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the year 605 A.D., five years before his first revelation. Since then it has been broken into a number of fragments and is now cemented into a silver frame in the side of the Kaaba. Its physical appearance is that of a fragmented dark rock, polished smooth by the hands of millions of pilgrims. Islamic tradition holds that it fell from Heaven to show Adam and Eve where to build an altar Anthony Hampton and his team of geologists had, from the beginning, a major problem to further their examination of the Stone of the Kaaba since it may not be examined or fragments taken from it. “Part of the fog surrounding this stone is that the stone’s caretakers haven’t allowed any scientific tests to be performed on the stone, for obvious cultural and religious reasons, so we had to think of other ways of gathering information about this sacred object” he explains. Local samples of sand where taken from a 2 km radius from the emplacement of the stone, which revealed its first clues. “We found important quantities of iridium, a metal that is found in meteorites with an abundance much higher than its average abundance in the Earth’s crust. We also found many shatter cones, a rare geological feature that is only known to form in the bedrock beneath meteorite impact craters or underground nuclear explosions” he adds. The team of researchers hope the discovery will help shed light on the origin of the stone but also on the origins of Islam itself. “It is very interesting to see how, what started as the pagan worship of a meteorite, bloomed into, a few centuries later, a monotheistic religion that has spread around the world” comments religious historian Ahmed Ben Alifa. http://worldnewsdailyreport.com/saudi-arabia-black-stone-of-mecca-revealed-to-be-a-meteorite/ |
