Senator Shehu Sani of Kaduna Central District has cautioned the federal government against intimidating the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and its leaders, for protesting the recent increase in petrol price. Mr. Sani condemned the government’s “campaign of calumny and blackmail” against the unionists, and said Nigerians must appreciate the NLC for standing by the masses over the years and for making contributions to the realization of political change in Nigeria. A nationwide called by the NLC in protest of fuel price hike and electricity tariff raise began Wednesday after talks with the government failed on Tuesday night. The government has vowed to implement a no-work-no-pay policy, and has threatened “appropriate response by the law enforcement agencies” against union leaders who attempt to barricade gates or lock up offices to enforce the strike. In a statement issued on Wednesday , Mr. Sani said as the umbrella body responsible for the welfare of Nigerian workers, NLC has the right to protest or to opt for dialogue or not. “Campaign of calumny and blackmail against the NLC and Labour leaders simply for speaking out and standing up for their traditional constituents must stop,” Mr. Sani said. “We joined and applauded the NLC for leading a mass protest against increase in pump prices of petroleum products in the past. “It’s hypocritical to condemn them now for their principled stand on same issue. Our quests for justice and equity must not depend upon the Government or persons in power but must depend upon the matters of principles at hand,” the lawmaker said. Mr. Sani added: “The cloud of intimidation and blackmail against people for expressing their objections must end. We are now in a state whereby dissent is equated to disloyalty. “We must learn to tolerate views and positions different from our own no matter how unpopular. If we must all agree on all issues at all times, democracy couldn’t have been ‘invented’. “Democracy guarantees every citizen the fundamental right to free speech and to objection and this must be respected.” He said those in support of the government’s decision to increase petrol price have no right greater than those opposed to it. He said detaching the masses from the Labour movement through orchestrated campaign by some is defanging the power of the masses. “It’s imperative for our people to understand that the political class define and view social justice in the colours of their personal interest. “Those who stood against increase in price of petroleum products yesterday and stood for it today have betrayed the very principle which they claimed to represent. “If for political convenience we choose to divide or destroy the Labour unions today, we will be harming the very organ that stands as the guardian of democracy. “Increase in pump price of petroleum products does nothing other than add to the suffering of Nigerians but those in support of it have the constitutional rights to revere their chains. “Unjust policies must not be beclouded by political interests and political convenience,” he added. He called on the Labour movement to continue to dialogue, but “unambiguously condemn all acts of treacherous intimidation against the leaders of Nigerian workers”. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/203614-shehu-sani-lambasts-nigerian-govts-hypocrisy-warns-intimidating-labour-leaders.html? |

The Nigerian Government is to investigate claims that Switzerland’s Ambassador to the country is living with his husband. Eric Mayoraz arrived in Nigeria last year and – according to local newspaper, the Daily Trust – did so with his husband, a Brazilian man known as Mr Carlos. Akinremi Bolaji, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Thursday (April 7) that the department was aware of the allegation and that it would be investigated. Mr Bolaji, said: “We are aware of the development and have started an investigation. It is either they have deceived us because we would never have allowed such a person to enter the country if we were aware before now. “We have a law, which must be obeyed by all. If we find him culpable, he will be made to face the full wrath of the law.” In 2014, Nigeria criminalised homosexuality and made some acts punishable with a life sentence. Mr Mayoraz has refused to comment on the investigation. A spokesman for the embassy, said: “We do not provide any information about the privacy of our employees.” It is unclear whether the Ambassdor would be entitled to diplomatic immunity, if the Nigerian authorities believed the allegations to be true. The newspaper reported that rumours surfaced last year when the Swiss Embassy introduced Mr Carlos as a member of the Association of Spouses of Heads of Missions (ASOHOM). Proving controversial, the embassy eventually withdrew from the group in December. Last year, Nigeria rejected calls from US President Barack Obama to repeal the anti-gay law stating, “sodomy is against the law in Nigeria, and abhorrent to our culture.” |

I can swear on this fuel scarcity that BUBU does not know about this. |
Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, has declared that Nigerians were now paying for the sins of the past government. He said the Jonathan government owed oil marketers huge debts in oil subsidy payments, such that they have stopped importing the product in the last couple of months, hence the biting scarcity. Asked by State House correspondents to explain the scarcity to the nation, Lai said: “What I will be telling Nigerians is that what we met on ground is such that we are paying for the sins of the last administration”. “I am being very serious. You remember that about two weeks ago, we had to go to the National Assembly for a supplementary budget of N674 billion. Of that figure, N522billion was for arrears of fuel subsidy which was incurred as far back as August last year”. “One of the reasons for the fuel scarcity was the inability of the last government to make adequate provision for fuel subsidy”. “We do face some other logistic problems but majorly, we are paying for the sins of the last administration”. Asked what the solution the government was now proffering, the Minister said: “The first thing we have done now is to make sure that unlike before when the marketers used to import the major percentage of the fuel, NNPC has been involved in importation”. “This is because some of the marketers had stopped importing for a couple of months. If you see any fuel anywhere today, it is imported by the NNPC”. “We also inherited the vandalisation of the pipelines which has made it impossible for us to even transport the fuel. In tanks today we have 14 days reserve and off tank we have 10 days reserve”. “The issue is not non-availability of the product; it is the distribution because of pipelines that have been vandalised and the gridlock in Lagos”. “It takes about five days for anybody to take fuel with tanker in Lagos. As at two days ago this matter has been resolved. The Mosinmi pipeline has been secured and it has led to the improvement in the distribution.” http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/jonathan-to-blame-for-fuel-scarcity-says-lai-mohammed/? |
